    Book Description

Surrounded by salt seas, dimpled by shining lakes, and streaked by crooked rivers, Florida is a land of water. Many of Florida's plants and animals have adapted to living in its wet places. Divided into four sections--Oceans, Coral Reefs, Coastlines, and Wetlands--this books shows you who lives on ponds and wet prairies, in swamps and sinkholes, and in the vast Everglades. Discover who lives around the edges of Florida where the land meets the sea. Find out who lives in the oceans around Florida and on the only coral reef in North America.

This book introduces you to the many species of birds, mammals, fish, flowers, and trees that are dependent upon Florida's watery world.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant travel companion.......2005-10-22

I travelled through Northern England in the late 90's with an earlier edition of this guide. It was a wonderful resource for some well-known, and not so well known historic/sacred sites in England.

I visited many Roman forts, ruins, Arthurian sites, and a few not well known standing stone circles (such as Castle Rigg near Keswick in the Lake District, if you can't stand the crowds and tourism at Stonehenge!).

I flew from Canada, and backpacked around by train and bus to many out of the way sites, and this guide led me to many treasures during my travels. Highly recommended.

Another title in the fantastically fun and educational WOW series, published in association with the Science Museum. This WOW title focuses on major events in our history, from the dawn of humankind through to the Industrial Revolution and the first moon landing. Packed with facts, figures, and fantastic photographs from the Science Museum, this is told in a chatty, colloquial tone - a brilliant book for learning about how historical events have shaped the world we live in today.

                    Book Description

This is not another book about how AIDS is out of control in Africa and Third World nations, or one complaining about the inadequacy of secured funds to fight the pandemic. The author looks objectively at countries that have succeeded in reducing HIV infection rates...along with a worrisome flip side to the progress. The largely medical solutions funded by major donors have had little impact in Africa, the continent hardest hit by AIDS. Instead, relatively simple, low-cost behavioral change programs--stressing increased monogamy and delayed sexual activity for young people--have made the greatest headway in fighting or preventing the disease's spread. Ugandans pioneered these simple, sustainable interventions and achieved significant results. As National Review journalist Rod Dreher put it, "Rather than pay for clinics, gadgets and medical procedures--especially in the important earlier years of its response to the epidemic--Uganda mobilized human resources." In a New York Times interview, Green cited evidence that "partner reduction," promoted as mutual faithfulness, is the single most effective way of reducing the spread of AIDS. That deceptively simple solution is not merely about medical advances or condom use. It is about the ABC model: Abstain, Be faithful, and use Condoms if A and B are impossible. Yet deeply rooted Western biases have obstructed the effectiveness of AIDS prevention. Many Western scientists have attacked the ABC approach as impossible and moralistic. Some Western activists and HIV carriers have been outraged, thinking the approach passes moral judgment on their behaviors. But there is also a troubling suspicion among a growing number of scientists who support the ABC model that certain opponents may simply be AIDS profiteers, more interested in protecting their incomes than battling the disease. This book is a bellwether in the escalating controversy, offering persuasive evidence in support of the ABC approach and exposing the fallacies and motivations of its opponents.

                    Reviewer: Maureen Sciortino;

This book challenges the simple formula of "unprotected sex = HIV infection, so use a condom." The author provides evidence from Africa, the Caribbean and Asia to show that reduction in casual sex, not condoms, is the major factor which explains HIV prevalence reduction.

                      Book Description

This study brings together health-care professionals and scholars from a variety of disciplines who seek to understand, and prevent, the transmission of HIV. The biological and social factors concerned with the spread and impact of HIV/AIDS has resulted in dedicated research from each of the disciplines and provided unique insights into the disease. By assembling their insights in one multidisciplinary volume, this book provides a more complete picture of the complex disease, and demonstrates why preventing the spread of HIV will require interdisciplinary collaboration.

