5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview.......2004-06-01

I found this book to be a great overview that saw me through every stage of my Eclectus flock -- from acquisition and housing to breeding. I've appended the summary on the back cover:

Quote

Roger Sweeney has spent several years at various zoological and bird gardens in the U nited Kingdom. In 1989 he became Livestock Manager at "Birdworld", the United Kingdom's largest bird gardens. While at Birdworld success was achieved with a wide diversity of species, including Parrots, Softbills, Pheasants, Ratites, Penguins, Spoonbills, Wading birds and Birds of Prey.

The Eclectus Parrot has been bred at Birdworld consistently over the last 10 years and considerable work has been carried out into its incubation and neo-natal care.

In 1993 Roger became a full time consultant at "Birds International", one of the world's largest breeding and research centers located in the Philippines. This facility houses what is surely the world's largest collection of captive Eclectus Parrots!

While at "Birds International" Roger was also responsible for the management of some of the world's rarest birds including the Spix Macaw, Mount Apo Lorikeet, Sumba Hornbill and Palm Cockatoo.

As of mid 1994 Riger has been retained as a consultant to "Loro Parque".

4 out of 5 stars A good book for aviculturists interested in Eclectus........1999-10-27

If you are looking for a book on keeping Eclectus parrots as pets, you will probably find this book disappointing, although it does contain limited information on the subject. (Unfortunately, no book has been written that includes extensive information on Eclectus as pets.) However if you are interested in the natural history of Eclectus parrots or in breeding Eclectus, this book should be part of your library. The chapter on natural and avicultural history is especially strong and brings some sense to the confusing topic of Eclectus subspecies.

2 out of 5 stars Not a lot of information for the price.......1999-09-19

The book provides some good and useful information about Eclectus Parrots but not enough to justify the price of the book. It is not a big book at all. The book does not go into much detail about things. For example, the author mentions the importance of having the right size and type of perch but never really says what that is specifically. How big around should the perch be? He doesn't say. If money is no big deal then this is a good book to add to your collection of books about Eclectus parrots.

If you are interested in becoming an Eclectus breeder this book might be worth while. Breeding seems to be the main focus of the book.

For dealing with parrot training and parrot problems and such I recommend "Guide to a Well-Behaved Parrot" by Mattie Sue Athan. There are some things I don't agree with in the book like her recommendation not to carry your bird around on your shoulder but there is a lot of good stuff in the book.

1 out of 5 stars Not a good choice.......1999-07-18

I bought this book with the expectations of helping me prepare to train a baby eclectus, and was very disappointed. This book covered more information about the history and the anatomy of this parrot, rather than providing any helpful information for an owner to help understand and deal with the behavior and training of this bird. I have purchased other parrot training books that may not apply specifically to the eclecuts, but it does cover more useful information. The book does have good pictures if that is what you are looking for.

2 out of 5 stars Not a good reference book.......1999-07-15

THis book is more useful for its' pictures than it is for the information on dealing with an electus parrot. It does not go into detail about any of the topics that it should cover. It gives you more information on the history and anatomy of the parrot, than it does on this parrot's behavior. Nor does the book provide any training techniques or answers to behavior problems. I think you would be better off buying a general parrot training and behavior book, than buying this guide to the eclectus.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best book on Ohio trees still.......2006-12-10

This is an amazing wealth of information crammed into a small book, and speaks to the deep knowledge Braun had of Ohio plants and trees. While this is not a 6th grade tree book, with some basic studying of plant systemics it will be much more useful to the average user.

I used this for extensive tree ID and forest monitoring for several years and have nearly worn the lettering of the cover it got so much use. While it's not quite a fit in your back pocket hiking book, it is a definite must for any serious outdoor/forest lover in Ohio and the Appalachians.

2 out of 5 stars Not intended for a novice.......2005-11-19

I was disappointed in the quality of this book compared to other books on the market.
The book is not in color and the layout is very difficult to use. The drawings don't contain the common names of the plants. It is not intended for a novice. If you are not a tree expert, and want to identify tress, I would recommend these tree books instead. "Garden Trees" by Richard Rosenfeld, "Trees of North America" by Roger Phillips, and the Smithsonian Handbook "Trees" by Allen J. Coombes.

