Hi there my name is Gary Burleson. I am a student of Cynthia Fincher at the University of North Texas. We discuss many topics of Cynthia Fincher's book "Healthy Living in a Toxic World" in class and I have found that as a student I have only started scratching the surface of many serious issues. There are many things I didn't even think about until I enrolled in Ecological Psycology and Cynthia Fincher brought them to my attention. I strongly encourge everyone to read her book, it is very informative. This book is a wonderful reference. It describes the little (and inexpensive) things you can do to make your environment safer for your immune system. There are tables of reference. The ideas provided on cleaning products, personal hygiene, medical, are everything you need to know to help yourself.
It is short and condensed. You can read it quickly and use it for a reference for years to come. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to make their "space" a life-long healthier way to live.

It is a workbook and not what I was attempting to order. I expected a reading/learning media. This is only for use in classroom setting.
Highly disappointing.......2006-08-05
While the class I took that used this textbook was informative, this book was full of what seemed to be the authors' personal opinons. Like another person said here in the reviews about blame on the Bush administration, and lack of references aside from photo credits, this book seemed to be geared more towards giving you the biased outlook of the author than an unbiased view of environmental science.
I agree that this book is not fit for a college textbook, or any other type of education.
Interestign articles with a thick political spin.......2006-04-27
This revision must have been specially produced just to include all the anti-Bush rhetoric. In nearly every chapter, responsibility for the current state of the environment is laid squarly on President Bush's administration.
In addition, there are no references given for any of the information presented in the book. As a student, we are expected to take this author's word for it that everything he has presented is true and accurate, and that he is simply a repository for all of this accurate information. In fact, the lack of references is absolutely striking when you consider this is a textbook that is supposedly presenting facts. The only references given are those for photo credits.
Unfit as a college textbook.

This is one of the most readable environmental texts I've seen.
It is very comprehnsive and the coverage of the newest scientific results in the science of resource conservation is simply excellent. The content is oriented around a group of themes and applied to the concept of ecosystems and their management. Is almost as if the author has takrn the first halting steps toward a unified environmental theory.
Two negative points though. Coverage of forest resources is a little thin, and like most textbooks, the price is way too high.
Making environmental science relevant.......2004-11-28
Professor Richard Wright has succeeded where so many others have failed, by creating a textbook that makes the subject of environmental science relevant. After all, most students taking a course that uses this book are doing so because it's required, rather than as an elective.
As an adjunct professor of environmental science at Endicott College, I have reviewed many textbooks for possible use in introductory courses. This one is a standout, and based on feedback from students over the past four years, they, too, agree.
The text is easy to read, and enhanced by many graphs, charts and photographs.

Refreshing text on prairie!.......2006-12-12
I was really surprised when I read this book. I was expecting a more textbook treatment of this subject. I remember learning about prairie in school and it not being that exciting. I was amazed to learn how truly interesting and complex a prairie system can be. I find myself looking differently at the sides of the road and the countryside as I drive along. This book also does an excellent job of explaining in easily understandable terms a variety of scientific principles, and relating them to the prairie system. It is an excellent book to learn about prairie for youth, or youth with experience. It is equally an excellent format to introduce scientific principles to young people that are transferrable to other areas of science. The author writes with great passion and humor too. The pictures are FANTASTIC! Not only are they beautiful, but they are perfectly matched to what the author is trying to describe. I would recommend this book to anyone and look forward to more from this author.

A welcome introduction to the prairie.......2005-11-14
What is unique about this book is the bright, conversational tone used to deliver a large amount of information. It is like having a person who knows a great deal about prairies explaining all sorts of interesting things that you might otherwise not notice. The book is written for young people, but does not talk down to them, readers are challenged to understand and observe complicated concepts without making them seem unreachable. This book is about how to interpret what you see in a prairie and how to integrate what you read with what you see. It won't tell you what each and every plant is (you need a field guide for that), but it will tell you why those plants are there, and how things like weather and mountains and slopes and rocks and soils create prairies. After you read this book, you'll be able to use some of the concepts immediately to notice things in your environment, and you'll probably be moved to go find a prairie to visit and see all these things for yourself.

