Book Description
Volumes III and IV of this encyclopaedia provide a novel classification of the monocotyledons, a group encompassing plants of most diverse life-forms such as aquatics, terrestrial and epiphytic herbs, and tall trees. Of the 106 families now recognized 104 are treated in the two volumes, while the economically or horticulturally important grass and orchid families are relegated to two subsequent volumes. The classification followed here is based on recent molecular studies as well as on the vast body of information available on this plant group. The wealth and precision of information, but also the keys for the identification of genera and details on their properties, including distribution and diversification, make this work an important source for both the scholar and the practitioner in the fields of pure and applied plant sciences..

Excellent for people on a budget (like me !).......1998-07-20
Lonely planet has almost become the Bible for budget travellers. This book contiunes the trend - most people in the youth hostels I stayed at in Sacandinavia had a copy ! As ususal, the book provides good information on places to stay and eat as well as suggested sights. If anything, the book is a little light on detail in some areas. This is basically because it trys to cover such a large area. Therefore, travellers are advised to use this book as a guide only. It does not compensate for making your own enquies and going 'off the beaten track'. As usual, the book is well organised and reference making access to information quick and efficient. This is certainly thes best guide for Scandinavia I found and a must for independent travellers. Enjoy your trip ...

Customer Reviews:
Just what I needed.......2007-07-24
This is exactly what I needed before I leave for Europe for the semester. Great book. Excellent quality.
Touring Europe? Great Guide!.......2007-03-01
My husband and I went on a tour of Europe, so most of the work was done for us. This book was a great supplement and had great tips for things to avoid on the tour. It was a quick reference and narrowed down sites to see, so we could make the most of the little time we had in each country. It doesn't seem like it would be enough, though, as your sole guide on Europe, if you're not on a tour.
Title covers it all.......2004-09-04
Europe for Dummies is a perfect book for a first or second time traveler to Europe. In March I went on a trip to four countries in Europe and took three different travel guides with me. Europe for Dummies was used much more than the other two that I had brought, and with justified reasons. A previous reviewer said it was too vague, and although I agree with them in some aspects, Europe for Dummies saved us more time and even money in some cases than I ever expected any of the books to. The descriptions are short and full of information, which is what I want when I am traveling. Detailed maps and directions also hellp make Europe for Dummies a great travel guide. Whether or not you would be buying this book to take with you, or to read it before you go on a trip to Europe, Europe for Dummies is a great source of information to prepare and inform you for the many awesome and surreal sights Europe has to offer. Definitely recomended.
Not the Greatest Travel Guide.......2003-03-01
I tried out this book and found it to be very vague. It tells some of the different types of travel but doesn't give you any specifics. It honestly isn't much help if you are actually planning to go to europe. It also mentions too few different ways that you can stay such as backpacking and such throughout all the different countries. It gave very little info on anything. Then at the end to take up space they rate and give short descriptions of damn near every restaurant in europe. Just to fill up space since this book was just about useless! If I were you I'd skip over this book and find another one that fits your needs the best.
Europe for Dummies.......2001-01-09
This book was very helpful when studying up on Europe. The manner in which it is writing is very entertaining and easy to understand.

Customer Reviews:
Only a Dummy would buy this book and Frommers.......2007-01-27
I love to thoroughly research and plan vacations, gleaning recommendations and experiences from as many independent sources as possible. Therefore, I ordered BOTH Frommer's Bahamas 2007 and Bahamas for Dummies to get two different opinions. Bahamas for Dummies repeats Frommer's hotel and restaurant recommendations WORD-FOR-WORD. The Dummies who wrote this book obviously did NO independent research of their own. In fact in turns out Wiley published both books. The only redeeming feature is the cute little post-it flags, that I can stick inside my Frommers guide book!
Excellent guide,but w/ a few (inconsequential) inaccuracies.......2004-03-03
I thought this was a great effort to present the true Bahamas, but unfortunately, there are some inaccuracies that seem to confuse The Bahamas with other countries in the West Indies, particularly in referring to the language. Bahamians would never refer to their dialect as patois. (that's Jamaica and other countries). Bahamians just call their English dialect "Bahamian dialect". And some of the words are not in general use as stated, e.g. nyam is Jamaican, and bobo, if used, more usually refers to Rastas, not morons.