5 out of 5 stars An essential reference.......1999-12-07

This book is an essential reference for anyone from Ohio or nearby states with interests in botany, horticulture, or ecology. The descriptions of the plant species and the line drawings are exceptionally clear. The range maps by county are also very useful. As a nurseryman and native plant enthusiast I would suggest this book to anyone with interest in the topic.

5 out of 5 stars Living With Ohio Trees.......2007-06-28

We purchased a 22 acre plot and are building a home. We have this awesome woods with so many trees that I am unfamiliar with so bought a copy of Trees Of Ohio Field Guide. I love the book it has pictures of the trees, explains about each tree, bark texture and color, leaf type and color, size of the tree, where it grows and so much more. It is the most complete and precise guide to tree watching I have ever seen. I feel I can walk through my woods and call the trees by their first names. Great book for a beginner in tree watching!

4 out of 5 stars Good book overall.......2007-01-04

I wanted a book to help me identify the trees on my property as I was never in the Boy Scouts where you learn all that stuff. It was a pretty good read, although I got it for Christmas and there were no leaves on the trees. I was hoping that it would have better pictures of the bark to help in identifying species when no leaves are on. The bark pictures offered are pretty small and non-representative. The leaf pictures, however, are preety good and I'm sure it will be of use during the summer.

5 out of 5 stars Descent field ID and it fits in your back pocket!.......2006-12-10

I have almost broke the entire spine from use, and this is definitely one of the best small pocket field ID guides I've ever had for Ohio flora. While there are definitely problems with it (lack of details, diversity of species) it is one I would recommend any serious outdoor person check out. I always keep it in my hiking pack along with the Woods Plants and Shrubs of SE Ohio and Lucy Braun's Ohio plant book.

Whenever I do timber sale monitoring or nature studies it is a helpful guide and will withstand some pretty heavy use/wear/tear and still work. The glossy images are a real treat (but not enviro friendly :( Compared to crummy line drawings from 1950-70 in a lot of outdoor books, this is a nice change. Also, it is a good non-specialist book for general outdoor enthusiasts. You don't need a PhD in plant ecology or forestry to get useful uinfo fast. It also has an interesting page categorization scheme by tree shape.

4 out of 5 stars Great pictures, could use more.......2006-07-09

A very good pictoral discription of native Ohio trees. Many of the trees have inset pictures of the bark, flowers, and fruit of the trees. Not all of them do - otherwise the book would have rated 5 stars. Arrangement of the entries is by leaf type and size which is very helpful.

4 out of 5 stars useful and informative.......2006-01-09

This book nicely covers the common trees of Ohio- one page on size, habitat, etc- both native species and introduced ones. Some of the photo illustration of the various tree for leaf identifcation are not the best- he tried to take photos of leaves on the tree, which can be hard to make out. Might have been better as an isolated leaf on a plain backgound.

5 out of 5 stars Discover Older Literature.......2007-10-06

If you are looking for something good to read, you might want to try this older American Literature by Conrad Richter, The Trees--what a great story. I have really enjoyed this, and it helped that years ago I had seen the film of The Awakening Land, so it was easy to picture and hear the voice of Elizabeth Montgomery as Sayward.

5 out of 5 stars Lost in Trees.......2007-05-12

I live in North Carolina in the middle of a forest, but I can see neighbors out my window, I can drive easily to the city, and the deers scatter if I clap my hands. But in Conrad Richter's THE TREES, the Luckett family could not even see the sky above their forest across the Ohio River from their former home in Pennsylvania.

Richter makes us feel claustrophobic living the life of the white settlers in Indian land. His characters survive from one hunt for meat till the next, and their low supply of flour prevents the mother, Jary, from enjoying her last days.

The family is kept together by older sister Sayward after a series of tragedies. Sayward has her feet on the ground, and her head in the clouds of a positive attitude. Nothing seems to bother her outwardly, and her strength only increases.

Near the end of the book, Sayward's siblings are grown up and Sayward begins her life over again, still resolutely fighting the "big butts," those huge trees that surround her.

