5 out of 5 stars Researched, readable and redolent with value.......2004-02-26

Taking up an Alcock book and following his desert jaunts is always a pleasure. His enthusiasm for the lands others call "bleak" invites imitation. Whatever view we hold for deserts must be reconsidered and assessed for validity when we close the final page. He shows us life where we perceive an empty terrain. Brief appearances by birds, insects, coyotes, even water catch his eye and are imparted to us. While the variety of life here is as vast as the landscape, one feature is brought into view repeatedly - the giant cactus saguro. This bizarre plant becomes a lodestone for his travels because its condition signals so much about conditions. "Sonoran Desert Summer" sounds intimidating, but Alcock shows how important this season is to life.

Reflecting the brief jaunts Alcock takes into the Sonoran, the book is a collection of essays. The topics vary from feather structure for body temperature control through insect, bird and plant reproduction to government policies on coyotes. The wealth of detail neither obscures nor is muted by the desert's vastness - an aspect of which we are reminded on nearly every page. Mountains loom on the horizon and monsoon thunderheads build on their crests, but under this Hackberry bush a small butterfly is playing out a timeless strategy for finding a mate. Alcock misses none of it, and you feel pangs of regret that he's there and you're not. Still, he reminds us, human intrusion on desert solitudes are a destructive force. The Hohokum peoples, who inhabited this area for a duration four times longer than Europeans have inhabited the Western Hemisphere, likely irrigated themselves out of existence.

Alcock, true to his role as a teacher, is full of questions. How does the Digger Bee know where to excavate to obtain a mate? Why do phainopeplas, a dark-plumaged, crested bird, nest in solitude in Arizona but in groups in California? Why do "auxiliaries" occur in some bird species? Why does the zebra-tailed lizard wave its tail, an act likely to lure predators? Alcock doesn't whip out the answers to these conundrums, but guides you through a process of examining evidence, talking about other researchers' efforts and provides you with the most likely evolutionary solution. No aspect of a species lacks an evolutionary pathway, he reminds us. We must work it out from our time and place as best we can.

What is the worth of these efforts? Do they have meaning for those of us not granted the prize of desert residence? Alcock's assessment of government policies of "pest" removal can be applied anywhere. Coyotes, despised by ranchers as despoilers of herds and by suburbanites as raiders of garbage cans, find themselves targetted for eradication. Alcock shows the short-sightedness of such policies and how to replace them with more realistic ones. Heed his warning. Humanity can't afford to lose desert life - "writing its own epitaph in the sand" along with his favoured saguro. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]

5 out of 5 stars Reader's review of Sonoran Desert Summer by John Alcock.......2000-03-23

Sonoran Desert Summer is another of John Alcock's easy to read introductions to this desert's more fascinating creatures. The reader not only gets to experience the desert inhabitants' comings and goings during a typical summer in the Sonoran Desert, he or she does it in comfort! As informative as it is entertaining, this book gives the reader valuable insights into the wonderful adaptations of some of the desert's most interesting plants and animals. Written by a biologist who can also write, this book is fun to read, easy to digest, and makes every jaunt into the desert just that much more meaningful. And, the illustrations are charming as well. All in all, a good buy whether you are a tourist or a long-time desert rat.

        5 out of 5 stars Amazingly handy.......2004-05-30

Just returned from a trip to London and was extremely happy with this book. The pop up maps were incredibly handy, the descriptions about what to do and where to go were great for first time visitors like us. Even the compass was handy, and the pen was a nice bonus.

This book is just cool, with its popup maps, and its size was perfect for keeping in my purse (I don't like to haul around a lot of stuff and a normal sized book would have sat in my hotel room, which is not useful when I need it, which is while I'm out!)

The cover is sturdy plastic, the pop up maps are laminated and tough. It was easy to find in my purse by feel, because of the texture of the cover.

My only complaint is that I did also need to carry a full tube map, even though the book has one, as I was traveling around a lot and sometimes went outside the area the book's tube map showed. Also, many of the trains list their routes by the end-of-the-line station, which wasn't within the book's tube-map area, so you'd need a full tube-map for that as well. On the whole, though, very happy with this book!

