Description:
Most ski slopes in Japan are established by forest clearcutting, scraping off the ground surface and thereby artificial seeding in well-developed forests. Recently, some ski slopes have been abandoned owing to economical failure, and more skis resorts will go bankrupt. To restore abandoned ski slopes, therefore, we have to find out appropriate indicators to restore forest cover with low cost. Vegetation data were collected in Yuzawa, central Honshu, Japan (500-760m elevation), where ski slopes are over-concentrated. To predict the possibility of forest development, relationships between tree stem density and vegetation characteristics were examined. Trees did not establish in areas where the introduced plant cover was more than 40%. Of native grasslands, Miscanthus sinensis grassland showed the highest stem density but did not show high species richness. In particular, stem density increased with increasing M. sinensis cover. To indicate advanced successional sere towards forests, therefore, M. sinensis cover is a more appropriate indicator rather than species richness.

Excellent and utterly comprehensive... in 1993!.......2001-09-10

The author evidently went everywhere and skied every piste. He meticulously records all the useful information (including piste maps) and writes a little description of each resort. This is a bible for those of us who live in Japan and are keen skiers.

I wish they would publish an updated version as things have moved on a bit now.

Insightful look at Japan.......1998-07-29

T.R. Reid was/is a foreign correspondent for The Washington Post based in Tokyo and is talked into going on a ski vacation. This is the beginning of an adventure and after much research we have his new book. There are about 500 ski resorts in Japan and many of them are small by international standards. Reid gives an interesting historical oversight of the Japanese ski industry and the internal politics today as well as normal travel information. It is well worth reading even if you are not planning a visit.

Understanding the Light Microscope consists of four original computer programs with an explanatory book. Author Dan Goldstein says using the programs can teach aspects of microscopy and diffraction often missed from formal courses, adding, "... what one non-mathematician has created should not be beyond the understanding of others!" The book aims to provide understanding at a level deeper than customary in existing texts and in a form accessible to microscope users, particularly biologists. It covers simple ray optics, the aberrations of "real" (thick) lenses, polarized light, and the influence of diffraction on imaging. The book can be read alone, but appreciation of its contents is greatly enhanced when used in conjunction with the programs.
D J Goldstein was a Nuffield Dominion Travelling Fellow at Oxford University and a visiting Professor in Pittsburgh. He taught at the Universities of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Sheffield (UK) while publishing research in embryology, histology, immunology, histochemistry and microscopy. Since retiring in 1989 as Reader in Anatomy at Sheffield University, he has been an independent research worker in biomedical science.

Eleven years before Uncle Tom's Cabin fanned the fires of abolition in North America, an aristocratic Cuban woman told an impassioned story of the fatal love of a mulatto slave for his white owner's daughter. So controversial was Sab's theme of miscegenation and its parallel between the powerlessness and enslavement of blacks and the economic and matrimonial subservience of women that the book was not published in Cuba until 1914, seventy-three years after its original 1841 publication in Spain.

Also included in the volume is Avellaneda's Autobiography (1839), whose portrait of an intelligent, flamboyant woman struggling against the restrictions of her era amplifies the novel's exploration of the patriarchal oppression of minorities and women.

Romantic vision of Cuba.......2000-11-30

This novel is a great example of romantic literature from Cuba in the 1840's. It was written before Uncle Tom's Cabin but still shows the situation of slaves and the need for reform. A must read for people interested in slavery or early female writers. The romantic movement in literature is very strong in this book but still provides a great historical viewpoint.