This book is in my top ten of all time.

When I first began reading The Trees, I thought I would have to force myself to sit down and read it, but once I got into it, I could not put it down. The story is captivating and enthralling. For anyone who is interested in the struggles of moving West in the 1800's or who just likes an interesting story, would really enjoy reading The Trees. By the end of the book, I felt like I knew the characters and craved more. Luckily, there are sequels, which I can not wait to read.

    5 out of 5 stars College Composition.......2005-11-28

The Trees is a novel that really brings out the imagination of it's readers. This book is full of action and never has a dull moment. The Luckett family fights the wilderness in order to survive. The focus of the book is on Sayward Luckett, a young woman who goes through many tough situations and grows up throughout the book. A great book that I would definitely recommend to anyone.

          Book Description

In words and images as lushly evocative as the story's setting, Jean Van Leeuwen creates this warm portrait of a pioneer family's struggles with the untamed Ohio wilderness. As they strive to carve a new life, they find that it is the bonds of faith, family, and courage that help sustain them in the tough, exhilarating new land. And as those trees that challenge and shelter them become cabin walls or lofts to sleep in, the thin shafts of sunlight that pierce the forest canopy begin to light a hope in the family as well. Little by little, a place of trees becomes a place that feels like home. The beloved and celebrated author of over thirty books, Jean Van Leeuwen's pioneer stories for Dial include A Fourth of July on the Plains, Going West, and Bound for Oregon. Phil Boatwright makes his picture book debut with Nothing Here But Trees. Jean Van Leeuwen lives in Chappaqua, New York. Phil Boatwright lives in Mesquite, Texas.

Every year I tell my friends that *this* is the year I'm going to Hawaii - and every year they give me another travel book on the 50th state. This year I received Rum & Reggae's Hawaii and I've finally booked my trip. Thanks to Mr. Runge's thorough (and thoroughly entertaining) descriptions, I know exactly where to go, where to stay, and what to avoid. I've been waiting for a travel book to really tell me what's what for years. I can see I'm not the only one who appreciates an opinionated travel book - there are far too many dull ones out there. This book pushed me over the edge to finally go to Hawaii - quite an accomplishment. Buy it for a friend of yours!

5 out of 5 stars If you are going to Hawaii... This book is a Must !.......2002-03-19

Just returned from the Islands of Hawaii (Oahu, Maui, Lanai, and big island) - can't wait to go back and explore the other parts of such a wonderful part of the world. I will say that without my copy of Rum&Reggae's Hawaii travel guide - I would have been lost and probably would have had a much lessor experience. I bought the book well ahead of my departure and used it as the foundation for my trip - setting up an appropriate itinerary, logistics, great places to stay, authentic restaurants, and unique places to see not covered in any other guide books I looked at - The tourist scale rating system was really helpful and accurate - without a doubt this guide book is right on the mark. Not only was the book my best reference while I was traveling, but it also was fun to read about the history and cultural stuff I did not know along the way. As with the Rum&Reggae's Carribean guide book (which I used and would also highly recommend if headed there), I found this book very readable, no-bull, and colorfully different from other stuffy, flat guide books I have tried to use many times in the past. Thank you Rum&Reggae for this book - I will go back with your book in hand! My next trip is to South America - when is your travel Guide on Brazil coming out?

This is not my first encounter with Mr. Runge's work nor, I hope, will it be my last. I started with Rum & Reggae 2000, the definitive "inside scoop" on the caribbean, and I've been hooked on Runge ever since.

This is not your ordinary travel guide. It reads more like a converstation with a friend over cocktails. And what better way to plan your next trip than to chat with a friend who has 'been there and done that'?

This is not my first encounter with Mr. Runge's work nor, I hope, will it be my last. I started with Rum & Reggae 2000, the definitive "inside scoop" on the caribbean, and I've been hooked on Runge ever since.

This is not your ordinary travel guide. It reads more like a converstation with a friend over cocktails. And what better way to plan your next trip than to chat with a friend who has 'been there and done that'?

