Everyone likes a success story, and the bald eagle in recent years certainly qualifies as one. Environmental writer Bruce E. Beans finds enlightening stories of eagles thriving, from dozens of birds in former DDT-laden lands in New Jersey to 1,750 bald eagles counted in an hour in Alaska. But there's more than just counting birds in this work. Beans chronicles the story of some of those who have worked to save this national symbol, such as the retired banker who learned to scale 100-foot trees to band the birds. By the same token, not all the tales are happy. Beans tells of many who still act carelessly with the eagle and its habitat, showing that the story is not over.

A compelling story of the saving of the Eagle.......1997-04-08

I found this book to be, much to my surprise, a very good read. Examples: The story of the college professor hoarding illegal poisons to sell to ranchers which are then used to kill eagles and coyotes; the retired man who learned to climb 100 ft trees to band eaglets; the Indians who kill, buy and sell eagles and eagle parts for profit; the western ranchers who live off government subsidies but who feel free to kill eagles as pests. There are many heros and bad guys in this book, including undercover agents risking their lives to catch the bad guys. But the good guys are winning and the eagles are going to make it back. A very good and readable book.

Great travel read.......1999-01-26

As one of the many who spent a year in Vietnam wearing olive drab in the late sixties, I've always been intrigued with the land and the people. Most of the combat yarns are not about the sense of place I remember. Ms. Visser writes a wonderful book that captures the essence of Vietnam, especially the differences between the button-downed North and free-wheeling South. She doesn't have an ax to grind about the origins and blame of the war but is nonetheless intrigued with what it all meant to the Vietnamese. Good book.

The Phytochemical Society of North America held its forty-fourth annual meeting in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada from July 24-28, 2004. This year's meeting was hosted by the University of Ottawa and the Canadian Forest Service, Great Lakes Forestry Centre and was held jointly with the International Society of Chemical Ecology. It is a complete book, deals with one the important subjects forbut in modern control theory, with very recent matematicals tecnics, requires something of experience in algebras of sub- riemman and disciplines when reading it, suitable for students of first year in its Phd.

I teach English Language Arts in East Los Angeles and I have found that books by Gary Soto get and keep the attention of my 12 year old seventh graders. He speaks to all teens especially the Latinos. My students will be reading several of his books and short stories this coming Fall. I especially look forward to a class reading of the play, "Nerdlandia." Just like his other play, "Novio Boy," Soto creates real characters and interesting situations to motivate the English As A Second Language (ESL) student to enjoy reading and writing. Even though some of his plots are a little predictable, the students love the stories and the characters. You fall in love with the characters, like Ceci and Martin, and don't want the story to end.

There's Something About Martin . . ........2003-01-05

and all of the other characters, and that "something" is very lovable and appealing. No, I'm not a ninth-grader. I am an adult who owns a business, and no, I am not a Latina -- but I still thought this play was EXCELLENT!!! A modern take on "GREASE" that tickled the funnybone and touched the heart at the same time -- and gotta love that final scene with Martin's amigo, Tito.
I plan on buying -- and reading -- Gary Soto's other play NOVIO BOY next! I love theater, and I love reading plays, and this play deserves an AWARD (A nice touch is the name of the hero, because in my "real life," I have had crushes on FOUR guys named Martin!)Gary S. is a playwright whose talent is UNPARALLELED, and I recommend NERDLANDIA for all humor aficionados, romantics, and theater buffs from 14-114. Author! Author!!!

Good play for teenagers. Likable original characters and good dialogue. It was entertaining but disappointing because of its predictability and much used sitcom plot.
