Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful information........2005-08-02

This book has very accurate information for training your puppy and very accurate medical information. I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars It really works.......2004-08-02

Our new baby responds to the instructions in this book wonderfully. I was worried about getting a dog, but the results we are getting by following the instructions presented her have made me really glad that I finally got a dog. I could not be more greatful for such a good instuction manual.

4 out of 5 stars Great for the beginner!.......2004-07-09

I've been training dogs for 10 years, and I have recommended this book to all of my puppy owners! It's a great way to get through the first year of puppyhood, and have a dog you'll be proud to call yours. All of my students have found the information easy to understand, the methods easy to use, and the results are wonderful!

2 out of 5 stars Repetitive, dangerously confused, and irritating.......2003-09-09

It's easy to read, and has a few good tips, but overall I found this book very poor. The training section is broken down into stages for different-aged pups, which sounds like a good idea until you realise that training principles are the same at any age, and therefore each chapter is exasperatingly repetitive. Along with the wide spacing, big headings, short paragraphs and abundant meaningless pictures, that makes for a remarkably uninformative book. There is no discussion of major controversies such as positive versus force-based training or natural versus dry feeding; the author's preferred technique is presented as the only option and areas of huge disagreement among trainers are not even flagged. Evidently Hodgson's style appeals to some; I found it irritatingly condescending, bubbly and saccharine. Finally, the book is dangerously poorly edited: on p. 128 Hodgson says: "Don't give him free access to water yet, or he'll turn into a fountain"... then on p. 155 DeBitetto says: "Puppies need a lot of water, and restricting it can put your puppy at risk of dehydration. The only time water can be safely witheld is at night." The health section was better-written and much more informative, but you'd still be much better off buying one good training book and one good health book.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book!!!!.......2003-03-29

This book is great! It gives good insight to what the puppy is feeling and has broken down training and behavior patterns by the pups age. The book also provides good detail in health maintenance for your dog as well as a typical puppy schedule! I found the schedule to be very helpful in planning my day in order to give my pup the most attention.

      Book Description

Jason Wordie is a historian who engages a general audience with the way buildings and places reveal the history, changing nature, and culture of Hong Kong. His knowledge of Hong Kong and its history is complemented by an eye for the intriguing, and a wonderful sense of the telling anecdote that humanizes and brings history to life.

In Streets, Wordie takes the reader on 50 tours through the urban and historic places of Hong Kong Island ranging from Central through Wanchai, to Shau Kei Wan and Shek O, along the south coast from Stanley to Aberdeen, completing a circuit of the island through Pokfulam and Kennedy Town to Sheung Wan. Each place is introduced with a description of the area and the way it has changed. Then the reader is taken on a walk around the areaís streets with the important, interesting, curious, and historically illuminating sites described and illustrated.

Outstanding photographs by three of Hong Kongís most notable photographers--Richard Abrahall, Tony Hedley, and John Lambon--help make this a book to revisit many times as a handsome contemporary record of this ever-changing city.

5 out of 5 stars The ONLY Historical and Cultural Guide to Hong Kong Island.......2007-04-26

Jason Wordie is already well-known to people interested in the history of Hong Kong. His book Streets: Exploring Hong Kong Island is the only cultural and historical guidebook to the city available in English. It is leagues ahead of any of the glib mass-produced travel books for the trendy rich or the parsimonious backpacker. Mr. Wordie brings to life the overlooked stories of Hong Kong island that can be found on every street corner. He writes with a passion for the city's history that simply cannot be found elsewhere. I highly recommend the book and eagerly look forward to the publication of his guide book for Kowloon.

      Book Description

Stone Age people invented the first knives...and also the first spoons.

In the Middle Ages the first books of manners told readers to wipe their greasy fingers on the tablecloth. And in 1669 King Louis XIV ordered that table knives should have rounded ends because there'd been too many stabbings.