We spent 6 days in London and this was the only map we used. It was perfect.

          5 out of 5 stars Good Map.......2005-08-14

I spent 10 days in London and this map was a true asset and believe it or not the built in pen came in handy more than one time. With its excellent design and compact size it folds right up and is ready to be carried in a pocketor bag. It should be noted that this is a very general map. It lacks the necessary detial to help you find those nooks and crannys of London, but you will have no problem finding all the main sights.

4 out of 5 stars My #2 book I carried in London out of the 5 I bought.......2005-05-01

This book is a great size and sturdy for use while out on the streets of London. I was there 8 days and used this book second most. My #1 choice was the Knopf Map Guide London. This book, was very good though. It has a mini built-in compass and fold away pen for making notes. The map pages "pop out" and then fold back in. Maps highlight major tourist areas and attractions. Sometimes the map is a little tiny to ready, the Knopf was sometimes easiser to read. This book had 2 map sections: one of all of central London and then a more detailed one of Mayfair/Soho/Westminister areas. There are also a few pages on what to see/do/eat in London but not very detailed. I used a larger travel guide to help me plan out what I'd do while in London. I used this for out on the town to keep me from getting lost. The size of it can't be beat, easily fits in a large pocket or purse or bag.

5 out of 5 stars How to be an inconspicuous tourist.......2004-04-18

This book is great and the tiny size makes it easy to check your map without looking like a lost tourist (even though you are one)! The subway map was unbelievably accurate and the suggestions for things to see and do was very helpful. But again, back to the map (I'm slightly obsessed), it was a great help in navigating the city and had all of the neighborhoods and major sights clearly labeled on it. I'm looking forward to checking out the Compass Map guides for other cities.

            Book Description

The French strategy of seeking to establish a fortified base across the Viet Minh's route to and from Laos provoked an awesome struggle that lasted from November 1953 to May 1954. During this time Dien Bien Phu, surrounded by 2000ft hills and thus difficult to re-supply by air as the French had intended, became the scene of fearful contests between the locally savvy men of General Giap and the hapless French forces who, losing one strongpoint after another, were finally trapped in the Dien Bien Phu garrison.

The French lost the cream of their strategic reserve in the region and, within months, were agreeing to the independence of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. David Stone, a British Army officer of the post-WW2 era, leads the reader through the complex nature of this significant action.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent chronicle of what is probably the most significant battle of the last half of the twentieth century.......2007-01-02

Of all the battles that took place in the last half of the twentieth century, the French defeat at Dien Bien Phu was probably the most significant. Their defeat at the hands of the communist Viet Minh forever destroyed French military power in Southeast Asia and led to the involvement of the United States in the region. Unfortunately for Vietnam, America and the rest of the world, it took three more decades before the true lesson of Dien Bien Phu was learned. In the long run, the Vietnamese led by Ho Chi Minh were going to control all of Vietnam. Foreign military intervention could delay that fact, but never, ever make it impossible.
This book is a history of the circumstances that led to the battle, the incredible mistakes made by the French and the actions of General Giap as he planned and executed his battle plan. At first, the French had a good idea; their plan was to draw the Viet Minh out into a pitched battle between the two armies. On the surface, it was a good strategy. At the time, the French forces had superior firepower and total control of the air. However, the French military leadership completely underestimated the Viet Minh resources and their resolve to win. These were the same mistakes that the American leaders made during their involvement in Vietnam. The French military leadership also overestimated their capability and made a bad choice regarding the location of the battle. Finally, the fortress was sold as impregnable and the battle was labeled as decisive by the French before it ever took place. Therefore, they turned their defeat into one that would be decisive, motivating the Viet Minh to fight that much harder to achieve it.
For while the French defeat in Indochina was inevitable, their loss at Dien Bien Phu was not. As Stone points out, the Viet Minh suffered considerable losses and there were times when it was possible that the French forces could have staved off the defeat. Had they had more M-24 tanks and better logistical support, the French forces could have survived much longer. While the Viet Minh forces would have continued to fight, at times their losses were so great that some units temporarily lost their fighting capability.
One of the best aspects of this book is the explanation of how the Indochina war was presented back in France. The war was so unpopular that it directly led to legislation forbidding conscripts from fighting there and it played a part in the later fall of the French government. Stone also is very meticulous in chronicling the facts regarding the forces arrayed on both sides, including both the strengths and weaknesses. In the end, France could not hold the line in Southeast Asia and it is sad to note that many of the mistakes made by the French were later repeated to a greater extent by the Americans. Which should not be surprising, as both were operating based on the same set of false initial assumptions, namely that their presence could make a difference.

