Book Description
This book introduces the workings of the central nervous system to biomedical science and veterinary students. It provides structural and functional insight into how the system might fail and how damaged components can be recognized. The discussions are based on a generalized mammal, with
specific references to humans and domestic animals. The author emphasizes an economical approach, one that enables beginners to grasp essential principles quickly and easily. More advanced passages, appropriate for research students and clinicians, are distinguished by a separate typeface.

Book Description
Multidimensional Analysis and Discrete Models, a thorough and detailed reference, covers the main structures of multidimensional analysis and the intrinsically defined discrete models in applied mathematics, mathematical physics, and related fields. The material is presented in a clear and straightforward manner, with background information provided to define finite models and to clarify the concepts of multidimensional analysis. The book covers special difference models of the mathematical physics equations, models of boundary value problems, and objects of quantum mechanics. Considerable attention is also given to differential operators on Riemannian manifolds and the interpretation of classical vector analysis. The primary focus of Multidimensional Analysis and Discrete Models is on the description of regular methods of constructing intrinsically defined discrete models for special classes of continual objects, but emphasis is also given to the interaction of ideas and methods that exist throughout the field of mathematics. For example, the connections between theories derived from classical and functional analysis, Riemannian geometry, and algebraic topology are illustrated, and are discussed in terms of their relevance to computing solutions.
Book Description
The German Romantic movement arose in response to the turmoil of the French Revolution and to the Enlightenment's emphasis on science and reason. Nostalgia for the past and a fascination with mysticism and medivialism caused a group of writers to adopt the foremost form of the Kunstmar or "literary fairy tales." This collection, vividly illustrating the development of German Romanticism, presents four of the genre's key texts that still have the power to enchant and disturb. Goethe's The Fairy Tale (1795)--an ethereal story of prophecy and resurrection--helped establish of the genre. Ludwig Tieck's Eckbert the Fair (1792) is a dark story of incest and murder. Friedrich de la Motte Fouque describes the unhappy fate of a wood nymph with the soul of a woman in Undine (1811). In The Tale of Honest Casper and Fair Annie (1817), Clemens Brentano tells the tale of young couple destroyed by a false sense of honor.
Book Description
An exquisite American heiress, Louise Vandermeer is beautiful, brilliant. . . and bored-which is why she has agreed to a daring adventure: to travel across the ocean to marry an aristocrat abroad. Rumor has it her intended is a hideous cad-a grim prospect that propels her into a passionate, reckless affair with a compelling stranger she never sees in the light of day.
THE BEAST
Though scarred by a childhood illness, Charles d'Harcourt has successfully wooed Europe's most sophisticated beauties. For a lark, he contrived to travel incognito on his own fiancee's ship-and seduce the young chit in utter darkness. But the rake's prank backfired. It was he who was smitten-while the hot-tempered Lulu, now his wife, loves only her shipboard lover, unaware it was d'Harcourt all the time! And Charles will never have her heart-unless he can open her eyes to the prince who hides within.
Customer Reviews:
Awful romance novel.......2007-10-08
I've only read one other Judith Ivory book, and BEAST will be my last. Unbearably shallow characters, thrown-together historical backgrounds, pointless plots that circle around endlessly because characters refuse to clear the air with each other -- UGH. All the things I hate in a romance novel. And I've inflicted this myself, twice.
And the main characters in BEAST -- Charles d'Harcourt and Louise Vandermeer -- are awful, he being a vain scuzball who's bedding another woman in the opening chapters, and she being a shallow little twit with pouty lips and curvy figure...and, that's about it.
Beauty and the Beast gone awry.......2006-08-22
Louise Vandermeer has been promised to a man who everyone has assured her is ugly, lame, and disfigured. Louise, being possessed of a rare beauty that makes her the object of many men's affection, decides to have one last fling aboard the ship that's taking her to her husband before accepting her fate. What she doesn't know is that her future husband, Prince Charles d'Harcourt, is aboard the ship and aware of her plans. He decides to seduce his innocent wife and show her that looks aren't everything. What he doesn't expect is that his ruse will backfire, and he'll fall in love with Louise.
The first half of Beast is much better than the second. When Louise and Charles are falling for each other, even with their identities supposedly a secret, their connection is palpable and there are sparks at every turn. However, when Louise arrives in France to meet her husband, "The Beast," her actions from then until about the last two pages of the book are intolerable. She acts like the spoiled, selfish, vapid child that she has always been, but for some reason she managed to turn it off when she thought she might get her way. It was ridiculous and obnoxious and fairly ruined the end of an otherwise likeable tale. I liked the first part of this book enough to suffer through the end, but I doubt I'll ever read it again past their romance aboard the ship.
