4 out of 5 stars Quite a mouth full.......2005-10-12

David Dary's book is unique among wildlife history sagas in that it provides exactly what the title suggests- " the full saga of the animal" We are treated to a natural history of the American Buffalo from its ancient ancestors up until the animal's current resurgence as a popular food source. In between, the reader is treated to well-composed and down right interesting images of the great bison herds of the midwest- (numbering in some 75 million), and mounds of bones and skulls left over from the great slaughter at the end of the nineteent century. We learn of the Native American reliance upon the great bison...and that without the use of bison as a food resource, the West might never had been won. Dary's book is a must for History buffs and general readers who want a well-written and competantly documented saga...of the animal that really should be the actual symbol of America.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you wanted to know about buffalo .......2005-03-21

This is one of the better and more complete books about the American Bison, aka buffalo. The author starts with the forerunners of the modern day buffalo, about 10,000 years ago, and works his way up to the present. Along the way he has chapters about the Indians and their use of the buffalo, the slaughter of the buffalo for its hides in the 1870s, and the rescue of the buffalo from extinction. He draws his material from an enormous number of sources, interspersing eye-witness acounts of the buffalo with scholarly observations. Several dozen photos, some of them historical, enhance the narrative.

The most interesting material in the book is the story of the buffalo's salvation from extinction. One authority estimated that 75 million buffalo lived in North America before the white man arrived, but only 800 buffalo survived in 1895. That small group has grown to a present population of about 100,000. The story of saving the buffalo tells of Eastern idealists and Western ranchers with characters like "Prairie Dog" Morrow, Charles Goodnight, and "Buffalo" Jones playing important roles.

This is a fine book of Western Americana and natural history which even includes a mini-cookbook for buffalo meat in an appendix.

5 out of 5 stars The Quintessential Western Animal.......2000-04-01

See a camel, think of the Sahara; see a kangaroo and think of Australia; see a buffalo and your mind will wander to the American West. No other animal is as emblematic of the region -- and (to the best of my experience) no other book offers as thorough an exploration of this animal as does The Buffalo Book. This is excellent reading in several fields: zoology, wildlife conservation, history, Native American culture, and -- by no means least -- plain old entertainment. If your literary tastes lean towards any or all of the above topics, don't miss The Buffalo Book!

3 out of 5 stars Good General Guide.......2007-05-07

This guide,as will all DK guides, provides good, basic information on the most popular sites in each area. I suspect that the material is reused from other DK gudies.

What this product lacks is good, detailed information about information that would be relevant to cruisers. For example, there are sections that deal with cruise selection, packing, etc.; but there is no information about the port facilities, distance from the port to the main part of town, local public transportation options, etc. Apparently, it is assumed that passengers will book shore excursions from the cruise line and not go off on their own.

This limits the guide's usefulness for those who would like to simply ramble through a town and get a little closer to the local culture. This is possible in many European ports, but not all. (Passengers will need some help getting from the port of Civitavecchia to Rome, but what about Naples?)

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2007-04-14

I bought this book hoping it would help plan our days in port for an upcoming trip. The book only dedicates about 2 to 4 pages per port of call. It does have a lot of pictures (which aren't bad and will be useful for identifying the sites), but overall it isn't much help and doesn't provide enough information to really be useful. You can find more information just on the internet.

          2 out of 5 stars What a disappointment.......2007-04-06

In the past, I've had great success with Eyewitness Travel Guides--but after taking the Cruise Guide to Europe and the Meditarranean with me on vacation, I was very disappointed. Heavy, shallow and lacking any useful port information, I found I left it in my room most of the time. I'd have preferred a guide that told me some useful logistics about each port (like how to get to any of the sites mentioned), and suggested itineraries for each location. I would not recommend this book at all.

          2 out of 5 stars Pretty boring.......2007-02-16

Its a pretty boring book, its exactly like the 2001 version...its 1 page longer than the 2001 version. So save your money and buy the older version or check it out at the library. I was expecting it to be more detailed, its just so basic and elementary. I was disappointed to say the least.

I'm very pleased with the Eyewitness Travel Guides in general, and specifically with the Europe & Mediterranean edition. I especially like the Survivors Guide and Traveler Needs sections. Other highlights include the wonderful graphics and color illustrations, compact size, and a unique ability to not only recommend the most important things to see and do, but also point out the unique and often off the beaten path places.

Known for their eye-catching design and generous use of color photos, DK Eyewitness guides are practically spilling over with all sorts of useful information for the traveler, and the cruise version is no different. The DK Eyewitness Guides Cruise Guide to Europe & the Mediterranean covers 23 countries and their sun-drenched ports of call. The guide is broken down into four sections including a chapter on the origins of cruise travel (from Cunard's Queen Elizabeth in the 1930s to the megaships of today) followed by a lengthy chapter on ports of call that describes in detail the dozens of Mediterranean ports catering to cruise ships. Not surprisingly, Italy, France, and the Greek Islands (with fabled resorts like Capri, St. Tropez, and Santorini) warrant the most space while lesser-known ports such as Amsterdam's The Hague, Malta's Valletta, and Croatia's Dubrovnik register just a few pages. North Africa and portions of the Middle East (Jerusalem, Beirut) are also covered. The Cruise Guide provides the nuts and bolt of cruising--everything from getting a cabin upgrade to avoiding motion sickness. The final chapter, a "Directory of Cruise Lines," lists more than 30 lines including Cunard, Royal Caribbean, Holland America, and Silversea. --Jill Fergus

