Customer Reviews:
How to Work on the Present and the Future at the Same Time.......2006-06-02
This is Ken Blanchard's idea of how to propel your company securely into the future by dividing up your talent pool into two self-chosen groups - the P(resent) Team and the F(uture) Team. Aside from their regularly assigned positions, employees would commit themselves to one of these teams based on their own personal preference. Ken says you have adminstrators and producers that gravitate toward the P team and innovators and integrators that belong on the F team. These teams are overseen by a balanced Steering Committee that adopts the best of both teams. A patchwork of recycled ideas.
Interesting but non-riveting.
Four Stars
Insightful!.......2001-04-18
Ken Blanchard, one of the most successful business authors of all time, teams up with Terry Waghorn in this clear, concise guide to surviving and prospering in a time of great change. The authors show you how to guide your business through the present while simultaneously preparing for and implementing changes for the future. This well-balanced book, which focuses as much on vision, intuitive processes and thinking as it does on nuts-and-bolts strategy, is a valuable guide for working and leading in the twenty-first century. We [...] recommend this book for everyone in business, and find it particularly essential for leaders, managers, and business owners.
Attention Survivors!.......2000-10-02
Mission Possible... is a book about surviving today and recreating your organization for tomorrow. The authors use the analogy of a sand castle which faces the incoming tide. Does one leave it alone to face certain destruction and hope that it doesn't happen for a while; or does one take immediate action to build barriers along the beach for protection, which may or may not help; or does one plan for the future by redesigning the structure as well as relocate the castle? People are the key to an organization's success and the way a leader can best encourage them towards this goal is to allow them to become involved in improving the present or inventing the organization's tomorrow. It's all about the journey and the understanding of what is possible.
I used this for a reading assignment for a class and found it to be interesting. It certainly is easy to read and while others may find it's message too simple, I feel that it is the simple message that gets across easily and stays with you the longest.
Find some 21st Century spectacles - quick!.......1999-04-08
Buy the book because there is far too much useful information to take in at even two listenings. Although it starts as typical `heard it all before' the last two sides are remarkable in their depth and panorama. There is advice and guidance for everyone here. We need to ask questions of our customers and competitors. How would our customers redesign our company? Three steps: vision - picture of what we need to become to better serve existing customers, prepare - what is the shortest path from where we are to where we need to be, deliver - change organisation to match vision. Customer facing people need to be empowered to solve problems on the spot, not refer to their managers. Your organisation is evaluated by how quickly it can respond to customer needs and problems. The person they care about is are the ones they talk to and they want top service from these people. Making all your people your business partners is a way of raising financial awareness and therefor cutting costs (story of 5c margin in restaurant). Divide into cost centres and profit centres. What is the strategic reason for performing the function of the cost centres? Should the work be outcourced? Should be spending more time managing profits not costs. Profit results from keeping needs of customers and employees paramount. 4 key managerial roles: producing - technical skills in field, make things happen, implementing - planners and administrators, maintain order and control, innovating - entrepreneurs, future looking and integrating - motivators, good at teamwork. Also 4 mismanagement styles: lone rangers - producers who cannot delegate, bureaucrats - implementers who focus on administration, process and rules, arsonists - innovators who never follow through or implement the ideas of others, super followers who cannot provide direction. In times of change are leaders willing to: relinquish `parental control; look at both long and short term; supply resources and support; communicate and remove obstacles; help others overcome uncertainty and fear; admit that they do not have all the answers. Control kills learning, invention and commitment. Bossidy - burning platform principle, people `jump' only when they see flames themselves. Leaders need to help people see the flames. Long term provides focus not on survival but the future. When in doubt communicate more, not less. Nelson Mandela - "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us." In order to help people manage change we need to keep everyone informed so they know what is in it for them. Change means that people feel awkward about needing to act differently, they focus on what they will lose, (what you resist, persists), they feel alone, they feel overwhelmed if there is too much change so they need to experience some successes before taking on more change. Readiness for change varies. Although people feel that they need more resources to do more - we have to do more with less. Need to keep everyone encouraged by catching people doing something right, but leaders need sufficient self-esteem to help others feel good about themselves. Discipline required managing perpetual churn (whitewater). Catch yourself doing something right - managing your self-talk. What do you want to be doing? Our problem is not what we see, but what we see with. At the brink of the 21st Century we cannot see the future with 20th Century spectacles.
Disppointing.......1998-11-03
I should have come to this site and read the reviews before purchasing the book. It was very disappointing. The chapter headings were interesting, and some were good insights. However, the author spent too much time around elaborating too many of the sub-points. There were also little case studies. Felt like the book could be condensed a lot more.

