Great Guide from a Great Series.......2007-05-14

I always smile when I see a Cadogan guide for exactly the places I want to go. First off, they are accurate and full of the personal taste and reactions of the author/s. Secondly, they are entertaining and readable with a wry British humor. The humor is always appropriate and in a strange way useful because it relates oddities from history as well as the present. I have strongly recommended this series to friends for years.

A 2D seismic grid in the South Caspian Basin, offshore Azerbaijan, is used to define the areal distribution of mud volcanoes and to make a classification of the mud volcanoes based on characteristic seismic features. A high concentration of mud volcanoes is observed at the southern part of the study area that coincides with the distribution of subsurface structures within the basin. Mud volcanoes with low relief (several tens of meters) are concentrated primarily in the northeastern portion of the study area; mud volcanoes with large vertical relief (greater than 200m) are clustered in the southwest part of the basin. Mud volcano development in the South Caspian Basin is generally linked to faults, which in some instances are detached at the basement level. The seismic database allows us to determine the relative timing of mud flows and gives us valuable information about mechanisms of mud volcanism within the South Caspian Basin. The cycles of mud volcano activity coincides with time of high sedimentation rates, regional contraction episode and a major stage for hydrocarbon generation. Mud volcano formation within the South Caspian Basin is primarily controlled by compressional tectonic forces and overpressured sediments. Mud volcano activity may not always be related to the Maykop organic rich shale succession (Late Oligocene-Lower Miocene) but may also occur at shallower stratigraphic zones.

Description:
Two deep seismic reflection profiles from the South Caspian basin provide the first normal-incidence image of possibly the thickest sedimentary basin in the world. Significant features imaged with these seismic data are: (1) a series of high-amplitude folds, developed within a thick (>10 km) Neogene sedimentary section, bounded discordantly below by (2) a gently N-dipping, intermittent reflection at 14-20 km (8.0+s), (3) a prominent deep reflector at 26-28 km depth (12.8-13.0 s) with a gentle northward dip, (4) an underlying layered interval with discernibly lower-frequency reflections down to ~36-40 km (16.0-16.5 s), and (5) a noticeable decrease in reflectivity below ~36-40 km. Based on the downward termination of fault-cored folds and their discordance with subhorizontal underlying reflections, the reflection at 14-20 km is interpreted to be the basal detachment for structures associated with the Absheron Ridge. The bright reflection at ~26-28 km depth is interpreted as the basement/cover contact, and the underlying ~10 km portion of the section is interpreted as crystalline basement. Downward diminution of reflectivity at ~36-40 km is thought to represent the Moho despite the absence of a clearly reflective horizon. These interpretations are consistent with previous velocity models from both seismic refraction and teleseismic studies in the South Caspian region that suggested a minimum sedimentary thickness of 20 km and a crustal thickness of 35-40 km. Both the apparent lack of local structural relief on the basement reflector, and seismic velocities (V"p~6.8 km/s) obtained from earlier studies suggest this crust is not thinned continental material. Although thicker than typical oceanic crust (6-8 km), the apparent ~10 km thickness of the South Caspian crystalline crust is interpreted to be of oceanic affinity for this part of the basin. Active seismicity down to mantle depths (80 km) and gentle deepening of the crust from south to north suggest northward subduction of the South Caspian oceanic lithosphere beneath the continental lithosphere of the Central Caspian basin.

The largely lower Pliocene Productive Series and its regional equivalents contain the major hydrocarbon reservoirs of the South Caspian Basin. Examination of outcrops in the Apsheron region, Azerbaijan, has resulted in re-interpretation of the depositional environments of the Productive Series. The lower part of the Productive Series consists of sandstones and mudstones interpreted as channelised and sheetflood fluvial deposits, intercalated with mudstones that represent short-lived lacustrine transgressions of a regional Caspian lake. The upper Productive Series (Pereriva and younger suites) comprises sandstone-prone intervals, interpreted as deposition during periods of increased fluvial discharge and sediment supply, and mudstone-prone intervals, interpreted as deposition during periods of decreased discharge and therefore coarse-grained sediment starvation. Sand-prone reservoir intervals in the Pereriva and overlying Balakhany suites mainly comprise amalgamated low sinuosity, braided fluvial sheet sandstones. Mudstone-rich intervals form inter- and intra -suite seals, comprising alluvial plain and lacustrine facies. The succession displays an overall fining-up trend, which is controlled by long-term climatic cooling, decreased fluvial discharge and reduced coarse clastic input. The modern Volga/Caspian system is a partial analogue for the lower Productive Series in the Apsheron region, where fluvial and lacustrine conditions alternate on a low-gradient ramp, without evidence for a shelf-break. Lake Eyre, Australia, may be a modern analogue for the upper Productive Series, where there are fewer lacustrine influences discernible in the sedimentology and the overall setting resembles a dryland river/terminal fan.

This is a wonderful heartwarming book that I found hard to put down. The story of Dave's dog is especially funny and sad. I wouldn't want to give away any plot secrets but the dog sounds pretty sharp. You will feel like you've been transported to Texas and invited to be part of a special family when you read this book. I hope there is a sequel.

Fan of Dave Lieber Celebrates His First Book of Stories.......2003-10-06

As a longtime reader of Fort Worth Star-Telegram columnist Dave Lieber's work, I was privileged to purchase an advance copy of his book off his new Internet web site before the actual publication date. It's thrilling to see his best stories from the past decade collected in one attractive volume. Dave writes laughers that remind me of Dave Barry at his best. He also writes stories about people that, well, you better darn well have a box of Kleenex nearby. The one about how Dave brought former Dallas Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith to the classroom of a teacher who was dying of cancer (true story; it was her dying wish) is unbelievable! The book has almost 90 stories, each of them short and easy to read. They cover every conceivable subject -- from family, kids, love, education (Dave calls it 'Texas Edukation'), nutty politicians, quirky Texans, Sept. 11, a writer's life, becoming a cowboy, etc. There are probably about 50 photographs in the 288-page book, too. I guess what I like about this book is that it's full of surprises. You never know what is going to be on the next page. There's a story about Dave's relationship with a convicted murderer and then what happened when the guy got released from prison. It's surprising as heck. There's a story about Dave's first meeting with the Texas governor and the strange comment made by Gov. Perry. But the signature story of the book is about Dave's beloved Psycho Dog. Dave loved the dog, but the dog hated Dave. This opening chapter is a real tear jerker, reminiscient of My Dog Skip. I think it's wonderful that Dave is giving a portion of the proceeds of this book to the Humane Society in honor of his late dog. I promise you'll love this book. I'm already on my second reading. - M.W.