Be it solitude or 'sauce' that you seek; deserted beaches or a little cha-cha-cha, you'll find it here.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great Tips!.......2002-03-09

I wanted to let anyone looking for what to do/where to stay/what are the best deals in Hawaii -- that you need look no further than this terrific new guide book from Jonathan Runge.

Just as he did in 'Hot on Hawaii', he makes you want to go to places on various islands that you'd not thought of - or even known of before! The research and detail that has gone into this 2nd effort, is first rate and I applaud the time he put into it.

If you have only one guide book on Hawaii that you want to keep on hand, I suggest that you make it this one!

What a frustrating book - it never seems to get to the point!

I can't understand why the authors feel it's okay to write at such a high level about chaos and complexity, without delving into their subject in any depth. For example, they open with the contribution of Alan Turing and his Turing machine but they don't give enough detail for you to appreciate why this is important. Sadly this happens again and again in this book. I was often left thinking, "What is the significance of this?" as they skipped from one idea to the next in a disjointed manner. They tend to introduce an idea or individual contributor, mention too briefly what they did and then move on.

It's a bit like reading lots of road signs on the freeway at speed: you can't really claim you've visited those places or know what they're about.

The title of the book suggests a much stronger link to computing than is actually achieved. They use a few computing terms (which they don't define) and despite using the term 'algorithm' they don't actually explain many of these.

I felt the authors weren't in touch with their audience. It's quite possible to write a fascinating book that deals with a technical subject despite your audience not have a technical background (e.g. try "Fermat's Last Theorem" by Simon Singh). By contrast, "Patterns in the Sand" avoids depth in its explanations, almost as if to 'spare' its readers, which instead produces a sense of annoyance.

I'm sure their purpose was to introduce the emerging field of chaos and complexity, but in the end I was unconvinced. I will look elsewhere to get more depth and a better read - I was glad to finish this book so I could move onto something else!

The graphics in the book are rather sparse and of poor quality.

I give this book one star because it did remind me about StarLogo, a tool for playing with parallel worlds, and also FRACTINT, a fractal generator. Both are available on the internet.

                          Book Description

Provides a clear and systematic introduction to the use of stochastic Petri nets in communications systems engineering and the analysis techniques and algorithms used in performance evaluation.
The field of communication systems is full of complex design questions concerning performance and reliability. Since data traffic and errors occur in a random fashion, stochastic models are used for developing and comparing systems. In particular, stochastic Petri nets have become a popular tool for the description and automatic evaluation of such models. The use of non-Markovian models has become important as they allow more flexibility.
                          This book
                          * Provides a clear exposition of the use of stochastic Petri nets in communication systems engineering
                          * Introduces the reader to the analysis techniques and algorithsm used in performance evaluation
                          * Provides an accompanying example to clarify the use of each definition, concept and algorithm
                          * Mathematica routines used for implementing the algorithms are available on the Wiley ftp site
The text will appeal to researchers, industrial engineers, and graduate students studying communication systems and stochastic modeling. The numerous examples will benefit those working in performance evaluation, reliability, operations research, queueing theory and computer science.

Written in the 17th century, Maxims concentrates on the wisdom of the Court of Louis XIV. As such the aphorisms are priceless. There is much to ponder and to admire in these sayings. As a snapshot into the thinking of the diplomatic class in France of that time, the book has few rivals.

La Rochefoucauld, however, is so witty and ironic that he loses both the authenticity and depth of the court experience. His charm merely substitutes for wisdom, his facility substitutes for true insight by today's standards. In short, he is easily outmatched by Schopenhauer and the master himself, Friedrich Nietzsche.

La Rochefaucauld appears so committed to the form of his aphorisms that he forfeits the delivery of driving impact. He is too French, too wrapped up in the Court of Versailles to be truly universal and timeless.

Nevertheless, Rochefaucauld offers many insights into the depth of human behaviors, particularly useful for higher social and political intrigues. Demasking many virtues as mere self-interest, La Rochefaucauld encapsulates these acute observations into disturbing, yet enjoyable, witticisms.

Free traders and Libertarians will find La Rochefaucauld part of their Olympian Deity.