Mandatory reading for all!.......2000-01-29
This little gem was sent to me by my cousin who is a research scientist at Mayo Clinic. I am eternally grateful! Each of my Environmental Science and Biology 1 students will now be reading it as part of their course work. Milbrath cuts to the chase in a dialogue that is easily understood by the layman. It is rather ironic -in the 1800's Chief Seattle spoke of "the end of living - the beginning of survival" ...Rachel Carson.....Lester Milbrath.... are we never going to hear the words and exercise the right? I would encourage all science teachers to make this book required reading! As Milbrath says, "Nature, life systems, and society are one; they have a common fate." Let's be eager to learn this TODAY! Milbrath's informed common sense cuts through complexity.......1999-06-13
I've read a number of books that purport to clearly explain the ins and outs of environmentalism, but none come close to this little Socratic dialogue. Using a format of questions and answers with his neighbor, Milbrath (a professor at SUNY and longtime philosopher of environmental sanity) takes a leap beyond both strident rhetoric and turgid college text writing to provide a major public service. If this were published by a mainstream publisher, it'd be on the bestseller list.

Very little information about what the different herbs are used for........2005-07-13
It has all the information you need for starting your herb business, just dont expect to learn what people use the herbs for.
If you want to grow herbs commercially, read this.......2003-01-03
I counsel people on growing medicinal herbs commercially and this is the number one book I recommend to people considering starting a herb business. Lee Sturdivant provides inspirational stories from successful herb businesses around the nation. Tim Blakley provides an extensive listing of a wide variety of popular medicinal herbs and the most up-to-date information on how to grow them. Harvesting, packaging, and marketing information is also provided. Excellent book! I hope the authors will keep this one updated for us.
Everything you need to know...and more.......2000-01-10
This is an amazing book. When my husband and I began to consider the cultivation of medicinal herbs as a retirement project, The Bootstrap Guide was recommended to us by Heather McNeill of Frontier Herbs, a major medicinal herb marketer.
The Bootstrap Guide to Medicinal Herbs exceeded my expectations. In addition to an overview of the medicinal herb industry, there are profiles of growers and herbal product manufacturers, growing requirements, and detailed instructions for propagation, cultivation, harvesting, and marketing, including questionaires filled out by herb marketing companies such as Frontier and Celestial Seasonings. These questionaires alone are worth the price of the book, giving such information as minimum purchase quantities, preference for fresh or dried, organic or non-organic, and market projections.
In addition, there is a thorough discussion of the ethics of wildcrafting and the need to develop domesticated sources for the many herbs whose popularity has made them endangered species. All this in a friendly, concise, well-written 318 pages.
If herb-growing or market gardening forms a part of your life, or your plans, read this book.

Nicholson's Saved Me.......2005-06-28
As a young student, who had grown up in the middle of a cornfield and now found herself in London in the 70's, the Nicholson's London Guide saved me more than once. The small street and tube maps helped me find my way. The clear, concise instructions about how to pay (and how to get off) when sitting on the top of a double decker bus were invaluable. This guide helped me find cheap theater tickets, a good laundry, and the best flea markets around. Because it was pocket-sized, it was my constant companion. Because it was bright red, it was never lost... and neither was I.
Now, returning to London for the first time in years I am saddened to learn that the Guide is no longer published. I feel sorry for all the young midwestern students wandering around lost in London today.
Bring it back!

Customer Reviews:
Morowitz does it again!.......2000-02-14
The great Harold Morowitz once again dazzles us with his insights into science, the world and various other topics. One caution: despite its title, this book has only one essay that deals with the origin of life (the essay shares the same title as the book itself). Unlike "Cosmic Joy And Local Pain" there is no thematic unity that is shared by the subject matter of his essays. This is by no means bad, it's just good to know that this is NOT a series of essays which deal exclusively with the origin of life on Earth. Morowitz writes delightful pieces on ethics in universities, the academic standards of pre-med students (which are much lower and driven by politics far more than I had thought possible), the pragmatic uses of liberal arts degrees as well as other topics. His writing is succinct and always insightful. If one is interested in the vast scope and inner-workings of science, one can do much worse than to follow along and trace the path of trenchant observations of Harold J. Morowitz.

Book Description
Symbolic asymptotics has recently undergone considerable theoretical development, especially in areas where power series are no longer an appropriate tool. Implementation is beginning to follow.
The present book, written by one of the leading specialists in the area, is currently the only one to treat this part of symbolic asymptotics. It contains a good deal of interesting material in a new, developing field of mathematics at the intersection of algebra, analysis and computing, presented in a lively and readable way. The associated areas of zero equivalence and Hardy fields are also covered.
The book is intended to be accessible to anyone with a good general background in mathematics, but it nonetheless gets right to the cutting edge of active research. Some results appear here for the first time, while others have hitherto only been given in preprints.
Due to its clear presentation, this book is interesting for a broad audience of mathematicians and theoretical computer scientists.

