4 out of 5 stars This is a great book........2000-02-14

I highly recommend this title. It has excellent information about some worthwhile but perhaps lesser-known wineries, rather than merely gushing about the best-known producers of Napa and Sonoma like so many winery guidebooks. My only complaint is that better, more comprehensive maps would be appreciated.

      Book Description

By describing the remarkable forces that formed and shaped our ever-changing world, Earth Story gives us a new understanding of the planet and our place within its evolution.

When and how was Earth formed? What is the link between earthquakes, volcanoes, and the creation of continents? How do mountains affect our climate? What triggers ice ages? Earth Story answers these and many other questions as it tells the amazing story of our planet and its constantly changing nature.

Two centuries ago, scientists began to investigate the history of Earth by examining the rocks beneath its surface and began to formulate the astonishing concept of geological time. Using this discovery as their starting point, Simon Lamb and David Sington unravel the fascinating history of Earth from its earliest beginnings to the dawn of human civilization, using full-color illustrations, stunning photography, and the latest scientific thinking.

4 out of 5 stars A Beautiful book: wonderful illustrations, comprehensive treatment of modern geology.......2006-08-11

This is a great volume. It accompanies the BBC TV series of the same name. Unfortunately this wonderful TV series has never been released on DVD. The book is magnificently illustrated and provides the layman with a comprehensive and competent overview of modern geology since the rise of plate tectonics.

I'd recommend reading it in tandem with University of Melbourne geologist Ian Plimer's "Short History of Planet Earth". Plimer's volume deals with some of the more controversial issues, supervolcanoes, global warming etc. Still the best companion for Simon Lamb's book is the TV series. Hopefully one day the BBC will get around to releasing it on DVD.

      5 out of 5 stars Origins Explained.......2000-08-23

As a person who never studied much science, I have always been interested in the origins our world and how it came into being. The theories of earth science were explained thoroughly even to a layman like myself. This book has convinced me to delve even deeper into geology and seek the answers to the creation of my local surroundings. I now wish had chosen my university courses differently when I was younger. Bravo!!

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting and full of information on many subjects........1999-08-09

This book is great if you are looking to explore the origins of the earth, and what makes the earth work. It explains all the steps that made life on earth possible. Each chapter contains thorough information on different subjects from the ice-age to the actuall formation of the solar-system itself. I think this is an awsome book. I understood all of it and I am 15!!! Buy this book!! Its great!!

      5 out of 5 stars First-class!.......1999-07-13

This is a must-have! I'm a geologist myself and although Ihaven't seen the television series on which the book is based (I haveno tv), most of my colleagues were watching and raving about it with great admiration. The book was immediately ordered for the library of our institution.

But don't take my word for it!

On June 2, 1999 David Sington, who is the producer and writer of the series and co-writer of the book, received the Sullivan Award at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston. The Sullivan Award is presented annually by the American Geophysical Union (AGU) for reporting that makes earth science accessible and interesting to the general public. It is named for its first winner, the late Walter Sullivan of The New York Times. Sington was the first broadcaster and first non-American to win the award in its 11 year history.

His name is associated with other great works related to geology and other sciences as well. Both authors know what they're talking about and had co-operated with many scientists on this production. A wide range of geological issues is tackled and they're all tackled admirably.

And I'm not in any way associated with the authors either. I'm just very happy to see earth science treated this way. END

                          Book Description

Rapid molecular identification and typing of micro-organisms is extremely important in efforts to monitor the geographical spread of virulent, epidemic or antibiotic-resistant pathogens. It has become a mainstay of integrated hospital infection control service. In addition, numerous industrial and biotechnological applications require the study of the diversity of organisms. Conventional phenotypic identification and typing methods have long been the mainstay of microbial population and epidemiological studies, but such methods often lack adequate discrimination and their use is normally confined to the group of organisms for which they were originally devised. Molecular fingerprinting methods have flourished in recent years and many of these new methods can be applied to numerous different organisms for a variety of purposes. Standardisation of these methods is vitally important. In addition, the generation of large numbers of complex fingerprint profiles requires that a computer-assisted strategy is used for the formation and analysis of databases. The purpose of this book is to describe the best fingerprinting methods that are currently available and the computer-assisted strategies that can be used for analysis and exchange of data between laboratories.

