Book Description
The contemporary environmental crisis asks fundamental questions about culture. Like other radical critiques, environmentalism cuts across academic boundaries and offers a major challenge to existing cultural and political divisions. This is the first book to draw together the rich variety of environmentalist positions--from ecofeminism to deep ecology--and theorize their contribution to critical theory, literature and popular culture. A distinguished cast of contributors explore the theoretical agenda for ecocriticism, present a green rereading of literary history, and look at contemporary culture: from poetry to children’s books and television.

Book Description
This volume combines a series of rigorous, original research papers with more informal recollections of James L. Patton, who served as Curator of Mammals in the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology and as Professor of Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1969 until 2001. As a curator and a member of the Berkeley faculty, Patton made an indelible mark on vertebrate evolutionary biology. In addition to significantly advancing studies of mammalian evolutionary genetics, systematics, and phylogeography, he was instrumental in shaping the careers of vertebrate biologists throughout the Americas. This book brings to life both the distinguished career and the distinctive personality of this highly respected evolutionary biologist.

From the author: 4,4'-Oxydiphthalic anhydride (1) was reacted with (s)-(+)-valine (2) in acetic acid and the resulting imide-acid 3 was obtained in high yield. This compound 3 was converted to diacid chloride 4 by reaction with excess amount of thionyl chloride. The polycondensation reaction of diacid chloride 4 with several aromatic diamines such as 4,4'-sulfonyldianiline (5a), 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl methane (5b), 4,4'-diaminodiphenylether (5c), p-phenylenediamine (5d), m-phenylenediamine (5e), and 4,4'-diaminobiphenyl (5f) was performed by two conventional methods: low temperature solution polycondensation and a short period reflux conditions. To compare conventional solution polycondensation reaction methods with microwave-assisted polycondensation, the reactions were also carried out under microwave conditions in the presence of small amount of o-cresol that acts as a primary microwave absorber. The reaction mixture was irradiated for 4 min with 100% of radiation power. Several new optically active poly(amide-imide)s with inherent viscosity ranging from 0.26-0.44 dL/g were obtained with high yield. All of the above polymers were fully characterized by [.sup.1]H-NMR, FTIR, elemental analyses, and specific rotation techniques. Some structural characterizations and physical properties of these new optically active poly (amide-imide)s are reported. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 46:558-565, 2006. [c] 2006 Society of Plastics Engineers

Book Description
Containing contributions from both theoretical computer scientists and people working in areas where multi-agent architectures are involved (artificial intelligence, artificial life, linguistics, managing complex systems), this book presents both theoretical developments and applications of grammar systems of various types (cooperating distributed grammar systems, eco-grammar). A survey of notions and results in grammar system theory is included. This book, the first one of its type, is of interest to researchers faced with complex systems which can be approached at a "syntactic" level (as symbol manipulating systems), as a distributed structure, as well as for computer scientists and mathematicians interested in grammar systems theory, who can find here both basic references, recent developments and suggestions for further research and applications.
Customer Reviews:
A very helpful book.......2006-11-06
I am a T.A. for a course in Catullus, and I find this book to be very helpful. Included in this volume are the complete extant works of Catullus, a Catulluan vocabulary (crucial because some of Catullus' more colorful vocabulary does not appear in all dictionaries), a brief and informative commentary, a list of people to whom Catullus makes reference, a review of Catullus' meters, and a glossary of terms and their definitions. This book is extremely helpful and is ideal for a student reading Catullus for the first time or a more experienced Latin reader who is attempting to read Catullus' corpus as quickly as possible.
A bit of an eyesore of a book, but useful.......2006-06-30
Daniel H. Garrison's THE STUDENT'S CATULLUS, published by University of Oklahoma press, contains all 113 poems of the standard collection which are belived to be authentic, including the fragmentary poems. Garrison provides an introduction and notes for the individual poems, as well as four appendices on various matters ("People", "Meters", "[Poetic] Terms", and "Poetic Usage") and a complete vocabulary. In his notes, Garrison often directs the student towards the meaning without giving it away as such, preserving the comedic impact of much of the shorter poems. While no scholar could deny the obscenity of much of Catullus' poetry, Garrison sometimes shows a shyness in his notes which I found odd. I used THE STUDENT'S CATULLUS for a semester-long course at Loyola University Chicago, and thought that it served my needs well.
If there is one big downside to the book, it is the typesetting. The Latin text is fine, but the notes and commentary are all done in hideous double-columns and a typeface smaller than the Latin. This is one of the least professional-looking academic books I've come across in a while. Still, that doesn't stop the content from being useful, so THE STUDENT'S CATULLUS is worth seeking out.
The perfect edition for students.......2000-08-12
This handy edition is perfect for the casual reader of Latin. Garrison's extensive notes answer most questions a reader is likely to have concerning the grammer and they also provide a considerable amount of relevent mythology. The book also contains a complete vocabulary which I have found invaluable. This is not a scholarly edition, but provides everything for the non-scholar.
Flawed..........2000-06-01
Garrison's book is not the soundest text for people reading Catullus in Latin. For one thing, the book does a disservice in "titling" every poem in the collection with an English one-liner...this goes a long way towards influencing the reader before s/he even reads the Latin. Second, there is no critical apparatus with the Latin text...and with a poet like Catullus, for whom textual issues are more than marginally important, this is a lamentable loss...even beginning Latin students can be sophisticated enough not to think that the text of an author was handed down by Jupiter on golden tablets...or in this case, in a forest green paperback. Fordyce's 1961 Oxford commentary remains standard for the poems he covers (and contrary to popular lore he did not leave the others out out of a sense of Puritanism but rather because the Oxford Press at the time thought the book would sell to a larger market with the obscene poems omitted)...there is also Merrill, still in print (he has every poem)...and for more accomplished Latinists, we now have Thomson's big 1997 volume. If you can find it, Kenneth Quinn's 1970 commentary on the whole corpus is also worth a close look...
Superlative resource for AP or college-level students........1999-12-28
This book is simply outstanding--recommended for anyone formally studying Catullus, or perhaps even any Latin student with a passing interest in the poet. Garrison is quite good, for the most part, at letting the poems shine forth unobstructed by any sort of critical commentary. At the same time, he provides a great deal of useful background info for each poem, elucidating quite well the figures and places of Catullus' works, as well as extensive notes, often covering many of the more obscure aspects of the poems.
Any drawbacks of the text escape my mind--I have had nothing but positive experiences using Garrison's text. For those studying the poems of Catullus at or below the college level, it's indubitably the best of its kind.