Book Description
Semiclassical approximation addresses the important relationship between quantum and classical mechanics. In recent years mathematical theory has undergone significant growth, mainly due to microlocal analysis techniques. This volume develops the basic methods of the theory, including the WKB-method, stationary phase and h-pseudodifferential operators. The authors employ the systematic use of a Cauchy formula that simplifies the functional calculus of pseudodifferential operators. The applications described include recent results on the tunnel effect, the asymptotics of eigenvalues in relation to classical trajectories and normal forms, plus slow perturbations of periodic Schrödinger operators appearing in solid state physics. The text assumes no previous specialized knowledge in quantum mechanics or microlocal analysis, and only general knowledge of spectral theory in Hilbert space, distributions, Fourier transforms and some differential geometry.
Book Description
An elegant translation of one of the most popular novels of its time.
Rousseau's great epistolary novel, Julie, or the New Heloise, has been virtually unavailable in English since 1810. In it, Rousseau reconceptualized the relationship of the individual to the collective and articulated a new moral paradigm. The story follows the fates and smoldering passions of Julie d'Etange and St. Preux, a one-time lover who re-enters Julie's life at the invitation of her unsuspecting husband, M. de Wolmar.
The complex tones of this work made it a commercial success and a continental sensation when it first appeared in 1761, and its embodiment of Rousseau's system of thought, in which feelings and intellect are intertwined, redefined the function and form of fiction for decades. As the characters negotiate a complex maze of passion and virtue, their purity of soul and honest morality reveal, as Rousseau writes in his preface, "the subtleties of heart of which this work is full."
A comprehensive introduction and careful annotations make this novel accessible to contemporary readers, both as an embodiment of Rousseau's philosophy and as a portrayal of the tension and power inherent in domestic life.
Customer Reviews:
A Superb Story.......2003-07-07
It is a pity that Julie, or the New Heloise is neither better known nor more widely read. It is one of the great novels. Rousseau may be most famous as a philosopher and Julie includes many philosophical passages, discussing issues such as education, virtue and religion, but he shows in this novel that he was both a fine writer and an able storyteller. The ideas he puts into the mouths of his characters are interesting, the debates they engage in are continually fascinating, but it is the story he tells which is truly memorable for it is deeply moving.
The novel consists of a series of letters some quite short, some extending to many pages. The main characters are Julie d'Étange, a young Swiss girl of noble birth and her tutor who has the pseudonym St. Preux. They begin an affair and fall deeply in love. It is this initial relationship of pupil to teacher, developing into passion, which is supposed to remind the reader of the medieval lovers Abelard and Heloise. Moreover both pairs of lovers face difficulties and opposition from family. They experience the joys of love and suffer because of it. These parallels however, should not be overestimated, Rousseau is not retelling an old story and Julie's life is quite different from that of Heloise. The story has numerous twists and turns and many surprises along the way. Other characters interact with the young lovers write letters to them and to each other. Gradually over the course of a long novel one begins to care about these people. It is here that Rousseau's skill as a writer is most evident. I found myself emotionally involved in the story of Julie and St. Preux in a way which was quite unexpected. By the end I had felt much joy and not a little sorrow and had been touched by a novel that can bring forth tears.
The epistolary form works very well, and is used cleverly, even if sometimes a letter is so large it could scarcely fit into an envelope. It has to be said however, that this novel is difficult. It has to be read carefully as it continually refers itself back to previous letters, which means that one is constantly re-reading previous passages. Sometimes it is necessary to read a paragraph over again in order to fully understand it. This is not a novel that can be skimmed, but must be savoured and read over a period of weeks. This fact should not discourage anyone from reading Julie, for it is as rewarding as it is challenging. If it is hard, it is also a pleasure.
The edition of Julie published by the University Press of New England is scholarly and a stunning achievement. The translation of Philip Steward and Jean Vaché is the first full translation into English since the 18th century. It reads well and seems both accurate and fluent. There are over seventy pages of notes, which I found both essential for my understanding of the novel and interesting in the way they expand and explain the various obscure references in the text. Stewart writes a relatively short introduction, which is clear and comprehensible. It is neither overly academic nor dry. My only wish is that it were somewhat longer. Spread throughout the novel are twelve beautiful illustrations depicting scenes from the novel. Finally this edition includes a summary of each letter and a chronology of the events in the novel. I found these very useful as a means of finding my way through what can be a dense and complex correspondence. Julie, or the New Heloise is a truly great novel and this edition does it justice.
