Mount Rainier, North America's biggest volcano, looms over Seattle like an invitation to... adventure? Disaster? Discovery? It's all of the above for Bruce Barcott, a Seattle writer who captures the mountain from multiple angles in this luminous biography that defines Rainier's landscape to be like none other on the continent. By turns witty and introspective, Barcott's trip to the top of the glacier-clad peak is filled with history, scientific observation, and a divided personal attachment that struggles to make sense of the mountain and its effect on the surrounding land and people. The Measure of a Mountain is a literate, entertaining view of a totemic Northwest landmark.

Book Description

What happens when the most potent icon of the Pacific Northwest--Mount Rainier--is explored, explained, and observed by one of the region's most promising literary talents? A mythic mountainis uncovered that is both beautiful and terrifying.

1 out of 5 stars Just another "environmental " "journalist".......2007-03-28

The one star is for having the nerve to call Michael Crichton's State of Fear "a horrible anti-science potboiler, which was easily the worst book I read all year".

2 out of 5 stars No desire to vist Ranier after this.......2004-12-31

After slogging through this overwritten and overwrought account of the author's obsession with Mr. Rainier, I lost what little interest I had in ever visiting the place. The mountain is painted as dreary and gray, with grimy little spots of human encroachment. The only moderately interesting part of the book are the chapters on the Himalayas and high altitude climbing, which, if Barcott stayed on point, would not even be in the book. No wonder his girlfriend got fed up with him; he is not just a bore, he is a bore with an ill-defined and pointless obsession.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book Ever.......2003-07-24

I think if I were stranded on a deserted island, I would want a copy of this book as well as all those Dostoevsky's I've always promised myself I would read one day. Being an avid climber, this is probably my favorite book of all times, and the book I am always sure to purchase as a gift for others to enjoy. This is NOT a climbing guide or a book just for the climbing community (although we love it). This is a book for anyone who loves the Pacific Northwest, mountains, mountain weather, great stories of adventure and tragedy, geology, hight altitude bugs, plants, animals, and good humor. Each chapter unfolds an entire diverse topic. You'll find yourself going back and reading your favorite chapters.

5 out of 5 stars You'll Be Looking for People to Read This Book To!.......2002-12-12

I bought this book a couple of years ago and have reread it twice already. The first time I read it I found myself hunting down my husband over and over saying "you've got to listen to this"... Parts of the book are laugh-out-loud funny. But in addition to the humor, the book is a well-written and imformative glimpse into all facets of Mt. Rainier. I've been in love with this mountain since I was a child, and I highly recommend this interesting book by a talented author.

4 out of 5 stars Trying to Measure up to Ranier.......2002-07-29

If you are interested in the outdoors, American history, geology, glaciology, entomology or ecology, then this book is worth your time. Barcott has assembled a witty, introspective book on all things Rainier.

I had never heard of Barcott until a friend sent me this book in preparation for a trip to Rainier. By the time I finished the book, I was equally more drawn to and fearful of the mountain than before. And Barcott is in good company. Jon Krakauer, who had the same effect on Everest in the minds of many several years ago with Into Thin Air, has some impressive things to say about Barcott's work on the back cover.

At one point, while discussing the natural sciences as Rainier relates to them, Barcott mentions that "science isn't truth, it's merely our best stab at it." In describing this book, I'd characterize it not as an authoritative work on Rainier, but Barcott's personal best stab at it. This is a fun, non-scholarly book that offers insight into virtually every aspect of Rainier, including the history of how it got its name, the bugs that inhabit the mountain, the annual dance of glacial shift, the wild flowers that keep the mountains delicate ecology in balance and the people who are drawn to the mountain, each for their own reasons.

Rainier is an intriguing mountain, and Measure of a Mountain is equally intriguing. Barcott's no nonsense, balanced style makes you feel like you are talking to a friend about their own obsession with Rainier, and his descriptions of hikes around the perimeter of the mountain make you feel like you are suffering the bug bites and soaking in the sublime surroundings right there with him. Most of all, Measure of a Mountain is a vivid portrait of one man's attempt to find balance and to understand himself in light of his surroundings and Barcott's style set against the backdrop of Rainier delivers an account free of the indulgence and self-obsession that so typically taints writers.

This is a good book, and worth a few hours of your time.

Book lists Ted & Wally's as an attraction in Lincoln - the original T&W is here in Omaha, Old Market. For a unique ice cream experience in Lincoln, try visiting the UN-L Dairy Store. The ice cream is delicious, there is a "Food Science" display, and native gardens right outside. There is a small quilt museum nearby at the Home Ec College. P.S. UN-L is my Alma Mater.

Champions Fun Center is in Lincoln - she lists Champions Fun Center as an attraction in some small town in south-central Nebraska - I wouldn't bother going there.

I needed an extra map to locate many of the smaller towns mentioned. You might want to order this book with a map of Nebraska to avoid frustration.

