John Burroughs (1837-1921) emerged from an obscure boyhood in the Catskill Mountains to write more than thirty books, create the genre of the nature essay, and become the preeminent nature writer of his day.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......1999-05-24
I first got turned on to Ed Renehan when I saw him on C-SPAN discussing the book he wrote about the family of Theodore Roosevelt, entitled THE LION'S PRIDE. After enjoying LION'S PRIDE, I purchased and learned a lot from Renehan's beautifully written account of John Brown and the Harpers Ferry raid, entitled THE SECRET SIX. Then, although I'd never heard of John Burroughs, I moved onto this excellent biography of a fascinating but neglected figure of American history, and am glad I did. Now I will turn to some of Burroughs's own writings, if I can find them!
Exquisite.......1999-04-26
Ed Renehan has put together an exquisite, instructive review of the long life of John Burroughs. The old lion emerges in all his splendor in these pages -- intellectual, literate (he knew Emerson and Whitman among others), worldly (he had a mistress who was a New York psychiatrist), and above all, a sympathetic observer of the natural world. We need his perspective as never before. -- John Hanson Mitchell, author of CEREMONIAL TIME, LIVING AT THE END OF TIME, and other books
A real education.......1999-04-07
Edward Renehan has restored John Burroughs to his rightful place in the history of American literature and conservation. -- Frank Graham, Jr., author of SINCE SILENT SPRING, THE AUDUBON ARK, and other books
Superb.......1999-04-02
"Renehan's biography does precisely what it sets out to do: it provides the thorough, responsible, readable biography which has so long been wanting in Burroughs scholarship." -- Ameican Nature Writing, 1993 edition
Wonderful.......1997-09-13
At the tag end of our scarred century, we grasp, almost in desperation, for a new purchase on nature. To assist in this restorative effort, we can look back on the work and the way of life of earlier naturalists who tried to hold our neglectful attention. Edward Renehan, with this affectionate, critical biography, has given us back John Burroughs, one of the best of that surprisingly contentious (and interesting) breed.

We are coming more and more to like the savor of the wild and the unconventional. Perhaps it is just this savor or suggestion of free fields and woods, both in his life and in his books, that causes so many persons to seek out John Burroughs in his retreat among the trees and rocks on the hills that skirt the western bank of the Hudson. To Mr. Burroughs more perhaps than to any other living American might be applied these words in Genesis: "See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the Lord hath blessed"--so redolent of the soil and of the hardiness and plenitude of rural things is the influence that emanates from him.

Book Description
SHARP EYES: JOHN BURROUGHS AND AMERICAN NATURE WRITING is the first full collection of essays and scholarship about John Burroughs, who was one of America's greatest and most influential nature writers of the 19th and early 20th century. Long overdue, this book marks a resurgence of interest in Burroughs, who was an immensely popular figure in his own time, a friend of such disparate well known figures as Walt Whitman, John Muir, Henry Ford, and Theodore Roosevelt. SHARP EYES includes essays on Burroughs's influence on the nature essay itself, his relationships, literary or personal, with his contemporaries (Whitman, Emerson, Thoreau, Muir), his engagement with issues such as conservation, science, and religion, and his influence on nature education. Readers of this collection will find a companion volume in THE ART OF SEEING THINGS, a collection of essays by Burroughs which includes many of the essays discussed by scholars in SHARP EYES.

Incredible Reading .......2006-03-31
Not only will you pass page after page with ease, but you will learn a great many things!! Burroughs will become a close friend and teacher (of language, ecology, nature, people, and life in general) of the highest order. His work is phenomenal! I cant recommend it highly enough!!
Read everything you can from him, it should definitely be required! Also give it to your children. The preface of this book is by a teacher in Chicago that tells of the remarkable learning and enthusiasm she found in her pupils, upon reading Burroughs. I can't help but feel the same enthusiasm!!
Do enjoy!
A Burroughs anthology at last, and a superb one!.......2001-02-24
Charlotte Walker, a professor of English at the State University of New York at Oneonta, has assembled the first anthology of critical essays on the naturalist, literary critic, poet, and philosopher John Burroughs (1837-1921). This is an extraordinary collection. Walker includes a wide array of voices, many of them (including my own) from outside academia. All have important things to say about Burroughs, who once towered above the American literary landscape but whose reputation has been eroded by time. A renewal of interest in the work of the Catskill-born Burroughs is underway, and this book is both a product of that movement and a light to lead the way. As the author of a concise biography and appreciation of John Burroughs ("The World of John Burroughs," published by Sierra Club Books), I congratulate Walker on a job brilliantly done.

