5 out of 5 stars Attenborough : A True Gentle Man.......2007-07-11

David Attenborough's 'Life on Air' gives a fascinating insight into the work of a true gentle man of the airwaves.

The book is entirely readible with several unexpected laughs in store.

A master at understating his own achievements, Attenborough tells the story of his work with the BBC, spanning an incredible fifty years. Often facing the worst inconveniences of tropical insects for days on end to get illusive shots of nature's wonders, he has tirelessly laboured to bring precious knowledge to the world of the richness of our planet.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Travel the world with THE documentary presenter/producer/narrator of the natural world.......2006-01-12

While mentioning several highpoints in his childhood, David Attenborough's book mainly covers his working career upon graduation from university. Most people will be familiar with his animal and natural world documentaries from the late 80s onwards. I was surprised that he almost fell into the BBC and that he first started his involvement in natural history in the 1950s. He covers in great detail the problems encountered in broadcasting live from the studio during the infancy of television and the limitations of filming in the wild with basic equipment. David Attenborough, besides being famous for his documentaries, is also one of TV's pioneers. For a long time as well, he was senior management within the BBC and largely responsible for a lot of the programming that that boradcaster produced in the 60s and 70s. This surprised me as I was only familiar with his later documentary work.

Told with a lot of humour, the reader will meet all manner of fascinating people and animals in every corner of the world. This man has done more in his life than any of us will ever do and he has shared it with us on screen and in this marvellous book.

Book Description

For fifty years David Attenborough has entertained, educated, and generally enchanted millions worldwide with his pursuit of the secrets of life in its many guises. For such groundbreaking television series as Life on Earth, The Private Life of Plants, and The Life of Birds, he has traveled to the ends of the earth to give viewers their first (and often only) close look at some of nature's wonders--from the great wildebeest migration to the blooming of desert cacti. Now Attenborough invites readers to travel with him once more, as he reflects on a life at least as interesting as any he's managed to capture on camera.

Life on Air begins when, at twenty-four, Attenborough throws over what looks to be a staid future as a "gentleman publisher" for an uncertain position in the BBC's fledgling television service. An adventure in itself (with primitive equipment and unpredictable personalities), broadcasting work involves the Cambridge-educated naturalist in hilarious attempts to improve the upstart Talks Department. Then the discovery of a coelacanth fish off the Comoro Islands offers him his first chance as a producer, and his career introducing wildlife to the public takes off in earnest.

From his first expedition--a junket to Sierra Leone to find the elusive Bald-headed Rock Crow--to his most recent, Attenborough conducts readers on a life journey as instructive as it is enthralling. Rich with insights into nature and behind-the-scenes glimpses into broadcasting history, it is also filled with adventure and humor. Attenborough's storytelling powers are legendary, and they don't fail him as he recounts how he came to stand in rat-infested caves in Venezuela, confront wrestling crocodiles, abseil down a rainforest tree in his late sixties, and wake with the lioness Elsa sitting on his chest. His story ranges from British Guinea to the Zambesi, from Borneo to Madagascar, from the darkest depths of caves to the canopies of the loftiest trees. With quiet erudition, searching curiosity, and generous wit, the world's best-known and most beloved naturalist documents a life that reflects his changing time and our natural world as well as his own irrepressible character.

5 out of 5 stars Attenborough at his best - insightful & entertaining.......2003-07-09

I love this book. As a kid I used to sit glued to the TV watching Attenborough's programmes, such as the series 'Life on Earth' and countless others, bringing exotic places and the wonders of natural world into our living rooms. This book is an autobiography focused on David Attenborough's long and unparalleled BBC career starting from the birth of the TV medium in the 40's and 50's up untill today. What shines through in this book is vintage Attenborough: A true passion for his vocation, and an indefatigable desire to bring the most fascinating aspects of natural history to our TV screens. In a time when a lot of TV is hopelessly pre-digested and bland, Attenborough stands out more than ever, and so does this book. Read it an enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Simply a great book by a fascinating person.......2002-12-20

I have watched David Attenboroughs TV documentaries for years and have consistently found them to be unrivalled in their ability to bring the subject matter to life in a way no other presenter can. This book maintains that tradition. As you read the book you travel with the author and what a trip it is. He is an immensely likable person who has led a fascinating life. The book is also well constructed, highly readable and offers a host of insights into both the author and the natural world. I would strongly recommend it to you.

