Land Above the Trees: A Guide to American Alpine Tundra

Customer Reviews:
Timberline.......2006-07-16
Timberline - where the trees end - is a biological boundry visible to even the casual traveler throughout North America. Where highways or hiking trails ascend to upper timberlines (ranging from below 2000-foot elevations in Alaska to over 11,000 feet in California), visitors see patchy forest and meadows giving way to stunted trees and finally to mere shrub-like trees and tundra. A lower timberline is seen in the semi-arid west at the foot of mountain ranges. Those who fly over northern Canada or Alaska see a cold produced "arctic timberline" snaking across the continent.
This book describes what timberlines are and why they exist, and what human uses have been made of the timberline enviroment. It surveys tree species and conditions of individual North American timberlines - in the Pacific Coast, Great Basin, Southwest and Mexican Mountains; in the Rockies and Northern Appalachians, and in the arctic - with reference to timberlines worldwide.

West coast only........2006-05-18
This is for north-western hunters. Drawings are low quality. I wouldn't trust myself with just this book.
Read the notes below (I can't summarize this in a description).......2006-05-14
Most of the psilocybe literature (identification guides, etc) are written with a certain geographical position, meaning those guys over in the "Pacific Northwest" (Northern California, Wyoming, Washington State, Etc) - they are the ones who know a lot about finding and discussing the "Actives." This book is great. I take no issue with its subject matter. It is written with a clean, direct approach. Originally written in the seventies, it has become outdated in specific content matters. We as a human population are discovering "new" (newly identified) species almost every single year, sometimes multiple new species are discovered within a few months time. My point is this: This book covers only a small portion of the species out and about in American wood chip piles, lawns, and cow pastures. Bottom line: This book is a healthy addition to other books. There is no single volume out there that stands perfectly by itself. But its good. Worth the money, for sure.
Mushroom Magic.......2002-07-11
A well written and easy to understand book which clearly defines each type of mushroom with illustrations and photographs (in the appendix). It shows how to identify and distinguish between poisonous and hallucinogenic mushrooms (a vital skill). It also gives details on habitat. A useful reference guide. The only extra bit of advice I would give those thinking of ingesting hallucinogenic mushrooms is to always keep a sample in case something goes wrong so they can easily be identified. If in doubt don't pick. This book will certainly help reduces the confusion between similar looking psychotropic and poisonous mushrooms.
A great summarizing mushroom identification guide........1999-06-07
Easily identifies the genus of the mushroom to help identification in further examination. A great, pocket size manual to show which mushrooms are worth picking and which are better left alone. Used with another guide that features expanded species and photographs this book is a neccesity for hunting.

Book Description
Intelligent systems are required to enhance the capacities being made available to us by the internet and other computer based technologies. The theory necessary to help providing solutions to difficult problems in the construction of intelligent systems are discussed. In particular, attention is paid to situations in which the available information and data may be imprecise, uncertain, incomplete or of a linguistic nature. Various methodologies to manage such information are discussed. Among these are the probabilistic, possibilistic, fuzzy, logical, evidential and network-based frameworks.
One purpose of the book is not to consider these methodologies separately, but rather to consider how they can be used cooperatively to better represent the multiplicity of modes of information. Topics in the book include representation of imperfect knowledge, fundamental issues in uncertainty, reasoning, information retrieval, learning and mining, as well as various applications.
Key Features:
• Tools for construction of intelligent systems
• Contributions by world leading experts
• Fundamental issues and applications
• New technologies for web searching
• Methods for modeling uncertain information
• Future directions in web technologies
• Transversal to methods and domains

Book Description
Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, a novel of self-realization greatly admired by the Romantics, has been called the first Bildungsroman and has had a tremendous influence on the history of the German novel. The story centers on Wilhelm, a young man living in the mid-1700s who strives to break free from the restrictive world of economics and seeks fulfillment as an actor and playwright. Along with Eric Blackall's fresh translation of the work, this edition contains notes and an afterword by the translator that aims to put this novel into historical and artistic perspective for twentieth-century readers while showing how it defies categorization.

