Book Description
This definitive guide to hiking in Vermont has been completely revised and updated and includes six new hikes. In addition to covering the Green Mountains it now includes 6 more new hikes ranging throughout the state.
From gentle nature trails to rugged peak climbs, from remote fishing holes to historic ghost towns, from rushing waterfalls to rare peregrine falcon habitat, the Green Mountain State has much to offer hikers. This completely revised and updated sixth edition leads hikers up classic peaks like Camel's Hump, Mount Mansfield, and Mount Ascutney, as well as revealing many more lesser-known gems.
The hikes range in length from a half-mile stroll to a 22-mile backpacking trip. Each hike description includes a topographic map, mile-by-mile directions, and information on distance, difficulty, terrain, and hiking time. An overview chart makes it easy to pick a hike for every ability. And each hike description is enlivened by knowledgeable commentary on the area's geology, history, flora, and wildlife. 50 black & white photographs, 51 maps, index.

decent "starter" trail guide for VT.......2007-08-19
I purchased this book when I first moved to Vermont to help me find my way around the trails here. It provides a decent cross-section of hikes, "rambles", and overnights throughout the state and across the entire spectrum of difficulties (from "easy (even with kids)" to "oh goodness, that was rough").
If you are just starting out with outdoors activities, this is a good place to start because you are almost certain to find something near to you that is within your comfort zone (as far as challenge goes). However, if you are a more experienced hiker, you will outgrow this book too quickly. (And if that is the case, I would suggest the Green Mountain Club's "Day Hiker's Guide" instead.)
Beautiful guide with essential information.......2003-09-19
Living in California, I don't get a chance to hike in Vermont as often as I would like. But when I do, I always take this lightweight guide along in my car and in the pack. The best part about the guide is that hikes are described in detail and directions to each trailhead are given in exhaustive detail. This is especially important for out-of-towners who aren't familiar with the back country roads. The authors have hiked each of the trails and they offer pithy comments on trail conditions, the possibility of seeing wildlife and other pertinent information.
There is a separate section on the magnificent Long Trail, the 260 mile hike which runs from the Massachusetts border to he Canadian border. My one slight criticism is the photos, which could be of better quality, but the text, route descriptions and ancillary material are of high quality.
Good not Great.......2002-08-29
This book does provide good trail descriptions for a reasonable number of hikes in Vermont. I've hiked about a dozen of the trails listed in here, of those 10 there were:
2 in which the directions to the trailhead listed the wrong forest service road to take.
3 in which I saw other trails at junctions that weren't mentioned in this book leading to nearby attractions (without giving full descriptions it would be nice to mention alternatives for longer hikes available).
1 in which the directions led to a difficult hike, but it turned out talking to people at the top that a much easier hike was available to reach the same destination from the same trailhead.
Having said that, this book does give the visitor an easy way to plan some hikes in Vermont. The Falcon guide looks to be similar, so it might be useful to read both before planning your hikes.
Before you buy this book..........2001-06-11
I liked this book - easy to read and informative. The only problem was it didn't have very specific information on things like shelters, camping, etc. - it's more of a day-hike book. I phoned the Green Mountain Club (the authors) to get more info, and it turns out that they have written a book of their own called "The Long Trail Guide")that is much more comprehensive and they recommend it more than this one. I would check that book out before you get this one. But if you just want a good book for day hikes, I like this one fine.
Comprehensive hiking book for the right price.......2000-09-17
The fifth edition of this book, written by two members of the Green Mountain Club, covers hikes everywhere in the State. To no one's surprise, the majority are located along the Appalachian trail and the area with the least hikes covered is in the Northeast Kingdom.
The authors offer a very good "At A Glance" section in the beginning with hike name, location, and so forth-- many of the things also covered in the individual hikes, but what stands out in this secion is whether or not each hike has a view, good for kids, nearby camping, good for winter, and my personal fav, notes that state whether the hike is good for x-c skiing, snowshoeing, waterfalls, historical interest, etc. The book also contains a "hiker's" guide to trail map symbols, safety, what the pack and more.
There are no surprises in the write-up for each hike. The authors have not left anything out: distance, hiking time, vertical rise, difficulty rating, pictures and topographical maps.
You won't find a better book about hiking in Vermont for this reasonable price.

Book Description
As discrete mathematics rapidly becomes a required element of undergraduate mathematics programs, algebraic software systems replace compiled languages and are now most often the computational tool of choice. Newcomers to university level mathematics, therefore, must not only grasp the fundamentals of discrete mathematics, they must also learn to use an algebraic manipulator and develop skills in abstract reasoning. Experimental Mathematics with MAPLE uniquely responds to these needs. Following an emerging trend in research, it places abstraction and axiomatization at the end of a learning process that begins with computer experimentation. It introduces the foundations of discrete mathematics and, assuming no previous knowledge of computing, gradually develops basic computational skills using the latest version of the powerful MAPLE® software. The author's approach is to expose readers to a large number of concrete computational examples and encourage them to isolate the general from the particular, to synthesize computational results, formulate conjectures, and attempt rigorous proofs. Using this approach, Experimental Mathematics with MAPLE enables readers to build a foundation in discrete mathematics, gain valuable experience with algebraic computing, and develop a familiarity with basic abstract concepts, notation, and jargon. Its engaging style, numerous exercises and examples, and Internet posting of selected solutions and MAPLE worksheets make this text ideal for use both in the classroom and for self-study.