Not her best.......2006-07-24
I've read all six Judith Ivory books (minus those under her Cuevas name) and this book was my second least favorite (Proposition holds that title for eternity).
The review from reader with this heading "Really tried to give it a chance but..., May 9, 2004" basically said it best. I don't feel like most reviewers that the first part was better than the second. Instead, I had to resist skimming through the first part because when I read a romance I am more interested in how the two "real" characters interact with each other.
It was especially difficult to get a reading on who Charles was and to care for his character as a result in the beginning. I mostly found him to be pathetic for his deceit. Seriously, what's appealing about a random stranger who offers to sleep with you? The fact that Louise fell for it was hardly believable, and this bothered me a bit. It was only till the second part that I came to like him.
While I preferred the second part, it would have been nice if Ivory did what she did best and spent more time showing how these two ended up caring for each other. It was too rushed. And in the end I feel that while I will read this book again I will always feel that Ivory could have done it better. Still, Ivory rules.
Wow...this book really took my breath away........2006-06-13
It's a 4.5 star one for sure...I'm only knocking off 1/2 a star because of Louise's age. It was fairly uncomfortable to read about an adolescent girl having sex with a much older man. I understand why the author chose to make Louise young - her youth was such a big part of who she was and why she was the way she was. I just would have been a bit more comfortable if she had been around 20 instead.
The beginning of the book was a bit slow. But this book was so emotionally involving for me. I had butterflies in my stomach almost the entire time I was reading. Charles' character is one of the most well-rounded, complex, and intriguing characters I have ever read about. He is so very easy to love.
Louise, on the other hand, borders on obnoxious (as I am sure the author intended her to be). Instead of denying her personality defects, she acknowledges them. She wants to change - she wants to grow and mature. She just needs time and little bit of help from Charles. They are a perfect fit in every way.
The smoldering passion and searing sexuality took my breath away. There isn't necessarily a whole lot of explicit sex, but there is almost an overabundance of rich sensuality. Your heart will race with anticipation!
Definitely a keeper!
A Book to Revisit Again and Again.......2006-05-30
I read a lot of romance, partly because of my profession, but mostly because I never grow tired of reading a fabulous, sensual love story. For me, BEAST is just such a book and on a very short list of my all-time favorite romances. The hero's insecurity and vulnerability--which causes him to pretend to be someone he is not, and in the process find himself almost becoming an invented person. The heroine's immaturity in the beginning, so that she would disdain a man based on his appearance, only to discover that he's much more than she sees on the surface. It's a classic theme, but in Ivory's hands becomes fresh and new all over again. The woman is a master storyteller, and one of the best romance authors writing today. I will never give my well-worn, very loved copy of this book away!
Book Description
Bring together an uppity society princess with a scruffy marine biologist, then throw in a desperate matchmaker with faulty magic, and you've got the perfect recipe for disaster
or love. Magic and mayhem rock the boat in Shirley Jump's fairy tale romantic comedy, part of the In a Fairy Tale World series.
Customer Reviews:
Romance with a chuckle.......2005-03-08
Shirley Jump knows how to write a romance without losing her sense of humor. Since romance and relationships are essentially funny, this was a wonderful book to read. I kept chuckling out loud which made my husband keep asking "what's so funny?". I will be reading more of her books.
Jealous of the talent, eh, Krista? This book ROCKS!.......2004-12-26
If you're a romantic comedy junkie like me, you're not going to be able to resist this great new story by Shirley Jump. It's fun, charming, and completely irresistible, packed with Shirley's unsinkable humor and a strong thread of erotic suspense.
If you don't own it, GET it.
Heather J., Wyoming
Scruffy marine biologist meets society chick.......2004-12-14
Brad Smith is a marine biologist on a search for giant squid, despite his wealthy family's disapproval. Parris Hammond is a sometimes-shrewish, slightly spoiled society beauty who eventually falls for him and decides sea life is pretty cool. This is a mostly okay book, nothing spectacular, but with a few funny moments. It beats the previous book in the series, but doesn't measure up to the first one.
For another take on the story of the rich girl who matures and falls for a great guy she might once have ignored, definitely check out Cara Colter's "The Heiress Takes a Husband."