In What You Never Knew About Fingers, Forks, & Chopsticks, Patricia Lauber and John Manders serve up a hilarious and informative look at how ways of eating and manners have changed through the ages. This well-researched tour of social history makes the subject of how we eat more fascinating and fun than you ever imagined it could be.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Taught me a thing or two!.......2001-12-28

I did not realize the history of eating utensils was so interesting. I did become intrigued when I lived in Thailand and learned to eat their way with a fork and spoon or watched Europeans with their forks and knives. I am still not good at eating sticky rice and accompanying dishes with my hand. My favorite situation was watching Thais describe the way Chinese eat with chopsticks. The Thai think that the way Chinese eat is barbaric. Little do they know that most Americans think they eat with chopsticks too!

5 out of 5 stars Gave my kids a new appreciation for utensils.......2001-08-19

This book takes a humorous, illustrated look at the history of eating habits. It educates, while simultaneously poking fun at ancient and modern affectations associated with the dinner table. It starts and ends with a primitive family who are just beginning to make use of fire.

It gives brief descriptions of eating customs and utensils in different cultures over the centuries. The evolving dining and feasting customs of medeval Europe are particularly amusing. Children will have a new appreciation for their spoons, knives and even forks after reading the author's amusing take on their introduction into our popular use.

This is a book that was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone in our family--from the six-year-old to the adults.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent manual for teaching decriptive embryology.......2001-05-02

I witnessed the birth of the first edition of this book when I was still a college student, and have seen its transformation to suit the needs of each new era. The book offers fundamental principles in descriptive embryology. I hoped to see more on the expperimental aspect of the subject. I also wished to see the embryology of more of the animal phyla (eg. fruit fly, zebra fish) included.

4 out of 5 stars An Embryology Lab Instructor's Comments.......2000-04-28

I have used this book in my course for four years. Typically one-hundred students per year are enrolled in my course. The quality of the photomicrographs is excellent. My only criticisms of the micrographs are that 1.) The sequence of the photomicrographs would be enhanced if they were arranged in a developmental sequence. Presently, the student must flip pages constantly to view all slides relevant to a particular developmental stage. 2.) There are not enough sagittal sections of the chick embryos. 3.) 96 hour chick embryos, instead of pig embryos might be an improvement. The text is good, although not quite as thorough as the Matthews lab manual was.

                    Book Description

According to Lieutenant General Bill Carr, an ex-Commander of Canada's Air Command, and himself a decorated WWII Spitfire pilot: "This book contains the most vivid, uncomplaining and honest descriptions I have ever read of what the WWII Bomber Command aircrews went through during the years 1939-1945 when they delivered no less than one-and-a-quarter million tons of bombs on Hitler's empire. From 1943 onward, the US Army Air Corps added a further three-quarter million tons to this total. And those young aircrew suffered incomparable losses."

It is the gripping life story of a decorated Air Navigator who, with his crew in a Lancaster, did a tour of operations in a Canadian squadron of RAF Bomber Command in WWII, spending nine months in the front lines. There are tales of night raids to Southeast Germany and 6 raids to Berlin. This milieu had up to 1 million personnel, 20,625 guns, 6,680 searchlights and about 400 fighters, a formidable barrier across Western Germany and around the targets, all with the prime purpose of frustrating the efforts to bomb, shooting down aircraft and killing crews being their preferred outcome. The tour terminated with bombing raids in France preparing for the invasion of Normandy. There are also interesting details of cultural life on the base, and in wartime Great Britain.

In addition, the life and times of growing up in New Brunswick, Canada in the 1920s are included, as well as stories of pre-war employment. There are also post-war stories of managing the family business, returning to the RCAF as a construction engineer, time as General Manager of the RCAF Association and proprietorship of Unique Decor Unlimited. Stories of retirement include much about worldwide travel.

Once you start reading, you'll find it so interesting you'll be reluctant to put it down!

                    3 out of 5 stars Cute Book.......2000-04-06

This is a very cute book, with legs attached, but it is really tiny - much smaller than I expected. It is a decent book for the price.

                      Book Description

1866. Wilson has been called the foremost Southern novelist of her time. She wrote nine books of which St. Elmo is her most well-known. The book begins: He stood and measured the earth; and the everlasting mountains were scattered, the perpetual hills did bow. These words of the prophet upon Shigionoth were sung by a sweet, happy, childish voice, and to a strange, wild, anomalous tune-solemn as the Hebrew chant of Deborah, and fully as triumphant.
