Book Description

This McManus Books edition of "Kid Camping from Aaaaiii! to Zip" is nearly identical to the original, which was a selection of the International Reading Association for 1980. Some of the information has been updated and a bit of new stuff added. For example, a host of web sites now exists where kid campers can view and even order a slew of neat camping information and equipment, not exactly Grogan's War Surplus but still interesting.

Aaaaiii! is the sound you might hear yourself making if you find a Crawly Thing sharing your sleeping bag... "Oops!" is what you should try not to say too often while it's your turn to be camp cook. Patrick McManus's descriptions of the circumstances that can produce these responses are hilarious. Along with the humor there is practical advice for beginning campers, dispensed with a generous helping of common sense.

Here you will find answers to hard questions such as how to tell the difference between hard-boiled eggs and raw... how to keep your matches dry... what to do if you encounter a cow-or a bear. In alphabetical order, these self-contained entries are capsule adventures in camping. Whether your kind of camping is sleeping out in the backyard or hiking to rugged country, you will be better prepared when you've read Patrick McManus on Air, Clothing, Dogs, Emergencies, Macho Guys-and he'll keep you laughing all the way to Zip. Illustrated by Roy Doty.

5 out of 5 stars Sharing McManus is my mission.......2003-02-28

I own an almost complete collection of Pat McManus's books and keep them in my drafting lab to share with my students. I require them to read for the first 15 minutes of each 90 minute block, giving me time to complete paperwork or prepare for demonstrations/lectures/testing. My books are now lovingly tattered from their status as preferred reading material. I overhear students sharing favorite bits with each other ("A Good Deed Goes Wrong" in particular.) They come to class quickly to grab their favorite book or claim one they haven't read yet. It is a delight to see them enjoy the books and humor I love so much!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent (and hilarious) resource on camping!.......2001-04-20

We have two copies of the previous edition of this hilarious book in our elementary school library. This is the first title I recommend to students requesting a book on camping.

It is also a great read-aloud to upper elementary age students, and since each topic--such as ants, beef jerky, cooking fire, gorp, knives or wire coat hanger--is usually less than a page in length, it's an excellent, quick time-filler. I usually just have to read a couple of these sections, and the kids line up to put this McManus classic on hold.

5 out of 5 stars very good.......2000-04-25

i got this book as a christmas gift. ive been hooked on Patrick F. McManus since. all of his books are funny, but this is one of the best. its the kind of book that anyone can enjoy both young and old (though there is some language that the parents of younger readers may not approve of)

        Book Description

Plant diseases worldwide are responsible for billions of dollars worth of crop losses every year. With less agrochemicals being used and less new fungicides coming on the market due to environmental concerns, more effort is now being put into the use of genetic potential of plants for pathogen resistance and the development of induced or acquired resistance as an environmentally safe means of disease control. This comprehensive book examines in depth the development and exploitation of induced resistance. Chapters review current knowledge of the agents that can elicit induced resistance, genomics, signalling cascades, mechanisms of defence to pests and pathogens and molecular tools. Further chapters consider the topical application of inducers for disease control, microbial induction of pathogen resistance, transgenic approaches, pathogen population biology, trade offs associated with induced resistance and integration of induced resistance in crop protection. The book concludes with a consideration of socio-economic drivers determining the use of induced resistance, and the future of induced resistance in crop protection.

              Book Description

Induced or acquired resistance to disease in plants has been known for many years, but the phenomenon was studied in only a few laboratories until about a decade ago. Since then, there has been an increasing interest in induced resistance as a new, environmentally safe means of disease control, as well as a model for the study of the genes involved in host defence and the signals that control them.
This increased interest led the editors of Induced Resistance to Disease in Plants to collect and summarise much of the current and older literature on the topic in a single volume. Each chapter covers its topic as comprehensively as possible, thus serving as a solid introduction to the literature, as well as expressing its writer's own views on the state of research in the area and giving an indication of where future research may lead.
Induced Resistance to Disease in Plants addresses the biology of induced resistance in legumes, solanaceae, cucurbits and monocots, since these are the families that have received the most attention, followed by a discussion of the molecular basis of induced resistance, its genetic and evolutionary significance, and practical applications in disease control.
The book will provide a background for those commencing work in the area, as well as a source of information for established workers who wish to learn about other areas of induced resistance.

