    Book Description

This is the first comprehensive, up-to-date treatment of mammals in the state of Oregon since 1936, when Vernon Bailey's The Mammals and Life Zones of Oregon was published. It provides a basic reference for mammalogists, wildlife biologists, students, and anyone interested in mammalian life in the northwestern United States. Indeed, researchers in states adjacent to Oregon will find much useful information regarding the mammals their regions share with Oregon. Descriptions of all 136 extant or recently extirpated mammal species in Oregon are in the book, with information on geographical variation, diet, reproduction, ontogeny, mortality, and behavior. The authors provide range maps and lists of collection localities based on their examination of 55,265 museum specimens and brief accounts of morphology, species diversity, distribution, and fossil records. Keys to orders, families, and species are provided for identification of unknown specimens. Also helpful is the introductory section with its discussion of skull morphology, evolutionary history, basic taxonomy, zoogeography, zoonotic diseases, and the history of mammalogy in Oregon. A bibliography of 2,925 references makes the volume especially useful for anyone wishing to do further research.

      Description:
Clarendonian (12 Ma) fossil soils, plants, molluscs, fish, and mammals of eastern Oregon allow reconstruction of late Miocene paleogeography, paleoclimate, and paleoecology on land between the global thermal maximum of the middle Miocene (16 Ma) and global cooling and drying of the late Miocene (7 Ma). Six different pedotypes of paleosols recognized near Unity and Juntura allow reinterpretation of local mammalian paleoecology. Fossil beavers dominated gleyed Entisols of riparian forest. Abundant camels and common hipparionine horses dominated Alfisols of wooded grassland and grassy woodland. Diatomites overlying mammal-bearing beds have bullhead catfish [Ictalurus (Ameiurus) vespertinus], as well as fossil leaves dominated by live oak (Quercus pollardiana). Fossil plants and soils of Unity and Juntura are most like those of grassy live oak woodland and savanna on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada in northern California today. Fossil plants and soils indicate mean annual temperature of 12.9 (7.7-17.7) ^oC and mean annual precipitation of 879 (604-1098) mm. Miocene paleoclimatic changes in eastern Oregon show no relationship to changes in oxygen isotopic composition of marine foraminifera, usually taken as an index of global paleoclimatic change. Mismatch between land and sea paleoclimatic records is most likely an artefact of global ice volume perturbation of oxygen isotopic values. Instead, Miocene paleoclimatic change in eastern Oregon parallels changes in carbon isotopic composition of marine foraminifera, presumably through fluctuations in greenhouse gases.

            Book Description

After nearly five centuries, Leonhart Fuchs' herbal, De Historia Stirpium Commentarii Insignes (Notable commentaries on the history of plants), is still one of the most beautiful books in the history of science. The 512 superb wood-cut illustrations set the standard for fidelity and artistry in the depiction of plants. Until the Renaissance, Western herbals were largely repetitions of the work of the first-century Greek physician Dioscorides. In 1530, Fuchs, also a physician, saw an herbal by Otto Brunfels and immediately realized the value to his profession of accurately illustrating and describing plants. His work not only surpassed Brunfels', but achieved a lasting influence that still inspires botanists today. This Octavo Edition shows every detail of Fuchs' herbal and includes an index of modern plant names linked to the corresponding woodcut. Commentary by Karen Reeds.

4 out of 5 stars Good book - Not as bad as they say !.......2004-10-21

I have traveled extensively in Central America, Europe and North
America and I have found the BAEDEKER'S books to be helpful. Perhaps this book does not contain more detailed info as in other Fodor's books but there is a lot of information and the beautiful color photos really help. The book contains a very nice and useful map of Brazil. Most books do not give you maps !
I have used all the major guide books and have found all of them to be lacking in one manner or another that is why I generally look at 2 -3 books and take the best. I glean as much information from each book, thereby becoming a more informed traveler. Some folks have a favorite seriea such as the other Fodors's guides. I like Lonely Planet, Footprints, and the Moon Guides very much as well. Each guide will teach you something but however detailed they may seem they still go out of date, perhaps that is why this book is not as specific and probably more usefull long after the others have expired and are in their 100 th updated printing. I am not trying to say that this is my favorite guide book but I think it is definitely worthy of consideration, especially at the prices it is being offered here at Amazon.com...Sincerely ...a hunble traveler.

2 out of 5 stars Not Enough Info.......1999-07-15

I would also suggest Lonely Planet Brazil, as well as a music book, "The Brazilian Sound" (Temple University Press), which contains a huge glossary, maps and a lot of cultural history.

