Customer Reviews:
A beautiful and informative book.......2005-12-07
I took Susan Neider's wonderful Color Country on our family's recent trip out west. We had never been there before, and traveling with Ms. Neider's book was like having our own personal tour guide. She tells you where all the "not to be missed" spots are in each park, and even the best time to see them. Then she provides great maps that make it foolproof to get there. We were never lost even once. We particularly appreciated the scenic route she recommends for approaching Monument Valley, and the detour to Goosenecks State Park, a wonderful spot our other guidebooks didn't even mention. And there was just the right amount of information about the geology of each area to keep us informed, and so well explained that we were still interested. She gives each site a Child Rating for its interest to children, and we found these to be spot-on. For example, she rates Mesa Verde a "5" (the highest child rating), and we all loved it. And now that we're home, Color Country has become our favorite souvenir. The photos are just plain amazing. This book is worth the price just for the portfolio of photographs alone.
Solid Information and Beautiful Photography.......2005-12-04
[...] Color Country provides travelers to the Colorado Plateau of Utah with essential information to get the lay of the land, a concise explanation of the geology of each park, a list of highlights, and gorgeous, honest photographs of the places covered. Dirt and gravel roads are not the focus of this touring guide; those who want more detail about backcountry travel would be advised to read an expert such as Michael Kelsey. However, even remote places like Kolob and Needles are, in fact, mentioned in the copy I bought. For the traveler looking for a superb overview, this book cuts to the quick and captures the essence of each park with finely-conceived text and images. Rating this book with one star is like buying a Brooks Brothers suit and then complaining because it didn't hold up when you went rock climbing in it.
Good Guide almighty.......2005-10-27
The photography is art and I am looking forward to our trip. I feel as if I've already been there.
This book gets it right.......2005-10-25
Susan Neider's Guide to the Colorado Plateau gets it exactly right. Read this book - or even just look at it - and you are itching to get on the road! The stunning pictures tell you where you'd love to go and the logical and readable maps and the clever photo icons show you just how to do it. After you make your travel reservations, go back and really read the book. The pictures will reward much careful looking and the literate, informative text is filled with useful and unusual details on the history and geology of the region. This book informs without clutter or preachy wordiness. And when you are finished with your trip, you'll have an unbeatable souvenir - though it is likely to be worn out! No matter, you will likely, like me, log on and buy another! The price is right, too, it won't break the bank. This book is an excellent value. Great job, Ms. Neider, thanks!
Unique and extremely well done - William Hunter.......2005-10-19
The best book of its kind and it delivers a remarkable balance of informative text, readable maps, and wonderful photos. This is much more than your normal guide book - it is a portfolio of why I love this place. There is a great deal of information that I haven't found anywhere else - or at least not from the same reference. I now have a copy to carry with me, and a copy to keep displayed in the house.

Customer Reviews:
Good guide for the independent, not-impoverished, visitor.......2005-10-31
The team of Sheehan & Levy gets around plenty, judging from their publications on an array of travel and other topics. Their experience, in this revision of a 2000 guidebook, makes for an efficient, straightforward, and perhaps more honest account for travelers confident enough to veer of well-trodden paths, but not so spartan as those in a Rough Guide or as quirky as Lonely Planet might cater to. After all, to boot, this is Ireland, and any sense that a visitor today will be far off from civilization or deprived of comforts is ridiculous, no matter how besotten with sylvan stereotypes a tourist might be.
I tested its usefulness by sampling two areas I know well, Galway city and O'Connell St, Dublin, to see what Sheehan & Levy found that other guidebooks might miss. For Galway city's bookstores, Kennys is mentioned (although it will close its historic High St store in 2006, by the way) but not the secondhand seller on the next street over Charley Byrne's. McDonagh's bustling chip shop might be hard to find, as it's listed here without the "Mc." But the map of the city centre is well drawn, and avoids the common problem other guidebooks invite by keeping the heart of the touristed areas out of the "gutter" of the spine. Lots of eateries & sleeperies are cross-listed on both the map and the following text; this book gives slightly less attention to sights and more to practicalities of food, bed, and fun pubs than its competitors.
