Customer Reviews:
This book taught me algebra.......2007-06-06
This book taught me algebra in four weeks, during the summer after I finished the fifth grade. I still remember parts of it to this day, 35 years later. I checked out the book at the public library, took it home to read it. It was due two weeks later. I went back to the library to re-check it for another two weeks. By the time it was due again, I had learned algebra all the way up to solving the quadratic equation.
The book reads more like a story than a textbook. I didn't work any homework. I didn't memorize anything. Mr. Asimov simply told me the story of how algebra developed and what real life problems it solved.
In fairness, I have to admit that I was a nerd in school. Not many fifth graders want to learn algebra for the fun of it. Nonetheless, "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear." If the reader is ready and willing to learn, The Realm of Algebra will do the teaching.
Best of Its Kind.......2001-11-08
Realm of Algebra by Isaac Asimov is a short introduction to the basics of algebra. It's only about 150 pages, outlining concepts, running through examples and pulling together things you've already learned in arithmetic. The beginning of the book demystifies algebra, then Asimov goes on to show you how to work out all the a's, b's, x's and y's. This is not a textbook and it's not a workbook; it is a basic introduction to the subject. Asimov is a great writer and he actually uses English sentences to explain the formulas.
If you are taking algebra for the first time or brushing up some rusty math skills, this is a great book to have. You'll definitely come away having learned a thing or two. If you are a publisher, please resurrect this book. It deserves to be in print. (There are used copies out there for (dollar amount), but an alternative book is Algebra Unplugged by Ken Amdahl. That one is more basic, but still very good.)
Incredibly clear and lucid.......2000-06-29
Concur with all previous reviewers; why wasn't this required reading when I learned (or was supposed to have learned!) algebra in school! Outstanding little book possessing far more wisdom and information than its small (paperback) size would seem to indicate. A real collectors piece!
Wonderful book!.......1999-06-27
I'm not a math whiz by any stretch of the imagination, and had a fear of math when I was 12. But I picked up this book by Asimov, and learned algebra on my own that summer! It was so easy to understand, and the concepts were so clearly delineated. I'm looking for this book for my 12 year old son, and am sad that it's out of print. I know he'd love it and learn as quickly as I did. I wish they'd reprint this book, ASAP. I can't even find it in our local library. The card catalog says it's lost--yeah, right. I'm sure someone decided to keep the book because it's so good, dang it.
Dang Good!.......1998-12-13
I remember reading this long ago when I was around 4th grade, in my school's library. I can't remember if I understood much of it, but it was obvious that this book was extremely good. Should've been our textbook, of course, but we all know teachers can't read. Too busy teaching us useful things like base 7. Sad, that it's currently out of print.

Book Description
Environmental chemistry is an amazingly broad scientific area, using chemistry to understand the interactions among environmental systems. It may involve a study of Freon reactions in the stratosphere or an analysis of toxic Kepone deposits in ocean sediments. Other areas include the chemistry and biochemistry of volatile and soluble organometallic compounds and anaerobic bacteria. Environmental chemistry is the study of the sources, reactions, transport, effects, and fates of chemical species in water, soil, and air environments. While these topics may seem highly technical and beyond the concern of the average person, this area of science is of special interest today as the world seeks to combat pollution and live in ecological harmony with the natural environment. For example, environmental chemical research applies to issues such as acid rain and industrial wastes. Environmental issues are also a hot political and social topic, but one must be aware of the science underlying the topics.
This book contains a thorough and carefully prepared bibliography of environmental chemistry books and literature. In order to further research this most important and fast-evolving subject, this book serves as an invaluable tool and reference resource. Along with the bibliography, the book provides access to the information through author, title, and subject indexes.

Book Description
This edited book contains selected papers presented at the Louisiana Conference on Mathematical Control Theory (MCT'03), which brought together over 35 prominent world experts in mathematical control theory and its applications. The book forms a well-integrated exploration of those areas of mathematical control theory in which nonsmooth analysis is having a major impact. These include necessary and sufficient conditions in optimal control, Lyapunov characterizations of stability, input-to-state stability, the construction of feedback mechanisms, viscosity solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations, invariance, approximation theory, impulsive systems, computational issues for nonlinear systems, and other topics of interest to mathematicians and control engineers. The book has a strong interdisciplinary component and was designed to facilitate the interaction between leading mathematical experts in nonsmooth analysis and engineers who are increasingly using nonsmooth analytic tools.

