5 out of 5 stars Best, most complete keys to west coast marine algae.......2000-05-04

This is the algae bible for the west coast of North America. Abbott and Hollenberg's "Marine Algae of California" is without question the best taxonomic guide to algae of the region available anywhere.

This book contains taxonomic keys, summaries of the geographic ranges, biology, and ecology of algae. It also has excellent line drawings that show details of the thalli of algae, as well as details of the characteristics that distinguish one alga from another.

This book is a "must have" for anyone who is interested in learning the algae of the west coast of North America.

This is not a pretty picture book of algae, it is a research reference to west coast algae. If you are looking for "the" authoritative work for algae of the west coast," then this is the book for you.

      5 out of 5 stars A great book.......2005-09-06

The color photographs are very useful. This book is a good choice for the amateur. I know Abbott and Hollenberg is a standard, but many of us don't need such a comprehensive volume.

      5 out of 5 stars A full-color field guide.......2003-08-11

Jennifer Mondragon and Jeff Mondragon are a pair of marine biologists who have personally traversed the Pacific coast from southern California to Alaska. In Seaweeds Of The Pacific Coast: Common Marine Algae From Alaska To Baja California, Jennifer and Jeff effectively collaborate to provide the reader with a full-color field guide featuring eye-catching photographs combined with basic information about identifying characteristics, range, and habitat concerning 128 species of marine algae commonly found in the Pacific coast region. Seaweeds Of The Pacific Coast is very highly recommended as being an superbly organized and thoroughly "user friendly" quick reference which is suitable for marine biology professionals and non-specialist general readers alike.

      Book Description

The primary aim of this bilingual English/Spanish field guide is to help users identify the seaweeds they find and to help them use that identification as a means to learn more about the seaweeds and the marine environment. For those unfamiliar with the Gulf of California, or marine algae in general, sections are included covering the history of phycological research in the Gulf, the basics of marine algal biology and the physical environment in which the organisms live. Included are 78 of the most common species of marine algae in the Gulf of California. Photographs of these species are provided with the text, which lists key characteristics, seasonal growth patterns, comments on ecology and geographical range. There is also a glossary and a section of references for further information.

                          Book Description

Polysaccharides are the subject of heightened interest today, and this book is a concise and fully up-to-date study of the properties of food polysaccharides, describing their interaction with water, the mass-volume-pressure-relationship, various types of mathematical modeling, and the common phenomenology under different combinations of stimuli. New empirical and theoretical equations, which are not often identified with food technologies, are used to support the findings. Polysaccharide Dispersions: Chemistry and Technology in Food is written in a simple, nontechnical style and should be equally comprehensible to the student, the researcher, the plant manager, and the casual observer with only a modest technical background.

This book is addressed to industrial scientists and engineers. Their primary assignments are not directly related to colloid chemistry and they may have no training in colloid chemistry. However, as is so often true in industrial research, development, and engineering, these assignments require a practical understanding of the general principles of colloid chemistry.

This book is a handbook, a resource for the explanation of important colloidal phenomena, for summaries of practical theories, for references to more detailed accounts, and for leads to suppliers and manufacturers.

This book does not contain the mathematical derivations so often required of students. These can be found by reference. It does not explain all the newest research topics. It does contain important ideas to help solve problems and to design new products.

                            Book Description

Until now colloid science books have either been theoretical, or focused on specific types of dispersion, or on specific applications. This then is the first book to provide an integrated introduction to the nature, formation and occurrence, stability, propagation, and uses of the most common types of colloidal dispersion in the process-related industries.
The primary focus is on the applications of the principles, paying attention to practical processes and problems. This is done both as part of the treatment of the fundamentals, where appropriate, and also in the separate sections devoted to specific kinds of industries. Throughout, the treatment is integrated, with the principles of colloid and interface science common to each dispersion type presented for each major physical property class, followed by separate treatments of features unique to emulsions, foams, or suspensions.
The first half of the book introduces the fundamental principles, introducing readers to suspension formation and stability, characterization, and flow properties, emphasizing practical aspects throughout. The following chapters discuss a wide range of industrial applications and examples, serving to emphasize the different methodologies that have been successfully applied.
Overall, the book shows how to approach making emulsions, foams, and suspensions with different useful properties, how to propagate them, and how to prevent their formation or destabilize them if necessary.
The author assumes no prior knowledge of colloid chemistry and, with its glossary of key terms, complete cross-referencing and indexing, this is a must-have for graduate and professional scientists and engineers who may encounter or use emulsions, foams, or suspensions, or combinations thereof, whether in process design, industrial production, or in related R&D fields.