This book is dedicated to the memory of Jan Ursing (1926 - 2000), Swedish microbiologist, taxonomist and philosopher.

                                      Book Description

Self contained, this book presents a thorough introduction to the complementary notions of physical forces and material (or configurational) forces. All the required elements of continuum mechanics, deformation theory and differential geometry are also covered. This book will be a great help to many, whilst revealing to others a rather new facet of continuum mechanics in general, and elasticity in particular. An organized exposition of continuum mechanics on the material manifold is given which allows for the consideration of material inhomogeneities in their most appropriate framework. In such a frame the nonlinear elasticity of anisotropic inhomogenous materials appears to be a true field theory. Extensions to the cases of electroelasticity and magnetelasticity are then straightforward. In addition, this original approach provides systematic computational means for the evaluation of characteristic parameters which are useful in various branches of applied mechanics and mathematical physics. This is the case for path-independent integrals and energy-release rates in brittle fracture, the influence of electromagnetic fields on fracture criteria (such as in ceramics), the notion of momentum of electromagnetic fields in matter in optics, and the perturbation of solitons propagating in elastic dispersive systems.

                                      Book Description

With Tolstoyan sweep and Dickensian vitality, this epically involving historical novel relates England’s tragic adventure in Afghanistan, which began with the triumphant arrival of the Army of the Indus in 1839 and ended three years later in rout and massacre.

At the center of The Mulberry Empire is Alexander Burnes, a Scots explorer who travels to the unfathomably remote kingdom of Afghanistan and first befriends and then reluctantly betrays its wise and impeccably courteous Amir. But he is only one character in a cast that includes ladies and generals, princes and deserters, all brilliantly and sympathetically realized. At once stirring and harrowing, exotic and cautionary, and as vividly colored as a Persian miniature, the result is a tour de force of re-creation and invention.

An astonishing achievement; this is filled with vivid detail, brilliantly realized characters, and a quiet, but unmistakably ominous message for our own miscalculated foreign enterprises. A wonderful novel on many levels!

Mulberry Empire is a fictionalized tale with an array of true historical characters. The novel is for the most part following the events that lead to the first Anglo-Afghan war, but includes many sub-plots and characters related to the main players in London, Petersburg, or Kabul. Thus the story in each chapter could to some extent stand alone on its own. What is truly interesting is that most of the characters are real people and Hensher has given them a new life, sometimes exaggerating and fabricating a life for them. The interesting Charles Masson's character for example, is depicted rightly as an army deserter and amateur archeologist, but in fact he did not murder a fellow soldier, and was not a homosexual (Philip Hensher confesses to this in his afterwords, and apologizes from any descendants of Masson.) Some true events are altered slightly, and some fascinating pieces are astonishingly true, for example the British officer who had a vision of a funeral procession before the Indus army pushed over to Afghanistan. All in all, though somewhat non-focused, this is an interesting work of fiction and very well written.

The Mulberry Empire is one of the more interesting fiction novels I have read recently. I enjoyed the rather languid style and the vauely Dickensian method of description that creates a vivid world for the story to exist within. However, having set the novel up nicely Hensher fails to execute the story in anything approaching a satisfactory style, the storytelling and prose(for my mind) become too detatched, even more so than in the more wandering parts of the book.
However, during the building stage of the book hensher uses some interesting ideas, the vast numbers of complex but ultimately fairly transitory characters and the succession of small apparently unimportant events, with no consequences for the story gave a good feeling for the total lack of importance of any one creature within the Great Game and I felt the rather sad tone was quite condemning of this. Perhaps Hensher uses this as a metaphor for the whole of life, to be honest I really don't know, but it's woth pondering.
For those looking for excitement I wouldn't necessarily recommend this, but for those looking to wallow in a meandering and thoughtful book this is a worthwhile read and I hope you enjoy it.

An evocative novel of the British Raj, and the disastrous First Afghan War. By using actual participants of the period the author makes the story compelling and factual. The author's description of life in Kabul in the early ninetheen century is most believable.