Book Description
In 1897, the British redcoats are universally regarded as the finest fighting force in the world. Among them is Lieutenant Simon Fonthill, dispatched to South Africa with much to prove—for Colonel Covington, his former Commanding Officer, has slanderously branded him a coward. In the Cape, tension is high. The Zulus threaten the colonial government’s vision of a united South Africa, and Simon has been chosen to travel deep into Zululand to discover the intentions of the king. Simon encounters violence and imprisonment before he is faced with his greatest challenge. Escaping from the massacre at the Battle of Isandlwana, he must warn the tiny garrison at Rorke’s Drift of the threat posed by advancing Zulu impis. He has a chance to prove Covington a liar, but he may pay the ultimate price.
Customer Reviews:
Another Bernard Cornwell? I think so, but .......2007-09-03
he's not copying either Cornwell's style or characters. Wilcox is definitely his own man and his hero is no Sharpe. Simon Fonthill, while capable of handling himself in combat every bit as efficiently as Sharpe, doesn't like the army and seems to be trying his best to stay out of it. Despite all his efforts however, he cannot eliminate the armed forces from his life and becomes involved mainly in political and military intrigue - gathering information for the troops rather than standing by their side and commanding them in battle, although he sometimes finds himself doing this.
I'm reluctant to go into detail regarding the plot because I think it's important that the readers discover for themselves how the story-line unfolds; I know I'd be disappointed if a reviewer revealed too much in a synposis. Suffice to say it's every bit as exciting as anything Cornwell ever wrote, the characters are as well-developed, the story action-packed, and the conflicts exhilarating.
One of the nicest things about it is that there are 3 sequels, each capable of standing on its own and each equally stimulating. If you enjoyed Forester, Cornwell, Reeman, etc., you can't fail to appreciate Wilcox.
A very poor copy of Fraser and Cornwall.......2007-05-16
Cornwall is a copy of Fraser and this is a (poor) copy of Cornwall. While Cornwall's earlier Sharpe novels were quite a good read, his later ones showed a marked deterioration in plot, characterization and just generally poor(er) writing. However, any of them are preferable to "The Horns of the Buffalo." To put it bluntly, Wilcox sounds like a modern day Englishman trying to sound like his great-grandfather, and not suceeding.
The plot is paper-thin (no pun intended), the character development pathetic and, as another reviewer has pointed out, the deux-et-machina "solution" at the end is the characteristic hall-mark of bad writers. Why two stars and not one? Because one-star is for the truly abysmal writing such as Flint's 1632 series. While Wilcox is bad, Flint is even worse.
If you haven't already discovered the Flashman series, do so and find out how historical ripping-yarns should be written.
A Poor Copy of Cornwall and Fraser........2007-04-24
Wilcox is not Bernard Cornwall. He is not George MacDonald Fraser.
Fonthill is not Sharp. He is not Flashman.
The biggest issue here is that Wilcox has not done the depth of research--reading the voluminous diaries, etc.--that are available for this historical period to make it live and breathe in a novel. The plot had no surprises. I found the characters to be shallow, as well, without the military minutia--which doesn't need to overwhelm the story, just to be there. For example, there's an incident where his wearing the wrong uniform is perceived as being grounds for charges of desertion. What? Why? A sentence or two could have clarified the point. And, of course, the deus ex machina ending doesn't help either.
Incidentally, the battle of Isandhwala and Rourke's Drift is very significant to the history of South Africa. It would have been well had Wilcox placed his character in a position where he would learn why the British chose to attack the Zulu--other than presenting it as a simple land grab--rather than locking his character up in a Zulu 'prison' for the crucial three or four weeks prior to the battles. See Fraser's 'Flashman at the Charge' for one way that this issue could have been tackled.
Save your money and time for the real thing.
Oops.......2006-10-25
may I point out that the battle at Isandhlwana was in Jan. 1879, not 1897 as it says in your review.
The Horns of the Buffalo.......2006-09-24
This is a five star read from cover to cover. Great book!

Book Description
What has the western of literature and film contributed to American culture? Richard Etulain, the leading cultural historian of the West, answers that question by tracing four distinct storytelling traditions and exploring the indelible images each has left in the public's mind over the past 125 years. Our images of cowboys, lawmen, outlaws, and Indians come from a collage of sources, including Buffalo Bill, Frederick Jackson Turner, Calamity Jane, Mary Hallock Foote, Geronimo, Mourning Dove, Owen Wister, Zane Grey, Walter Noble Burns, John Ford, Louis L'Amour, Wallace Stegner, Patricia Nelson Limerick, Leslie Marmon Silko, and Larry McMurtry.
Etulain begins with the dominant image conveyed in Wild West shows and dime novels of the late nineteenth centurythe West as a place of adventure and danger. In the early twentieth century stories by women and Indians appeared, but they were soon overlooked and not rediscovered until the 1970s. The period from the 1920s to the 1950s represents the classic era of western movies and novelsof cavalry charges to save the day and heroes in white hats. But since the 1960s a counter story has emerged, one of ambiguity and complexity that often turned upside down our notions about what really mattered in how we look at the West.
Etulain carefully explores why stories of the frontier and American West still rival those of the American Civil War as the country's most popular tales, and he shows how narratives that persisted relatively unchanged for a century have moved in notable new directions since the 1960s.
Narrates the evolution of the western story from the Civil War to the present, focusing on books, movies, and people.

Fantastic book packed with all kinds of information!!.......2007-06-08
Unlike a lot of books on Native American symbolism and meanings, this one makes sense! It is an alphabetical guide to the most common animals and what an encounter can meant to you in your life. It differentiates between a good encounter and a bad, and what the different meaning could be. And you can't beat the price!!