I saw this at the local University library and ran home to order it. It is a cut above standard lab books. It has the personal feel from the author and is enjoyable reading (if you are a chemistry teacher!). I'm using it at the high school level but it is definitely more geared for freshman year undergrad.

                    Book Description

This book documents the recent focus on a branch of Riemannian geometry called Comparison Geometry. The simple idea of comparing the geometry of an arbitrary Riemannian manifold with the geometries of constant curvature spaces has seen a tremendous evolution recently. This volume is an up-to-date reflection of the recent development regarding spaces with lower (or two-sided) curvature bounds. The content reflects some of the most exciting activities in comparison geometry during the year and especially of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute's workshop devoted to the subject. This volume features both survey and research articles. It also provides complete proofs: in one case, a new, unified strategy is presented and new proofs are offered. This volume will be a valuable source for advanced researchers and those who wish to learn about and contribute to this beautiful subject.

It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A733423. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Several previous studies investigated the performance of competing circular error probable (CEP) estimators for small samples. This estimation is important in ICBM analysis because, due to expense, there are a limited number of ICBM test launches. In the most recent previous study (1993), Tongue considered five CEP estimators in a simulation test, attempting to determine the behavior of these estimators for populations of various bias, ellipticity, correlation, and sample size. In this paper, we build on Tongue's findings in three ways: (1) The number of estimators compared is expanded to eight. (2) Different factors and factor levels are used. (3) In addition to analyzing simulated samples based on the population parameters used to create them, we sort the entire set of samples generated into subsets (sample analysis sets) based strictly on their sample statistics. Analysis conducted on these sample analysis sets models the real life situation of estimating CEP, given a small sample from an unknown population, using only sample statistics.

The Storming Media report number is A270863. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Reducing a neural network's complexity improves the ability of the network to be applied to future examples. Like an overfitted regression function, neural networks may miss their target because of the excessive degrees of freedom stored up in unnecessary parameters. Over the past decade, the subject of pruning networks has produced non-statistical algorithms like Skeletonization, Optimal Brain Damage, and Optimal Brain Surgery as methods to remove connections with the least salience. There are conflicting views as to whether more than one parameter can be removed at a time. The methods proposed in this research use statistical multiple comparison procedures to remove multiple parameters in the model when no significant difference exists. While computationally intensive, the Tukey-Kramer method compares well with Optimal Brain Surgery in pruning and network performance. When the Tukey-Kramer method has inefficient sampling requirements, Weibull distribution theory alleviates the computation burden of bootstrap resampling with single sample analysis, while maintaining comparable network performance.

                        Book Description

This textbook introduces techniques from nonlinear analysis at an early stage. Such techniques have recently become an indispensable tool in research in geometry, and they are treated here for the first time in a textbook. Topics include: Differentiable and Riemannian manifolds, metric properties, tensor calculus, vector bundles; the Hodge Theorem for de Rham cohomology; connections and curvature, the Yang-Mills functional; geodesics and Jacobi fields, Rauch comparison theorem and applications; Morse theory (including an introduction to algebraic topology), applications to the existence of closed geodesics; symmetric spaces and Kähler manifolds; the Palais-Smale condition and closed geodesics; Harmonic maps, minimal surfaces.

4 out of 5 stars maths background for General Relativity and QFT.......2007-01-11

For theoretical physicists, especially those studying Einstein's Theory of General Relativity, Or if your subject is quantum field theory. Jost's book is good preparation. He offers an in-depth teaching of Riemannian geometry. So ideas like covariant and contravariant derivatives on a manifold take on elegant meaning.

Note that General Relativity does not get an explicit mention. However, a typical physics GR course might often not have time to give a good discussion of the underlying maths. And standard GR texts, like Misner, Thorne and Wheeler or Weinberg, also tend to have very abbreviated explanations of the maths. So Jost's book is useful for those of you inclined to look further.

The length of the book means it's probably too long for a standard 1 term or semester course, if the intent is to entirely cover the book.

5 out of 5 stars Intro to Riemannian Geom. and Geom. Analysis.......1999-07-02

Covers standard material on Reimannian Geometry. In addition: variational problems from QFT. Spin geometry and Dirac operators are explained in detail.

                            Description:
To determine the degree of comparability between three spectrometers (Analytical Spectral Devices FieldSpec Pro FR (FR), Analytical Spectral Devices HandHeld (HH), and UniSpec Spectral Analysis System (UN)), leaf spectra of three species (Cafea arabica, Lantana camara, Eriobotrya japonica), recorded from each instrument, were compared using two illumination, viewing, and field of view (FOV) scenarios. Scenario 1 eliminated differences due to illumination, viewing, and FOV conditions. Scenario 2 represented a 'typical' illumination and viewing set-up for each instrument. Six vegetation indices were computed from the raw spectra as well as spectra (1) interpolated to 1-nm intervals (the sampling interval of the FR) and (2) interpolated to 3.3 nm (the sampling interval of the UN). The spectra measured from the three instruments differed in both shape and amplitude, more so for scenario 2 than scenario 1. In many cases, indices obtained using one instrument differed significantly from the same indices obtained using the other two instruments (but the same leaves), regardless of scenario. The severity of these differences varied between indices. Interpolation was generally ineffective in 'matching' the spectra from the various instruments. Care should be exercised when comparing indices generated from spectra measured from different instruments.

