Revealing Chicago: An Aerial Portrait
ASIN: 0801859352 |
Book Description
In Disarming the Prairie, noted landscape photographer Terry Evans offers haunting and hopeful images of the impact of America's military-industrial complex on the environment and the transformation of a former military base into a unique nature preserve and public recreation area. Located 40 miles southwest of downtown Chicago, the Joliet Army Arsenal was once the world's largest TNT factory. Wartime security and safety measures demanded that the Joliet installation be surrounded by 19,000 acres of open lands -- farmlands, meadows, wetlands, and forest. Abandoned by the post-Cold War era military, the munitions plant and its vast prewar farmland and wilderness setting now has a new purpose. Inspired by the vision and efforts of environmentalists, preservationists, and Chicago-area residents, the federal government in 1997 transferred the land from the Department of the Army to the U.S. Forest Service and created Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie.
In her photographs of the Midewin Prairie, Terry Evans captures this moment of transformation, contrasting the decayed monuments of twentieth-century warfare with the pastoral beauty and historic structures preserved within the boundaries of the former installation. Through her evocative images of the arsenal (abandoned bunkers, disused railway tracks, crumbling factory buildings and offices) and the countryside around the base (tallgrass prairie, a blackbird's nest, grazing cattle, a meandering creek, as well as a prehistoric burial mound and a Civil War-era fieldstone fence), Evans explores one of this country's most troubling and least understood legacies -- the militarization of the American landscape. In his informative introduction, Tony Hiss notes that installations similar to the Joliet Arsenal were built across the United States during the Second World War and at the height of the Cold War, eventually occupying 30 million acres of land. Approximately 20 million acres (an area the size of Austria) remain under military control today, and the debate over what to do with the sprawling munitions factories for which the post-Cold War military has no further use has begun in earnest. Joliet's transformation to Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie will serve as a model for future conversion of military lands into civilian use, and Terry Evans's photographic record of this change provides hope that renewal is possible.

New Edition of Plants of the Chicago Region.......2002-05-07
Since the previous reviewer wrote, Mr. Swink passed away. The publisher is working on a new edition, which is expected to be out in summer or fall of 2003. There are only a few copies left of the current reprint. I'm waiting anxiously for the new edition.
The Bible of plants in the Chicago region.......1998-11-02
Probably the most authoritative guide to plants that grow in and around Chicago. The entry for each plant even contains a map showing where it was found. This is the capstone work for Chicago's foremost Horticulturist.

Great information!.......2005-08-20
I have been on 15 cruises, and this book is right on. I have read alot of books about crusing and if you have never been on a cruise or have been on many, you will enjoy this book. Gives you little tips and tricks and just explains how things all work on the cruise ship and in the ports you visit. Everything from the food, what to wear, how to pack, the staff and entertainment.
Bon Book!.......2001-06-09
This is an amazing find. It has everything a rookie or a veteran to cruising will ever need. I found it very helpful in planning my sixth cruise. But, I have also passed it on to first time cruisers who couldn't be more thankful. Detailed descriptions on all types of cruise ships, ports of call, shore excursions. And helpful hints on how to save $$ on booking, why to use a travel agent and what to pack. I wish I could find a book that was similiar, I've read this one too many times...
GREAT FOR THE FIRST TIME CRUISER!.......2000-03-20
I found this book to be excellent. I read it cover to cover before my husband and I cruised last year. I felt like I already had a jump start when we boarded our boat. I liked reading about all of the boats and that was how we decided on the cruise we took. The chapters were divided so you could pick the ones that contained information that was vital to you. We are going on yet another cruise with our children so I went back and reread the Chapter that is about cruising with kids. I would recommend this book to anyone even thinking about taking a cruise vacation.
CRUISERS ARE NOT IDIOTS.......1999-09-23
This book is too big and covers too little that the average first- or multiple-time cruiser wants or needs to know.
Much of the information -- particularly about ships -- is time-sensitive and outdated. This may be corrected in the next edition, but will probably by out-dated by the time the new and improved version "ships".
It's hard to figure out why "Cruise Lingo Word-Find" ... one of those puzzles where you draw lines around particular terms, was worth a page in the book. Many of the 446 pages are what might be called, kindly, "filler."
The set-in about meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous was particularly grating. Any member of AA knows that "Friends of Bill W" is the buzz term to be found in the ship's newspaper or anywhere else members might meet.
The tips on tipping are quite off-base. The idea of tipping one-half to either a room steward or a waiter for a child makes no sense. Anyone with children knows that they're more trouble than the average adult ... and they do take up a seat in the dining room ... and probably want to order from a kids' menu. Tipping half for more work?
Further, the author states that the tip exceptions are "ritzy Seabourne and Radisson" then goes on to say that a cruiser OUGHT to tip on Radisson?
This book would have benefitted from a good copy editor and a first-class fact-checker, to say nothing of an expert in design.
Overall, this is not a well-researched or well-presented book.
There are a few good bits of information included, but paying for the book might put the buyer in the "Idiot" class.