5 out of 5 stars First Book I have Read on Dien Ben Phu.......2006-02-25

This is the first book I have read on this famous battle. The book covers the history of the region prior to the battle and the related events afterwards. Anyone who wants to read about how a battle should not be fought should read this book. The also covers how elite troops of the French army were poorly lead but put up an very couragous defense. I would recommend anyone who is interested in the French Foriegn Legion should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Definitively informed and informative.......2004-07-17

The latest title in Brassey's outstanding "Battles in Focus" series, Dein Bien Phu 1954 focuses upon one of the most significant post-World War II defeats that the French military experienced. An epic conflict between the French and the nationalist forces of the Viet Minh, the conflict began in November 1953 and ended in May 1954 with the collapse and capture of the last garrison outpost held by French forces, setting the stage for their expulsion and directly paving the way for the Americas who intervene in the Vietnamese civil war on the side of the South Vietnamese government. Definitively informed and informative, Dein Bien Phu 1954 is a seminal addition the growing library of 20th Century Military History in general, and the Vietnam conflict in particular.

The conflict in Vietnam continues to attract enormous attention as one of the most divisive and traumatic events of the post-1945 period. For too long the issues have tended to revolve almost exclusively around American culpability, and this book is an attempt, using a wide range of contributors, to explain the wider meaning and effects of the Vietnam conflict. Providing comparative assessments of North and South Vietnam, China, the Soviet Union, Australia and the U.S., as well as looking at the anti-war movement and the origins and international response to the war, these essays will give a greater depth to an understanding of the war.

                              Book Description

Practical Taxidermy - A Manua; of Instruction In Collecting, Preserving, And Setting up Natural History Specimens of All Kinds, With Accitional Instructions In Modelling And Artistic Taxidermy. By Montague Browne, F.S.Z. Many of the earliest sporting books, particularly those dating back to the 1800s, are now extremely scarce and very expensive. Read Country Books are reprinting these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions. These editions are republished using the original text and artwork. This comprehensive manual on early taxidermy was published in London in 1884, and is much sought after by modern taxidermists for its wealth of detail and historical content. The author was curator of the Town Museum, Leicester, and considered to be one of England's foremost taxidermists. He intended this book... "to be an introduction to a delightful art, which must be wooed with patient determination and loving pains until technical skill invests it with beauty." Read Country Books has now re-published "Practical Taxidermy" in its entirety, using the original text, woodcuts and engravings. Its 368 pages are divided into sixteen detailed chapters :- The Rise and Progress of Taxidermy. - Decoying and Trapping Animals. - Necessary Tools. - Preservative Soaps, Powders, etc. - Skinning and Preserving Birds. - Skinning and Preserving Mammals. - Modelling of Animals by Substitution of Clay, Composition, Plaster Casts, or Wax for Loose Stuffing. - Skinning, Preserving, and Mounting Fish. - Skinning, Preserving and Mounting Reptiles. - Dressing and Softening Skins or Fur as Leather. - Relaxing and Cleaning Skins - "Making-Up" from Pieces. - Colouring Bills and Feet of Birds, Bare Skin of Mammals, Fishes, etc. - Making Skeletons of Animals. - Egg Collecting and Preserving. - Cases, Mounts, Shields, Cabinets, Rockwork, Ferns, Grasses, Sea-Weeds etc, for "Fitting-Up." - Artistic Mounting, Modelled Foliage Screens, Lamps, Natural History Jewellery, etc. - Collecting and Preserving Insects. - The Pictorial Arrangement of Museums. Etc. This previously rare book will prove to be a valuable addition to the library of all dedicated taxidermists.