Book Description

Above the Sea: Expat in China is a personal account of the author's experiences living, working, and traveling in China. It is a valuable resource for anyone destined for China for business or pleasure. Living in Shanghai with his wife, a native of Guangzhou, the author shares insights into a dynamic and complex nation. Besides Shanghai, the couple have visited more than two dozen cities, towns and villages in China, from Harbin in the far North to Guangzhou in the South, and as far west as Xi'an, the ancient capital. In Above the Sea: Expat in China, the author has managed to be both informative and entertaining. The book contains his impressions of the challenges, the friendships, and sometimes the frustrations of living in a country that is both ancient and modern, and always changing.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Helpful Orientation to Working in China.......2005-10-23

I bought several books about doing business in China, but none gave me the detailed sense of how living and working in China would be as "Above the Sea". I could identify with the author and felt that his impressions and observations would be similar to mine. It gave me great comfort and stimulated my excitement as my husband and I transitioned to living in China. As I read it while planning our move, I was continually asking my husband to listen as I read aloud interesting, vivid descriptons of Bainbridge's work and travel in China. Now I am teaching in Xi'an China, and writing my own observations home. My idea that Bainbridge's impressions would be similar to my own has been borne out.
"Above the Sea" is a collection of Bainbridge's communication with friends and family in the U.S. while he was abroad in 2002, as well as some chapters recounting his thoughts, feelings and experiences. While working for a Chinese company in Shanghai, Bainbridge and his Chinese wife, Starry traveled to many other cities, including Harbin, Beijing, and Xi'an. His descriptions of Xi'an were right on. His chapter on "Warts and All" describes how sometimes the differences in Chinese society are jarring - down to the taste of toothpaste, and the direction of light switches. He states that there is so much negative press about China in the U.S. that he hopes to write a more balanced picture. I, too, tire of the paranoia and cynicism in the U.S. media reports on China, and long for the real news of people of all sorts living their lives in China and around the world. Bainbridge provides that human perspective about China.
I recommend this book as an entertaining and informative read for anyone moving to China, or for anyone enjoys a good personal travelogue.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, worth buying, but not what I expected.......2004-09-28

Having just been assigned to an overseas position in Shanghai for three years (we depart December, 2004), I was excited to see this title and book description. The book is well written, funny at times, and has given me some good ideas for trips my family will take in China during our stay.

My overall rating for this book would be 3.5 out of 5.0, if I could give that, and my main issues are as follows:

* Throughout the book, the author has pretty much nothing good to say about the US. I have lived overseas before (four years in Poland), and know many Americans who have also had expat assignments in new countries. In the vast majority of cases, one appreciates many aspects of the new culture they live in, as well as appreciates other aspects of the American culture they left, and perhaps took for granted. The author comes across as disliking the US, which at times is a little annoying. It is not a political thing, but there must certainly be something he missed in America other than his friends.

* This may be more of a definitional thing, but when I use the word "expat" I think of a foreigner working a different country (usually a manager or 'expert'). As such, I was a little disappointed that "Expat in China" mentioned so very little about the author's work experience in China.

If someone were to be visiting to China for an extended period or moving there, I would still say buy this book. It was, for the most part, an enjoyable read, and I am sure the experiences my family will have visiting some of the places mentioned off the beaten path will more than cover the cost. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars It is a wonderful book!.......2004-06-23

By author's eyes,we can see a new face of China,a developing country. What author wrote is a real Shanghai. From this book, you can feel China's pulse.

2 out of 5 stars not bad; but certainly not great, either........1999-03-27

This was an interesting book. It tried to give you the entire history of frankenstein. This means how it afects you in every way since it was written. A nice idea, but not well written. It is long and a little boring. It is also repetitive. It reads more like a phone book, than a non-fiction literary work. I was not pleased at all. In fact, I would not purchase anything else by this author(Mr. Jon Turney) ever again. I thought he could have been a lot more interesting and exciting, if he had really tried.

          Book Description

This book deals in a simple manner with the numerical solution of parabolic partial differential (diffusion) equations as they appear in electroanalytical chemistry, but extends also to the more sophisticated and efficient techniques. Only a basic familiarity with mathematics is assumed. It is intended both as an elementary text for the beginner as well as a reference for the more experienced. It incorporates the newer methods such as orthogonal collocation, unequal intervals, hopscotch, Runge-Kutta integration of semidiscretised systems of equations, and implicit boundary value calculation, which is required for the Crank-Nicolson technique to be effective in this field, where derivative boundary conditions are the rule. This second edition has been updated extensively to take into account recent developments in the area. It also deals squarely with the problems resulting from homogenous chemical reactions. With the help of this book and its many programming examples, any electrochemist should be able to learn to use the technique quickly in its simpler forms and will hopefully be stimulated to learn about the more difficult methods later.