Book Description
Nonlinear Physics is one of today's most dynamic areas of modern research, with applications in such diverse disciplines as physcis, engineering, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, biology, medicine and economics. This text introduces students to an integrated approach to the nonlinearities that underlie some of the most crucial problems they encounter and provides them with cutting edge tools for their solution. Extensive use is made of Maple V, Release 4. The pedagogical benefits of Maple are evident to students and researchers alike because of its symbolic, numeric and plotting capabilities. No prior knowledge of Maple or of programming is assumed here. In an effort to reduce mathematical and computer apprehensions often associated with Maple, the authors have provided 65 example files of Maple, all classroom tested. These files illustrate how Maple may be used to analytically and/or numerically solve sets of equations, plot complicated 2-D and 3-D graphs, animate various text models, and both produce and explore most of the plots used in the text. The problems too can be solved using Maple. The first 8 chapters of the text normally require one semester of ordi- nary differential equations and an intermediate course in mechanics. The last 3 chapters assume the students have some familiarity with partial derivatives, and have encountered the wave, diffusions and Schroedinger equations.
Customer Reviews:
Clear,Concise,Fun.......2000-05-23
Nice book for professionals and first-year students. Nice graphics (via Maple). Good introduction to advanced non-linear applications - students should be able to find lots of interesting areas to explore. (be first!)
Book Description
The failure of the marriage between Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes has always been considered from one of two conflicting viewpoints: hers or his. Missing for more than four decades has been a third perspective on the events that brought their marriage to its ill-fated end, the story of another—the other—woman: Hughes’ mistress Assia Wevill.
Like Plath before her, Assia shared her life with Hughes for seven years, until she took her own life and that of their daughter at the age of forty-two, in a manner that nearly replicated Plath’s suicide six years earlier. Drawing on previously unavailable documents and private papers, including Assia’s diaries and her intimate correspondence with Hughes, this book shows the vital influence Assia exerted on the poet and his work, and the uneasy life they shared under the long shadow of Plath.
A Lover of Unreason is the first-ever full-length biography of Assia Wevill. It casts a keen light, and explores the emergence of a singular twentieth-century woman. Three-times divorcée, career woman, mistress, and single mother, Assia Wevill openly defied the conventions of a censorious pre-feminist Britain and mesmerized men and women alike with her quick-mind and exotic beauty.
Customer Reviews:
It's about time.......2007-08-14
I find "A lover of unreason: The life and tragic death of Assia Wevill, Ted Hughes' doomed love" completely irresistible and very well researched and written. Those of us lucky enough to be at the Plath Symposium in 2002 at Indiana were teased with some of the information presented in the biography. Shock and awe spread throughout the auditorium when Koren and Negev spoke about the Plath/Hughes trip to Ireland, the deception, and the Hughes/Wevill trip to Spain. That was barely the tip of the iceberg in this very complicated situation.
The success of A Lover of Unreason in my opinion comes from presenting a very full and human picture of Assia; a woman who has been alternately ignored and raked over coals and not given sufficient attention. Here is a woman who was far, far from perfect and revered only for her uncommon and undeniable beauty, presented in a way that reminded me much of how Plath was presented in Bitter Fame. I was not expecting a book of idolatry, but I also was not expecting to find that Wevill did have some redeemable qualities. This is truly an enlightening read and brings an important piece of the Plath/Hughes puzzle closer to completion.
Assia's journals, according to the text, are in private hands. They shed some very crucial information into not just her own mind and life, but also into Plath's and Hughes?. I would not mind being introduced to those private hands! I wonder if there are any plans to publish them or to deposit them with an archive?
Yes and No...but more No.......2007-07-08
Quite simply, "Lover of Unreason" is educational. The material is very provoking and rewarding--especially if you hold a deep and tenacious grudge against Ted Hughes. My issue with the book is strictly in its presentation. It's a dull and obvious take on a biography. Even the cover art is uninspired. I suggest waiting for someone else to write a more gripping account of this irrefutably fascinating woman's life.
Excellent service..........2007-05-20
This order arrived surprisingly quick & was in exactly the condition described. I will definetely use this method of ordering again!! Super easy with no hassle...perfect!
Great Read.......2007-05-19
I have read several biographies of Sylvia Plath, and one of Ted Hughes, but Assia seems to have been the forgotten point of the triangle. This book was very informative, giving lots of insight as to what made these people tick, and explains some of the mysteries of the lives of these three people. A very interesting book.