          Book Description

5 out of 5 stars really good guidebook.......2001-09-17

I used this new guide while on a cruise in the Norwegian fjords. It was absolutely terrific - there was great information on Bergen and a wonderful diagram which showed the geology of the fjords. My next vacation will be to Portugal and the Mediterranean, and I'm using the guide to help plan my time in Lisbon and Seville. There seem to be plenty of useful tips on local markets and places of interest. And the beautiful pictures make the book a great souvenir.

          Sub-standard in every respect...

I really have enjoyed the previous Dk Eyrewitness Travel Guides offered for various cities and countries but the 'Guide To Europe & The Mediterranean' offers nothing for the 'cruise' passenger and the affected port of calls. Maps are missing and details about the actual port itself are near non-existant.

This book reflects the need that Dk Eyewitness Travel Guides had nothing on the shelves for the cruiseship passenger. What they accomplished was taking previous written information on the cities one might venture to from the ship and then detailing that city. Simply taken from previous land guides. Missing is port information, port sidetrips, alternative sightseeing and how to get around once in port.

Boring and without content. Very uninformative. See FROMMERS for real travel guides about the wonderful world of cruising.

A sub-standard cruise book in every respect.

                                  Book Description

An illuminating summary of our current understanding of the interactive role of dopamine and glutamate in psychiatric diseases and the therapeutic strategies and possibilities for future treatment. Among the new ideas presented are hypotheses on the role of dopamine and glutamate in aggression, the glutamate system in anxiety disorders, glutamate and neurodegeneration, and on the origin and progression of Parkinson's disease. Additional chapters offer novel insights into a variety of psychiatric diseases, including ADHD, stress, aggression, addiction, schizophrenia, depression, social phobias, dementias, bulimia, and neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. Each chapter summarizes the prevalence and symptoms of the disease and explains the involvement of dopamine and/or glutamate systems using the newer molecular approaches such as transgenic knockout or knockin mice and recent brain imaging techniques.

                                        Book Description

Graph Separators with Applications is devoted to techniques for obtaining upper and lower bounds on the sizes of graph separators - upper bounds being obtained via decomposition algorithms. The book surveys the main approaches to obtaining good graph separations, while the main focus of the book is on techniques for deriving lower bounds on the sizes of graph separators. This asymmetry in focus reflects our perception that the work on upper bounds, or algorithms, for graph separation is much better represented in the standard theory literature than is the work on lower bounds, which we perceive as being much more scattered throughout the literature on application areas. Given the multitude of notions of graph separator that have been developed and studied over the past (roughly) three decades, there is a need for a central, theory-oriented repository for the mass of results. The need is absolutely critical in the area of lower-bound techniques for graph separators, since these techniques have virtually never appeared in articles having the word `separator' or any of its near-synonyms in the title. Graph Separators with Applications fills this need.

By the standards of the 14th century, the writing style of the man who called himself Sir John Mandeville is so informal as to be nearly chummy: "He who wants to pass over the sea to Jerusalem, may go by many ways, both by sea and by land depending on the countries he comes from; many ways come to a single end. But do not think I shall tell of all the towns and cities and castles that men shall go by, for then I must make too long a tale of it." Historians remain skeptical as to whether the author really did journey to the Holy Land and Egypt, or hire himself out as a soldier to the Great Khan of China. Whatever the case, it is indisputable that he is one of the first modern travel writers, as we have come to know the genre, and that his book was considered authoritative in matters geographical throughout Europe--consulted by Leonardo da Vinci and Christopher Columbus alike.

                                          Book Description

Immediately popular when it first appeared around 1356, The Travels of Sir John Mandeville became the standard account of the East for several centuries—a work that went on to influence luminaries as diverse as Leonardo da Vinci, Swift, and Coleridge. Ostensibly written by an English knight, the Travels purport to relate his experiences in the Holy Land, Egypt, India, and China. Mandeville claims to have served in the Great Khan's army and to have journeyed to “the lands beyond”—countries populated by dog-headed men, cannibals, Amazons, and pygmies. This translation by the esteemed C.W.R.D. Moseley conveys the elegant style of the original, making this an intriguing blend of fact and absurdity, and offering wondrous insight into fourteenth- century conceptions of the world.

4 out of 5 stars A Classic Text of Medieval Literature.......2007-02-19

An important text regarding a 14th century european traveling east for holy pilgrimage. In the tradition of Marco Polo but often devolving into fantastic and imaginative descriptions of places, animals and people that are less than accurate. Interesting to sample the 14th century european unterstanding of the world. Note this Dover Publication version is abridged.