                                  Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well written and illustrated reference book.......1998-08-24

This is a well written and practical library-type reference book covering all types of taxidermy - birds, mammals, fish, trophies, etc. It deals with the history of the craft and several other interesting aspects. It mainly contains plenty of detail of both traditional and more modern taxidermy methods. It has a "dated" feel about it, probably because it was originally written in 1953 but has been well updated in 1979. However this doesn't detract from the author's clear style.

A nice cover wouldn't have harmed any. Not necessarily for the complete beginner (for whom I'd recommend a taxidermy video first) although it is fairly easy to understand.

The Variation Principle In Informational Macrodynamics (VP) introduces the process' integral information measure, which has a distinctive difference from traditional information approaches that use an entropy function. The VP's minimax mathematical mechanisms formalize the regularities of the cooperative informational dynamics, connecting randomness and regularities, stochastic and determinism, reversibility and irreversibility, symmetry and nonsymmetry, stability and instability, regular and chaotic dynamics, thermodynamics and informational dynamics, time-reversible and time-irreversible processes, reveals the information dynamic mechanisms of evolution and development.
The mathematical formalisms and methods, implemented in the forms of computer models, algorithms and programs, provide new general tools for Information Systems' Modeling in such areas as biology, intelligent systems, computer and information technology, including communications, data modeling and data management.
Variation Principle In Informational Macrodynamics, with its examples and applications, will meet the needs of a professional audience composed of researchers and practitioners in industry, as well as graduate-level students in computer science, mathematics and engineering.
                                                        Variation Principle in Informational Macrodynamics.

                                                          Book Description

An appealing collection of the great tragedies of Shakespeare, these fourteen plays express the full force of his dramatic and psychological insight, exploring the fatal flaws that lead to the fall of the mighty from good fortune. The hesitant vengefulness of Hamlet; the vain selfishness of Lear; the irrational jealousy of Othello; the cunning destructiveness of Iago; the romantic impulsiveness of Romeo; the murderous ambition of Lady Macbeth--all of these characters are burned into the collective psyche of world culture.

I appreciated reading all the tragedies together like this. There were some that I had read many times before, but others that I had barely read. The Tragedies are what Shakespeare is most noted for, and with good reason. Each of these plays is a masterpiece in its own right, and each of them provides such a wide variety of quotes that we all have heard over and over. That is the most enduring thing about Shakespeare - his mastery of the English language was so great that his words are still remembered today (almost four centuries since his death). Shakespeare has written thirteen tragedies, and I will do individual reviews of three of my particular favourites. The ones that I will further review are "The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark", "The Tragedy of Macbeth" and "The Tragedy of King Lear". As much as I enjoy each of these the other ten should not be ignored either. Shakespeare could not keep some comedy out of his famous tragedies, and sometimes it is these comedic scenes that we remember the most. Who can forget the drunken porter in "Macbeth"? It is very difficult for me to pick a favourite out of these thirteen masterpieces, but I think if asked I'd have to admit to Macbeth. But read them all, they are well worth the time.

We all know about Shakespeare, so a review of his writing is not required. However, I would like to say that the Everyman's Library series are worth getting. Unlike omnibus editions (such as the Riverside Shakespeare), these are actually portable so you don't need a table to hold them up while you are reading. The Everyman's Library series have good hardbindings, are conveniently sized to carry around, and have illuminating and extensive introductions. The typeface used is old, but the letters are large and easily readable (something that is a concern with some other editions).

Tragedies, Volume 2 contains: Titus Andronicus; Troilus and Cressida; Julius Ceaser; Anthony and Cleopatra; Timon of Athens; Coriolanus