                Book Description

Insect-Plant Interactions and Induced Plant Defence Chair: John A. Pickett 1999 This book examines the sophisticated mechanisms that plants use to defend themselves against attack by insects and pathogens, focusing on the networks of plant signalling pathways that underlie these defences. In response to herbivory, plants release a complex blend of as many as 100 volatile chemicals, known as semiochemicals ('sign chemicals'). These act as an airborne SOS signal, revealing the presence of the herbivore to the predators and parasitoids that are its natural enemies. Plants also have endogenous defence mechanisms that can be induced in response to pathogens, and separate chapters deal with systemic acquired resistance, phytoalexins, and the interacting pathways in pathogen and pest resistance. The book discusses underlying biochemical mechanisms by which plant stress leads to the biosynthesis of chemical signals from pools of secondary metabolite precursors, or even from the primary metabolism source. Finally, consideration is given to the possibilities for exploiting these signalling pathways by plant molecular genetics. The use of plant signals and their analogues to switch on defence pathways in crop plants is covered in depth. Bringing together contributions from entomologists, chemical ecologists, molecular biologists and plant physiologists this book is truly interdisciplinary, and will be essential reading for anyone with an interest in agricultural pest control.

                  Book Description

Understanding the mechanisms by which plants tolerate attack by pathogens, herbivores, or endure abiotic stress is a crucial part of learning how to enhance plant productivity and crop yields in the face of dwindling global agricultural resources. This book deals with the ability of plants to tolerate such attacks and stresses, and examines in detail various aspects of resistance responses and mechanisms of resistance. The content of this book is designed to be useful to those already knowledgable in the fields of plant resistance mechanisms, and those interested in learning more about these phenomena. This book is suitable for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and those teaching upper-level undergraduate or graduate-level courses in plant physiology or plant pathology.

5 out of 5 stars Benchmark maps are the best.......2007-05-09

Benchmark are bsolutely the best road atlases out there. I have the AZ, UT, OR, and CA maps that I have purchased for trips (I use my CA one all the time, but I live here) and find them invaluable. I can always find my way when lost, and they really do a great job of showing detail that you wouldn't expect, even in metro areas. They show the most random and remote Forest Service or BLM roads, and points of interest on those roads that you would otherwise need specialty maps to see. If there's a dirt road or otherwise going there, these maps show it. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Benchmark Arizona Road & Recreation Atlas. 5th Edition.......2007-01-12

Absolutely the ONLY book to have for exploring any state really. State specific of course. Enjoy my fellow explorers!!!

4 out of 5 stars Easy to Read, .......2006-07-14

I've been using the Delorme maps for quite a while and I've always groaned that they're too busy, don't have regional maps, and that I couldn't get a quality sense of what really was there by the way the elevations were presented. I think I'm satisfied with the Benchmark maps. In a way, they seem like what I'd see if I looked at a satellite photo. The colors are very pleasing on the eyes, they have regional and national maps, and the recreation listings are on par or even better than those in Delorme. The representation of elevations is done with color, but there are limitations to this method, as in some instances several thousand feet of elevation are lumped together as one color. Benchmark is now my recreation atlas of choice--not the perfect all around atlas, but definitely closer to the goal.

We used this and a topo map of AZ to locate property and find alternative drives through Arizona. Being Coloradoians, we don't always take the path that is the easiest! Thanks for the great book.

4 out of 5 stars What is that mountain range?.......2005-02-22

If you are a hiker or camper or backroader or are looking for a place to get away from it all, this atlas can certainly help. All major and minor mountain ranges are identified, and many of the roads that access those ranges can be found. Keep this book in your Jeep!

5 out of 5 stars An astonishing view of the lay-of-the-land........1999-07-21

As an enthusiastic motorcyclist, I am always searching for new and interesting roads to travel. I love back-roads and this atlas has enough detail to let the 'inner-explorer' in me discover places I never would have thought to look. In a car, on a bike, or stretched out on the living-room carpet, this atlas delivers. Benchmark makes a big deal of the "3D like" shading effect on their maps, and rightfully so. Not only can you find the mountains, you can also find the hidden valleys nestled away in their depths. The only drawback of this series is that there isn't enough. California, New Mexico, Oregon, and Arizona have their own atlas...where's the rest of the states? Come on Benchmark, get printing, I have serious exploring to do!

                          Book Description

The main goal of ASKING ABOUT CELLS is to evoke from students a desire to learn more about cell biology, which stems from gaining an understanding of the processes by which researchers discover the connections between cells and the rest of biology. By breaking down the typically encyclopedic walls of molecular and cellular detail, this text concentrates on presenting material through the energy of inquiry, revealing to students the questioning nature of cell biology. This exciting new cell biology text is designed for a one-semester, introductory course for instructors who wish to emphasize basic concepts and principles. This text portrays and emphasizes how the ongoing process of scientific inquiry has led to our knowledge of how cells operate. In this new text, cell biology is portrayed as a dynamic blend of curiosity and observation that has led to new questions and to a continuing quest to understand fundamental life processes.

