    Book Description

In Darwinism's Struggle for Survival Jean Gayon offers a philosophical interpretation of the history of theoretical Darwinism. He begins by examining the different forms taken by the hypothesis of natural selection in the nineteenth century (Darwin, Wallace, Galton) and the major difficulties that it encountered, particularly with regard to its compatibility with the theory of heredity. He then shows how these difficulties were overcome during the seventy years that followed the publication of Darwin's Origin of Species, and he concludes by analyzing the major features of the genetic theory of natural selection, as it developed from 1920 to 1960. This rich and wide-ranging study will appeal to philosophers and historians of science and to evolutionary biologists.

                        5 out of 5 stars Very accurate guide...extremely helpful.......2001-08-03

I used this book when I honeymooned in Europe last year. In Paris (where we spent most of our time), we stayed at one of the hotels the author recommended; we absolutely loved it! He gives places according to price, not always the cheapest place, and you can decide. The book is big, but it is easy and fun to read and very, very accurate and helpful. I had been to Europe before with the "Let's Go", and eventhough you travel on a budget, this book was just too cheap! What I liked about the Idiot's Guide is that it gives you options.

                        3 out of 5 stars Questionable.......2000-03-11

This book lists the La Scala Opera House as being in Venice, which is a big surprise since to the best of my knowledge it has never been moved out of Milan. Errors like this make me question the accuracy of other information in the book.

5 out of 5 stars By far the best guide for seeing the most popular sites.......1999-09-17

I went to Europe for 2 weeks this summer and took seven guide books with me including Rick Stevens book "Europe Through the Back Door". By far, the book that I referred to the most was "The Complete Idiots Guide . . ." Not only did it hit all of the major cities that I wanted to go to (London, Paris, Venice) but it told me important information: tourist traps to avoid, scams that take place, and money and time-saver advice, and the things not to miss. It is easy to read, and it is the only book that gives you several recommendations for both hotel and restuarants with price guides, phone numbers, and directions. The other tour books were just to general for me, I needed information on where to stay, where to eat, the currency rates, what to see, and what to avoid. I saved so much money staying in the big cities off the beaten path and not paying tourist prices. The time-savers where wonderful and I never waited in a single line in Paris for any attraction. For someone who is on a limited budget and limited time and wants to see the things that they have always heard about, this is the book. It is great for college students (me) and for those with quite a larger pocket. It even has some suggested itineries for those who want to go to Europe but don't know how to do and see it all.

                              Book Description

Molecular Microbiology Laboratory is designed to teach molecular biology techniques to upper level undergraduates majoring in the life sciences. An extremely detailed lab preparation manual for teaching assistants accompanies the lab book and contains a general discussion of scientific writing and critical reading, as well as detailed instructions for preparation and peer review of lab reports. Each experimental unit is accompanied by a number of additional writing exercises based upon primary journal articles. The studies in these articles employ the techniques that the students are learning in the lab exercises, which reinforces their understanding of the material. These are techniques that students in any biological science will need to know, making this manual applicable to any life science curriculum.

i Committees, Agendas and Voting /i surveys the formal literature on committee voting that builds on the pioneering work of Duncan Black and Robin Farquharson, literature which has developed within the framework of economic theory, game theory, social choice theory and spatial voting theory. br The text is technically precise but at the same time accessible, and is carried forward by numerous examples. The chapters focus on vote counting rules, voting agendas, voter preferences, sincere and sophisticated voting strategies, solution sets, voting outcomes, agendas control, and agenda formation. The author himself has made prior research contributions to a number of these topics. br What happens when one group of individuals must collectively choose, by means of voting, one alternative out of a larger set of alternatives, concerning which they may have conflicting opinions? This is the voting problem. Committee voting is voting of the parliamentary type, in which collective choice proceeds through a

                                    Book Description

In recent years, the usual optimization techniques, which have proved so useful in microeconomic theory, have been extended to incorporate more powerful topological and differential methods, and these methods have led to new results on the qualitative behavior of general economic and political systems. These developments have necessarily resulted in an increase in the degree of formalism in the publications in the academic journals. This formalism can often deter graduate students. The progression of ideas presented in this book will familiarize the student with the geometric concepts underlying these topological methods, and, as a result, make mathematical economics, general equilibrium theory, and social choice theory more accessible.

                                    Book Description

The revolution in social scientific theory and practice known as nonlinear dynamics, chaos, or complexity, derived from recent advances in the physical, biological, and cognitive sciences, is now culminating with the widespread use of tools and concepts such as praxis, fuzzy logic, artificial intelligence, and parallel processing. By tracing a number of conceptual threads from mathematics, economics, cybernetics, and various other applied systems theoretics, this book offers a historical framework for how these ideas are transforming the social sciences. Daneke goes on to address a variety of persistent philosophical issues surrounding this paradigm shift, ranging from the nature of human rationality to free will. Finally, he describes this shift as a path for revitalizing the social sciences just when they will be most needed to address the human condition in the new millennium.
Systemic Choices describes how praxis and other complex systems tools can be applied to a number of pressing policy and management problems. For example, simulations can be used to grow a number of robust hybrid industrial and/or technological strategies between cooperation and competition. Likewise, elements of international agreements could be tested for sustainability under adaptively evolving institutional designs. Other concrete applications include strategic management, total quality management, and operational analyses.
This exploration of a wide range of technical tools and concepts will interest economists, political scientists, sociologists, psychologists, and those in the management disciplines such as strategy, organizational behavior, finance, and operations.
Gregory A. Daneke is Professor of Technology Management, Arizona State University, and of Human and Organization Development, The Fielding Institute.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for senior managers & organizational consultants!.......2000-05-25

It has been a long time since I read anything that truly inspired me on systems. Dr. Daneke's ability to translate complicated technical concepts into readable understandable material is an asset for scholars, managers, and consultants alike. He writes clearly and eloquently without diminshing the technical nature of the subject matter. He is right on target about the ineffectiveness of traditional linear methods we currently use to analyze and predict everything from operations research to macro economic theory. I love the idea of using phase planes as a nonlinear approach for modeling economic choices and strategic planning. The traditional measures we use are obsolete. I have already recommended this book to faculty colleagues and clients. It is a must read for senior managers and organizational consultants.

God Sends Sunday is the first of three groundbreaking novels by Arna Bontemps, arguably one of the most versatile black writers of the twentieth century. Bontemps inaugurated his long and remarkable career in the Harlem Renaissance era when he was awarded three poetry prizes and established lifetime kinship with such noted figures as Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, and Claude McKay.

God Sends Sunday was inspired by Arna Bontemps's great-uncle Buddy, whose down-home folk spirit animates this racy story of Little Augie, an irrepressible black jockey of the romantic 1890s. As a frail, undersized youngster, Little Augie leaves his grown sister's home and with luck and charm rises to fame and fortune on the Mississippi River racetrack circuit. But sudden wealth and hopeless rivalry for a beautiful woman change Little Augie's character and set him on a path of self-destruction.

Born in 1902 in Alexandria, Louisiana, Bontemps died at Nashville in 1973. He established a legacy of some forty published works for adults, juveniles, and children, including histories, fiction, folklore, and biographies.

Bontemps collaborated with Countee Cullen to bring these qualities to a controversial and spectacular production of God Sends Sunday, called St. Louis Woman, originally performed on Broadway in 1946.

This work by an important author of the Harlem Renaissance focuses on African American folk life, folklore, and folk music (Blues) during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. It is a delightful first work of fiction by the author. The character of the protagonist is based on that of his Uncle Buddy, who inspired his love for the folk tradition.
