Customer Reviews:
Great for the novice.......2000-05-10
This is a great book for the novice botanist. As a person who just recently started trying to identify wildflowers in the Monterey area, I found this book a great guide. I already have a couple of other books, including the ones from the Audubon Society and from the California Native Plant Society, but this one is so simple and covers most of the flowers you commonly see. It's easy to flip through, the pictures are clear and in color, and it certainly doesn't overwhelm you with technical jargon. I was only sorry it doesn't include some of the smaller/tinier flowers I see around. Maybe in the next edition. A great gift!

Gives you all you need to identify 332 flowers and flowering shrubs of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Central and Northern California, and Alaska. Botanical information—color, size, shape and condition of significant structures, habitat, blooming period—and general commentary (Indian uses, name, history, etc.). 182 plates.
Book Description
More than a field guide, Mountain Wildflowers of the Southern Rockies offers cultural and botanical essays that present useful and fascinating facts about seventy-five species of wildflowers, including strategies for survival, plant evolution, origins of common and scientific plant names, family characteristics, and their roles in human history.
The Laramie and Medicine Bow Mountains of southern Wyoming, the principal ranges in Colorado, and the Sangre de Cristo, Jemez, and Sandia Mountains in New Mexico are home to over a thousand species of wildflowers. The striking samples included here were selected not only because they are characteristic of this region, but also because they have interesting stories to tell. Grouped by family and arranged in natural order, each featured profile is accompanied by a color photo and most include a drawing by wildflower artist Walter Graf.
For both visitors and natural history buffs, this book includes seventy-five examples of some of the most common and conspicuous wildflowers in the Rocky Mountains from southern Wyoming to New Mexico.

Customer Reviews:
We have done two France tours from this book.......2006-03-10
There does not seem to be a great selection of France bike touring books. This is one of few, and we found it very useful. We have done two tours with it. As has been said, the maps could be better, but you'll have your Michelin map anyway.
On the surface this one doesn't look great..........2004-07-07
Sure, the maps are next to useless and the writers are far too fixated on campgrounds and not enough on hotels, but the routing they choose is very nice. I also feel they have selected is an excellent melange of cities, towns, villages and spectacular sights. My wife and I did the Languedoc and Rhone Loop tours for a trip two years ago and loved it and are so are using it again for Burgundy/Franche Comte/Alsace trip we are going on in two months.
Ultimately, I see this book as intended as a companion piece to the Michelin maps which are availiable for every region. What the book actually offers is a turn by turn narrative by which one would physically chart out your intended path on the maps using a highlighter pen. From there one would just follow the markered line and the book itself is stowed away in your panniers unless one finds oneself needing specific directions out of a town onto the intended road.
Addnittedly, there are a few books out there that do give you more information, elevations, point to point milages, etc...though all give precious little on accomodations--(Though, I suppose that is what the internet and the Michelin Red Guide is for), however I find this book to be the most personable and well thought out in terms of what a semi-serious tourer would be after, (and besides, the Michelin maps *do* help out here.) For one not-so-small example, the tours in this book actually seem to logically connect to each other so that if you perhaps wanted to ride for 12 days instead of 7 days, no problem. The other books, to me at first glance seem to seriously fall down here. Some of the other books also seek to work *too* hard to take you off the beaten track. Sometimes you want to see the sights. Unlike another reviewers opinion I actually think it OK to have a great time when touring around France!
Ultimately to do a decent tour I don't think that there is any one single book to buy (unfortuantely). I think it is best to buy at least two or three and pick then your desired route from anyone of them. I feel that "France by Bike" should be one of your choices and In my estimation it is one you will come back to despite its lack of slickness.
It would be really great to see the authors come up with an updated second edition. More train info and some weblinks would be one area where they could improve.
Don't waste your money: this book is useless.......2001-10-04
It became fairly clear to me after reading this book that the authors were more interested in having a good time riding than they were in doing the research necessary to produce a guide book that would actually be useful to others. Their attitude can be best summed up by the fashion in which they deal with the issue of getting to and from the tours: they don't. Instead they mention that they heard second hand that you can ride the RER from Charles de Gaulle airport (Paris), but they really don't have any information because they always go in through Brussels! In addition, they mention that you should take the trains everywhere to get to the tours, but they don't bother to fill you in on SNCF's fairly unfriendly bike policy. What else is lacking? The only distance information given is the total for complete day, so unless you follow their route exactly this book is useless for planning. Route choice is poor--they don't put you on the best, least trafficked roads. In the case of the Loire Valley, they completely missed the signed bike routes that are the preferred roads for cyclist to be on (or perhaps the book is just too out of date). Elevation profiles? Forget it. They also don't provide a great deal of information about what kinds of food and lodging are available in the towns--particularly if it isn't where they choose to have you stop for the day. Their attitude is generally "check with the local tourist office to find a hotel." This advice is only helpful if the office happens to be open when you roll into town. If you are looking for a real guidebook (and it would be extremely charitable to put this book in that category) I would suggest that you buy the Lonely Planet Book "Cycling France" by Sally Dillon instead. It has similar good tour suggestions, but provides all of the information that this book completely lacks--information which you must have to sucessfuly tour France by bike.