An excellent overview of cruise travel for the novice........1998-10-03
An enjoyable introduction to the world of cruise travel, this book provides a thorough overview for those of us new to this form of indulgence. I have read Cruse Travel magazine and various cruise travel guides, in anticipation of our first cruise. This book offered the first detailed step-by-step approach to making all the important decisions.
The contents covers seven area: making the decision, tips on discounts and deals, the cruise lines and their ships, cruise planning practicalities, the ports of embarkation, what to expect of the cruise experience, visiting the ports of call, and wrapping up your cruise.
I highly recommend this to anyone planning their first (and subsequent) cruise.

Customer Reviews:
Review of Radiochemistry and Nuclear Methods .......2004-12-19
Although this text was written 1991 it still contains many relevant topics to the field of radiochemistry. Broad topics from nuclear dating methods to nucleosynthesis in star are covered. The text is written for the beginner or "non-specialist" within this field and provides a wide survey for the reader. There is not an emphasis on high-level mathematics or first principles of theoretical physics, the book does provides a clear, "first look" at radioactivity, the principles of radioactive decay, and nuclear reactions, as well as:
* Modern radiochemical instrumentation
* Nuclear dating methods
* Methods for the production of radionuclides
* The use of tracers and nuclear methods of analysis
* The origin of the chemical elements
* The biological effects of radiation
It could be said that although many of the areas addressed are redressed in other relevant texts of its kind, it still provides a useful addition to any serious scientist within the field of radiochemistry.
Good Textbook!.......2000-07-25
Radiochemistry and Nuclear Methods of Analysis is a book based on lectures on that subject. It has been written in a way that is understandable and easy to follow by the Chemistry or Physics student but also by the reader who has never been exposed to this subject before. It is well organized providing the reader information of the discovery of radioactivity and the contributions in this field, the concepts, the applications and the instrumentation used. The text is clear and concise. The text also provide additional reference for the reader who wants to continue reading more about a particular topic given that this book is a survey of the applications of radiochemistry. The tables, illustrations, graphs are easy to follow and the equations are well explained. This book is recommended for those who are interested in this area of Chemistr that usually is briefly mentioned during a General Chemistry course.

Book Description
Beginning with an in-depth presentation of a general mathematical model, the authors proceed to outline specific applications, extending the developed method to special harmonic problems of mechanics for conjugated domains. All applications are illustrated with numerical examples.
This unique reference work offers a method of deriving exact solutions to the biharmonic equation in the context of elasticity problems. The authors propose a number of new solutions, the like of which have never before been outlined in Western literature.
Book Description
The latest edition of this highly praised anthology of ancient Egyptian literature offers fresh translations of all the texts as well as some twenty-five new entries, including writings from the late literature of the Demotic period at the end of classical Egyptian history. The book also includes an extensive bibliography.
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-07-09
W.K. Simpson is a great writer and translator, and this is one of the best books of Egyptian stories out there. Egypt boasts a large canon of fiction, and this has much of the best that has been translated to date.
Readable translations of selected texts from Ancient Egypt.......2007-06-22
Having read with interest Miriam Lichtheim's Ancient Egyptian Literature - Volume I: The Old and Middle Kingdoms, I debated for some time whether to follow that up with her second Volume (The New Kingdom), or to get this book. My decision came down to whether I should continue with the translations of an author with whom I was familiar, or whether I should opt for what I thought were later translations by a different group of authors. It wasn't until I received the book that I learned that the first edition of this book had been published a little earlier than the translations of Professor Lichtheim, and that, 21 of the 57 texts included in this work, were either included in Volume I of her work, or were included in The Ancient Near East - Volume I - Anthology of Texts & Pictures by James Pritchard which I had read some time before that. So inadvertently I had given myself the opportunity to compare the translations styles of several authors. Considering the difficulties which scholars have in reading these texts and the ambiguities in attempting to translate them, this turned out to be quite a useful choice.
In his introduction, the editor, Professor Simpson, explains that this third edition of the book contains a number of texts not included in the earlier editions, and that the texts were selected on "the basis of literary merit or pretensions thereto" with the contents arranged according to type rather than date. He goes on to explain the characteristics of each genre, the considerable problems in translating Egyptian texts, conventions used in determining specific reading of the texts, the methodology used in the translations, and some details of earlier translations by other scholars. There is an extensive 65 page bibliography at the back of the book which includes a general section, followed by a bibliography for each of the selected texts.
The scholars whose translations are included in the book are Professor Simpson himself , Robert K Ritner, Vincent A. Tobin, and Edward F. Wente, Jr. The translated texts are subdivided into the nine sections:
Part I - Narratives and Tales of Middle Egyptian Literature (4 texts)
Part II - Late Egyptian Stories (9 texts)
Part III - Instructions, Lamentations, and Dialogues (13 texts)
Part IV - From the Religious Literature (6 texts)
Part V - Songs and Royal Hymns (2 texts)
Part VI - Royal Stelae (9 texts)
Part VII - Autobiographies (4 texts)
Part VIII - Scribal Traditions (2 texts)
Part IX - Demotic Literature (8 texts)
Each text is preceded by an introduction by the translator which explains the nature and content of the text, and there are extensive notes which expand on the meaning of certain phrases and explain where there are ambiguities in interpreting the text.
