The Greatest American that America Won't Recognize!.......2002-03-12

Plainly stated, 13,000 children will died in the world today due to water borne diseases. This will not happen in America because of the un-recognized work of Ellen S. Richards. She is the most shameful example of sex discrimination in the 20th century. She taught most of the so called great civil engineers that developed America's water and wastewater infrastructure in the first half of the last century. She ranks far ahead of Einstein, Newton, Madonna, Jane Fonda, Monica, Oprah, Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe, the Kennedy's and Rush. And to think that she came along at a time when most men thought an education should not be wasted on a woman. If you are reading this review, the chances are real good that you are alive today because of work of Ellen Richards. If you woke up this morning, it's because she made a difference in her life time.

We have Martin L. King Day for civil rights and that's good. But we should declare Earth Day in May to be Ellen Swallow Richards Day and be thankful for clean water.

She died in 1911, but stated a clear warning that applies today. "America must not confuse growth with maturity". Hence the problem with America today.

Folks, you will enjoy reading and learning from this book and will grow as a result. Mr. Clarke has done a great service in providing this resource for all of us.

This is the best of the Baltic guide books-- Buy it!.......2000-09-15

Wow, Roger Williams has edited a wonderful book! This travel guide is much more than a basic Fodor's or Mobil type guide. It is full of beautiful full-color photographs-- I would say a couple hundred... In fact every page has at least one photo. "Baltic States" is printed on high quality paper and reads much like a great pictorial magazine.

This is not to say it is a light-weight when it comes to material. There is substantial history and background included. It's enough to satisfy your interest, but not so much that it turns into an overbearing text book.

Equal treatment is given to all three Baltic states: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. It guides you though the must see attractions as well as historical spots. As I read it, I felt as though I had a person walking side by side through the various sights.

Another thing I love is their "Yellow Pages" format for the nitty gritty travel details at the back of the book. You'll find all the basics you need to know that all the other good travel guides would offer. Obviously they do this to make it easier to produce new editions, as well as locating all the key facts with an easy to use format.

This book receives my highest recommendation for an incredible travel guide and addition to your home library.

Disregard the review from the irate student from Riverside: there is no better textbook on the subject then Hormones by Litwack and Norman.

This book is really an awesome book for the subject. I have used it for both research and teaching. There are not too many books that cover the same materials at the levels of focus and depth as this book.

I think this is one of the few best textbook on the subject. The authors, Drs. Litwack and Norman, are well known in their field of research. They explain all concepts really well. The book is well written. All chapters have excellent references. I have the first edition of the book and have found that the 2nd edition is even better.

Don't waste your money.......2000-01-13

I bought this book for Dr. Norman's class at the University of California, Riverside. I must say that this is one of the worst textbooks I've ever read. It is confusing, unorganized and the charts and diagrams are difficult to understand. It tries to be comprehensive but fails to clearly explain most concepts. The only thing worse than this book are Dr. Norman's lectures. There are plenty of other better books on this topic than this one.

Bizarre subway ride through the underbelly of culture........1999-12-31

Although suffering from paragraphs that are simply too long and an invisible bibliography, Shaviro's work is a wonderful read, albeit dense. A reading of Grant Morrison's "Doom Patrol" is highly recommended as each of the chapters in Shaviro's work draws from Morrison's complex superhero saga; cursory knowledge of some of the other sources may help too, as they are numerous and vital to understanding how gross Shaviro's effort truly is. Worth reading, if only for the discussions on language (memes showing their ugly face again), identity, the information age and perversity. Conspicuously absent are Frank Zappa, Pee Wee Herman and Greg Egan. But then one needs material for a sequel.

The best single-volume study of postmodernism.......1999-09-11

The main virtue of Steven Shaviro's book is that it exemplifies what it discusses. Rather than sit back and presume to parse the postmodern world from the standpoint of a sort of objective, third-person narrator (in the mold of a Mailer, Bellow, or Kirkus) who remains ultimately "disinterested" in his subject matter, Shaviro dives in and swims with the strange fish populating his _Patrols_. How could one write about postmodernism without referring to postmodernists? Shaviro does so with perfect synthesis, and discusses relevant issues with poetic prose that becomes its own complex, ambiguous, challenging artifact. Look no further than _Doom Patrols_ for incisive chapters on race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, class, money--and all the other topics the high modernists would have us forget in the name of Kultur.
