Book Description

Just as digital technology transformed our world faster and in ways that would have been unimaginable mere decades ago, genetic science is about to radically alter our lives -- and in ways perhaps even more dramatic and profound. Sooner than you can imagine, human beings will be capable of diagnosing their own illnesses, designating the sex of their children, even designing the food they eat -- all as easily as using a cell phone. The genetic revolution has arrived, the genome has been mapped, and much of the technology is available now. Now is the time for every one of us to take control of our DNA, and one man is uniquely qualified to show us how: Glenn McGee, pioneer in the study of "home genetics" and wunderkind of the exciting world found at the nexus of life science, bioethics, and computer technology.

One of the most respected authorities in the field of genomics -- the study of the genetic "software" inside plants, animals, and us -- McGee takes us on an eye-opening journey behind the headlines and into the heart of this formidable cutting-edge science, revolutionizing the global debate about genetics with an energy and a plan that are certain to surprise, delight, and amaze fellow experts and laypersons alike. McGee has written the first user's guide to genomics, outlining the ways in which ordinary people will soon be using genetic information in radically new ways at home, at work, and at leisure.

Probing the far-ranging ethical and legal implications of genomic research, McGee tackles its most controversial and hotly debated aspects -- from patenting your DNA to genetic engineering at the supermarket -- and explodes unnecessary fears about this wondrous new knowledge. In fact, most readers of this book will no doubt find themselves making life-changing decisions about everything from insurance policies to hobbies to school selection to groceries.

We live in a brave new world. Beyond Genetics is a clear, accessible, reassuring guide to the real-life choices every one of us faces, and it provides us with the knowledge we need to take the right steps forward into tomorrow ... and beyond.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking Yet Readable.......2006-01-12

McGee's predictions, while some may seem infeasible, are thought provoking and founded on ample research in today's biotechnology market.
As a student taking AP Biology, I found this book to be wholly readable; it touched on topics I've had to study, but no where did it become tedious or perplexing.

5 out of 5 stars Are Designer Genes in Your Future?.......2004-02-10

McGee does an excellent job of sorting through the hype about genes and genetic engineering putting to bed some issues that seem to be frightening large amounts of people (like genetically modified food) and raising issues that do not appear to be on anyone's radar screen (patents issued to large, money-making corporations for YOUR genes). He explains in terms understandable by almost everyone why it matters that we look harder at what is being done and by whom. Too many articles on this topic today seem to concentrate on genetic manipulation that will pass on to future generations of plants or animals and thus be a major factor in evolution. But this book focuses on what can or can't be done with genes in the current generation, a much more clear and present danger (or benefit).

The only fault I could find with the book is that the subtitle might lead a person to believe he had more control over where, when and by whom genetic engineering will impact his life. Unless more of us get together to help craft policies and laws about the use of genetics, the answers will all come from those who stand to profit moneywise from your genes.

                    Book Description

Radical Theory of Rings distills the most noteworthy present-day theoretical topics, gives a unified account of the classical structure theorems for rings, and deepens understanding of key aspects of ring theory via ring and radical constructions. Assimilating radical theory's evolution in the decades since the last major work on rings and radicals was published, the authors deal with some distinctive features of the radical theory of nonassociative rings, associative rings with involution, and near-rings. Written in clear algebraic terms by globally acknowledged authorities, the presentation includes more than 500 landmark and up-to-date references providing direction for further research.

                            Book Description

This book contains the doctoral dissertations of three students from Novosibirsk who participated in the seminar of L. A. Bokut'. The dissertation of Gerasimov focuses on Cohn's theory of noncommutative matrix localizations. Gerasimov presents a construction of matrix localization that is not directly related to (prime) matrix ideals of Cohn, but rather deals with localizations of arbitrary subsets of matrices over a ring. The work of Valitskas applies ideas and constructions of Gerasimov to embeddings of rings into radical rings (in the sense of Jacobson) to develop a theory essentially parallel to Cohn's theory of embeddings of rings into skew fields. Nesterenko's dissertation solves some important problems of Anan'in and Bergman about representations of (infinite-dimensional) algebras and categories in (triangular) matrices over commutative rings.

This is part of a new series of guides to contemporary novels. The aim of the series is to give readers accessible and informative introductions to some of the most popular, most acclaimed and most influential novels of recent years - from `The Remains of the Day' to `White Teeth'. A team of contemporary fiction scholars from both sides of the Atlantic has been assembled to provide a thorough and readable analysis of each of the novels in question.

2 out of 5 stars waste of money.......2007-03-28

                                    1) This book is very short. It's even shorter since some of it is stuff like telling you were to look on the internet for more information (so if you don't know how to use google maybe its helpful).
                                    2) I didn't find much insight here, it's mostly showing how literary terms like "politicizing the aesthetic" and "aestheticizing the political" relate to the book. I don't find it added to my understanding of Underworld.
                                    3) There are tons of typos in this book.
It basically reads like some college student's senior thesis that they turned in without even proofreading. Don't buy it. It exists for one purpose only - to get your money. Just my opinion, the other reviewers seemed to think it was good, but that wasn't my experience.

5 out of 5 stars Just about Perfect.......2003-07-31

An excellent explication of DeLillo's most massive, sprawling fustercluck of brilliance. Along with DeLillo's White Noise, Underworld will still be read when we're all dead, and Duvall concisely crystallizes many of the reasons why. Underworld burrows beneath the sometimes shiny, sometimes scary surfaces of an enormous range of seemingly disparate Cold War territory, and Duvall goes a very long way (in a remarkably short space) toward putting together its pieces, and illuminating its insights. I read this reader's guide after reading Underworld, and it made me want to read the novel again. Bravo!!

4 out of 5 stars a difficult task, well done.......2002-03-02

How do you even begin to analyze the magnitude of DeLillo's achievement in 'Underworld'? This little book is a good place to start. Professor Duvall gives a brief and informative sketch of DeLillo's life and career to date and then dives into the meat of his book, wrestling with some of the themes - it would be impossible to do them all - of the novel. He comes over as well-informed, sharp and widely read, without ever being pretentious about it. And the book is even up-to-date enough to discuss the post 9/11 resonance of the novel's cover image.

At times a little dry for my taste, but that is a minor quibble. Duvall has packed a lot of thought into a nicely packaged book.