A must-have for touring cyclists........2001-07-19
For a first-time touring cyclist like myself, this book was a life-saver. On a bike tour in 1996, I used seven of the fourteen routes detailed in this book. The advice was absolutely invaluable. Fabulous recommendations for low-traffic, scenic routes and great advice for places to stay and see. Many recommendations are particularly helpful for budget-minded bike tourers who want to take advantage of low-cost camping options.
ONE DRAWBACK: With an original publication date of 1993, some of the advice in this book is bound to be a bit out-of-date. The bike-friendly French road system, for example, undergoes periodic changes (due to construction, route changes, etc.), so you'll want to check recommended cycling routes against a good Michelin map of the region. I also found that one or two of the recommended campgrounds had gone out of business since the book's original publication, but you can find a current listing of campgrounds through the local tourist office.
Despite these minor drawbacks, this book is still perfect for those considering a bicycle tour of France (which, by the way, is a fabulous country for both experienced and inexperienced bicycle tourers). I hope to return in the near future and explore some of the book's routes I didn't complete on my first trip!
Great Resource!!.......1999-05-27
Just biked the trip from Dijon to Orleans in May 1999; the biking and camping was outstanding and the book gave great detailed directions; we flew our bikes over, which was an adventure, but I highly recommend the book and the trip to anyone who feels up to it!!

Book Description
The book describes the use of smoothing techniques in statistics, including both density estimation and nonparametric regression. Considerable advances in research in this area have been made in recent years. The aim of this text is to describe a variety of ways in which these methods can be applied to practical problems in statistics. The role of smoothing techniques in exploring data graphically is emphasised, but the use of nonparametric curves in drawing conclusions from data, as an extension of more standard parametric models, is also a major focus of the book. Examples are drawn from a wide range of applications. The book is intended for those who seek an introduction to the area, with an emphasis on applications rather than on detailed theory. It is therefore expected that the book will benefit those attending courses at an advanced undergraduate, or postgraduate, level, as well as researchers, both from statistics and from other disciplines, who wish to learn about and apply these techniques in practical data analysis. The text makes extensive reference to S-Plus, as a computing environment in which examples can be explored. S-Plus functions and example scripts are provided to implement many of the techniques described. These parts are, however, clearly separate from the main body of text, and can therefore easily be skipped by readers not interested in S-Plus.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book on kernel smoothing.......2001-05-29
This book is probably my #1 reference for kernel smoothing. It covers enough theory (bias and variance calculations) without getting stuck in mathematical details. Also the code samples are very useful and are carefully interspersed throughout the text. I think this is a great book for the applied statistician who wants to get up and running with kernel smoothing methods.
well written text on smoothing and data analysis.......2000-12-16
This book covers parametric and nonparametric regression, logistic regression, density estimation and smoothing, semiparametric and additive modeling. The underlying approach is to use kernel methods for smoothing and density estimation. They point to bootstrap methods as a way to put confidence bands on the density estimates. SPlus software is used to illustrate the techniques. The exposition is clear and concise and coverage is fairly broad. Interesting topics such as time series, longitudinal data analysis comparing regression curves and exploratory methods are all covered.

Book Description
Inspired by a series of instructive letters written by Austen to a novel-writing niece, Letters to Alice is an epistolary novel in which an important modern writer responds to her niece's complaint that Jane Austen is boring and irrelevant. By turns passionate and ironic, "Aunt Fay" makes Alice think - not only about books and literature, but also life and culture.
