Book Description
Explore how the dormancy and difficulty of winter can be a time of spiritual preparation and transformation.
For many, winter is a time of postponed activity--and of shoveling snow, navigating ice, and trying to keep warm. What can easily be forgotten in winter's cold and occasional dreariness is that it can also be a time of shoring up, of purity, praise, delight, and play.
In thirty stirring pieces--from translated Sanskrit and Hebrew poems to Henry David Thoreau and Bashô, Jane Kenyon, John Updike, Kathleen Norris, and Annie Dillard--we share in the recognition of winter's hardships and celebrate the glory of winter as a spiritual gift--a quiet time in the rhythm of life, a time of thoughtfulness, of looking forward, and of unexpected hope.
Customer Reviews:
Slow down and smell the snow.......2005-04-22
This is a great collection of works by a diverse range of authors organized by the different aspects of the seasons - renewal, playfulness, isolation. I had first picked this book because it had something from Annie Dillard in it but found a great number of other authors to enjoy in it; actually that has lead to a number of other great book finds - like Indian Creek Chronicles by Pete Fromm which has an excerpt in the book.
Too often the years just fly by - we have a been there, scene that attitude which causes us to just gloss over much of life. This `spiritual biography of the season' invites the reader to slowdown and truly observe what is going on around then. So far this is the only one I have read in the series but certainly plan on similarly enjoying a similar look at the other seasons.

Book Description
Applications of Plant Cell and Tissue Culture Chairman: Y. Yamada 1988 Interest in all aspects of plant cell and tissue culture is expanding rapidly as the technologies available improve and the commercial potential of these processes becomes apparent. This book covers basic plant physiology and cytology and extends to the practical exploitation of plants, both as crops per se and as sources of useful compounds produced as secondary metabolites. The reduction of plants to single cells or tissues that can be maintained in culture facilitates their manipulation by the techniques of molecular biology. Genes encoding desirable traits, for example herbicide or pathogan resistance or early flowering, can be introduced into domesticated crops by transformation of normal plant cells using a natural vector such as Agrobacterium, by the uptake of DNA into protoplasts using techniques developed for animal cells, or by direct injection of DNA into intact cells with cell walls. Application of these technologies to forest trees is especially important because the long lifespan of these species makes their improvement by conventional breeding programmes very slow. Problems of commercial exploitation considered include the storage of genetically engineered material until progeny evaluation has been completed, the stability of traits in culture, and the feasibility of adapting laboratory methods to large-scale production plants. There is also some discussion of the sociolegal aspects of genetic engineering of crop plants, and of the difficulties of marketing `natural' compounds produced by cells under artificial conditions. Customer Reviews:
rude, snide & not vey useful.......2005-02-26
What an awful book! I first bought the "Irreverent Guide to Rome" and my husband & I loved it. (He lived in Rome for 6 years & said the description were dead-on accurate). So I decided to buy the book for LA, my home town. What a mistake! Unlike the witty, cultured, perceptive guide to Rome, this book is unfunny, rude, snide, classist, name-dropping, & way off the mark. The lovely, funky, beach community of Venice is slammed for having "weirdos, bums and scum." A popular Indian restaurant is described as being good, but "hold the cholera, please." Not funny! Luckily, I also bought Lonely Planet: Los Angeles, which was much, much better.
See the quirky side of Los Angeles.......2003-06-21
Whether you are visiting Los Angeles or live here, this book is filled with things to do that you never would have thought of or even knew existed. Tons of fun!
Great even for natives!.......2002-01-03
As an LA native, I must say that this book is right on the money. Although I'd have to disagree when the author refers to "the city" as consisting only of Downtown (any true native knows that "the city" is Mulholland to the 10, and Downtown to the beach!), everything else is just perfect. I learned things that even my 26 years of exploring never showed me. It's a great book for travellers, especially those who have never been and don't have friends here (it is truly difficult to navigate the SIZE of Los Angeles without a guide!) . But it's also a great book for those of us who have lived here all of our lives!
Great travel guide with attitude........2001-05-31
This is not your typical travel guide. In fact, it's more like a mini sociological study of LA with great tips on where to watch the natives in their local habitat. LA isn't so much a city as it is a collection of neighborhoods, and author Jeff Spurrier does a great job of describing how this all works. The book is a handy size for carrying along, so you can take advantage of the manuy great maps as you tour the area. Spurrier warns you again and again that the only way to really get around LA is by car, but he does offer alternatives for those intimidated by the freeways and/or parking dilemma. His selection of hotels and restaurants is broad - everything from Beverly Hills luxury to places with lots of attitude but not much polish. In many ways, the rest of the book is an ideal primer for anyone moving to LA or planning to spend lots of time there. Not only will you find a carefully selected list of recreational options, but you will also get helpful hints on when to go and how to get there. There is a great section on what to do - and not to do - with children, but there is no mention of Disneyland. Indicative, I think, of how this book is a true insider's guide to the city, not just a promotion for tourisim.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing Book about American History.......2006-10-19
My daughter is in 1st grade and absolutely LOVED this book. It is a non-fiction account of many of the important documents (Declaration of Independence, etc.), monuments (Washington, etc.), and events of the early days of United States. It gives plenty of information (there were 3 whole pages on the D of I) that could be useful as a resource for a school history project. The writing is factual, but my daughter, who is 7, was able to read it all and was enthralled by it. The illustrations are also wonderful. After checking it out 3 times from her school library, she is now putting this book on her wish-list for Christmas!
A fine survey of American historic symbols .......2005-04-12
The many symbols of American liberty are part of our culture but rarely receive clear explanation for youngsters under one title, so choose Sheila Keenan's O Say Can You See? A fine survey of American historic symbols is provided, from an explanation and history of why the Liberty Bell is cracked to early designs for the US flag and why the current design was chosen. Color drawings throughout enhance /sgeuka Keenan's informative survey.

A Brief History to Explain to our Kids what Happened.......2005-04-18
To we old folks, World War II is a real memory. It has become part of our lives in a way that subsequent wars cannot. It was a war of emmense porportions, truly a world war fought in every time zone the world has.
Yet, in a city of monuments there was no memorial to this war for sixty years. Finally, on May 29, 2004 this memorial was finally dedicated in the middle of the Washington Mall.
This small book (exceedingly well bound to give it a long life in a library) is designed to assist children to understand the cultural importance of this war. While not the war to end all wars, this war probably marks the end of huge superpower wars. With atomic weapons, such wars as this could never be fought without ending life as we know it.

Book Description
In Theory of Cortical Plasticity, Nobel Laureate Leon Cooper and his collaborators present a systematic development of the Bienenstock, Cooper and Munro (BCM) theory of synaptic plasticity, and discuss experiments that test both its assumptions and consequences.
This insightful book provides an elegant analysis of theoretical structure in neuroscience research, and elucidates the role BCM theory has played in guiding research leading to our present understanding of the mechanisms underlying cortical plasticity.

Three Of His Best.......2002-04-09
If you want to know where the modern realist tradition began, then look no further, it all began with Dickens. He was by far one of the most excellent observers of the life around him. He was of his time, and yet he transcended his times. These three books represent some of his finest creations. A must read for any reader who wants to call themselves well read.