For Dublin, it's the only guide I've perused that mentions, for instance, the Royal Dublin Hotel on O'Connell St. Its handsome map of this area is placed within the text itself, again cross-referenced with the surrounding practicalities. Arrows at the start of paragraphs on sights refer you to local DART stops, tell you how far the place is from the train, or send you to another page for additional information. This attention to linking the various aspects of the guidebook together shows the care that's gone into this edition. The general maps at the back lack the numbers for secondary roads, and so are not useful when on the road wondering where the turn is, but maps within the text offer more detail when needed.
While the book's two-shade print appears sober, and you do not get the plethora of photos other guides give, the space saved is better spent on hard facts, with sidebars filling you in on certain local legends and contexts when appropriate. The details on where to stay and eat and shop are kept at the back of a section, apart from the sights and maps, but this is common to most guidebooks, allowing you to read about the whole area first and then figure out later where to stop. It is a bit tricky to find your way back and forth within the pages due to the reliance on only two colors, but the marginal colors for different regions/counties on the page edges mitigate this.
Culture and history chapters append the book, in short essays, and the books recommended are up-to-date and varied in their approaches. Unlike many guides which play into the by-now false assumption that you will be able to practice cute phrases in the Irish language with eager & beguiling locals, this guide dispenses with the bilingual "can I have a drink?/are you single?" types of phonetically rendered banter that embarrass otherwise sober reference works.
In the front, a bit more information than usual explains the differences in accomodation, and the numbers for various transport options are laid out easily for reference. Pp. 9-11 balance the pre-requisite postcard-pretty shots with a brisk textual reminder that today's Ireland's much more bustling and perhaps less beholden to "tug the forelock" than before. If you want a direct guide to this changing Ireland, this is a good choice for the more independent traveler at ease on his/her own.

Customer Reviews:
EXTREMELY HELPFUL.......2004-04-03
This is a comprehensive guide which covers the must-see's and the off-the-beaten-track. The discussion covers the usual high traffic spots with greater detail, but also notes where to find an old style straight razor shave from times gone by, or where to locate old Viking Ruins or an obscure park. Identifies where the crowds will be, and where to find some solitude, and has numerous well defined maps. Defnitiely covers the in's and out's, lines, and provides enough detailed information concerning the well known sites to let you decide which are worthy of the wait. This is the best of many guides I have purchased.
Best all-round guide of Ireland.......2001-09-05
In preparation for a trip to Ireland, I think I read every current guidebook out there. This was the only one I took with me. It is very thorough, well written and designed, and goes a several layers deeper than its competition.
Extremely helpful and thorough.......2001-02-20
While planning a return trip to Ireland, I looked a every current guidebook I could find. "Footprint Ireland" is the only one I will take with me on my trip. It is very comprehensive, provides clear descriptions without tourist hype, and includes the practical detail you need to make the best use of your time (ferry schedules, opening hours, etc.) It also provides good information on local walks, short and long, an important part of any successful Irish visit. By far and away, it has more helpful information, well presented with good design, than any other guide I found.
Refreshing.......2001-01-21
It's nice to find a travel guide with subjective (rather than gushing) descriptions of all manner of things ranging from cities to hotels to vegetarian specials. This guide is chock full of phone numbers and web sites and price guidelines and has proved to be a helpful (and fun)resource.

The author combines the most recent secondary scholarship in the field, along with extensive personal archival work, to fill a long needed opening in the Age of Discovery history market.
Customer Reviews:
A good textbook replacement for world history courses.......2007-10-02
This is a 200-page introduction to the period of 1500-1700 in world history. It focuses on the Europeans' desire to travel and trade in distant places, thanks to their navigational and sailing technology, and their appetite for greed. While one can and should argue that Europe's states were not world powers in 1600, the author Glenn Ames makes a good case that these events still constitute a world revolution with great significance. The world had become connected in a new way, and it still is, thanks to what da Gama and the others started.
I could see a teacher assigning this instead of a pricey textbook, and supplementing it with interesting books on what else is happening in the world outside of Europe, or perhaps books from the viewpoint of peoples being affected by Europe. Achebe's Things Fall Apart is just one example from the more recent period.
Recommended.