Customer Reviews:
I've had better .......2007-03-26
the book was informative but it left out several interesting islands. the book only covered 11 islands & i know there is more than that. for a first time visitor to the caribbean you need information on all the islands so you can choose which one is best for YOU!!! As i said okay book but fodors or frommers is a much better choice.
What about the other 90% of the Caribbean?.......2004-04-16
Oh dear, oh dear. This is the Caribbean from a Dummy. There is far more to it than this horribly limited selection of islands.
Aruba is in, but not Bonaire or Curacao. Nor St Maarten to round off the Netherlands and Dutch Antilles, plus its French half St Martin.
Grand Cayman yes - Cayman Brac and Little Cayman? These beauties are a short hop away for the discerning traveler.
Jamaica is in, but not Cuba.
Puerto Rico is there but not the Dominican Republic or the Spanish Virgin Islands. In better times Haiti can be an attractive destination.
BVI and USVI are there. No sign of Anguilla.
Further down the great chain of the East Caribbean islands all we see is Barbados (which is stuck out in the Atlantic anyway and does not count itself as East Caribbean). These islands are almost all popular holiday destinations for land or cruise travelers. St Kitts and Nevis (laid back), Antigua and Barbuda (365 beaches), the French islands Guadeloupe and Martinique (incomparable cooking and rum), Dominica (the only true rain forest in the Caribbean), St Lucia (spectacular), St Vincent and the Grenadines (sailing as good as BVI), Grenada (an under-appreciated gem with beaches every bit as good as Grand Cayman), Trinidad and Tobago (restful Tobago). No to mention a few islands like St Eustatius and Saba in the north, plus volcanic Montserrat for at least for a day trip from Antigua.
Anyone who relied on this book for a true view of the Caribbean really would be a Dummy. There is not one country in here that uses the East Caribbean dollar.
PS I live and work in the Caribbean. I have lived on four islands, visited thirty-six at the last count, and I am still delighted and amazed to find wonders round every corner.
incomplete.......2003-08-01
The review says that the book includes information on St. Lucia and St. Maarten/St. Martin. It does not. It totally ignores most of the smaller islands of the Caribbean. I realize that they could not fit an in-depth analysis of all the Caribbean islands into one book, but to totally ignore the vast majority of islands makes this book incomplete and disappointing.
Excellent and Current!.......2001-05-02
This book is great. It has so much information about the caribbean. These Garrett folks are hilarious. They seem to put their heart into this book and I appreciate it. There is a lot of info for couples looking for romantic spots and for families with kids. This rocks!

Book Description
Today, most colleges and universities offer evolutionary study as part of their biology curriculums. Evolution For Dummies will track a class in which evolution is taught and give an objective scientific view of the subject. This balanced guide explores the history and future of evolution, explaining the concepts and science behind it, offering case studies that support it, and comparing evolution with rival theories of creation, such as intelligent design. It also will identify the signs of evolution in the world around us and explain how this theory affects our everyday lives and the future to come.
Greg Krukonis, PhD (Portland, OR) received his doctorate from the University of Arizona Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. He is a former assistant adjunct professor at Lewis and Clark College, where he taught evolution.

Not Dummy Friendly.......2005-01-25
This book stinks. It lacks entire regions of France. For example, it omits the Dordogne, which is a large, economical for the traveler, region of beautiful countryside replete with prehistoric cave art and medieval castles. There are no photographs. Descriptions of lodgings are few and good budget lodgings nearly nonexistent. Despite having such little information, the book is large, thick, and heavy. This is not a book to carry around with you during your travels. I'm not sure who this book is designed for.
Great Book.......2002-05-26
France for Dummies was an excellent read. This book was very in depth without being too confusing. I recommend this book for anyone who is not "the seasoned traveler." I am traveling to France for a month and I will make sure I keep this book with me at all times for reference.