I was vexed to the heart at these things, and sad for all the evening. By next morning, however, I had quite slept off my sorrow; and was blessed in the persuasion that, but for this one fault, I had played delightfully. The spectators also flattered me with their unanimous approval; they all maintained, that though the lieutenant, in regard to the coarse and the fine voices.
Customer Reviews:
A Masterpiece of a Philosophical Novel.......2006-05-04
Whenever I read Goethe's poems, plays or prose, I'm reminded of his genius. But I have a particularly warm spot in my heart for Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, Goethe's philosophical novel. The story is gripping, the characters majestic and the ideas compelling.
The novel's cornerstone is its chapter entitled "Confessions of a Beautiful Soul." That chapter provides the thread that ties together the book's plot and characters to its philosophy. In that chapter and what follows -- no less than in his Faust -- Goethe provides a glimpse of lives that he views to be truly worth living.
My advice is to read the Sorrows of Young Werther, in which Goethe shows what it means to be an immature, impetuous post-adolescent, and then read Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, and learn what it means to evolve into a wise, contended adult. On the surface, Werther was Goethe's great tragedy, but if you ask me, the real tragedy is that Meister is rarely read in modern America. Hopefully, the book will soon have a renaissance. Lord knows it deserves one.
Bildungsroman.......2004-11-17
German phrase, meaning "novel that raises (characteres)", very common type of a novel in 18th century best describes this book.
Wilhelm Meister alter ego of Goethe himself advances through stages of life consistenting from theatre to salesman to "one that shall be married with someone of higher class than he".
In the mouth of his characters, that are not entirely fictional, Goethe develops problems which he sees as an important factor in a world that he had lived.
Ranging from his views of national theatre, national literature (as presented by von Herder or the whole cultural situation in the wolrd in those days) to the morale, marriage, love and succesfullnes of any type.
Though presented in typically romantic manner this book is read very easy, you'll just need to accomodate yourself to the language and way of thinking of 18th century, which can be looked upon as somewhat naive....especially considering some recent works that have been written around same theme.
Insightfull view to the German romantic novel which you may like or you may not (as it is with any other book)...wouldn't recomend to someone who just started to discover the brilliant world of literature, this book searches for highly tuned reader who has much interest (and much knowledge) of the 18th century world...
A Fantastic Book That Never Leaves You.......2000-11-03
As one of the most prolific and multi-talented authors to ever set words to page, Goethe is often considered the master of early romantic works and even the patriarch of the modern novel. Fittingly, Goethe's numerous interests and telents, including law, geology, science and literature, come to life in Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship the precursor to Wilhelm Meister's Journeyman Years.
I caution all those who pick up this book to do so with grit and determination for it is not light reading. The density and complexity of the piece can be discouraging and the sometimes fantastical character encounters can leave you with a sense of shallowness and predictability. These opinions, however, are ones that fade away as the overall impact of the novel begins to set in and alter you perceptions of the world.
Goethe's romantic voice can be heard throughout, and, while many readers prefer the more adventurous and extravegant side of love, the romances here are shockingly harsh and true-to-life, which only add to the benefits of the work. To be sure adveture and extravegance are not spared.
Goethe was also the quitesential statesman of his time, and this meant ties to Freemasonry. What can be interpreted as Masonic overtones and undertones add a veil of mystery and adventure to the book, while philosophical exchanges leave the reader with points to consider, even in today's world.
My appreciation for this book stems from its uncanny insight into my present life and the lingering ideas it presented to me. Had I not read this novel I would surely be missing something extraordinary today.

The Height of German Romanticism.......2000-11-28
Twenty years divides this wonderful book from the more popular, The Sorrows of Young Werther which was written when Goethe was quite young. Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship belongs to the second period of Goethe's life and his writings and is the purest representation of that second period, having been written over a ten-year period.
This novel is nothing less than a masterpiece of art of the highest order. The problems inherent in a surfeit of emotion and sentimental despair are solved in Wilhelm Meister. Instead of running rampant, as it did in Werther, enthusiasm is channeled in Wilhelm Meister. The protagonist has managed to make peace with the forces that threaten to annihilate him. His once gloomy and perturbed spirit is serene and vital.
More importantly, this harmony and peace have not been achieved through any kind of surrender or crushing blow to the spirit. Instead, the protagonist, once an ardent and high-spirited young man, has simply grown into a calm and serene man; one whose passion and ardor have not waned over the years but have simply ripened. He has managed to give up the foolish idealism of his youth and has built his trust in himself and his own instincts. The darkness of dreams, a landscape on which he used to flounder has become firmer and surer ground.
The characters in this book are blended perfectly: the softness and skepticism of Jarno, the commercialism of Werner, the polish of Lothario, the enthusiasm of the Harper, the vivacity of Philina and the mystic, ethereal nature of the highly spiritual Mignon. Goethe, of course, does justice to each, and places each in his proper element. The mild-hearted Wilhelm, so full of promise and hope, continues to struggle forward, through a myriad of complications toward his world of art.
Goethe, one of the greatest geniuses who ever lived, united all into a whole so perfect and perfectly harmonious, that Wilhelm Meister becomes nothing less than sheer poetry, the very height of German Romanticism at its finest. This marvelous book reveals life in all of its multi-layered existence; it uncovers the beauty and hidden meaning is the mundane; it reveals the perfection of the universe in all its clarity.
Far too many people are scared away from Goethe because of his towering intellectualism, but he wrote in a style the is both gorgeous and readable. Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship is the very pinnacle of German Romanticism and one of the greatest books of world literature. It would be a pity for anyone to miss it.

Book Description
Goethe's Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre is commonly acknowledged to have played a pivotal role in founding the genre known as the Bildungsroman. Although a wealth of critical material has accumulated since its publication in 1795-96, a detailed commentary in English on this novel of `apprenticeship' has been lacking from the corpus. Jane V. Curran's full-length commentary fills this gap. In her analysis, Curran presents the standard material familiar from traditional commentaries, but includes passages hitherto neglected, presenting new insights in a new form. Curran stresses the importance of narrative techniques, traces the development of the characters, and draws the reader's attention to the intertextual echoes, the use of symbols, and the many instances of irony. Curran also points out parallels between Wilhelm Meister's experiences and Goethe's life, and illuminates contemporary issues that are touched on in the novel, particularly the development of the German theater. The book provides notes with additional information for the interpretation of Goethe's work, including factual details of general interest, scholarly sources, and background information. This is a vade mecum not only for students of Goethe and of German literature, but also for all those interested in the development of the Bildungsroman. Jane V. Curran is chair of the German Department, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Book Description
In this new reading of Goethe's most influential novel Blair's close attention to the text brings startling insights to light, often taking issue with received critical opinions. He shows, for example, that Goethe slyly introduced material full of low-cultural, subversive vitality that mocks conservative, authoritarian power interested in conformity or propriety. The novel does not just find fault with developments of the late Enlightenment but rather seductively describes loci of resistance to them: the marketplace, the travelling theatre, the Hanswurst. Equally, the author argues that although 'high' aesthetics, morals, institutions and rationality are impugned, they are not completely discredited: the problem with such high principles is demonstrated as being their tendency to present themselves as the only valid voice.