Friend of Walt Whitman, companion to Theodore Roosevelt, and friendly rival of John Muir, John Burroughs is seldom read today. But in the last decades of the 19th century, his prolific nature essays helped spawn the Nature Study movement and made him an international celebrity. In 1875 Henry James praised his "real genius" for natural history and called him a "more humorous, more available, and more sociable Thoreau." In this illustrated biography, Edward Kanze sketches the trajectory of Burroughs's long career, from his childhood on a farm in the Catskills to his decades in retirement along the Hudson River.
As early as 1871, when his first book of nature essays was published, Burroughs was acclaimed as an American Gilbert White, the pioneering British naturalist and author of The Natural History of Selborne. Readers were charmed by Burroughs's enthusiastic accounts of ordinary walks made extraordinary by keen observation. By the late 1880s, when his first collection of nature essays for children was published, he was one of America's most popular interpreters of the natural world. He kept writing until 1921, when he died at the age of 84.
Edward Kanze, a naturalist and writer, has written an engaging narrative that nevertheless leaves the reader hungry for more information. The photographs, though pleasant, are sometimes tangential: "mourning doves reminded Burroughs of their extinct relations, the passenger pigeons," reads one caption. The biography may succeed as an introduction to Burroughs's life, but in the end one wishes for more of the master's own prose and a better sense of its social context. --Pete Holloran
Book Description
John Burroughs was one of the earliest and most articulate pioneers of the United States conservation movement, publishing twenty-eight books on the natural world during the height of the Industrial Revolution. As an author, teacher, and poet, he wrote with intimacy and feeling, illustrating verbal landscapes and providing philosophical insights about the environment. People by the hundreds of thousands relished his writings. The World of John Burroughs focuses not only on his work, but also on Burroughs's personal life. His friends included Walt Whitman, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Edison, and John Muir. The text is enhanced by Burroughs's essays and poems, and, uniquely, by endearing recollections of his granddaughter. With engaging narrative and illuminating photographs by author Edward Kanze, The World of John Burroughs celebrates Burroughs's dedication to studying the world and making nature come to life on the written page.
Customer Reviews:
A Joy to Read.......2000-02-16
Well researched, embellished with the author's gorgeous photos, this book is a joy to read. It is a biography and more!
For the mind and the eyes.......2000-02-09
The World of John Burroughs is a very readable biography of this great naturalist and writer. It is also refreshment for the eyes. Many photographs help portray the land and people that helped to shape this man. As a great grand niece of JB, I highly recommend this book for its accuracy and beauty.
Too brief.......2000-01-13
There is a lot more to the story of John Burroughs than what is included here. We need to understand the social and historical context in which Burroughs lived and wrote, and Kanze does not help us.
Good pics but brief bio.......1999-12-03
This large-format table-top picture book provides a wealth of photographs of John Burroughs but a very light and brief biography of the man. There is not much text. Great illustrations, but for details on JB's life go elsewhere.
Clear prose, meticulous research, stunning illustration.......1999-10-15
John Burroughs, the naturalist and philosopher, was a best-seller in his day (the late 19th century and early 20th), a Thoreau without rough edges and politics. If he has enjoyed a revival in recent years it is probably due to Ed Kanze's stunningly written and attractively presented biography, "The World of John Burroughs,'' published by Abrams in 1993, and now out of print. The good news: Sierra Club Books has come out with this paperback version. Some of Burroughs is dated today, and as Kanze notes, he published some mediocre essays along with the good stuff. But much of Burroughs' nature writings are brilliant in their painstaking observation and solid prose:
"Most persons think the bee gets honey from the flowers, but she does not: honey is a product of the bee; it is the nectar of the flowers with the bee added. What the bee gets from the flower is sweet water: this she puts through a process of her own and imparts to it her own quality."
Kanze, like a good conversationalist, leads the reader gently through Burroughs' life and writings. Burroughs was a real 19th-century figure: He consorted with the literary likes of John Muir and William Dean Howells and in later life was a favorite of Teddy Roosevelt and Henry Ford -- not to mention the Vassar girls who visited him at his rustic Hudson Valley hideaway, Slabsides. (Burroughs' private life was, in a word, difficult, and Kanze is unstinting in dealing with the birth of his one -- illegitimate -- child.) It is not surprising that Kanze is a naturalist himself and has been a museum curator. The book has the feel of a nature walk or a good museum exhibit, in which a subject not readily familiar to the reader becomes fascinating with the help of a terrific guide. There are well-chosen historical photographs and the luminous nature photography of the author, each photo chosen for its relevance to one or another passage from Burroughs' work. Particularly moving are the photos of Burroughs in Slabsides; paired with Kanze's own color photos of the house's preserved interior. You find your eye traveling back and forth from the old photo to the new, to see the same fireplace stone here, the unpeeled birch desk there.

