              5 out of 5 stars Another high-quality, small-format title from Lonely Planet.......2007-07-31

Lonely Planet's new series of Encounter guides allow the read to "discover twice the city in half the time." I've always celebrated Lonely Planet guides for their compact size and sturdy construction, and the Encounter guides are even smaller, with glossy and thin (but durable) pages. The information is focused and direct. Currency, tipping, and basic services are listed on the inside cover and in a closing chapter, instead of at the front of the book. The guide gets rights down to business in the opening pages with outlines of top agendas in Vegas--cruising the Strip, buffet dining, getting married, gambling, visiting vintage Vegas or cheap Vegas (which is getting harder these days), and so forth. The outlines have parenthetical page number references to the gaming, dining, and amusements entries that make up the majority of the guide.

The book reviews 14 Strip casinos and one in the downtown area (Binion's, which is now owned by a Strip franchise) and a plethora of museums, unique shops, and dining options. The guide has brief entries on all the hot night clubs and shows as well as a short chapter on excursions into the surrounding area. The author elects to focus more on a subjective assessment of the vibe of various attractions and let the reader do their own Internet research on room prices and other rapidly-changing details.

The small format book has a large pull-out map as well as several pages of localized maps. The monorail map is the essential Strip guide, with excellent 3-D representations of all the Strip casinos, color-coded by closest rail stop.

4 out of 5 stars Great portable travel book.......2005-09-15

This is one of the smaller books I own on Vegas, which makes it perfect for toting in a pocketbook or backpack. It has some great photographs in it, and the tabbed format makes it easy to skim through and find what you're looking for. Of course, because it's on the slim side, this does NOT have thorough information on all of the hotels, restaurants, attractions, etc. that can be found in Vegas. So keep that in mind.

This is great to carry with you as you wander around Vegas. It has the numbers of cab companies. It has the highlights of each casino so you can know what to look for. It has notes on restaurants, in case you don't have a particular one in mind and find yourself hungry. Most of the information is pretty generic - hours of operation, dress guidelines, quick descriptions. This isn't a massive tome. It's a pocket book. It gives you what you need to get where you're going.

While I have other Vegas books that are invaluable for actually choosing hotels and main restaurants, they are too big to actually carry with me on the strip. This book fills in that great niche, to have a reference guide with you as you go walking, to make decisions as you go.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book about Las Vegas IMO........2004-07-14

I am with one of the Poster,s that The LP Travel Books is the best Travel Books written nowadays. What I like best is the Road Maps at the end of this book for those who go to Las Vegas by Motor Vehicle.

3 out of 5 stars Average Travel Guide.......2004-01-30

I have always preferred LP travel guides to any other guide. The been-there-done-that pithy writing style, combined with coverage of the off-the-beaten-path areas make my vacations (or business trips) memorable.

However, this one stands apart from the other LP travel guides. This guide is only 232 pages, about the size of a novella. Missing are the cheap eats, some transportation information, and the typical insider's insights.

Reading the information, I got the feeling that this was less of an insider's guide, and more of a condensation of the visitors guides published by the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce.

As a result, I was somewhat disappointed by this one. Still, it is on par with the other travel guides on Las Vegas, just not up to the LP standards.

              4 out of 5 stars a very good guide.......2003-04-24

I've always preferred Lonely Planet guides when I travel. I wasn't disappointed with the new LP Las Vegas guide. It gives you pretty much all the information you need for a good vacation in Vegas. Best of all, it's a nice portable size. I was able to keep it in my purse the whole time and whip it out at a moment's notice. Despite the good coverage of information in this guide, it doesn't go as in depth as the Frommer's guide, which is probably a better guide for planning your vacation before you leave, while the LP guide is good for traveling around the city.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best.......2001-03-10

While this Lonely Planet Guide is a decent enough guide filled with the "usual suspect" type of attractions, hotel and restaurant info, I must agree with "A Reader from Long Island" (Australian comment aside) that this guide is disappointing. Yes, it seems well researched regarding some of the historical aspects of the area... (but who really gets a travel guide for a history lesson?) However if you are a frequent traveller to Vegas like myself you'll do better with a more off-the-beaten-path guide such as the "Unofficial Guide to Las Vegas." I mean really, to list chain establishments that are pretty much nationwide such as Applebee's and Krispy Kreme as "Killer Vegas Eateries" does no one a service and shows a lack of imagination. Give us a real taste of Sin City! Hey Avant Guide, when are you gonna hit the Strip and show us something new and exciting?

In a well-blended presentation, writings from more than 30 scientists and science writers span scales from the biosphere to the cell to DNA, encompass disciplines from global ecology to behavior and genetics, and explore links between biology and philosophy.

