        Book Description

In this beautiful region travelers can visit sites from the historical past; touch a rock from the moon; and tour the home of the President - all within a two-hour drive. Maryland, Delaware, and Washington, D.C., also feature colorful cafes, lovely gardens, miles of coastline, and national parks to explore. With all these options, there's no time to waste on less-than-perfect sites. Maryland/Delaware Travel-Smart takes the guesswork out of trip planning.

        Customer Reviews:

        2 out of 5 stars A big disappointment.......2004-01-06

The book is titled Travel Smart Maryland/Delaware with the subtitle of Includes Washington D.C. It would have been better named Travel Smart Maryland/Washington D. C. with a subtitle of Barely includes Delaware. Out of some 240 pages, a mere 30 are concerned with Delaware. I have found more information on a couple of web sites than were included in this book. This was a big disappointment to me since I was primarily interested in Delaware. Almost equal time was given to Washington and Maryland. (If I was going to Washington, I'd recommend either the Access or Eyewitness guides over this thing.)

Beside the fact that it didn't really cover the place I wanted information on, what it did provide, I found rather lacking when compared to other guide books. On the cover, it states that the author only lists "the best places to eat, stay and visit." Well, that turns out to be pretty limiting. I know just from a quick Expedia search that there are many more accommodation choices in Wilmington than the author listed. I'd rather have a list, with an indicator of the price range and the service level and let me decide what the "best place" is. I have no problem with the author indicating his/her favorites. The same treatment was given to restaurant selections. Again, I prefer the list of restaurants, the type of cuisine, the price range and some indication or the food quality and let me pick where I want to eat.

The back cover claims that the author lists scenic routes. Well, he/she does, but only 3 and they are pretty much a start here, drive to here, end up here. There is absolutely no suggestions as to neat places to stop, see, eat, stay, etc.

Again the back of the book says it lists itineraries for special interests. Well, it does, but it's just a list of things like "Historic homes in Brandywine valley, Historic home in Washington D.C., etc.", and a total time to accomplish seeing the entire list. Again, no idea of how long it might take to see each of the "suggestions", no indication of a town to stay in that's convenient to the "suggestions", no real effort put in at all.

I don't remember if the author lists opening times, prices of admission, directions to sites or not. I guess I was getting pretty disgusted by that point.

And if you like photographs, you won't find many here. Photos are few, black and white and mostly from the tourist bureau.

The only saving thing about this book is that the maps are plentiful and adequate.

I'll continue looking for a decent guide to Delaware, and if you're looking for a guidebook to Delaware, I can assure you, this isn't it.

        My star ratings:

One star - couldn't finish the book
Two stars - read the book, but did a lot of skipping or scanning. Wouldn't add the book to my permanent collection or search out other books by the author
Three stars - enjoyable read. Wouldn't add the book to my permanent collection. Would judge other books by the author individually.
Four stars - Liked the book. Would keep the book or would look for others by the same author.
Five start - One of my all time favorites. Will get a copy in hardback to keep and will actively search out others by the same author.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guide to DC, Maryland and Delaware.......2001-02-06

Ms. Kinkade has done a great job with her overview guide of Washington D.C. (and its surroundings), Maryland and Delaware. From Alexandria to Annapolis to the Delaware mansions, she gives thorough, pithy reviews of sights, food and lodging throughout the region. The guide is very logically laid out, with useful road maps and -- a unique touch -- a paragraph on a "perfect day" in each of the regions reviewed. As an experienced weekend wanderer in the region, I can strongly endorse the book.

                        Book Description

This self-contained book provides a basic foundation for students, practitioners, and researchers interested in some of the diverse new areas of multiscale (geo)potential theory. New mathematical methods are developed enabling the gravitational potential of a planetary body to be modeled and analyzed using a continuous flow of observations from land or satellite devices. Harmonic wavelet methods are introduced, as well as fast computational schemes and various numerical test examples.

The work is divided into two main parts: Part I treats well-posed boundary-value problems of potential theory and elasticity; Part II examines ill-posed problems such as satellite-to-satellite tracking, satellite gravity gradiometry, and gravimetry. Both sections demonstrate how multiresolution representations yield Runge–Walsh type solutions that are both accurate in approximation and tractable in computation.

                        Topic and key features:

                        * Comprehensive coverage of topics which, thus far, are only scattered in journal articles and conference proceedings

                        * Important applications and developments for future satellite scenarios; new modelling techniques involving low-orbiting satellites

                        * Multiscale approaches for numerous geoscientific problems, including geoidal determination, magnetic field reconstruction, deformation analysis, and density variation modelling

                        * Multilevel stabilization procedures for regularization

                        * Treatment of the real Earth’s shape as well as a spherical Earth model

                        * Modern methods of constructive approximation

                        * Exercises at the end of each chapter and an appendix with hints to their solutions

Models and methods presented show how various large- and small-scale processes may be addressed by a single geoscientific modelling framework for potential determination. Multiscale Potential Theory may be used as a textbook for graduate-level courses in geomathematics, applied mathematics, and geophysics. The book is also an up-to-date reference text for geoscientists, applied mathematicians, and engineers.

5 out of 5 stars A lovely, clever little romance.......2007-05-16

This is a funny, lovely romance. So the banter between the hero and heroine is a bit anachronistic. It will also bring a smile to your face. Their back-and-forth is worth the price of admission alone, and Michaels does a good job of explaining why the heroine is so different from her contemporaries.