I have used this as a textbook in my chemistry courses.......1999-02-10
We need better experiments in Chromatography gas and HPLC, also in atomic absorption to include graphite furnace and flow injection, also ICP techniques. I like the way the authors explain the principles of each technique, but I would like to have a new and reviewed edition Reilley and Sawyer. It is very valuable for teachers and students in the Chemistry Schools and I haven't found a better book than this one. I qualified with 4 because it's too old but still useful.

Book Description
Epitaxy is a very active area of theoretical research since several years. It is experimentally well-explored and technologically relevant for thin film growth. Recently powerful numerical techniques in combination with a deep understanding of the physical and chemical phenomena during the growth process offer the possibility to link atomistic effects at the surface to the macroscopic morphology of the film. The goal of this book is to summarize recent developments in this field, with emphasis on multiscale approaches and numerical methods. It covers atomistic, step-flow, and continuum models and provides a compact overview of these approaches. It also serves as an introduction into this highly active interdisciplinary field of research for applied mathematicians, theoretical physicists and computational materials scientists.

Book Description
Tracing an awe-inspiring oceanic route from Boston, around Cape Horn, to the California coast, Two Years Before the Mast is both a riveting story of adventure and the most eloquent, insightful account we have of life at sea in the early nineteenth century. Richard Henry Dana is only nineteen when he abandons the patrician world of Boston and Harvard for an arduous voyage among real sailors, amid genuine danger. The result is an astonishing read, replete with vivid descriptions of storms, whales, and the ship's mad captain, terrible hardship and magical beauty, and fascinating historical detail, including an intriguing portrait of California before the gold rush. As D. H. Lawrence proclaimed, "Dana's small book is a very great book."
Download Description
Two Years Before the Mast was praised by Ralph Waldo Emerson as: "a voice from the forecastle. Though a narrative of literal, prosaic truth, it possesses something of the romantic charm of Robinson Crusoe. Few more interesting chapters of the literature of the sea have ever fallen under our notice."
Customer Reviews:
The Hobo Philosopher.......2007-09-16
This is another book that I read aloud to my wife as we set about on our own adventure of "Hobo-ing America" in our little Chevy van.
I was thrilled by the fact that they brought their hides from California to the little tanning and leather processing community of Lowell, Massachusetts. I was raised in Lawrence - just down the road.
I picked up this book because it was a travel adventure about sailing around the world. I didn't know at the time that it was a Classic and that it had changed the life and working conditions for seaman at that time. My dad was also a seamen - at a much later date though. He served as a merchant marine during WWII. My wife and I were harboring the fantasy that after we finished our tour of the USA we might then sail "around the world".
We didn't.
This was a truly great adventure story and it is a true account - not a dramatized rendition. It was dramatic enough as fact. I loved it.
Mr. Dana being the son of a wealthy business man brought a truly conservative approach to the viewing of a sailors life.
William Z. Foster who also gives an account of life aboard commercial wind sailed vessels presents a much harsher view in his book "Pages from a Worker's Life". His account written several decades later also questions the exaggerated conservative notion that "improvements" were actually sustained or made in earnest for the sailors.
The most exciting book ever!.......2007-03-07
If you like adventure and thrill, then Two Years Before the Mast is the book for you. Some parts of this book we will have you sitting on the edge of your seat.