In the spirit of Blackgentelmen.com come five sensual novellas about the excitement -- and danger -- of meeting someone online.

Welcome to Sistergirls.com, where men can meet the women of their dreams. Making a selection is just a beginning -- these ladies are more than mere images, and getting to know them is the really fun part. But just like most things, looks can be deceiving. And while the guys who take this plunge think they're in for the adventure of a lifetime, some of them are headed for the worst nightmare. Gathering five dramatically different voices between two covers, these stories travel the tantalizing crossroads between romance and cyberspace.

As today's world of dating expands beyond the traditional dinner-and-movie to the vast realm of Internet, this collection offers a timely and exciting glimpses into the adventures of cyber-relationships.

                                    5 out of 5 stars I liked these stories........2005-04-13

The Gentleman in Sistergirls.com carried their weight. Two of the reviews listed complained about the two best stories in the book, which is sad because both gentlemen, Earl Sewell and William Fredrick Cooper are two of the most talented writers to come along in recent memory. "You're Making Me Wet" is my favorite story, and "Legal Days, Lonely Nights" is very well written. The other stories lacked in potency, but I enjoyed it. It's a shame readers have their minds made up on what's good before they read it.

                                    2 out of 5 stars I expected more.............2004-11-28

I didn't enjoy this book too much. The first story 'Legal Days, Lonely Nights' was entertaining but tends to drag on. Mr. Cooper's description of the cybersexcapades were captivating but the story lacked in the imagination department. The next two stories, 'You're Making Me Wet' and 'Somewhere Between Love And Sarcasm' were terrible. 'You're Making Me Wet' was about a father/son team who happened to fall in love with a mother/daughter pair. Is it just me or isn't that step-incest? If mommy and daddy get married then won't son and daughter be brother and sister? Right. 'Somewhere Between Love And Sarcasm' was a witty tale that sometimes brought a smile to my face but what woman knows a man who will let her walk all over him like that? 'Life Happens' is an interesting tale about a lesbian turned hetro that finds true love over the net. Very happy ending but not too much for the entertainment aspect. 'The Wanting'....well you'll have to read that one yourself. Talk about a hustle. I would loan this book out and wouldn't be upset if I didn't get it back. Definately not worth the money. Save your bills for the next Zane installment.

                                    5 out of 5 stars In a Word - HOT!!!.......2004-02-01

This book will titillate the senses and invoke a warm sensation from its readers! You'll want to curl up in your own private cozy place and not put this book down!

Each story is very well done, creatively descriptive and communicated in good taste. Kudos to each each of the contributors - Earl Sewell, Rique Johnson, Michael Presley, V. Anthony Rivers and William Fredrick Cooper! Each novella ties into this imaginary online romance website called Sistergirls.com and builds from there. The unique voice that each author lends to his own particular story will compel you to want to read more. "Legal Days, Lonely Nights" by William Fredrick Cooper portrays an up and coming attorney who is sizzling both in and out of the courtroom. He flirts with online romance via the Sistergirls.com website and blazes a trail of passion with one of its members that is unrivaled. There is a twist to this story that you do not want to miss! "You're Making Me Wet" by Earl Sewell will also have you lustily turning the pages to see what will happen next.

I could go on and on, but will leave this parting thought - if you're hungry for a book to peak your senses and tap your curiousity, then Sistergirls.com is definitely the book for you!

You Are Making Me Wet" by Earl Sewell - The best story in the book. This story was funny, and sweet. I enjoyed it, and will read this one again.

"Life Happens" by Rique Johnson - was interesting. The story kept my attention.

"The Wanting" by Michael Presley - another interesting story, and it had a nice little hidden message.

"Legal Days, Lonely Nights" by William Fredrick Cooper - This story started off slow, picked up and by then end you were catching your breath.

"Somewhere Between Love and Sarcasm" by V. Anthony Rivers - This was the WORST story in the book. There was nothing erotic about it, and it was no where between love and sarcasm. The story was all Sarcasm and it was stupid and had no business in the book.

My suggestion is read all the stories in this book EXCEPT Somewhere Between Love and Sarcasm. Trust me you will not miss anything by not reading this story.

                                    5 out of 5 stars [my review].......2003-10-17

I really enjoyed this collection of short stories. Two of them really stand out. Earl Sewell really did well in You're Making Me wet. That scene after the party made me moist between the legs. Mmmph.

William Fredrick Cooper's Legal Days, Lonely Nights is a very special story. Not only was it entertaining, erotic and arousing, but it had depth. He even talked about uplifting mailroom clerks. I wanna meet this dude.