There's a nice mystery (about the hero and another one about the true identity of a secondary character), but it's true there is not a lot of conflict. You know what? Sometimes, in a romance book, I might want to read some romance. This story couldn't be described as a thriller, but how often do you read a romance where the mystery is forced and, by the end, absurd? No problem here! The slight mystery is believable.

The only problem I had was the bad guy at the end. I didn't buy his motivation, but by then it didn't really matter. I was already basking in the glow of Gauthier and Ally. Sometimes a funny (not slapstick), clever romance hits the spot.

                        2 out of 5 stars Dissapointed!!!.......2006-02-25

I'm sorry to say I began to read this book and never finished. The premise of the book is cute, but the story begans to drag. I quit after page 124. The characters were entertaining at first, but then things grew monotonous and not fast enough for my taste. If I was you I would read something else. I rated it 2 stars because I made it to p.124. and not beyond.

                        5 out of 5 stars I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!.......2006-02-23

I almost didn't read this book because of some of the negative reviews. I'm so glad I read it anyway. I enjoyed "Someone to Love", so I thought I would try the Kissing Game. I actually prefer the Kissing Game. The first two chapters didn't do anything for me. Too many characters introduced too quickly and it confused me. To be fair, I was also really tired when I started reading this book. But as soon as Armand is introduced, the story starts to pick up. For me, the story REALLY gets good in the last 1/4 of the book. I couldn't put it down. I really enjoyed the mystery surrounding Armand's past, but my favorite part of the book was the dialogue between Ally and Armand. Their conversations had me laughing out loud. This book probably isn't for everybody, but I thoroughly enjoyed it, and highly recommend it if you're looking for a fun, light-hearted Regency romp with wonderful likable characters.

2 out of 5 stars Little substance -- or genuine humor.......2005-03-30

Michaels can be quite amusing....or she can merely attempt to be amusing. This book is more the latter. It's rather a matter of overkill; she tries too hard. Sometimes it's funny, but it's more often boring, predictable, or silly (in a bad way). Armand's okay; Allegra is sometimes intriguing and sometimes an annoyance. There's nothing new here -- the same old characters and plots, with the exception of Oxie and his pranks, and they are not that amusing.

There's not much to like; I had to force myself to finish. Maybe 2 stars is too generous. I'm not sure I'll be able to get through another Michaels books, but I'm tossing this one immediately.

4 out of 5 stars Cute story, could use some conflict.......2004-10-23

The Earl of Sunderland has been hiding on his country estates for years--since being driven out of London society by general disgust over his constant pranks. Now, though, his daughter, Allegra Nesbitt, is 18. It's time for her season, if the Earl, Oxie, is to provide for her after his death. Of course, a few gags while the family is in London are very much in order. Unfortunately for Allegra, the family's ill-fame has spread before it. Even though her father is an Earl, no invitations await them, no callers visit. It's a perfect disaster--except a chance meeting with the one man who can change everything--or create an even larger disaster.

For three years, Armand Gauthier has been the mystery of London society. He's got money, charm, and a deadly hand with both weapon and cards, but he agrees to every rumor--he's son of the Prince, heir to the throne of France, a gambler, an adventurer, a pirate. For the first time in years, he questions his search when he sees Allegra. He can open society's doors to the beautiful debutante, but what will that do to the doors that he needs opened?

Author Kasey Michaels tells a charming story of a joke-crazed man whose misplaced adventures put himself, his daughter, and the handsome adventurer in danger. Allegra is sexually innocent, but a lifetime with her jokester father leaves her vastly experienced in adventure and intrigue. She's the perfect match for Armand. Armand doesn't take long before he realizes that affection from a woman like Allegra will be a full-time job and his adventuring days are over. Still, there is the small matter of surviving the Earl.

THE KISSING GAME is a cute regency-era historical with the charm and comedy of manners readers expect from the genre. I would have wished for a bit more conflict between Armand and Allegra--who never seem to have much reason not to end up together. The lack of conflict kept THE KISSING GAME from being quite as compelling as the strong writing and entertaining secondary characters should have made it.

                              I would have given this a 3 1/2 stars.

From the back cover: This wasn't the game she'd signed up to play! Davina could not have been happier. The position she'd wanted and worked so hard for was hers. As physiotherapist to England's famous Redford Rovers soccer team, she would have finally have her own clinic. A beautiful woman in a man's world, Davina had expected some resistance to her appointment but not from Maxwell Blair, the youngest member of the board of directors. Whatever it was he really had against her, Davina could only guess. What she did know was that Max took an interest in her every move - an interest that greatly disturbed her.

MY REVIEW: I thought the hero was a bit of an arse. I don't even know what in the holy heck the heroine fell in love with him. In the beginning Maxwell was always disrupting her work and finding fault in everything. Of course he's attracted to her and vice versa, etc. But what an arse! He doesn't want to commit to her or something? Anyway, if I was the heroine I would make him suffer ya know? Of course the typical thing that opens Maxwell's eyes is when she almost gets hurt etc. The book was alright but I wouldn't really re-read this again.

                              5 out of 5 stars My Review.......2000-06-06

This was an excellent book, one of the best I have ever read. It was emotional yet funny, and at parts sad. I hope more people will have a chance to read this book, and I am sure they will enjoy it.
