      Book Description

The third edition of this best-selling volume provides an overview of current knowledge of the wide variety of mechanisms used by bacterial pathogens in establishing infection, producing disease, and persisting in the host.

Internationally recognized authorities in the field review bacterial invasion, colonization, and survival; bacterial evasion of host defense mechanisms; bacterial effects on host cell function; and identification, regulation, and transfer of virulence genes. The final chapter presents an interesting examination of new methods for studying virulence mechanisms in the complex in vivo environment, a major development in studies of bacterial pathogenicity. The overall emphasis is on understanding the mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions rather than on focusing on specific research approaches.

FOOTPRINTS OF FAMOUS AMERICANS IN PARIS BY JOHN JOSEPH CONWAY, M. A. WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY MRS. JOHN LANE AND 32 ILLUSTRATIONS UN ON JOHN LANK TUB HODLET HEAD NEW YORK JOHN LANE COMPANY MCMXO . r. i -m TO MY MFIM, ONC PRIKND COLONEL HENRY WATTERSON DBAN OF AMERICAN JOURNALISTS NOBUKST SONT OF THE XWITKD NORTH AND SOUTH TH ROOK K AFKKCT10N ATK1Y UKDICATKI INTRODUCTION THERE was a very distinguished American wit whose contribution to the sum of his nations achievement consisted in one sentence which has become historical. Good Americans, said Tom Appleton, Cf when they die go to Paris Tom Appleton so called among his intimates was the Sydney Smith of the Boston society of his day, a big, round-shouldered man with heavy, sombre eyes behind which his audacious humour lay in ambush and enlivened the transcendental seriousness of the Huston of that time. Being only an amateur humorist, he nearly achieved the signal honour of being forgotten m the immortality of liis epigram, and it is due to the genial Autocrat of the Breakfast Table that the name of the man who made a complete character study of his countrymen in eight words lias not been forgotten For, indeed, the end and aim of most Americans for more than a century, whether they could afford it or not, was to go to Paris Of course, in postponing the time of their visit Tom Appleton exaggerated, as, indeed, all wits do Still, it was only to point the national aspiration more trenchantly For it is not too much to say that in those dayn the stay-at-home Americans were homesick for a sight of the city they had never seen xi xii FAMOUS AMERICANS IN PARIS Fm going to Paris was the exultant boast. Never to London For London was a duty, but Paris was a joy. Paris lured them by its traditions of friendship, by the promise of a life of which hitherto they had had no conception, and by the lavish generosity with which it shared its treasures of science, art and beauty with all strangers within its gates. So, undaunted by an unknown tongue, by racial and religious differ ences, and by a totally different outlook on life, they succumbed to the spell under which the most rigid of New England Puritans discovered, possibly for the first time, the foic tic viwc. Strict ladies, from the most godly of New England country towns, became so disloyal to their ice-water principles ts to drink claret, excusing this awful backsliding by the mercifully impure condition of the water, whiU many a blameless Presbyterian wan so falsa to hi tipln inking as to go to a theatre on a Sunday when, had he bam at home, he wottld have gone to mcetiji. Such was the lure of Paris. Besides, the language, which most of them did not understand, has always, like charity, tuvemJ a multitude of indiscretions. While Paris overflowed with indescribable charm, the dreariness of London of those days, on the other hand, was only the ordinary characteristic of most American towns, exaggerated in the case of London because of its unwieldy ise. Indeed, for many decades the American, sensitive to fogs and cold shoulders, fled from London to Parts, unaware that under the national frost was hidden ashy, friendly soul struggling with an historic inability to be INTRODUCTION xiii anything hut frigid. But that has long since changed, for between the sixties and seventies of the last century America discovered what was nearly as important as the discovery of America by Columbus, and that was London. And it is but doing justice to the genius whose centenary the world celebrates now, to acknowledge that it is entirely due to Charles Dickens that this amazing discovery was ever made. For from that time on the Amciican went on pilgrimages to London, not so much to study the London of history as the London of Charles Dickens, who had touched its dull streets with the glamour of his genius and filled thorn with life. From that time hey came to England to see. the places in which the creatures of his fancy had lived...

                    Book Description

Simple and satisfying answers to questions young children love to ask -- and it's a picture book too!

                    Why is the sky blue?
                    Why is soap so slippery?
                    Why do stars twinkle?
                    Why does my stomach g-r-r-owl?
                    Why do cows moo?

These are just some of the charming questions that are answered in this generous and richly dynamic collection of the six books from the Question and Answer storybook series. Everyday childhood activities, such as an excursion to the park, splashing in the bathtub, or fixing a snack in the kitchen, prompt so many questions for young children. Why? provides easily understood explanations for dozens of these everyday mysteries.

A delightfully buoyant storybook approach takes young readers inside the kitchen and out to the park; from the farm to the supermarket; and from bathtime to bedtime. Along the way, the simple question and answer format reveals much valuable and fascinating information about science, nature and the world around us.

Bright, playful illustrations are the perfect complement, telling the story behind common questions that curious kids ask-and explaining the answers that parents and teachers want to know. Perfect for reading aloud at bedtime or for use in a classroom setting, Why? combines the best qualities of educative nonfiction and joyous storybook to delight young readers.