Probably everyone looking at this page owns a field guide or two or three or more. I don't even know how many I have on my bookshelves, but my feeling has always been that if one is good then two (or more) are better. Identifying that bird, that weed, that snake, that mushroom is, to me, a good part of the fun of being out in the field and enjoying both the familiar and the unexpected.
There is, however, a problem with field guides that they were never even meant to address, and that is the "how?" Field guides address "what?." This is a "how" book. How does something which at first glance may appear to be a relatively simple "sea of grass" turn out to be such a complex network of plants, animals, fungi, bacteria, climate, and geology?
The author starts with an interesting analogy. Just as an orchestra is more than the sum of its instruments so is a prairie more than the sum of its parts. And just as a orchestra has a certain structure which, in various configurations, can produce all manner of music, so too a prairie has structure and in various configurations can produce quite different prairies.
The title of the book is from a famous piece written by Benjamin Britten by which he introduces the complexities of an orchestra to a presumably young audience. Presumably, because his Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra is probably enjoyed as much by older persons as it is by younger persons.
So too with this book. Written with the inquisitive young person in mind it will certainly appeal to any reader who has an interest in both what is a prairie and just how does a prairie grow. Just as Britten did, the author takes a prairie apart so that the components can be understood and then puts them back together so that it can be understood in its entirety.
Thirty two pages of illustrations, most in color, and accompanied by carefully written captions, help the reader to understand just what some of the elements look like in their contexts as members of a prairie composition.
This book is a great introduction to one of our most elusive landscapes and should be read before visiting any prairie. If the reader has never had that pleasure then this book is sure to kindle it.

The pioneers of causal modeling are Mackie, Rothman, Shafer, Suppes, Rubin and Pearl. Although much work and debate on the subject came about through the discipline of philosophy, Aickin contends that the philosophers are not about to resolve the issues. It is the scientists particularly the epidemiologists that have the strongest interest. Although statisticians are primarily concerned with designing experiments to reach scientific conclusions, few statisticians have ventured into the area of causality. Don Rubin is one notable exception. Aickin is a biostatistician who is trying to make modest progress by elaborating on the need to design studies to deal with causality.
There have been many naysayers among the philosophers starting with David Hume. Many statisticians trained to warn that correlation does not imply causality assume that causality is not a provable hypothesis.
Aickin accepts the fact that causality does not have a clean definition and that there are problems with many of the existing constructs. But rather than shoot down exisiting theories he proposes to improve on them. Calculus provides a clear analogy for him. There were philosophical issues with the notion of the limit on which the Calculus is based but this did not hold Newton and Leibniz back from developing the mathematical theory that had many valuable applications. The same could be true with causality.
Aickin clearly point out the issues with causality in the first chapter. It is not simply a matter of event A causing event B since several events could cause B and could work in concert or in opposition. Aickin builds on the ideas of Mackie and Rothman using in particular concepts of minimally sufficient causality.
He introduces basic probability and unitary algebra and relates probability models to causal pathways. Medical applications include relationships found in Down's syndrome, obesity and gestational diabetes. In the epilogue he illustrates an instructive causal diagram for mountain sickness. There is also a chapter discussing the theory of directed acyclic graphs.
A key message is that we need to change the trend of scientific inquiry in medicine in order to design studies to identify causes and exploit causal theories that the physicians and scientists may have.

This book is a cute, fun, quick read. Some parts remind me of the "older" humor that circulates through the Internet -- but this is an original. I can almost hear my mother telling me many of these stories.
Uplifting and Hopeful.......2001-10-09
This author writes a heartwarming and uplifting book once again. She does not ignore the difficulties of old age, the sickness, lonliness and discouragement, but her tales present these very present realities in a hopeful and meaningful setting. Reaching out to others, maintaining a sense of humor and balance, once again well done. Just wish the books were longer, but at 90 years old, they probably seem epic. God Bless her.
Oh......So Funny!.......2001-02-12
One More Time, like the other three books by Effie Wilder, is so funny....a real delight to read. It ends much too soon.