Connie Barlow is a science writer.

5 out of 5 stars From planetary entity to mighty molecules.......2002-06-07

Few scientific ideas have gained as much interest and acclaim as James Lovelock's suggestion of Gaia - the entire Earth views as a single organism. Connie Barlow's own reaction is as good an example as any, stating she could return to a childhood feeling of "science as nature which had been utterly quenched by schooling in science as facts." That dichotomy is the theme of this fine collection of essays - is the Gaia thesis viable, or has "science as fact" overthrown it? Barlow has assembled a strong group of authors to present for us to help in forming our own judgments. Even better, the list of works she draws from or points to allow each of us to delve into the subjects with open eyes, and, one hopes, open minds.

The title of the book imparts its structure, working from the grand picture to finer detailed areas. Barlow begins the collection with Lovelock's own definition of the Gaia concept - "the biosphere is a self-regulating entity." He ties his image to historical roots as well as scientific findings. Reminding us that "even scientists, who are notorious for their indecent curiosity, shy away from defining life," Lovelock is able to define Gaia beyond the normal environment we consider the realm of life. "Gaia," he says, "is a total planetary being." As Barlow notes in her afterword to Lovelock's presentation, "some scientists . . . have wholeheartedly begun the search for Gaian mechanisms."

Although not an outspoken supporter, Lewis Thomas, well known for his commentaries on science, is described by Barlow as viewing "the Earth's atmosphere in a Gaian sort of way." A stronger form of support is presented through the career of Lynn Margulis. research in how a cell is constructed and how that structure evolved was forced into a wholly new way of thinking by Margulis. Her detailed cell research led her to propose that many organelles within the cell are the result of ancient symbiotic relationships. Strongly opposed for several years, her theories are now the consensus view of cell evolution. Barlow sees the idea as a foundation stone for the Gaia hypothesis. Previously unrecognized alliances are now a major part of biological research, and Barlow includes several descriptive essays on this
                  phenomenon.

A Gaian organism requires a discernible structure, according to Barlow. Arthur Koestler is used to introduce how hierarchical structures are perceived in nature. Instead of tedious labeling of sub- after sub, Koestler introduces the term "holon" to define these organizational elements. Any individual of any species may be a "holon," as may be any societal group. The term is implied in following essays on "systems" or "organized complexity." Various commentators are incorporated in Barlow's collection to explain how Gaia works as an entity instead of just a collection of life forms. Game theory is introduced as a major aspect of interaction and cooperation both among and between Gaia's components. For example, Edward O. Wilson's science of sociobiology provides a framework for explaining such concepts as altruism and aggression.

Opposing the Gaia thesis, since much of its popular appeal rests with those seeking greater respect for the environment, is often considered an assault on "motherhood." Barlow uses three outspoken critics of Wilson to introduce alternate views. Richard Lewontin has derided sociobiology and its offshoots such as Lovelock's Gaia as "just-so" stories. Barlow draws on his writings attacking sociobiology as examples of "bad science." By projection, his criticisms must reach beyond societal species to the entire Gaian thesis. The ultimate, if indirect, challenge to Lovelock's idea is that of Richard Dawkins. Barlow uses citations from The Selfish Gene to show how life is based on the survival down many generations of the gene. Life, Dawkins demonstrates, functions on gene replication. Hence, Gaia, which has no genetic root, cannot be a viable "organism" as postulated by Lovelock. Barlow cites Dawkins' analysis of the evolution of consciousness as "the most powerful passages" in the book.

In an interesting innovation, Barlow concludes the book with some "update" essays by some of the contributors. Margulis, Wilson, John Maynard Smith and others, are given the opportunity to amplify on Barlow's selections. The final submissions are nearly as valuable as the ones she originally used. Her own final essay is an excellent summation and provides a suggestion that the views are perhaps not as disparate as a superficial look might indicate. Superficial this book is not. An outstanding collection and starting point for further reading,
                  this book is highly recommended.

Neiwert isn't a writer, he's a storyteller. So to the bad reviewers...go read your lit anthologies and bow to your cannonized icons while I rave about the story this book tells. Following the life of Donny and his rowdy crew of friends is the epitome of entertainment because you never know what will happen next. I've never read anything so real in my life. Neiwert's honesty draws you so deep into the story that it becomes absolutely addicting. You can't put this book down, but then again, you never want it to end. No...this isn't literature. Yes...this is better than literature. It's simplistic approach to taboo topics is refreshing. Neiwert is my new favorite author and I can't wait for Volume Two.