                              2 out of 5 stars It's not a Fodor's.......1999-04-13

My wife and I are thinking about vactaioning in Brazil. Suprisingly, there is a dearth of travel guides for this large and diverse counrty.

I've travelled extensively and have come to rely on the gold covered Fodor guides. Fodor's guides are lively, well written, authorative, but most importantly compel you to read-on; making discovery of the country fun and engaging.

Baedeker's is nothing of the sort. While Baedeker's has color photos, gloss pages and sold in a handy vinyl jacket; it's colorless and lifeless next to a Fodor's product. With its color and gloss print and its fascination with numerical figures, I felt like I was reading a World Book encyclopedia for a sixth grade homewoork assignment. The prose within is equally as dry, which was the deciding factor for returning it to amazon for a refund.

City tours are reduced to sites (described in 8-12 word blurbs) that should be checked-off. There is not much detail about what you're seeing beyond the mandatory numerical figures. There are no winding city-walking tours. Likewise no driving tours. No fun, off the path places to stop for chow and a view.

With Fodor's I've come to except long 3 page narratives, written in colorful narrative that lead me down narrow streets and allow me to stop for lunch in wonderful cafes. Also unlike Baedeker's, Fodor's gives you histories of the stuff you are seeing, some it gained though intimate contact of the author, who has obviously lived in country. Fodor's goes beyond "just the facts".

In summary, Baedeker's Brazil is a fact-filled, do the job travel guide. But it lacks a human face that discerning travelers have come to expect from other brands of guide books.

May I suggest the Lonely Planet guide for Brazil.

To survive and to propagate successfully unicellular organisms require a very high degree of metabolic flexibility combined with sophisticated regulation. This book contains critical reviews written by the leading research scientists in this topical field. The authors explore regulatory networks in a wide range of prokaryotes including organisms that have only recently been investigated at the molecular level.

                                        Book Description

Stability of Differential Equations with Aftereffect presents stability theory for differential equations concentrating on functional differential equations with delay, integro-differential equations, and related topics. The authors provide background material on the modern theory of functional differential equations and introduce some new flexible methods for investigating the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to a range of equations. The treatment also includes some results from the authors' research group based at Perm and provides a useful reference text for graduates and researchers working in mathematical and engineering science.

I read this in a period of weeks while homeless in a city, each day I would return to the library and read another huge section, never missing a day...the incredible prolixity and repetition, far from being burdensome, were like great rolling waves of majesty and freedom upon which I floated until the last cantos, surely one of the greatest climaxes in all world literature, brought me to rest and peace as Odysseus was united with Christ, and sailed off through the ice. And then I knew that for the rest of my life I would be as free as Odysseus had showed me how to be in this work. How's that?

I read Kazantzakis absorbing and compelling verse novel over a two-month period, rich and crazy as a Christmas fruit cake, and only to be nibbled in small doses. This is a deeply flawed work of consumate art; flawed, because it expresses a weltangshaung and philosophical stance utterly at odds with the complexities and values of the human spirit which it still succeeds in celebrating in verse of passion, intensity and beauty. Flawed, because it defines the human spirit in terms of the unsubtle, extroverted, violence of masculinity at its most obnoxious, a Nietzschean ubermensch driven to sweep through the human mind like a panzer division; flawed because it present a vision of utter and self-serving solipsism.

But of consumate art in that within those paramaters it creates, with a richness and intensity rarely encountered in modern literature, a detailed, elaborate and sensory world of image, passion and experience; and in positioning the human spirit dancing at the edge of the abyss, in celebrating the defining moments and relationships of life, it ultimately triumphs over its own weakness.

Its stages of the soul's evolution, its imagery and its passionate invocation of the sun link it with the old warrior-cult of Mithras; and while the leopards, elephants, drunkards and maenads seem at first more of Dionysos, the elegance and elegaic elements also link the work with the Greek Apollo, and the discipline of an exact and exacting verse.

Essential to an understanding of the twentieth century vision - and also to an understanding of what made so many of us passionately feminist.

A long, long time ago, I read this book and it changed the way I read literature. Kazantzakis' book goes beyond writing - it is a vivid exploration of the flame that consumes man. To go back to reading the frivolous so-called literature of today almost seems pointless. I am just thankful that Kazantzakis left us with such a rich body of work to read. The libraries were full of his books twenty years ago, but today I rarely find them on any shelf. To those of us who were lucky enough to discover him early, we know that he is the best kept secret of the twentieth century.
