The Spanish Peaks stand alone some distance from the main cordillera of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, south of Pueblo, Colorado. The towering twin mountains have served as beacons for Native Americans, Spaniards, trappers, traders, travelers on the Santa Fe trail, miners, and homesteaders. Spanish Peaks shares the legends the mountains have inspired and tells of the peoples drawn to the peaks' shelter. Author Conger Beasley Jr. and photographer Barbara Sparks portray the people who struggle to sustain their lives here and document traditional events such as the Ute Bear Dance and Holy Week among the penitentes of Huerfano Church. Beasley's vivid writing and Sparks's photographs offer tribute to a rugged, mysterious place.

Successor to Louis L'Amour?!.......2000-09-05

This is a wonderful book! Jon has truly captured the spirit of this part of Colorado--we live near the Spanish Peaks in the San Luis Valley, and regularly travel the country he writes about. I drive past old Fort Garland every day. The pictures Jon draws with his words are so accurate, they are like a photograph. Our valley really is that beautiful! The characters are so vivid they feel alive, and the plot and the action move right along. My husband originally bought the book and loved it, then I read and loved it. We loaned it to my mom, who is now buying a copy to keep, plus several copies to give as gifts for Christmas. As a western writer, I can see Jon Chandler as the successor to Louis L'Amour--equally exciting and well-researched material. Highly recommended!!!

Fast-paced, intense, enjoyable reading!.......2000-06-02

I was drawn to read Jon Chandler's first book because I had already been totally intrigued by his CD, Westerns. One of the songs on it, 'The Spanish Peaks' was so beautiful and emotional, I just had to read the book by the same name. It didn't disappoint! This book is full of action, and the characters and plot are fully developed. Anyone who likes a western flavor to their literature will enjoy this book. Don't expect it to read like any cheap western novelette, though--this writer has more talent than that!

Chandler's "Spanish Peaks" may be a western novel, but it kept this city slicker thoroughly entertained and turning the pages! It's a wonderful story played out by characters that represent the best of the west and the worst of the west.

I'll pass it along to my friends... but only if they guarantee they'll bring it back!

SPANISH PEAKS is a page-turner.......1999-11-05

Jon Chandler's forthright, flowing style kept me very interested in his novel. His ability to pack his sentences with action adds to the flavor of the book. Vivid descriptions give a clear picture of each character and situation. Vistas are portrayed in this manner as well. Tate seeks revenge for his daughter's death and the manner of her and her family's death, as well as his own sorrow. Jon writes a very effective portrayal of the villainous Garcias, one of whom thinks he is on a religious mission. Amos emerges as the most empathetic character, and one has many opportunities to worry about his welfare. The fact that this book won the 1999 Western Writers of America's Best First Novel Award adds an added inducement to read the novel. I could tell from the cover that SPANISH PEAKS would be wonderful reading, and it was!

John Chandler's breakthrough novel is a compelling and entertaining read that captures the reader from page one and makes the west a enjoyable journey for all. This is a must read!

i am a first year medical student in philadelphia and i have been looking through various microbiology texts. the singleton books is interesting reading and the greatest strength it has exists in its condensed writing. it's short and sweet, but it is about as detailed as a piece of cardboard. good for general bacteriology- even for students who dont know much about biology in general. not a medical text in any way.

Great Resource for Implementing Literature Circles!.......2002-08-20

I have been using various approaches to Literature Circles for about 7 years, and this is one of the best books I've read on the subject. Instead of teaching one specific technique, the authors present a variety of methods for implementing Literature Circles. Many of the strategies were new to me, and all of them were very practical and appear easy to implement. One theme that runs through the book is the need to find out what works in your classroom. The companion book, Literature Circle Resource Guide, is also extremely useful as it provides many time-saving forms and handouts. I can't wait to start using these strategies in my classroom.

Getting Started With Literature Circles.......2001-08-16

I was disappointed in the book. I came away with a few parctical suggestions, but a 5 page essay could have given me the gist. The rest of the book was repetitious and superfcial.Having mentioned something important, for instance, lke evaluating the readability of a book, they then simply referred the reader another book. The authors seemed to spend time every chapter stating that how a teacher uses their information will depend a great deal on the teacher and his/her students. Of course it does. Just say it once. It was almost as if they were hedging their bets. Compare this to a literacy book written by Lucy Caulkins and it really seems elementary.

Very practical!.......2000-05-12

I am new at starting Literature Circles in my classroom, and this book gave me very practical suggestions that I could implement right away. I especially liked the examples given of charts that a teacher could use in his or her classroom. The book gives hints all the way from focus lessons and good books to begin with, to ideas for reading responses. A reader can take this book and go step by step in creating Literature Circles for his or her students. It was one of the most helpful books on this subject that I have read.