5 out of 5 stars The big gamble of Life..........2007-03-09

Unique read for me. Didn't like putting the book down, was captivated. Love the original style & produced quality. Guess you can say I could relate some what to Donny & his past decisions, such as friends, jobs, & etc., encourages one to become the person they are today. This book is intended for very open minded people, so if your one of those kinds of people I suggest you take the gamble as I did & purchase the book. Folks this is the real world, in incredible detail, from a very insightful man. Enjoy the read as I did. Looking forward to another book from this author!!!

5 out of 5 stars Reading this book = Being in a man's mind .......2006-11-28

Entering the mind of a man can be a difficult thing to do, but this book is the gateway to finding out what is going on in there and you'll be surprised just how much there is. The book is about a guy named Donny who lives in a world of fast women, loyal friends, drugs, sorrow, happiness, and so much more. Reading this book allows you to enter a place where rock bottom is where you learn how to climb. Overall this book is a great read. The only way you can hate this book is if you don't read it.

3 out of 5 stars Implausible but successful dumbing down of _The Gem Collector_.......2007-06-24

_ A Gentleman of Leisure_ is a heavily-rewritten version of _The Gem Collector_ for the American market. Presumably America could not deal with a somewhat serious and plausible novel whose protagonist was an English ex-thief, though McCrum's biography lacks any explanation of the rewrite. In the American version, rather than being a baronet who was expelled from Eton and became a jewel thief, the protagonist is a Yale man who acts like a jewel thief one night on a bet, and implausibly fails to explain this for most of the book.

The revised plot shows the typical weaknesses, amusements, and impostors of the later Wodehouse, though this time presumably done from necessity, not for comic affect. It depends crucially on preposterous coincidences and misunderstandings which could easily be cleared up in a moment. The romance also loses all its subtlety and believability, and is replaced with the typical (for the late Wodehouse) dependency on repeated coincidence and the unwillingness of the protagonist to do the obvious.

Surprisingly, the revised version was very successful, twice being made into silent films. Wodehouse later used these implausibilities (impostors at castles, mistaken identities which could easily be cleared up but aren't, and preposterous romances) to much better effect in his Blandings Castle stories. But they seem to have had their origin here, where they were forced upon him by the lazy recycling of a much more grown-up plot.

3 out of 5 stars Early Wodehouse - Good but not great.......2004-04-03

"A Gentleman of Leisure" was first published under the title "The Intrusion of Jimmy" in the U.S. on May 11, 1910 by W. J. Watt and Co., and in the U.K. it was published under this title on November 15, 1910 by Alston Rivers, Ltd., which makes it one of Wodehouse's earlier works. The edition I am reviewoing is from The Collector's Wodehouse series being released by The Overlook Press (in the U.K. it is The Everyman's Wodehouse series from Everyman's Library). The series is very nicely produced, the bindings are excellent, and the paper quality is high.

This particular story is about Jimmy Pitt, who makes a bet that "any man of ordinary intelligence could break into a house." There is some pre-history to the characters, which the reader is given in a hurry, and it feels a bit more forced than other Wodehouse books that I have read. I do not want to go into much detail about the plot because there are many twists and turns which are undoubtedly familiar to readers of Wodehouse. Still, there is something missing in the telling of this story. It lacks the easy flow that many of his later stories have. However, one can see the early elements of what would eventually make P. G. Wodehouse one of the great humorists of all time.

3 out of 5 stars OK Comic Novel Foreshadows Better Stories.......2002-09-02

First published in 1910, this is one of Wodehouse's earliest adult novels, and it shows. Wodehouse's fine comic prose is very much in evidence and makes it readable enough; the trouble is the blandly flawless straight-arrow protagonist and the soppy generic romance plot. There are some more successful comical secondary characters, including a New York burglar (whose colourful New York criminal dialect begins to grate after a while), and a jelly-spined hard-up-for-cash English Lord tyrannised by his overbearing Uncle.

Having read and loved some later Wodehouse, especially the Jeeves and Bertie stories, I soon found the more interesting elements of the book to be the foreshadowings of what was to come, viz:

                      · Lord Dreever is rather like Bertie Wooster might be if he was dependent on Aunt Agatha;
                      · Lord Dreever's unwanted betrothal would be relived by Bertie countless times;
                      · Jimmy is mistaken for a professional thief;
                      · and in the contrast between Jimmy's standard English and Spike's New York dialect lies the seeds of the juxtaposed Jeeves-speak and Bertie-speak that is one of the joys of those stories.

In brief, this is chiefly for the Wodehouse fan interested in following the Master's development as a writer.

Also published under the title 'The Intrusion of Jimmy'.

4 out of 5 stars Overlooked Early Wodehouse Gem........2001-10-11

Very interesting one this. While obviously not of the quality of his later work(i.e. from Leave It To Psmith onwards) this is a key early Wodehouse text. It almost reads like an early prototype for the aforementioned Psmith book, with it's country estate setting complete with valuable jewellery and potential thieves. Add in a very Threepwood-like peer with the backbone of a jellyfish having to contend with a formidable Uncle and Aunt and you have all the key ingredients for a classic Wodehouse.

