This book gave an accurate account of the tragedy in 1912. Young children who are beginners will have difficulty reading this story. I feel it is geared towards experienced readers in grades 2, 3, and 4 at least. It is a hot commodity in my school! The photos are excellent. I recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars The Story of Booker T. Washington (Cornerstones of Freedom).......2000-04-11

This was an excellent work overviewing the major achievements of Booker T. Washington. Concentrating on his years at Tuskegee Institute, the authors do a good job portraying Washington's beliefs while explaining the political climate at the time. Washington's critics of the time were also acknowledged and their views represented. The book also explains what a great example Tuskegee Institute and Washington's educational ideas were for others establishing similar institutions.

5 out of 5 stars The American Army is transformed one winter at Valley Forge.......2002-02-08

The "Cornerstones of Freedom" series does an excellent job of providing in depth information about historical events for students in upper elementary or junior high school. "Valley Forge" starts with the American Army avoiding barely avoiding being annihilated at the Battle of Brandywine. In the brutal winter of 1777 the colonial army limped into Valley Forge a disorganized and low on supplies and morale. The two things R. Conrad Stein's book focuses on are the severe conditions the troops faced and how they were transformed into a more professional fighting force. Students will learn about not only the leadership shown by commanding general George Washington, but also the efforts by Nathanael Greene to provide better equipment and Baron Friedrich von Steuben to drill the troops in marching and shooting. The improvement was seen the following year at the Battle of Monmouth. This book is filled with paintings and etchings from the 18th and 19th centuries along with contemporary photographs of the National Park. One of the strengths of this book is that Stein often uses quotations from the ordinary soldiers and military leaders of the American army to flesh out the narrative. I found these quite effective in giving young readers a better sense of what things were like at Valley Forge.

4 out of 5 stars A moving tale of adventure, heartbreak and hope - for kids........2001-04-22

I read this book in school as a child (well, I'm only 17 now, not exactly old) and I was permanantly at least 10 pages ahead of the teacher so impatient was I to continue with the story. The novel follows a group of families as they make their way to the promised land, fighting attacks from animals, illness, obstacles in their path, but like all good stories the ending is a happy one. There are bits when the reader will laugh, those when a tear may venture out over his or her cheek, but always will the reader be anxious to see what's on the next page. A great novel, highly recommended.

                      Book Description

An age old mystery, the development of the microscopic embryo into exceedingly complex plants and animals--into roses and cacti, elephants and blue whales, apes and human beings--stands as one of the most fundamental and important questions facing modern biologists. How does one cell give rise
to so many millions of cells? How do they divide so as to form hearts, brains, eyes, and ears? Where in this pin-head-sized object is all this information encoded? Now, in The Triumph of the Embryo, biologist Lewis Wolpert answers these and other questions in a lucid tour of embryology, which offers
the latest theories in this fascinating field.
Filled with rich and unusual examples, metaphors, and descriptions, Wolpert moves beyond his overall narrative to discuss the many issues it raises, such as aging, cancer, regeneration, and evolution. Readers discover why all calico cats are female; encounter a fruit fly engineered to grow a leg
out of its head; and find out why there seems to be a 110 year age barrier for the human body. Clearly written and illustrated with striking examples, The Triumph of the Embryo offers a dazzling look at the marvels of modern biology.

5 out of 5 stars Very good layman's book on embryology .......2005-02-23

This is a short, easily read, and absolutely riveting book. I was overjoyed to find this book at a college library. I've long wanted to learn more about embryology but had found it impossible to find a book written for the layman. I figured this should be an interesting subject for the common reader (like myself), but all I could find were dry cursory descriptions in bio textbooks--which made no attempt to make embryonic life seem relevant or understandable.

Through this book I've found that embryology is absolutely fascinating. Embryos exist through the most biologically astonishing parts of human (or any animal) life. I can't even begin to relate how many interesting things are in this book. To me the whole book is worth the jaw-dropping description of 'gastrulation', a process I had never heard of. When I looked this up in my anatomy and physiology textbook, it was scarcely (and quite uninterestingly) covered. And yet "it's been said that I claim that gastrulation is, far more than birth, marriage, or death, the one important event in your life", Wolpert says, and I'd say he's right on. Other things like fertilization, DNA, implantation, and the development of body structures are readily explained.

This book seems to presume no prior biological or medical knowledge. I have little scientific background and I followed it well. It is not drily written like textbook, but told more like a narrative. I highly recommend it for the average science reader and for the beginning student of biology.

A self-contained account of integro-differential equations of the Barbashin type and partial integral operators. It presents the basic theory of Barbashin equations in spaces of continuous or measurable functions, including existence, uniqueness, stability and perturbation results. The theory and applications of partial integral operators and linear and nonlinear equations is discussed. Topics range from abstract functional-analytic approaches to specific uses in continuum mechanics and engineering.

                                    Book Description

When Rousseau first read his Confessions to a 1770 gathering in Paris, reactions varied from admiration of his candor to doubts about his sanity to outrage. Indeed, Rousseau's intent and approach were revolutionary. As one of the first attempts at autobiography, the Confessions' novelty lay not in just its retelling the facts of Rousseau's life, but in its revelation of his innermost feelings and its frank description of the strengths and failings of his character.

Based on his doctrine of natural goodness, Rousseau intended the Confessions as a testing ground to explore his belief that, as Christopher Kelly writes, "people are to be measured by the depth and nature of their feelings." Re-created here in a meticulously documented new translation based on the definitive Pleiade edition, the work represents Rousseau's attempt to forge connections among his beliefs, his feelings, and his life. More than a "behind-the-scenes look at the private life of a public man," Kelly writes, "the Confessions is at the center of Rousseau's philosophical enterprise."

What can one say about The Confessions? I would recommend this particular edition because of the inlusion of the letters to Malesherbes, which can shed some light on the process Rousseau's writing of The Confessions. We can also see where the text differs from what actually happaned: there are some discrepiences in his re-telling of the same event. There is as well an excellent introductory essay.