                    4 out of 5 stars pleased.......2007-03-08

I would have given 5 stars but it isn't what we expected,we thought it would be more like a textbook. However, our daughter just turned six and is learning to read- she really likes to read the questions so daddy can answer it- for this reason we appreciate the time together and she learns how to read in question format. I was a little surprised at how infomative it is while easy enough for our four year old son to comprehend. (he sits and listens too). We love the book and would buy again.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, except not as complete (big)as I would have liked.......2001-11-21

My 3 year old has already asked me many questions in this book,
so it hits the mark on being full of real questions that a real child would ask. The explanantions are short (about 1 paragraph)
and easy to understand - although I found the vocabulary sometimes a bit tough for my 3 year old. I often used simpler words while reading to her. I expect therefore that the rated age range beginning with 4 years is probably accurate from the point of view of understanding the explanations completely. The questions are arranged in groups such as "bathtime questions" and in a "story" order revolving around a child in that particular situation (ie. the child is getting a bath and is asking questions that start with "how does hot and cold water run out of the same tap" and ending with "why do my hands get all wrinkly after I've been in the bath a long time"). Each question and it's associated exaplanation and illustration cover a full two-page spread of the book. My only complaint is that the book does not actually contain as much detailed "science" content as I had hoped to find - since it is based on questions that children ask, not on concepts someone wanted to include purely for the sake of completeness. I would guess that 8 year olds might be left wanting more information that is given in the answers (which could be considered a good thing, spurning them on to further research). Certainly for the younger ages though, this is a great book. (More questions from the book: "Do the doors at the grocery store open by magic?" "Why do stars Twinkle?" "Why does it smell so good outside after it rains?" "Why do I have to use the toilet and where does it go when I flush?")

                      Book Description

A thorough understanding of the form, function, and design of animals is essential to any working biologist's knowledge. In the author's view, however, this fast-growing field of study can be made much more exciting and accessible with a hands-on, practical approach. This view is the basis for A Practical Guide to Vertebrate Mechanics. This text can be considered an engineering book for biologists. The emphasis is on vertebrates, and each topic begins with a discussion of the underlying principles, followed immediately by practical experiments and laboratory exercises. The author begins with a refresher on scaling and measurement. This is followed by three chapters on the mechanical properties of materials--investigating elasticity, the strength of materials, and how things break. This leads the discussion to animal materials--bones, joints, muscles--which serve to illustrate principles of structure and load, lubrication, physiology, metabolism, and stamina. Finally, the systems are put in motion, as we discuss terrestrial locomotion, flight, and swimming. What sets this book apart from others on functional anatomy is the emphasis on practical work. Many of the experiments are simple to conduct. Detailed instructions for setting up the experiments are given in an appendix, and sample results are included to guide the student. A Practical Guide to Vertebrate Mechanics will form an important part of undergraduate and beginning graduate courses for zoology, anatomy, biomechanics, and paleontology students. Chris McGowan is Professor in the Department of Zoology at the University of Toronto and Curator in the Department of Palaeobiology at the Royal Ontario Museum. Book Description

Professor Bennett's work explores the potential for inverse theory, emphasizing possibilities rather than expedient or rudimentary applications. In addition to interpolating the data and adding realism to the model solutions, the methods can yield estimates for unobserved flow variables, forcing fields, and model parameters. Inverse formulations can resolve ill-posed modeling problems, lead to design criteria for oceanic observing systems, and enable the testing of models as scientific hypothesis. Ocean models considered range from linear, finite-dimensional systems of equality and inequality constraints, to nonlinear, regional primitive-equation models. Examples from the recent oceanographic literature are analyzed, and several outstanding research problems are surveyed. The methods employ solution techniques including Kalman filters and smoothers, representer expansions and descent algorithms. Exercises of varying difficulty rehearse technical skills and supplement the central theoretical development.

Eliza Lucas Pinckney was a young woman who managed a plantation. In her day, this was unheard of! She had a head for business and agriculture. Eliza experimented with crops that brought wealth to the colonies, despite failure due to weather, insects and the jealousy of a sneaky dye maker who destroyed her crop because he didn't like working for a girl!

From seed to harvest to finished product, A Day In the Life of a Colonial Indigo Planter tells the story of indigo and the fascinating story of Eliza Lucas Pinckney, who earned a place in American history.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide Book.......2003-01-03

This book is fantastic! I live in Columbia and can tour any county and return home in the same day. This book reveals all kinds of wonderful, historical sites which are not only interesting to me, but also to my children. We even found new places to visit in our own county!

5 out of 5 stars The Key to Having Fun.......2001-03-24

Caroline and Sidney have done a real piece of research in preparing this wonderful book. I know many of the places mentioned and can vouch for their accuracy. They seem to have a real feel for old South Carolina architecture. With this book you can go anywhere in South Carolina and have an interesting day or two by just using it as your guide. What a wonderful gift for a friend that's visiting from out of state.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and attractive.......1999-11-25

Todd and Wait provide a competent, comprehensive, and attractive guide to each of the state's 46 counties. They cover the historical sights of each county in a systematic fashion, with knowledgeable commentary on architecture. Their photographs, all in color, are very good. The greatest shortcoming is the county maps, which are passable, but difficult to use without the supplementary aid of a detailed, county road guidebook. The description of natural sights, as opposed to buildings, is a little lacking.