If you've read Leave It To Psmith then on no account miss this one, it's not the best of his early books(probably Pmith in the City) but it's the most prophetic.

4 out of 5 stars Yet another great piece of comic writing.......2000-12-01

A Gentleman of Leisure is the first Wodehouse novel I have read which is not in the series which includes Jeeves. My initials misgivings were quickly overcome, however, when within the first chapters our main hero has not only made a bet that "any man of ordinary intelligence could break into a house," but is also attempting to win the bet. Sounds like a silly setup but the style with which Wodehouse leads the reader into it more than assured me I was going to enjoy the rest of the book.

Wodehouse's characters almost never work, rarely know what is going on, and are incredibly prone to misunderstandings. In other words, P.G. would have been a great writer for such sit-coms as Friends or Three's Company (with the caveat that Wodehouse is too consistently funny for either of these shows).

Wodehouse has a style of prose that makes everything he writes incredibly easy to read, even 90 years later as with A Gentleman of Leisure. His sense of comic dialogue is always right on and somehow the shear unlikeliness of every coincidental encounter goes unnoticed.

As always the plot (Jimmy Pitt, our lovable hero, is trying to woo his true love, Molly McEachern) is simpler than the characters. Fortunately it is upon the characters, and not the plot, that this novel relies.

Every city-dweller has seen them, ever city-dweller could list the telltale signs: the fur, the gold, the hats, the cars. They are the original macks, the original players. They are Big City pimps—the heroes of gangsta rap. Bob Adelman and Susan Hall dive headlong into their world in the classic investigative docudrama Gentleman of Leisure: A Year in the Life of a Pimp, an in-depth exploration of the underworld figures that populate our streets at night. The first book of its kind, Gentleman of Leisure, originally published in 1972 and now reproduced in a facsimile edition, is a collection of photographs and interviews dramatically documenting the private life of a pimp and his prostitutes. The people who appear in this book are not models: they are real people with real lives. Only their names have been changed to protect the guilty, their stories are real. Armed only with a camera and a tape recorder, Adelman and Hall entered the lives of the pimp Silky and his women. What they found flew in the face of prevailing prejudices; stripped of stereotype and myth, the pimps and whores that shared their tales were complex people embroiled in romantic dramas, with a code of behavior as intricate as the Mafia's, and a defined sense of self. This stunning exposé of Silky and his ladies, Lois, Linda, Kitty, Tracey, and Sandy, explains the passionate bond between a pimp and his "ho's"; why shrewd, street-smart working girls find glamour in their lives and choose to give all their money to their pimp; and why they stay with him through incarcerations, despite their jealousies, the burden of their work, and occasional beatings. You learn how a square girl is "turned out" to be a ho and a pimp's "wife." You visit the pimp's tailor and see the source of his fly applejack hats and his mink coats—the tools of his game. You spend evenings at family parties: one man and his many wives. You learn from his wives how this pimp commands such passionate devotion, and arouses jealousy and rebellion in the girls. He explains his game. This is a true story. The secret, intimate, and private world of a pimp and his whores is revealed, cinema verité-style, in Gentleman of Leisure.

                      Book Description

This is the story of black life that I witnessed in the streets of Detroit beginning in 1940. As a young boy, I learned to apply my skills of what I learned in the streets, then I "sharpened my game" and became a well known pimp and player. Those were the days where hoes were queens and looked upon as the first ladies of the day. They were also the days where hoes were dutifully shown full respect and honor for the role that they played in representing the players and pimps of their choice. We, as the pimps and hoes, took our place in the sun, to be or not to be, in the then generation.

Detroit represented the breeding ground of many pimps who rose through the ranks and became the top players in this sport of kings where they were crowned by their hoes. The crown could only be earned by laboring to master that which is born in the hearts of all pimps. If you were able to master the art of pimping, then you were among the elites who mastered the game. These are the true facts of my life's story, a total recollection of all the cities and towns I've traveled to as a player, pimp, and gangster.

Through the long process of time, I not only became refined and polished in the game, I survived the murderous Motor City long enough to live to write Gentlemen Of Leisure and give this game to you. All the people and places detailed in this book are real. Nothing has been changed, ignored, or left out. The only information that has been omitted is that which could later be used for criminal prosecution!

I enjoyed this book. It was Gritty and Real!!! Unlike some other books on the Pimp Life this one contains the true flavor of Non-Fiction, as though you were in a room with the author and he was recounting his life to you..
                      I highly recommend this book!!!!!
