Book Description

When most people think of Detroit and music, they think of the Motown sound. But what many people forget is that Detroit has a remarkable jazz history, which became a major influence in what came to be known as the Motown sound.
Before Motown is the first book about the history of jazz in Detroit. It shows the significant impact Detroit has had on the development of jazz in America, with its own sound, distinct from that of the other jazz centers of Chicago, New Orleans, St. Louis, or Kansas City. Starting with the big bands in the 1920s,with groups like the McKinney's Cotton Pickers and Jean Goldkette's Orchestra, and continuing into the 1950s, Detroit experienced a golden age of modern jazz centered around clubs like the Blue Bird Inn. That jazz scene comes alive in interviews with musicians and club owners, combined with unique period photographs and advertisements. In addition, Detroit's vital jazz scene is placed in its social context, particularly within the changing relations between blacks and whites at the time.
Long overdue, Before Motown tells the story of Detroit jazz as it really happened, told by the people who lived it. More importantly, it shows how life can mirror art in the most pragmatic of American cities, Detroit.
Lars Bjorn is Professor of Sociology, University of Michigan, Dearborn, and the author of numerous articles and publications about jazz. Jim Gallert is Vice President of the Jazz Alliance of Michigan and a veteran jazz broadcaster. He has been involved with the Detroit jazz scene for over twenty-five years.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable piece of Music History.......2005-11-15

My uncle, Joe Jaffee owned the Parrot Lounge along with Al Green and others. He told some cute stories of the club, including the time he got mad at Billy Eckstine for smoking marijuana. The parrot, as legend goes, became so foul-mouthed from listening to the drunken customers, that my Uncle finally had to get rid of it.
This book is extremely well-researched; maps are included of where the spots were located, and the pictures are very vivid. There was a recent book published about Detroit's history that completely ignored the nightclubs, and this book fills in the gap. In fact, in most books that have been written about Detroit's nightclub scene, you always see Al Green and the Flame, but never a word about the other clubs and or owners.

This book is definitely a must-have for music lovers and historians alike.

5 out of 5 stars Just tell the taxi driver, "Paradise Valley".......2001-11-04

Of course nowadays they would just look at you like you were crazy, but in Detroit from the 30's through the 50's they would have taken you to one of the places described in this book: Club Plantation, the El Sino, the Greystone Ballroom, the Forest Club, Frolic Show Bar, Flame Show Bar, Cozy Corner, Blue Bird Inn, Sportree's Music Bar, or any of about 90 others. This book has the maps, pictures, facts, anecdotes, and solid economic and social explanations to bring this era alive. This history has already been so erased from the face of Detroit that there are hardly even any decaying buildings left. All is empty lots with bricks sticking out of the soil; places as evocative as the service drive of an expressway. Who could know that Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Bix Beiderbecke, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, played or spent time here?

How else could you know about Detroit musicians like drummer J. C. Heard who fanned out across the country, blending their talents into the bands of Lionel Hampton, Fletcher Henderson, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and many others?

You might read this book to see how the Detroit influence added to the influences of New Orleans, New York and Chicago to the world of jazz.

Or you might read it to find out why Detroit is where it's at in its own musical history.

Or if you lived in Detroit, you might read it to understand the significance of the mute things around you, through which maybe you drive to work each day.

But man, read it!

4 out of 5 stars GREAT for the parks it covers, but doesn't cover enough.......2006-08-10

I found the information in this book much more useful than any other travel guide I have purchased. The lodging information for Yellowstone, for example, describes the state of specific room types at each location!

This book's one failing is its skimpy selection of parks.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-04-28

I really like this book. While it is supposedly geared for kids, I think it's very useful for finding interesting things to do at National Parks for everybody. I don't know why I didn't know this - but when I looked at the table of contents I realized just how few National Parks there are in the East. One side effect of reading this book is that it's made me realize what a precious resource these National Parks are to all of us, and it makes me wonder why there aren't more of them.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-06-27

I bought this book prior to a two week 7 national park trip we just took with our two kids. (amazing trip) After reading the book, I quickly realized that there was no information further than just the basic facts that i had collected from the various national park websites. In fact, i opened it once on our trip only to read the facts sheet about each state (not worth the price of the book). I highly recommend the Moon books which is filled with EVERYTHING you need - from campgrounds to great restaurants to kid friendly hikes.

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!!!.......2001-05-16

This book was exactly what i was looking for as a planned a summer vacation with my kids to a couple of National Parks. It helped emensly and my kids were surpised at how much cool stuff we found to do on the trip because of this book, they were expecting a borking trip where all they did was ride around in the back of the van, but got much more. Thanks alot for writting this book, hopefully soon ill have a use for your Carribean with kids book!!

5 out of 5 stars EXACTLY what I was hoping for...........2000-05-30

I bought this book for the family vacation that we are planning for the summer. We found it very helpful for the kids! This book has a great variety of things to do for the whole family. I'd recommend it to any family! I've found that any book by Paris Permenter and John Bigley is very helpful for planning vacations. (We used their Caribbean With Kids book for last summer's vacation!)

