I haven't finished reading this book because I don't want it to end. Each chapter takes you through the same day as the other chapters, only from the vantage point of a different animal. Most humans don't have a clue as to the life of any other species 24/7. The detail, the nuance, the empathy that Carrigher brings is stunning, without being anthropomorphic. I'm starting a book club based on this book.
Exploring the mystery of existence.......2005-05-03
This is one of my favorite books. Carrighar writes about the lives of nine animals during one day in Sequoia National Park, one chapter per animal. Each animal interacts with the world and fellow creatures in its own way, and each has its own problems and anxieties -- which creates dramatic interest. Carrighar anthropomorphizes her characters, but convincingly and unobtrusively -- how could you avoid it in a book of this type? The writing beautifully describes sounds, scents, the play of light on leaves, etc.

Each chapter is about a day's adventure of one of the animals (Weasel, Sierra Grouse, Chickaree, Black Bear, Lizard, Coyote, Deer Mouse, Stellar Jay & Mule Deer) on the rock and surrounding forests and meadows. Sally Carrighar compresses her observations into one day and weaves a fine tale of the activities and imagined-thoughts of each animal.

A good introduction, with a lot of heart.......2006-04-11
I'm heading to Australia to work on Aboriginal civil rights issues, and picked up this book a few months ago as an intro. While it is certainly no legal treatise, it is a great introduction to an interesting and diverse group of people and their history and struggles to survive European colonization. The reviewer below seems to object to the obvious emotion with which much of the book is written. You should know that, while it is in large part the work of Lonely Planet writers and researchers, they also went straight to the source and have many, many shorter pieces written by Aboriginal people whom they asked to contribute. If you are looking for a dry, detached work of anthropological research, this is not it. If you want an exposure to a variety of topics in the voices of the people about whom they are written, this is a great resource. It is an admirable achievement from Lonely Planet, and a moving testimonial to the world's oldest continuous culture.
Dissapointing and negative. Not worthy of Lonely Planet........2005-02-11
This book is full of bitterness and resentment, it is full of repeating terms such as "and there are still some in goverment who still refuse to utter the word 'sorry'".
The authors (and there are alot of them) should realise what a readers motivation is in picking up this book. Is it to be given a politically weighted, bitter (and actually quite shallow) account of indigenous culture? Or is it to gain a wider appreciation of a subject which in massive and very interesting in a positive way? An example of this books shallowness is p67 and the (brief) section given to aboriginal art, amongst a lot of resentment it mentions that Papunya was the birth of the aboriginal art movement as we know it today and that the some of the Elders of the community where encouraged to paint, no mention of Geoff Bardon who was the driving force behind the movement and who risked great personal hardship to do so.

I have been researching the discrimination faced by the Aboriginal people for several years. Until I found this book, I'd never seen any book that I thought accurately portrayed the situation. The book is excellent. It contains general information about important issues and has very detailed sections for each state/territory. It is a necessity for anyone interested in the Aboriginal history and culture!

Perhaps It's Boring Not Basic US History!!!.......2007-10-03
We did not like this book at all. My daughter who loves history started crying from frustration trying to do this book. I came to help, and I can not stand it. Some of the questions are really obscure and perhaps irrelevant. The really irritating part is that there is no teaching at all. The student is just expected to know everything about history with no lessons. It's like a test book with no resources to draw from. I also noticed a few of the questions had less than accurate answers in the answer key, and some were worded wrong so it made it difficult to get the right answer. Some had more than one correct answer, but didn't allow for that. If you want to learn US History this is NOT the book for you. If you want to drive yourself crazy searching the internet for useless information, this IS the right book for that.

A excellent and readable text for professionals looking for a brief reference on Process Control, who also want to learn to use Matlab, one of the most powerful engineering tools available for Process Control.
Each chapter concludes with problem sets, to which hints or solutions are provided. Despite the reliance on Matlab, theory and analysis of Process Control are well presented.
I have been working for more than 16 years as an Instrumentation, Automation, and Process Safety and Control Engineer for the Oil & Gas Industry, and I found this book to be very useful to learn how to use Matlab to help me solve day to day issues on my job.
Newcomers and students will also find this book useful it their area of interest is Process Control.

This book contains crucial, basic informations in understanding process control. With the Matlab supplement sections, this book will describe the necessary points in the book. Pao Chau, with his great wisdom, creates this book for undergraduate senior courses, or intro for graduate courses.

"Controls" is undoubtedly a very difficult subject for newcomers/beginners but Pao Chau knows well the roadblocks to learning and understanding and bypasses them by getting to the heart of the core, crucial matter without dismissing any vital points. This book is actually a lot easier reading than initially expected, and is presented in such a way as to lead to continual reinforcement of previous material while smoothly progressing to the next topic. It is not verbose and packs a wealth of information in lean, efficient chapters. If you are taking an introductory Process Controls class or simply need a review this is probably the best book out there for you!
