This adventure guide to the biggest state opens with a compelling statistic: to see the entirety of Alaska, you would need to visit approximately 1 million acres per day for an entire year. To explore a state so vast requires an equally comprehensive resource. Peggy Wayburn's Adventuring in Alaska delivers, providing--by region--loads of general nature and recreational- oriented information as well as quirky Alaska-specific details. Read about bush pilots and the "Bear Essentials," or consider permafrost, a chilly reminder that 80 percent of the state is covered with frozen soil. The state's rich cultural and historical past is discussed throughout the book. For each region a map is included, as well as detailed listings of transportation, lodging, wilderness activities, and parks (phone numbers and addresses are often included). --Rob McDonald

Customer Reviews:
Dull, virtually mapless and painfully wordy.......1999-05-15
Either the author or Sierra Club should take a look at the wonderful Dorling Kindersley series of Eyewitness Travel Guides to see what a travel book can be -- alternately you might consider a Lonely Planet.
The author tells us that you could take a year to see Alaska at a rate of one million acres per day (referring to its vastness) then fails to provide many maps to the sectional chapters of the book, so you're always wondering where you are. Other things lacking are well-organized and clearly located (they exist, but are rudimentary, arbitrary, and difficult to locate) tables and charts of useful information (e.g. temperature, elevation, rainfall, snowfall.
The book could benefit from a synopsis of Alaska's regions, with similarities and differences clearly outlined so a new visitor to Alaska could easily map out which region(s) might be of particular interest.
This is one of the few books in the past 30 years that I've failed to read from cover-to-cover. Yes I've a Type A personality -- perhaps this book might appeal to someone with more patience or a strong interest in archeology and detective work -- you'll have to dig to find the information you want. (By the way, this is the first time I've felt compelled to write a review!)
Great overall read - get to know all of Alaska........1999-02-06
This is a book not only for the adventurer, but anyone who wants to know more about Alaska. There are all kinds of historical facts and figures that you would need to search for in several reference books, without the reference book feeling. Other notes about Alaska the people living there probably don't know about. If you are into hiking, kayaking, biking, or any other mode of traveling in Alaska, Peggy Wayburn will get you there and tell you what you need, what to watch for, and who to contact in advance for more info! Adventuring in Alaska is exciting and wonderous, well worth it.

Entertaining and informative tool for discovering Alaska........1999-07-22
Packed with fun, facts, photos and lots of interesting insights, this book is a wealth of historical highlights and current information. A great blend of keep-you-smiling cartoons and wonderful photographs of the Alaskan adventure lead you through the text. I found it to be a treasure map for discovering Alaska while I was there. Book Description
The beginning of life may be a miracle to some, and a mystery to others, but it is certainly one of the most exciting and perhaps controversial fields of scientific investigation in the 21st century. Among the metazoa, life begins when an egg is fertilized by a sperm. The sperm provides a genetic blueprint from the father and perhaps some critical proteins. The egg provides a genetic blueprint from the mother together with a large reservoir of mRNAs and proteins that are required for DNA replication, cell division and the onset of zygotic gene expression. All of the thousands of genes in these two mature gametes are transcriptionally silent and remain so until fertilization.
This work focuses on three biological systems, providing the reader with a clear understanding of the current state of affairs, and the ability to identify common principles as well as critical differences that are responsible for beginning the process of animal development.
The essays presented will be of practical value to all those who are interested in improving fertilization
in vitro, in designing novel methods of contraception, in developing preimplantation genetic diagnosis for various diseases, in cloning animals by transplanting nuclei from adult cells to an enucleated egg, and in the application of embryonic stem cells to curing genetic diseases or replacing damaged tissues. But above all, this volume is offered to those who simply have an insatiable curiosity about life and its beginnings.

Book Description
With applications ranging from modelling the environment to automotive design and physiology to astrophysics, conventional textbooks cannot hope to give students much information on what topics in fluid dynamics are currently being researched, or how to choose between them. This book rectifies matters. It consists of eleven chapters that introduce and review different branches of the subject for graduate-level courses, or for specialists seeking introductions to other areas. Hb ISBN (2001): 0-521-78061-6
Download Description
Conventional textbooks cannot hope to give graduate students more than an inkling of what topics are currently being researched in fluid mechanics, or how to make a choice among them. This book, consisting of eleven chapters, each introducing a different branch of the subject, provides students with help in these matters. Though not exhaustive, the coverage is broad: thin-film flows, Saffman-Taylor fingering, flows in arteries and veins, convective and absolute instabilities, turbulence, natural convection, magnetohydrodynamics, solidification, geological fluid mechanics, oceanography and atmospheric dynamics are all introduced and reviewed by established authorities. Thus the book will not only be suitable for graduate-level courses but also for specialists seeking introductions to other areas.