In Two Years Before the Mast Richard Henry Dana went on a ship that was going around the tip of South Americia. From storms in the Atlantic to icebergs in the Pacifac. They were going to California to trade. It was very hard on the sailors.
This book is mostly about adventure an hardships. Richard Henry Dana went on this boat because his eyes hurt because he was reading too much. He took a break but he did not know what lie ahead of him.
I would highly recommend this book because it is very exciting and thrilling. I would recommend thi book to readers that love excitement.
A Must-Have for the Nautical Library.......2007-02-13
Two Years Before the Mast is a genuine classic -- a must-read for anyone interested in ships and the sea and in American maritime history.
A great tale - if you can get through the nautical lingo........2006-09-03
This book is a great tale of both adventure and daily life both on land and sea, if you can make it through the sections full of nautical lingo. For example: "We were going along with studding-sails set on both sides, when, as we came round the point, we had to haul our wind, and took in the lee studding-sails. As the brig came more upon the wind, she felt it more, and we doused the sky-sails, but kept the weather studding-sails on her, bracing the yards forward so that the swinging-boom nearly touched the sprit-sail yard." (page 75).
The book has many pages full of such very detailed description, which I eventually just skimmed, or skipped, with no loss of enjoyment of the rest of the narrative. If the reader can find their own way to navigate the sailing terminology, the rest of the book is fascinating. The author describes daily life on a sailing ship in that age as a mixture of wonderful and horrible experiences. Likewise, he describes, in fascinating detail, what life was like in coastal villages like San Diego and San Francisco when they were just hamlets with a few houses and a church.
Reading this book will give you appreciation for what early settlers and mariners had to endure, and will probably make you appreciate little things like toilets, clean water, dry and warm clothing, and decent food a whole lot more that before you read it. The adventure of "doubling" the Cape Horn crossing is, simply, incredable and it is worth reading the book for this alone.
Chronicles Of An 1835 Merchant Sailor.......2006-08-03
First, Richard Henry Dana was the sole author of Two Years Before the Mast. There are currently a half dozen books in print in which co-authors attempt to share credit for Dana's work. Dana dropped out of Harvard and signed up for a two year voyage as a common deckhand. This class of sailor sleeps in a communal room forward of the main mast called the forecastle, or "focsle," thus the "...before the mast" in the title. Showing the attention to detail which would eventually get him through Harvard and make him a Boston attorney, he kept excruciatingly detailed notes, which he appears to have resisted editing.
At first the reader wonders why Dana wants us to know what ropes are used to hoist, trim, tack, reef, and lower each sail. Moreover why we need to know how to do it in fair weather and in foul. And at night as well as day. We wonder why he wants us to know the monotony of the stale food and the pauper's lifestyle the sailor lives.
We start to get an inkling of the purpose if the realism when Dana describes the brutal and dictatorial regime under which the sailor is governed. The editorialism which creeps gradually into the book shows the brutality with which the sailor is treated. By the end, Dana has evolved into a persuasive advocate for reform. He is not a radical by any means; sailors who act more or less as animals must be handled more or less as animals. Dana's prescriptions are relatively modest, incremental, and thoroughly considered.
We are left with one man's version of Junior Year Abroad, and it shames the frivolity of the contemporary academic traveler. There may be easier ways of learning the handling of square-rigged ships, and there may be more adventurous sabbaticals, but none come with prose approaching photographic realism. And it is Dana's alone, and "co-authors" should be ashamed.