Additional poems added to the 2005 AP Latin Exam!.......2004-11-07
Catullus for the AP: A Supplement is a necessary auxiliary text for students who are studying for the AP Latin exam with the original book Catullus for the AP by the same authors. This supplement provides all the additional poems by Catullus that were added to the advanced placement exam for 2005. When using this book to prepare for the AP exam, be sure to use it in conjunction with Catullus for the AP because it does not reprint the poems from the original book that will still be on the 2005 AP exam - this is just the additional poetry. The format of the book is the same as the originals with pages that are easy for teachers to reproduce for the class.

Customer Reviews:
This could be a much better book.......2006-01-13
I am currently enrolled in AP Latin Literature and my class has been using this book because it contains the new poems for the AP exam. We've all found the book's notes to be to sparse to be of any real help in translating and the glossary in the back to be seriously lacking. If you are planning on using this text, however, please translate with a good Latin-English dictionary nearby and with plenty of patience. Also note that the Latin text in this book does not have macrons.
Dual Appeal Goes Deeper than just AP Prep.......2003-07-21
I know from personal experience that this Catullus Student Text is an excellent preparation for the "A.P. Latin: Literature" test, and that students of all types in my class enjoyed using it. Like most AP texts, each poem is accompanied by vocabulary and grammar notes. However, the vocabulary notes offer more than just definition; some help to explain Catullus' word choice. For example, in Poem 1, Catullus appeals to "patrona virgo," his patron muse which the note explains is a reference to Homer's invocation of the muse. The collaboration of two editors, one a Ph.D high-school teacher and the other a Ph.D college professor, creates a student-friendly text that still encourages deeper exploration of the author's work. Moreover, brief introductions to each poem offer possible interpretations or help set the background for the poem. The editors make it clear, though, that these are only possibilities, leaving it to the students to come up with their own interpretation, aided by facts and concrete dates. These introductions also point the reader to other poems, which give more insight on the topic that Catullus is addressing. Every introduction states the meter of the poem, allowing students to practice scansion on their own.
It is the extra material, though, that truly makes the book superior. A map shows all the places described in Catullus' poems in relation to each other. The back of the book provides the metrical pattern for every meter used, the literary implications of each meter, and in which poems they are used. An Introduction describes not only Catullus' life and writing style, but gives the political background of that time period, placing all the poems in context. Moreover, the Introduction helps students get a better concept of Catullus' entire work by offering some scholarly arguments as to what order the poems were originally in, and why the editors chose to order them as they are in the text.
The accompanying Teacher's Manual, available separately, includes the poems in large type without notes, perfect for quick review in class as an overhead or worksheet. The manual also aids teachers with literal translations of the poems, practice tests, and understanding of the poems.
I highly recommend this AP Catullus text, in part because of the aid it provides for reading the poems, but more because it encourages students to develop their own informed understandings. The editors offer facts and dates, along with some possible explanations, but it is largely up to the student to explore the meanings of individual poems, as well as their connection with other poems. The desired result is to point to the significance of Catullus' work as a whole. Thus, this Catullus text is uniquely well suited for both the student who wishes to excel on the AP exam and the student who simply wishes to explore the beauty and passion in the work of Catullus.
Usable, but flawed..........2000-09-06
Having just taken AP Catullus-Ovid, I must say that while this text seemed relatively well-done and useful at first, I soon found I simply couldn't ignore its large number of faults. Yes, it's nice that the poems have most of the vocab on the facing pages--but the author seems to insist on defining excruciatingly common words (like "amo" and "dico") multiple times while leaving more obscure words for the back of the book or ignoring them entirely. Bender's text must therefore be used with a Latin-English dictionary--not the end of the world, I know, but something that shouldn't be necessary for something like this billed as a "student text."
Another problem is that the author bases much of his commentary on his own crass assumptions. Bender seems to like pointing out poetic devices (notably chiasmus) that simply *aren't there.* The sparse commentary on each poem, too, is nearly useless from a scholarly standpoint; it's well and good to tell us that one poem "provides a window into the poet's tortured soul," but does it actually help students to appreciate the poem in any meaningful form? And some actual background information on the people and places Catullus mentions so frequently would really have been nice.
I do realize that this is merely an AP text, and certainly not one designed for the serious study of Catullus and his poetry. And it does have some positive aspects: much of each poem's (more common) vocab *is* defined on the facing pages, and the margins provide plenty of space to write the translation or one's own notes. I can't help but think that Bender and Forsyth could have tried just a *little* harder with the commentary and the vocab, however. For any AP student with more than a passing interest in Catullus, I'd recommend Garrison's text in conjunction with (or just instead of) Bender's.
Excellent AP Text.......2000-06-21
Amazingly helpful to prepare students for the AP test. Includes a biography about the author, commentaries, notes, and a glossary of words used in the poems.