Customer Reviews:
Only For Real Shakespeare Lovers.......2006-12-08
This volume will please real Shakespeare lovers and would make a valuable addition to a library. Let me explain.
About ten years ago, for a Christmas present, my girlfriend bought be a copy of the Complete Works that was published by the now defunct Crown Books. She paid about$30. Although I appreciated the thought, I did not think the book would be anything worth keeping. Furthermore, I was more disappointed when I did a quick check and confirmed that it appeared to be just a reprint of the First Folio, with all of its faults.
Yet, the more I examined its contents, the more valuable this collection appeared, at least, to me. Not only did the book include all of the plays and poems, it also included Will's will, a biography, and other little notes.
I checked the fly leaf for the editor, and discovered that it was by a very well known 19th century scholar, and in fact the book was a reprint of his edited complete works from 1863 in three volumes.
Moreover, each play is followed by fairly pertinent notes and comments by other Shakespearean scholars from the 19th century. For instance, there are several entries by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
After reading the various commentaries by those scholars of that century, you will readily understand that the opinions and understanding of the plays were different from those of today. Taking Coleridge again, he writes a very racist opinion about Othello, essentially saying that Shakespeare couldn't possibly have written a play where a white woman sleeps with a Black man; indeed, Coleridge denies that Othello was really dark skinned.
So, if you want read unique or ancient opinions about Shakespeare, this book will satisfy you.
By the way, the current "Globe" collection is identical to the Crown books edition that I have.
I love Shakespeare... but this edition?.......2004-03-03
This is NOT where you want to spend your money. There are many good editions. Try Arden or Oxford. This one is NO help. Believe the negative reviews.
Great Cover. But..........2003-04-27
Saw this book on in a friends library and picked it up because it was so attractive. I've always thought i should read shakespeare, so i tried browsing in it. Not much fun. So i came to amazon to look for reviews. Now i see what the problem was.
Sure it seems awesome to have such a polished looking volume on the coffee table, but i'm starting with the Oxford student edition of a couple plays and finally starting to GET shakespeare! This one is too expensive a centerpiece for my table if i'm never going to feel able to understand it!
Neither "The Globe" nor "Shakespeare" belong on this edition.......2003-04-11
I am loathe to waste *any* time reviewing this volume, except that I cannot bear that the names of "The Globe" and "Shakespeare" are suffering by being used here. Additionally, I would save unsuspecting buyers some money.
Note first that Howard Staunton, the editor of "The Globe Illustrated Shakespeare" died in 1874. That is how current this edition is. Unfortunately modern corporations continue to reprint this woefully out-dated version of Shakespeare (the long-deceased editor requiring no royalty payments) and assign a "publication date" that makes this reprint sound contemporary. [Publisher names associated with this uncritical approach to reproducing Shakespeare may vary. This "Globe Illustrated" printing has come out under publisher names "Gramercy", "Random House VALUE", and (in 1983) "Greenwich House".] Caveat, caveat, caveat emptor!
Do not assume that "Shakespeare is Shakespeare". This version may be great "for your collection" but you will not find yourself wanting to dip into the Bard's momental works here. It is NOT accurate. Scholarship has advanced so far in the past century that those in the know LAUGH at many of the editorial decisions that were passed along in Staunton's day.
Rather than repeat here my thoughts about better editions, please see the discussion in the review of one of the Gramercy printings ( ISBN 0517053616 ) for REWARDING editions of Shakespeare [ e.g., those published by Arden/Routledge, Oxford, Addison-Wesley (ed.: David Bevington), Penguin ].
Do your love of Shakespeare some justice and do not support this attractive *looking* offer.
PS: The illustrations are quaint Victorian fantasies - obscuring rather than illustrating what the Elizabethan master achieved. For an appreciation of how we may finally reach back to the original Shakespearean intent (without Victorian filters), please see Fintan O'Toole's recently re-released "Shakespeare is Hard, but So Is Life" (search for Amz ISBN 186207528X ).
A gorgeous book for any collection.......2000-06-03
I'll not claim to be a Shakespeare expert, nor will I even lie and say that I've read all the plays. Shakespeare's work hardly needs my uneducated commentary. What I will say is that this is a simply gorgeous book, rich with explanations of those phrases my beloved English teacher understood and I've long since forgotten. The pages are thin, and the type unique. You feel like you are travelling to another place and time. Beautiful end papers, gilt edges and delicate illustrations make this a visual treat. This book will be much argued over when the time comes for it to be passed to the next generation.