A great biography, with other implications..........2007-05-13
I've never written a review before, but I saw blurbs for this book in everything from my local paper to Vogue... So naturally, being a wannabe poet and Sylvia-lover, I wanted to read it. It is a very frank account of the life of a remarkably unique woman, her loves, her ultimate weaknesses and her final end. It forces an examination of self: here is a strong, beautiful woman, not unlike her predecessor, Sylvia Plath; who had an intense capacity for life and joy, but ultimately measures her value only by the love of a man. It is also an enlightening view of history: Assia's life spans the beginning of the nation of Israel, World War II, and the so-called "liberation" of women in the 1960's. Also interesting is that the very existence of Assia was hidden from the public for decades and her true identity revealed only recently. Recommended for anyone who ever read "The Bell Jar" and wondered why??

A gripping story with vivid characters.......2006-10-21
"Sylvia's Lovers" is one of five books written by Elizabeth Gaskell. The main character, Sylvia, grew up in North England at the end of the 18th century. The book was written in 1863, after the Industrial Revolution had transformed England, and harks back somewhat nostalgically to a vanished, largely rural, age. Gaskell's previous books were set in the industrial revolution and describe its devastating impacts on the working classes.
One incident in the story describes a trip to London, which seemed almost a foreign country to people living in the north at the time and required a lengthy boat trip from Newcastle to get there. By the middle of the 19th century this trip would have been done by rail in a fraction of the time.
The narrative and dialogue are heavily laced with religious references. Gaskell was married to a Unitarian minister, so it is difficult to tell if that influenced her choice of dialog, or whether the readers of the day expected that sort of thing. I find it difficult to believe that the ordinary people of the day were so fixated on religion.
It is difficult to say much about the plot itself without giving away important details of the story. Suffice to say that Sylvia, who is an orphan and from a humble background is put through the wringer of life. Gaskell started the book, put aside and then finished much later. This interruption gives rise to some slight jarring in the treatment of the principal characters in the second half of the book, although this minor defect is only noticeable to the observant reader.
The characters and their actions are often exaggerated to the point of almost being caricatures to modern readers. But this style maximises the emotional content of many of the incidents described in the book and is very typical of "romantic" English literature of the era. The same can be said of Dickens, Thackeray and Jane Austen.
Extended descriptive passages and the drawing-out of emotional scenes can be irritating because it slows down the narrative and is too obvious a device to hook the discerning reader. Presumably readers of the day loved this stuff - much as modern readers go for similar depictions on TV and in print.
However, the narrative itself is gripping, especially towards the end of the book when events reach their climax and the various threads of the plot are drawn together. There are exciting twists and turns in the plot, almost like a modern thriller. This is where Gaskell shines - she is a very skilful constructor of intricate story plots. It is difficult to put the book down as we near the end of the story.
Gaskell is brilliant in evoking mental images in the reader. We are drawn into the story in our imagination and construct our own imagery of the characters and settings. This, of course, is why books will always be with us and will never be supplanted by TV.
Another area in which Gaskell shines is her depiction of characters, even though they might be standard "types" to readers of the day.
"Sylvia's Lovers", like all Gaskell's books, is an enjoyable read for the story alone. One can skip over much of the purple descriptive bits without any loss. The book also gives a valuable insight into attitudes and ways of life in the early 19th century. This will interest readers who love history. Fiction such as this can illuminate social history.
To give one example, this book, like much of the literature of the era, mentions death a great deal. In the days before sanitation and safe water and before the use of modern drugs, death was a very familiar occurrence in every family - not something largely hidden and invisible as it is in modern society.
Book Description
A was powerfully moving novel of a young woman caught between the attractions of two very different men, Sylvia's Lovers is set in the 1790s in an English seaside town. England is at war with France, and press-gangs wreak havoc by seizing young men for service. One of their victims is a whaling harpooner named Charley Kinraid, whose charm and vivacity have captured the heart of Sylvia Robson. But Sylvia's devoted cousin, Philip Hepburn, hopes to marry her himself and, in order to win her, deliberately withholds crucial informationwith devastating consequences.
Customer Reviews:
History's Cold Shadow.......2001-04-19
In this bleak novel Elizabeth Gaskell deftly weaves a dark thread of history into her narrative tapestry. While war hovers on the margins of the novel, no one is left unaffected by its horror. After a sometimes painfully slow setup of domestic life in the seaside town of Monkshaven in the first third of the book, the sense of doom grows increasingly palpable. Sylvia, the novel's heroine, is isolated by her supposedly protective domestic sphere, but Gaskell shatters the delicate domestic circle that surrounds her. While Sylvia is left to bear emotional scars, becoming an impassive, hardened woman, Charley Kinraid, her true love, returns from war a ghost, haunting the margins of Monkshaven to hide his terrible physical scars. The full realization of the blight on Sylvia's life comes when the novel spirals down to its inevitable conclusion, where even reconciliation and understanding brings a powerful sense of loss.

I can't help it,' said Sylvia, half inclined to cry at his manner even more than his words. 'When folk are glad I can't help being glad too, and I just put out my hand, and she put out hers. To think o' yon ship come in at last! And if yo'd been down seeing all t' folk looking and looking their eyes out, as if they feared they should die afore she came in and brought home the lads they loved.