4 out of 5 stars anarchy and imagination.......2003-02-14

This is a fourteenth-century travel book telling us of the English "Sir" John Mandeville's real or imagined adventures in the East. The first part deals with the land of Egypt and the second with "the lands beyond" -. But did he actually ever leave England?? Did this Knighted author actually exist? Was he French? We'll never know, but this volume is a thorough compendium of medieval mythic lore, which he artfully blends in collage-form (very much in the fashion of the allegedly "post-modern" writing), which would be a great success throughout Europe for centuries to come. One of these pleased readers would be Christopher Columbus, who here fed his imagination on the passion for distant travels!

Together with this book I recommend the popular VOYAGE OF ST BRENDAN by Benedeiz, an earlier, twelfth-century text about the adventures of an Irish monk who never got tired of looking for fantastic islands on his tiny boat. The anarchy and imagination of the Middle-Ages always seems more fantastic when we read the original medieval authors directly.

This is a medieval best-seller for all.

4 out of 5 stars The curious history of John Mandeville.......2000-06-02

Sir John Mandeville was an Early-Renaissance writer of travel tales similar in content and style to his famous near-contemporary, Marco Polo. But history has judged these two men quite differently: whereas Marco Polo has become a household word, synonymous with bold explorations, Mandeville has been largely forgotten. But it was not always so.

During his lifetime, and for a couple of centuries afterwards, Mandeville was by far the more famous of the two. A copy of Mandeville - but not Polo - was in the possession of Leonardo da Vinci. More telling, about 300 manuscripts (hand-written copies) of Mandeville survive, compared to only about 70 of Polo.

What accounts for Mandeville's reversals of fortune?

Mandeville (or someone calling himself that) wrote his book about 1356, or shortly thereafter. Its original tile was "The Voyages and Travels of Sir John Mandeville, Knight," but is now generally known as "Travels of Sir John Mandeville." Polo's book, originally titled, "Descriptions of the World," came out about 1300. Whereas Mandeville wrote his book himself, Polo used the services of a professional writer, Rusticello, who in turn based the book on Polo's notebooks. (Mandeville is the better written.)

Standards of what constitutes a historical/geographic work have greatly changed. Both books -- but especially Mandeville -- contain a fascinating pastiche of facts (often distorted), impressions, opinions, and utterly fantastic claims. Reading Mandeville today, one is left with a bewildering farrago of National Geographic and supermarket tabloids.

As the Age of Exploration progressed, reliable geographic, historic, and economic data came to be more highly valued than fantastic tales. Since Polo's book was found to be the more reliable its reputation increased. Mandeville, on the other hand, came to be seen as a "teller of tall tales," a kind of Baron Munchhausen.

Indeed, today many historians question whether the man "Mandeville" really existed. Most believe that the person who wrote "Mandeville" never actually traveled to the placed he describes, and obtained his material from other sources. He took the identity of "Sir John Mandeville" to bolster his credibility. (Recently there have been attempts to "rehabilitate" Mandeville.)

What is their relevance today? Except in a narrow historical context, I would say that Mandeville is definitely the more interesting. What Mandeville lacks in historic and geographic accuracy, he more than makes up by his insight into what continually fascinates mankind - both then and now. A considerable portion of Mandeville can be fairly equated to today's Elvis sightings, or to the woman from Ohio who has the spaceman's baby. We are too immersed in our contemporary world to clearly see what is behind such phenomena; but looking back at Mandeville's world our vision greatly improves. Consider:

Mandeville tells of a society in which women often have snakes in their ...uhm...private parts. In order to protect themselves their men hire the services of professional "testers." As absurd as this all sounds, could Mandeville actually be describing some venereal disease?

Another example: could the various human monstrosities described by Mandeville (people with dog's heads, etc.) have modern counterparts in television's Star Trek?

The Penguin book would be improved by additional maps and illustrations -- unfortunately this would increase the cost.

                                            Book Description

The world of Sir John Mandeville was bounded by fantasy, superstition and dread. For most Europeans, knowledge of other countries was limited to tales brought back by the few people that had travelled beyond their borders. In the England of the fourteenth century, the vast majority would have viewed a visit to the next village as a major event. The idea of travelling to a neighbouring country would have been daunting; and to go beyond was almost unthinkable.

Sir John Mandeville was one of the intrepid few who ventured beyond, at least according to his own book. His account of his adventures first appeared in the late 1400s and became an instant "best-seller." His tales of devils in the Valley Perilous, men with eyes in their shoulders, and ants that filled empty jars on the backs of horses with gold fascinated Europe. He also learned that diamonds had gender and, with little encouragement, would breed while protecting their owner from all harm.

This is a fascinating reworking of one of the first "travelogues" in history, where the reader is invited to separate truth from fiction.

                                                            Book Description

In that land of Job there ne is no default of no thing that is needful to man's body. There be hills, where men get great plenty of manna in greater abundance than in any other country. This manna is clept bread of angels. And it is a white thing that is full sweet and right delicious, and more sweet than honey or sugar. And it cometh of the dew of heaven that falleth upon the herbs in that country. And it congealeth and becometh all white and sweet. And men put it in medicines for rich men to make the womb lax, and to purge evil blood. For it cleanseth the blood and putteth out melancholy. This land of Job marcheth to the kingdom of Chaldea.