              Book Description

Multibody Mechanics and Visualization is designed to appeal to computer-savvy students who will acquire significant skills in mathematical and physical modelling of mechanical systems in the process of producing attractive computer simulations and animations. The emphasis here is on general skills with all-round applicability rather than the ability to solve “cooked-up” problems. The approachable style and clear presentation of this text will help you grasp the essentials of: modeling the kinematics and dynamics of arbitrary multibody mechanisms; formulating a mathematical description of general motions of such mechanisms; implementing the description in a computer-graphics application for the animation/visualization of the movement. Multibody Mechanics and Visualization plays down the prediction of dynamics by formal analysis of differential equations while preparing its students to perform such analyses with greater understanding later. The text relies on the following principles for effective tuition: an inductive approach to learning - discerning general patterns from particular observations; repetition and review of important principles to reinforce your learning through numerous examples; obvious visual guidance that shows you at a glance which information you need for different levels of understanding; computer tools, visual representations and elements of active learning integrated into the text to suit the way you want to learn. Supported in the text in parallel with the theoretical presentation is the simulation and animation application Mambo. In contrast with existing commercially available educational software tools, Mambo requires detailed input from you in order to define the specific geometry of a mechanism as well as the differential equations governing its behavior while allowing you to visualize the results of your efforts. The Mambo toolbox enables you to provide these specifications for mechanisms that would pose insurmountable algebraic challenges to manual calculation. With these tools, you will be able to see the implications of decisions made throughout the modeling process, to check your mathematical analyses, and to enjoy the fruit of your labor! Mambo can be freely downloaded from the author's website and runs under any version of MS Windows ®. The toolbox is compatible with the Maple software environment and the Matlab ® extended symbolic toolbox.

I purchased this book for my seventeen year-old daughter, an avid reader of this genre and classics in general. Her reaction was very positive and was delighted that it also contained other work by Tennyson.

5 out of 5 stars Not for the casual reader.......2006-11-14

The style of writting within this book differs greatly from what the casual reader is probably used to not only because of the poem format but the language as well. The Medieval style of speech is carried into this book and older words we dont hear any more are used as well. It takes a page or two to understand the flow. I did find this book interesting and very useful for my research into the Arthurian Legends but would not recommend it for casual reading.

              5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2006-08-02

This book is certainly a classic in all regards. I feel that every man alive in this day and age should read this to revive the idea of chilvary and bravery. Perhaps, it would alleviate some of the problems of our nation.

5 out of 5 stars Idylls of the king.......2006-06-26

It was outstanding! One of the few authors that went into detail about some of the other heros of the Table Round! With a wonderful, but heart-breaking end to the one and true king.

5 out of 5 stars The gorgeous afterglow of Romanticism.......2006-02-23

The eloquence of several previous reviewers is proof enough of this volume's poetic power. And while I agree with the hesitation of many over the staunch Victorian morality which infuses the poetry, I find myself admiring it all the same, without necessarily agreeing with it. Here is a man's deeply felt vision, a statement of his times, drawing upon the lush sweep of the English Romantics & tempered by the frowning propriety of his own world. It's a complex & delicate balance, which should collapse of its own paradoxical weight ... and yet, the fusion works superbly, resulting in some of the most stirring & beautiful narrative poetry ever written. Tennyson's lyric gift is rich, evocative & fluent. In addition, he brings remarkable psychological nuance & insight to his work. In many ways, it's a summation of his age, a farewell to an older world whose values are worth remembering & preserving, as a darker age dawns. And in the end, above all else, it's tremendously readable! Highly recommended!

                      Book Description

An Adventure for Character Levels 1-3 Remember the golden days of role playing, when adventures were underground, NPCs were there to be killed, and the finale of every dungeon was the dragon on the 20th level? Well, those days are back. Dungeon Crawl Classics feature bloody combat, intriguing dungeons, and no NPCs who aren't meant to be killed. Each adventure is 100% good, solid dungeon crawl, with the monsters you know, the traps you fear, and the secret doors you know must be there somewhere.

This is a 3.5-edition update of the ENnie-recognized best-seller that started the Dungeon Crawl Classics line! In Idylls of the Rat King, goblin bandits are once again attacking the silver caravans, killing innocent miners and stealing cargo. The goblins have taken up residence in an abandoned mine northwest of Silverton. Someone must get rid of them. But this is no ordinary abandoned mine. It was deliberately barricaded generations ago when the Gannu family, founders of Silverton, discovered an unspeakable evil on its lowest levels. And these are no ordinary goblins, for the curse of the Gannu family courses through their veins...

This world-neutral, stand-alone adventure is completely new, not a reprint. It uses the 3.5 edition of the d20 rules set, and is fully compatible with the world's most popular role playing game.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Evocation of Arthurian Legends.......1998-09-24

After many, many years of good intentions I finally read Tennyson's Idylls of the King. What a pleasure and delight. The poetry is impressive, and the depiction of the Round Table is epochal. I have also compared it to some of Mallory. While Mallory established the standard for the Arthurian legend (in English, at any rate), Tennyson's poetry is far more impressive. The stories themselves seem more impressive in Tennyson's sure hands. Unfortunately, I also made the mistake of watching "Camelot" on video recently; what a travesty. Guenevere is referred to as Ginny, Sir Lancelot is called Lance, and the over-all Hollywood approach is debasing and embarrassing. One could be turned off from Camelot forever as a result of this atrocious film. Let us give praise for Alfred Lord Tennyson's Idylls of the King. It is magnificent!

                            Book Description

Tennyson interprets the Arthurian myth as an epic poem, and his tales of Camelot soar to remarkable imaginative heights to trace the birth of a king; the founding, fellowship, and decline of the Round Table; and the king's inevitable departure. Encompassing romance, heroism, duty, and conflict, Tennyson's poetry charts the rise and fall of a legendary society.