5 out of 5 stars Book helps engineers looking at an introduction to Biology.......2002-11-28

I was an engineer and interested in learning about Biology. I went to a bookstore and browsed for 4 hours looking for a book that I could comprehend. Only two books fitted the bill - the first one is "Asking about Cells" by a Harvard Professor and the second one is "An Introduction to Genetic Analysis" by Griffith, published by whfreeman. I purchased both the books and I find that they are both good. It helps to read the "Asking about Cells" to put more detailed cellular functions in Griffith's book in perspective. Also, check out the "DNA from the Beginning" tutorial published free online by Cold Spring Harbor Labs. It also gives a glimpse of what is in store.

The main purpose of the book is to remove any phobia one might have towards biology. It neatly explains that Biologists do not know everything about cells (a common misconception of non-biologists). It also shows how they know as much as they know today. Finally, it has passionate interviews from the researchers who say why they continue to do biology daily.

The material is basic enough to be followed, at the same time, informative enough to go to the next level - understanding how genes work. I myself have now become a researcher in biology, thanks to this book. If you have never done biology ever in your life, this book is for you.

                                    Book Description

The general Method of Lines (MOL) procedure provides a flexible format for the solution of all the major classes of partial differential equations (PDEs) and is particularly well suited to evolutionary, nonlinear wave PDEs. Despite its utility, however, there are relatively few texts that explore it at a more advanced level and reflect the method's current state of development. Written by distinguished researchers in the field, Adaptive Method of Lines reflects the diversity of techniques and applications related to the MOL. Most of its chapters focus on a particular application but also provide a discussion of underlying philosophy and technique. Particular attention is paid to the concept of both temporal and spatial adaptivity in solving time-dependent PDEs. Many important ideas and methods are introduced, including moving grids and grid refinement, static and dynamic gridding, the equidistribution principle and the concept of a monitor function, the minimization of a functional, and the moving finite element method. Applications addressed include shallow water flow, combustion and flame propagation, transport in porous media, gas dynamics, chemical engineering processes, solitary waves, and magnetohydrodynamics. As the first advanced text to represent the modern era of the method of lines, this monograph offers an outstanding opportunity to discover new concepts, learn new techniques, and explore a wide range of applications.

                                        Description:
Many environmental problems involve diffusion and convection processes, which can be described by partial differential equations (PDEs). This paper will describe the development of a MATLAB template that generates a numerical solution to PDEs using the method of lines. The template will be applied to various unsaturated flow problems within soil physics to demonstrate the versatility of the method. In particular, the template will generate solutions for three cases (1) one-dimensional Richards' equation for vertical infiltration; (2) coupled one-dimensional Richards' equation and solute transport equation for horizontal water and contaminant flow; and (3) two-dimensional Richard's equation for unsaturated flow over a complex geometry. Where possible, the results from the template will be compared against analytical solutions to determine the accuracy of the numerical solution. In addition, the paper will provide a discussion on possible extensions to the template and future directions.

                                                      Book Description

This is the first book on the numerical method of lines, a relatively new method for solving partial differential equations. The Numerical Method of Lines is also the first book to accommodate all major classes of partial differential equations. This is essentially an applications book for computer scientists. The author will separately offer a disk of FORTRAN 77 programs with 250 specific applications, ranging from "Shuttle Launch Simulation" to "Temperature Control of a Nuclear Fuel Rod."

                                                      Book Description

Drawing from literary history, social theory, and political critique, this far-reaching study explores the utopian narrative as a medium for understanding the social space of the modern nation-state. Considering the narrative utopia from its earliest manifestation in Thomas More's sixteenth-century work Utopia to some of the most influential utopias of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, this book is an astute study of a literary genre as well as a nuanced dialectical meditation on the history of utopian thinking as a quintessential history of modernity.
As he unravels the dialectics at work in the utopian narrative, Wegner gives an ambitious synthetic discussion of theories of modernity, considering and evaluating the ideas of writers such as Ernst Bloch, Louis Marin, Gilles Deleuze, Walter Benjamin, Martin Heidegger, Henri Lefebvre, Paul de Man, Karl Mannheim, Mikhail Bakhtin, Jürgen Habermas, Slavoj Zizek, and Homi Bhabha.

In Imaginary Communities, Wegner glides from heady theorists like Jameson and Zizek to popular fiction like Dissposessed and to "cannonical classics" like 1984. Always readable, always introducing and always challenging, Wegner traces the evolution of the 'uptopia' novel while reorienting our reading of distopias by asking 'who's utopia are they?' Wegner sets up the concept of utopia as a mode of reading, asking us to position the texts we encounter in terms of it and in terms of social space as well, thus he discusses nation building and the onset of modernity in terms of the development of the utopia novel. Far reaching and deeply penetrating, whether you're a professor of literature, an avid sci-fi fan, an activist, or even an urban design specialist, Imaginary Communities is a 'place' worth visiting.