Book Description
Academia and industry join forces in Aromatic Fluorination, as an expert from each domain contributes to this new text on fluorination of carbocyclic and heterocyclic rings. The book begins with a discussion of fluorine's unique combination of properties, including size, electronic effects, and hydrophobicity, as well as the historical development of its product applications. It explains methods for introducing fluorine into an aromatic ring, focusing on nucleophilic fluorine transfer reactions. The role of catalysts, solvents, and other variables are examined, and the scope and limitations of the methods are discussed. Of particular interest to those working in non-specialist laboratories, Aromatic Fluorination includes detailed descriptions of the new electrophilic routes to fluoroaromatics, in addition to traditional routes and alternative methods involving radical chemistry. Because one of the most important fluorine-containing substituent is CF3, the book explains routes to benzotrifluorides (ArCF3), including traditional industrial methods and modern alternatives employing C-1 halofluorocarbons and other fluoroaliphatics. An alternative to CF3 is CF3S, and several methods of synthesizing aromatic CF3S-containing molecules are described. Since the successful development and diverse applications of aromatic fluorine compounds have led to the search for new compounds and novel substituents, the incorporation of other substituents is also explored. Aromatic Fluorination concludes with discussion of the factors responsible for the successful development of pharmaceutical, agrochemical and liquid crystal applications and the potential for applications in high-performance polymers and other areas. This section also describes in detail important industrial aromatic fluorination processes and the relative merits of different process technologies and their costs.
Book Description
How real is reality? Are our images of the world mere inventions, or does an external reality correspond to them? Is it possible to know the truth?
These are questions that physicist and philosopher Heinz von Foerster and journalist Bernhard Poerksen debate about in their conversations. Together, they explore the borders of our capacity for knowledge. They discuss the seeming objectivity of our sensual perception, the consequences of "truth terrorism" and the connections between knowledge and ethics, sight and insight.

Book Description
Joy's questions and Jim's responses evoke in us an appreciation for what it means to do the work called teaching with the "living intensity of soul." May such soulful teaching flourish among us: here is a book that can help it be so.
- Parker Palmer and Sam Intrator
Every new teacher needs a mentor, someone smart, experienced, compassionate, and reliable to give advice, share strategies, and lend a supportive ear. What if every new English teacher could have one the nation's most-recognized master teachers as their mentor?
Now they can.
Letters to a New Teacher is the chance of a professional lifetime, an opportunity to read the letters and emails Jim Burke exchanged with novice teacher Joy Krajicek - letters in which Jim opens his practice, his mind, and his heart to guide Joy through her first year in the classroom. Jim fields the whole gamut of questions - from typical classroom-management matters to challenging instructional situations to sensitive topics like the boundaries of studentteacher relationships. His answers open the classroom experience up for novices to understand how to organize their space and time, how to plan instruction yet maintain flexibility, how to communicate effectively with the two-hundred personalities they encounter each day, and how to maintain professionalism under pressure.
As gentle, humorous, and supportive as they are practical, Jim's responses to Joy's questions are immediately useful and are presented in chronological order. From August through June, you'll watch as her questions become increasingly complex and see how Jim's answers build upon one another to create a considered, consistent, and disciplined way of thinking about the teaching of English.
Start a your career the right way. Read Letters to a New Teacher and put the thoughts of a master mentor to work in your classroom. Or give Letters to a New Teacher to a novice so they can discover a wellspring of ideas, a source for emotional sustenance, and a buoy for their spirits during difficult moments.
Customer Reviews:
Jim's deepest book yet.......2006-02-28
I just finished "Letters" and I gotta say, what a tremendous book!! It is a different text than ones previously written by Jim and truthfully, I was exceptionally impressed by the intimacy. Mr. Burke reveals so much of his true self -- both as a person and as a classroom educator -- that I now feel like I know him as a friend now that I have read this book. In certain places, it's literally like a stealing a wonderful glimpse into a man's soul -- really good stuff!!!
Obviously, Jim has a gift for words. The voice of the book is strong, distinct and nakedly honest-which I absolutely loved. If there is one element which might have been my favorite, it's the fact that Jim never skirts away from the confusion, the lack of surety and the imprecision of our profession. (NOTE: I am a teacher as well.) What we do is so much more art than science and in this world of standardized tests which only measure us in a scientific manner, Jim unabashedly address the "grey" in an NCLB universe that only evaluates the black and white. To be so brave about this admission, the conceit that, "Hey, there are times when I am simply going on faith here and there I times I fall flat on my face," is bold. Especially because society's impression of what an educator should be is so unrealistic.