Customer Reviews:
as much about literature as Austen, and a great read.......2002-04-08
Written in the form of witty letters to a niece taking an undergraduate English Lit course, this book attempts to bring insight to the work of Jane Austen in particular and to answer those who question the relevance of literature in general. First published in 1984, there is no mention of deconstruction's effect on academic departments, but otherwise the author seems to address most issues pertinent to the reading and writing of fiction, beginning with a wonderful chapter on the lovely metaphoric City of Invention. Elsewhere, Weldon discusses non-literature, Latin, a writer's relatives and friends, feminism, literary truth, critics and invention. Austen is here as well, and the author enlightens with her discussions of Austen's life, times, works, style and death. There are many wonderful passages, and I especially admired the analyses of Austen's work, but I would have liked more of this, and in more detail. At one point the author writes: "[Jane Austen] knows how to end a scene, an episode, a chapter, before beginning the next: when to allow the audience to rest, when to and how to underline a statement, when to mark time with idle paragraphs, allowing what went before to settle, before requiring it to inform what comes next. It is a very modern technique. It requires ... consciousness of audience, and audience reaction." It should be evident from that passage that Weldon is an elegant, insightful and articulate writer, and I would have *loved* to have seen extended examples and analysis of specific Austen passages to illustrate the points made in the preceding excerpt.
Ultimately, I didn't think the niece's subplot worked. Weldon first advises her not to attempt to write a novel, and then advises her to write it, and then advises her about dealing with the publisher when the novel is not only published but very successful. What's Weldon's greater meaning? Why would this undergrad's novel be published and who is reading it? Is it a condemnation or just a device to drive the conceit?
I learned a lot about Jane Austen and about writing, and got some help for the next time someone tells me it's a waste of time to read a novel. Very enjoyable and highly recommended.
A "must read" for sceptics of the value of literature.......2000-09-10
There's a national debate going on in my country concerning the value and relevance of literature in modern society. Students are liberally encouraged by their schools to drop literature from their curriculum in favour of more examination friendly subjects to increase their chances of achieving the maximum aggregate score for their "O" and "A" levels. So, it is not without some irony that I should be reading Fay Weldon's "Letters to Alice On First Reading Jane Austen" as my introduction to this author's works. Well, I was completely blown away by its first chapter/letter entitled "The City of Invention" which alone is worth the price of the book and....says it all. The imagery she uses in distinguishing the different genres in writing as well as the intrinsic or superficial merits of each form of writing is absolutely breathtaking. In it, she hints at why Shakespeare in the "city of invention" is that castle that marks the skyline and a compulsory stop for every tour group making the rounds of the "city". Weldon is eloquent, witty and wickedly funny with her pen. While she never quite hits the high of that first chapter again, she offers some rare and valuable insight into why Austen is read even today. Great literature has the power when read (whether quietly or aloud) to touch the masses by revealing the universality of some home truths or values they espouse. Although Austen fans will be delighted to see their favourite characters come to live in Weldon's world, you don't have to like Jane Austen to enjoy this book. To fellow Singaporeans sceptical about the value of literature in schools, my advice is "read this and you will see how absurd the question really is". No matter if you disagree after reading the book, b'cos you would have had a jolly good time. Great stuff. Truly.
Read This Book.......1999-10-30
I loved this book when it first came out years ago, and it still makes me laugh, as Jane Austin still makes me laugh. Fay Weldon is one of the few writers I know of who has the wit and the irony that we Austin-lovers look for. Letters to Alice is wise and insightful; read it!
Required reading for all who aspire to create........1998-06-12
Borrowed from a friend during my Jane Austen period, this book so delighted and inspired that it is now a dog-eared resident of my nightstand. As a neophyte pro-writer, I often have people ask me how I made the transition from "wanna-be" to "real" writer. This book was an important part of that process.
Not really about Jane Austen, more for Fay Weldon fans.......1998-04-04
I thought someone ought to give fair warning to diehard "Jane Fans" that this book is not so much about Jane Austen as it is about coming of age and the relationship between two different generations. Jane is not its main focus. Borrow it from your local library, if they have it, but I wouldn't recommend buying it.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent tribute to Jane Austen.......2003-01-17
Literature, evolving from author to author, as each author moves forward, using the shades of meaning generated by previous authors, the associations around a word, a phrase growing over time. On first reading jane austen evokes all those associations, and explains these concepts.
The book is in the form of an aunt's letters to her niece, an aunt who has lived an interesting life, and wandered lonely (as a cloud that floats on high o'er vales and hills). Her niece is just starting her eductaion, she likes literature but is not a fan of Jane Austen, not yet. The letters are well-written, fresh and vibrant, and they take us through literature, the life of Jane Austen, the influences of others on her, and her influence on others.
There are many echoes to be found in the story, and the letters, and the writing. There are echoes of Jane Austen, of course, but also writers of other ages, from Homer to Greene.
The title is reminiscent of "On first reading Chapman's Homer" by Keats, and like Keats, we - on first reading Jane Austen - feel "like some watcher of the skies when a new planet swims into his ken". That is the feeling this book tries to evoke in us.
All lovers of literature, and especially of Jane Austen, do discover this moon revolving around the world of Jane Austen.