                      Download Description

Different professional and academic disciplines have addressed the HIV/AIDS pandemic from a variety of perspectives, using different analytical approaches. By bringing these together in one volume, Learning from HIV/AIDS provides a more complete picture of this multi-faceted disease - from the biological and social factors which facilitate HIV transmission - to the powerful cultural and political forces which fuel the pandemic. Chapters from contributors working on the aetiology, treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS identify how their work has helped predict the spread of HIV and has improved the survival of those infected. Yet interventions to reduce the spread of HIV have had limited success, and few HIV-infected individuals have access to combination drug therapies. Written for students and researchers, and taking an interdisciplinary perspective, this book demonstrates that progress in developing effective and acceptable interventions can only be achieved through collaboration between the biological, medical and social sciences.

                        Book Description

Providing an in-depth analysis of the opportunities and constraints faced by six small- and medium-sized enterprises in managing the burden of HIV/AIDS within their companies, this study focuses on the complexity of HIV risk dynamics, as well as the challenges of implementing effective HIV/AIDS intervention programs, and highlights achievements despite resource constraints. Through qualitative research techniques, the study reflects not only the views and opinions of management, but also the experiences of ordinary employees as participants in HIV/AIDS interventions.

                            Description:
Learning and memory impairments are frequently observed in patients suffering from AIDS Dementia Complex (ADC). These effects have been linked to the presence of gp120, an HIV viral coat glycoprotein. The present study investigated the possibility that gp120 prevents the uptake of extracellular glutamate by astrocytes, leading to an interruption of the glutamate-glutamine cycle and a subsequent impairment of memory. Ten microliters of 10nM gp120 was bilaterally injected into the region of the intermediate medial mesopallium of day-old chicks at various times before, or after, training using a single-trial passive avoidance task. Gp120 was found to significantly impair memory retention when injected 10-40min after training. Memory impairments were evident within 5min of gp120 administration and remained evident 24h later. Further, the amnestic effect of gp120 could be overcome with glutamine or with precursors of glutamate synthesis, but only weakly by glutamate. These results support the conclusion that the amnestic effect of gp120 is due to an impaired uptake of glutamate by astrocytes and a subsequent interruption of glutamine supply to neurones. The data indicate that the glutamate-glutamine cycle may be a useful therapeutic target in the treatment of ADC.

                                  Book Description

The main theme of the book is the theory of heights as they appear in various guises. This includes a large body of results on Mahler's measure of the height of a polynomial of which topic there is no book available. The genesis of the measure in a paper by Lehmer is looked at, which is extremely well-timed due to the revival of interest following the work of Boyd and Deninger on special values of Mahler's measure. The authors'approach is very down to earth as they cover the rationals, assuming no prior knowledge of elliptic curves. The chapters include examples and particular computations. A large chunk of the book has been devoted to the elliptic Mahler's measure. Special calculation have been included and will be self-contained. One of the most important results about Mahler's measure is that it is the entropy associated to a dynamical system. The authors devote space to discussing this and to giving some convincing and original examples to explain this phenomenon.

                                    Book Description

A remarkable interplay exists between the fields of elliptic functions and orthogonal polynomials. In the first monograph to explore their connections, Elliptic Polynomials combines these two areas of study, leading to an interesting development of some basic aspects of each. It presents new material about various classes of polynomials and about the odd Jacobi elliptic functions and their inverses. The term elliptic polynomials refers to the polynomials generated by odd elliptic integrals and elliptic functions. In studying these, the authors consider such things as orthogonality and the construction of weight functions and measures, finding structure constants and interesting inequalities, and deriving useful formulas and evaluations. Although some of the material may be familiar, it establishes a new mathematical field that intersects with classical subjects at many points. Its wealth of information on important properties of polynomials and clear, accessible presentation make Elliptic Polynomials valuable to those in real and complex analysis, number theory, and combinatorics, and will undoubtedly generate further research.

                                    Book Description

This book applies the recent techniques of gauge theory to study the smooth classification of compact complex surfaces. The study is divided into four main areas: Classical complex surface theory, gauge theory and Donaldson invariants, deformations of holomorphic vector bundles, and explicit calculations for elliptic sur§ faces. The book represents a marriage of the techniques of algebraic geometry and 4-manifold topology and gives a detailed exposition of some of the main themes in this very active area of current research.