1 out of 5 stars Not what I was hoping for...........2000-05-23

Titles can be misleading. In this instance, I was looking for a book that had kid-tested items to see, hike, and do on a park-by-park basis. What is included in this book are an introductory section on what is available for kids in most national parks on a nation wide basis, and individual chapters on each park with lots of non-kid generic information with, at best, a paragraph vaguely related to kid stuff.

There are hundreds of natural playgrounds scattered across the U.S.--from Cape Hatteras to the Great Smoky Mountains, from Cape Cod to Bryce Canyon, not to mention Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and the Grand Tetons. They're spread out like giant economical, ecological family resorts of unsurpassed beauty--with free entertainment like hiking and swimming and horseback riding, and various accommodation options, from hike-in campsites to the relative luxury of park cabins. And they invite great family vacations, if you plan for it. Unplanned, the family camping trip can become the nightmare of a lifetime, stuck in the dark with no reservations, inadequate equipment, and a hungry carload growing crankier by the moment.

This is where Wohlforth's guidebook comes in. Section one is devoted to planning the trip, choosing the park, and deciding when to go. Then come the national parks, first those on the Eastern Seaboard, followed by the Great Smoky Mountains, the Southwest, the Rockies, the Sierra Nevada sites, and the West Coast. For each, Wohlforth provides maps, phone numbers, addresses, and Web sites to contact, and insights into the region's natural history. Each park is described fully, from its terrain and animal and plant life to special attractions (like geysers, peaks, and waterfalls) and all the lodging options. Wohlforth tells how far in advance you need to reserve, when to go, how much time you might want to spend, and what to pack. He explains how to get there, what facilities the park provides, what the entrance fees are, and which activities are available, as well as any other details you might wish you'd known about in advance, enabling you and your family to plan and then enjoy the trip you envisioned. --Stephanie Gold

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent, but...........2006-03-03

This book gets an A+ with one caveat.

First, for the parks included in the book, the reviews are comprehensive and detailed. After trying to plan my southwest vacation using just the web (and getting that "glazed over" look in my eyes), I found this book helped me immensely. It's become my "travel bible". He really does focus on the family part of "family vacations".

He presents a good arguement for the benefits of taking children on "natural" vacations, no matter what the age.

The one caveat...he only reviews 16 national parks! (There are over 300 in the National Park System). Granted, reviewing smaller parks that don't qualify for "family vacation" status wouldn't make sense, nevertheless I was disappointed to see that none of the South Dakota parks such as Mount Rushmore and the Badlands nor Glacier in Montana, Shenandoah National Park in VA, or any of the Alaska Parks were included. Obviously, this book is so good that it has left me wanting for more.

Before purchasing this book I would make sure that the park you want to visit is included.

This book was great on my family trip to the Grand Canyon. Not only did I learn a lot of history, but it was also very practical. It included things like safety, restrooms, facilities, when to go, and how much time to allot. It also offered reviews of camping accommodations and gave ideas on activities ranging from biking, nature walks, horseback riding, swimming, and tide pooling. My kids enjoyed everything I planned.

Bruce Merrifield, eminent American scientist, 1984 Nobel Prize winner and professor at The Rockefeller University, is noted for his single-handed development of solid phase peptide synthesis. The progress of biochemistry and related fields is closely correlated with the availability of pure peptides, and in this volume, Merrifield describes nearly 40 years of progress. The warmth and kindness of this sincere gentleman is described by his personal experiences. Many photographs depict both the professional as well as the personal side of Bruce Merrifield.

A very hilarious novel. The author is someone who I would like to know. Such a fun book.

I accidentally bought this book, thinking it was BY Billie Letts. Boy am i glad i made that mistake! I laughed so hard i had tears coming from all orifices. Thank you Molly Griffis for a wonderful ride!

                4 out of 5 stars It's like reading someone's diary.......2002-10-15

I enjoyed reading these letters between best friends. Reminds me of my own letters from best friends I've kept over the years ... maybe not so cleverly written, but just as dear and fun to read. Molly and Billie are fortunate, blessed to have each other. Bet they have hilarious pajama parties! and get togethers ... and understanding, patient, husbands. Keep the letters coming, ladies. I know I'm looking forward to more.

Thank you God, for creating Molly Levite Griffis. I have never in my life laughed so hard and so much reading a book. As a confirmed bookaholic, I assure you that is just a few books shy of a load. I was laughing so loud I kept waking my husband up!
It a good thing I live all the way down in Houston, otherwise, I'd be camping on Molly's doorstep until she swore we were friends. I have never connected so completely with a writer, maybe part of it is we are the same age and I, too, come from the state where the wind comes sweeping down the plain.
Good Golly Miss Molly, you are some special zany lady with not only a talent for writing, but also a talent for life. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for this refreshing book.

                4 out of 5 stars Great Fun!.......2000-12-13

What a lot of fun I had reading this book. Whilst not totally convinced that any of Molly's outrageous stories are actually true, I honestly don't care. This collection of letters brightened up a cold, snowy Oklahoma afternoon for me and for that I am grateful. I am newly arrived to Oklahoma and am delighted to know that there are people here with wonderful senses of humor and such kind hearts.