The misperception about educators is that they are professionals who should know exactly what they are doing at all times and know exactly how to do it in an effective manner which can be statistically quantified by evaluations and measurements. And Jim spends quality time saying, "Hey Joy, it's cool to flub it up. That's how you learn to become better in a job where you never stop either striving to become better or learning." But society doesn't want to hear that. Not when Joy's students are the ones who will ostensibly suffer. No parent wants their kids to be taught by a teacher who is inexperienced and lacks educational mastery. Yet, Jim so honestly admits that even he, the author of 13 books, an award winning veteran of the classroom, a dedicated professional (which, BTW, Jim Burke's commitment to education is the HIGHEST I have ever seen - it makes me feel like a complete and total slacker), blah, blah, blah... even Jim Burke still finds himself "flubbing it up" now and then. This book is just so human.
In my estimation, Mr. Jim Burke is to be saluted for giving voice to the paradox that is teaching. We strive to be great but we are set up by the public education system at large to be mediocre at best, with too little time, too many students and not enough resources. Yet still, we forge on.
And this book inspired me to keep doing so.
Read this book -- you will be a better person for it!!!
Keep This At Your Side.......2006-02-13
I met Jim Burke five years ago when I purchased his book The English Teacher's Companion. It remains an invaluable source in my practice. Since then, I have added each one of Mr. Burke's books to my collection and have always found relevant and concrete information that I can take into my classroom the next day or use over the course of a unit. Jim Burke's Letters to a New Teacher is the next best thing to having Jim Burke in the room next door.
In the book, coauthored with Joy Krajicek, Mr. Burke allays the fears of a first year teacher who seeks advice on a range of topics-from classroom discipline to teaching writing to creating a unit. Each response, written in a convivial style, offers concrete solutions to Joy's problems and has already proved beneficial to me in the middle of my sixth year teaching. When creating a unit, for example, Burke offers several specific suggestions that will allow the teacher to create steps that assure student success. When teaching writing, this book has helped me to see that not only is learning to write is a process, but also learning to teach writing is as much of a process. Perhaps the most valuable lesson I learned from this book is that it helped to reaffirm for me that accepting the calling of being a teacher means accepting an eternal process of learning. There never will be an end, per se, only a deepening.
Burke includes several poems in his responses to Joy. Each one helped me to rethink what ideas I have about the teaching profession, about my students and about the ideas I have for my classroom. I strongly recommend teachers add this title to their collection. The letters in it will only help to reach for the excellence in ourselves that we demand of our students.
A Fountain of Encouragement.......2006-02-08
Jim Burke is one of those rare people who, when you ask him a question, turns and looks you full in the face before he gives you a reply. You get the sense that he is really listening-ruminating over his own appreciation for the question as well as his desire to genuinely answer. In his new book Letters To A New Teacher, Jim does just that. He doesn't rest on his accomplishments as an award-winning teacher--dispensing golden sound bites of truth and then walking away. Rather, he invites the reader into a conversation. A conversation initiated by Joy Krajicek. He shares the uncertainty, the failures, and the discoveries of the life of a teacher. He hears the yearning of Joy, who like many of us who teach, long to grow in our understanding of the relationship between teaching and life. For Jim teaching is not merely about a subject as much as it is about a lifestyle--a lifestyle of learning how to listen, how to recognize our own gifts, how to challenge ourselves to excellence, and how to grow our students. This is a book to be shared with every teacher, whether novice or veteran. What emerges is a fountain that brims over with encouragement.
Strength for the journey.......2006-02-07
Jim Burke is an inspirational teacher; his books have long been a source of support and wisdom. What is so wonderful about "Letters" is the insight Jim and Joy give into the very real questions, struggles, and satisfaction we all experience as teachers. It is refreshing to read such a honest portrayal of the hearts of two teachers. I came away from the book hopeful, knowing that there are others asking the same questions I ask, even in my fifth year in the profession. Reflective teachers will relate to this book and be helped by it, no matter how long they've been at the job.