                                Book Description

A general and introductory survey of foams, emulsions and cellular materials. Foams and emulsions are illustrations of some fundamental concepts in statistical thermodynamics, rheology, elasticity and the physics and chemistry of divided media and interfaces. They also give rise to some of the most beautiful geometrical shapes and tilings, ordered or disordered. The chapters are grouped into sections having fairly loose boundaries. Each chapter is intelligible alone, but cross referencing means that the few concepts that may not be familiar to the reader can be found in other chapters in the book. Audience: Research students, researchers and teachers in physics, physical chemistry, materials science, mechanical engineering and geometry.

For the advanced statistics student who's looking for "non-parametric" alternatives to the General Linear Model, this book synthesizes the disparate combinatoric methods into two general models: the Linear Assignment Model and the Quadratic Assignment Model. I must admit that as a doctoral student, I took two years of statistics (univariate and multivariate) from Hubert, so I'm biased. But as a student, I found him to be one of the most lucid professors I've ever had. And this lucidity has carried over to this book. If you want a readable volume from a statistician of the first rank, this is the book to have. My only disappointment is the price. When I got the book in 1988 or so, it was only about $70. Now, ... well, doggone.

4 out of 5 stars Xellos, Mazenda, and Zanaffar -- Oh My!.......2005-10-03

This fifth novel marks the first story not displayed in anime form. Certain elements and characters were placed into the anime (Zanaffar into "Slayers", Xellos and Mazenda into "Slayers Next") but that's about it.

From a story perspective, Lina, Gourry, and Amelia are attacked by a cult who worships the Mazoku Dark Lord -- Ruby Eye Shabranigdu. A powerful female mage named Mazenda manages to seal Lina's power and the only way for Lina to break the seal is to kill Mazenda. With Lina no longer an asset, she is forced to flee a group of beast men with Amelia while Gourry covers their retreat.

Lina finds herself trapped again, only to be rescued by a powerful priest named Xellos. Xellos has impressive magical abilities and Lina soon strikes a bargain to obtain some magical amplification "Demon Blood Stones" and an alliance with the priest. He seems a bit distressed when he hears that Mazenda is a leader of the cult that worships the Dark Lord, so he immediately makes it his goal to "dispatch" her as well as obtain a copy of a Clair Bible manuscript (the original, complete Clair Bible recording all Mazoku knowledge, a manuscript being a copy of a section or page of the original).

Zelgadiss also rejoins Lina's party with the idea of beating Xellos to the Clair Bible manuscript. However things turn grim when it turns out that the cult has the manuscript and is using it to create a new demon beast known as Zanaffar. Will Lina ever get her powers back? Will Gourry return to the party? Will the group be able to slay Zanaffar if Gourry isn't there with his Sword of Light?

For "Slayes" fans, this novel should prove interesting since it is a new story. I was disappointed that the theme from the 4th novel (Lina tracking down why the Mazoku had taken such an interest in her) seems to be missing from this novel. Anime fans will know who Xellos and Mazenda are, but those items are NOT given in this novel. Further, Mazenda's role is very limited and I was rather disappointed in that.

Xellos, on the other hand, proves to be more interesting. He's more like his "Slayers Try" self than his "Slayers Next" self. Certainly, his vast powers in casting spells that even Lina had never done before (Blast Bomb for example) come through quite clearly. Lina still is not as impressive as her anime counterpart, but the fact that she can pick up new spells so quickly (including Xellos's Amplification spell and "Blast Bomb) do give her more of a genious flair. I found it interesting how she already knew the spell "Ragna Blade". I found it REALLY interesting when it is revealed how she learned the super-forbidden spell "Giga Slave".

Again, TokyoPop drops the Japanese honorifics, so now we get a lot of "Mister", "Miss", and "Master" to cover for this. Also, TP changed "Dark Lord" to "Demon Lord" for some reason. I guess it works, but why change it now? And I still suspect that TP is toning down the translations to appeal to a younger audience.

Bottom line: while I did enjoy the novel, it still lacks the depth that normal fantasy novels in the U.S. has. Indeed, were this turned into an anime, it would barely cover six episodes (the first novel had to be stretched to cover nine episodes). However, it is buy-worthy for "Slayers" fans and those who enjoy lighter reading material.