Also in his introduction, Professor Simpson discusses two main approaches to translations - one being to attempt to render an Egyptian sentence so that its characteristics are retained in English, which often makes for a rather artificial translation "a kind of language not represented in everyday speech", - another being an attempt to render the sense which might give a smoother translation which can "result in a paraphrase and leads to interpretative retelling". His team of translators have attempted to a strike a compromise between the two, and in this I think they succeed very well, as the translations are generally easy to read and understand.
My prime motivation in wanting to read the Egyptian texts is gain first hand knowledge of some on the primary sources of information and to compare these with histories of Egypt which often rely heavily on scholarly interpretations of these texts. In other words. I wanted to be able to judge for myself the validity of some of the underlying assumptions which scholars must make when dealing with the political details of imperfectly documented ancient civilizations. For me the most interesting were the texts of the Middle and Late Egyptian Tales; Instructions and Lamentations; Autobiographies; and Demotic texts, even those which I had read in other translations. The texts of various royal stelae included in this book also make fascinating reading, particularly The Victory Stela of Piye, which was completely new to me.
In comparing translations. while I found those of Professor Lichtheim to be a bit more difficult to follow - probably because she prefers to adopt the first approach outlined by Professor Simpson - in general, I found her introductions to be the more informative, with more extensive notes explaining the difficulties in the reading and translation of the texts.
In summary, I am very happy to have bought this book, and I recommend it to others who may be considering purchasing it. I believe that the selected texts are generally representative of the various genre and types of preserved texts, and do provide a useful source (and reference) for the modern accounts of the history of Ancient Egypt
Ian Myles Slater on: Revised, Expanded, Almost a New Book.......2004-06-04
This is officially the third edition of a volume of translations originally published in hardcover in 1972, and reprinted with expansions in paperback in 1973. That second version remained in print, with a change of covers (from orange to black, and with different art), for over two decades. Its 352 pages contained contributions by R.O. Faulkner and E.F. Wente, Jr., in addition to those by the editor, William Kelly Simpson. Although less comprehensive than Miriam Lichtheim's three-volume "Ancient Egyptian Literature" (University of California Press), it included material not found in that collection, and the quality and the reliability of the translations was at least equally notable. The only defect was that additions to the original selections had been shoved in at the back, instead of grouped with similar works, according to the original plan of the volume.
There have been several new collections of translations in recent years, notably those by John L. Foster and R.B. Parkinson, and I am inclined to consider this "third edition" among them. The selection of material has been changed, Faulkner's selections have been dropped, and two new contributors, Robert K. Ritner and Vincent A. Tobin, have been added. The volume now runs over 600 pages, and only a small portion of the difference is due to greatly expanded bibliographies and generous layout.
Mainly for the benefit of those who know something about ancient Egypt -- especially those familiar with the older version of the book, or the Lichtheim, Foster, or Parkinson collections -- the contents now include:
Narratives and Tales of Middle Egypt (four stories, all familiar, but now based on the latest textual editions); Late Egyptian Stories (nine stories); Instructions, Lamentations, and Dialogues (thirteen texts); "From the Religious Literature," (selections from the Pyramid Texts, the Coffin Texts, and the Book of the Dead -- the "Negative Confession" from Chapter 125 -- and The Hymn to the Aten, Penitential Hymns, and the "Book of the Heavenly Cow," which is at once a myth, a spell, and funerary text); Songs and Royal Hymns (a cycle in honor of Senwosret III, and "The Love Songs and The Song of the Harper"); Royal Stelae (nine texts of widely varying dates); Autobiographies (four texts); Scribal Traditions ("The Satire on the Trades" and selected school exercises); and, finally, the entirely new section of Demotic Literature, including stories (Setne Khaemuas among them), prophecies, fables, and a late Instruction text ('Onchsheshonqy, including the frame story) (eight items).
The useful set of illustrations surviving from the first edition remains unchanged, but has been relocated toward the front of the volume.
Anyone with a serious interest in Ancient Egypt will want to have this book available. Beginners may find it all a bit overwhelming at first, but the introductory material and concise annotations should be helpful, and, with a very little effort from the reader, the stories, poems, and proverbs should begin to speak for themselves. It is clearly intended for serious adult readers, but I was in High School when I read the old 1923 Erman translation of "The Literature of the Ancient Egyptians," in Blackman's 1927 translation from the German, and this is far easier to digest, as well as a lot more up-to-date.
(Come to think of it, Erman/Blackman was probably in the 1966 paperback edition, as "The Ancient Egyptians: A Sourcebook," for which Simpson supplied an introduction and bibliographic notes -- I suppose I've been reading his work even longer than I remembered.)
The only real complaint I would make is that the cover too closely resembles the later printings of the second edition, which likewise featured a pharaonic bust on a black background; if I hadn't seen the thick spine, I wouldn't have looked at the back, seen "Third Edition" in somewhat subdued lettering, and taken time to read part of Simpson's Introduction, which gave me a reason to buy it.
