Book Description
When children reach the top of Key Stage 2 and are below average readers, they need to practice reading skills with materials that are attractive, motivating, and accessible; variety is important too. These stories will be useful for pupils whose first language is not English.
Each book in the series contains three stories featuring Ali and Sam and their friends from Sledmere Junior School. Each story: uses contexts that are familiar to most pupils, for example the school setting, home/local community; is written in natural language style with simple grammatical structures; highlights "tricky" words on each page to help readers "sort them out" without interrupting the story; features a multi-cultural, working-class community; and is accompanied by questions to be used of for checking understanding and facilitating discussion.

Book Description
Eleven year-old Henrietta is angry at the world. Angry that her father was killed, angry that her mother moved her and her younger brother, Timothy, to London, angry most of all that she couldn't bring her dog along. Today, Henrietta's mother, Diane, wants to buy school uniforms. Henrietta could care less, and talks her mother into letting her shop for groceries, instead. When Henrietta leaves her bags on a bench in Sloane Square, a mangy mutt swipes a bag of rolls. The dog escapes and the chase is on. The complications that ensue make for high adventure.
The stray belongs to a street boy who plays a penny-whistle for coins by day and lays up nights in a derelict mansion. Abandoned apartments next door are used by petty crooks who have burglarized neighborhood flats, including Henrietta's home.
Convinced that she knows one of the thieves, Henrietta recruits her brother and the street boy, Adam, in a risky, zany plot to trap the gang. With last minute luck, and an assist from the stray, Muttley, the three youngsters "net" the crooks and recover Diane's most prized possession, a precious locket and photograph of Henrietta's and Timothy's deceased father.
The engaging children and strong action-line of STOP THAT THIEF play against a fabulous English setting of shops and characters in Chelsea, Sloane Square and Knightsbridge. Kindly Mr. Cobb, the butcher, a supporting character, is a particularly memorable person for his size, kindness and understanding.

Book Description
"Tom McIver has provided us with a splendid bestiary of anti-evolution ideas... It is a fascinating work, and well worth its cost, either for a chuckle or, on those unpleasant occasions, to face up to a nightmare on the rampage."--Euan G. Nisbet, Nature.
Customer Reviews:
this is not a review.......2000-09-28
the quote attributed to the author is bogus. Please confirm this and remove it. You have been duped.
Creationism, the Truth isn't out there, it's in here!.......2000-09-04
It is great that evolution is being proved wrong by science nowadays, as it will lead more people seeing the real world as it is. This book not only reviews some of the facts, but gives some of the details on Creationism and what Creationism really means, that the earth is 6000 years old and that evolution can be proved wrong by anatomy, astronomy, biology, geology, etc.
An exceptional annotated bibliography on anti-evolution........1999-02-16
McIver's bibliography is exceptionally comprehensive with thoughtful annotations. This book is a useful entrance to the anti-evolution literature. (Number's (1992) book "The Creationists" tells the fascinating story.) The bulk of the references are from the late 20th century (to 1986-87), reflecting the fact that this is an especially recent phenomenon, but it is also quite comprehensive for the earlier literature. Some literature that is relevant but not anti-evolution or religious is included. The bibliography by James L. Hayward (1998) "The Creation/Evolution Controversy" is also excellent, treating the literature since 1981, including both theistic and non-theistic authors.
Excellent resource for teaching and research.......1997-11-13
Great stuff. McIver neatly reviews anti-evolution (in the broadest sense) before and after Darwin. Thought provoking in that is shows the mental tricks critics will turn to avoid contradicting the Genesis account and agreeing with Darwin.
It's a shame the revised edition wasn't updated. Still, highly useful.
As an aside, it's highly unlikely that the comment above attributed to McIver is true. McIver comes across as one who _always_ belived in evolution (see, for example, his articles in "Creation/Evolution" and "Skeptic") ... methinks I smell a hoax.

Book Description
Results from the now-classical distribution theory involving convolution and Fourier transformation are extended to cater for Colombeau's generalized functions. Indications are given how these particular generalized functions can be used to investigate linear equations and pseudo differential operators. Furthermore, applications are also given to problems with nonregular data.

Customer Reviews:
Dupin and Holmes = One in the same........2004-08-12
"The Murders in the Rue Morgue" is the short story I read, but it was not from this edition. I have the Barnes & Noble Penguin 60s Classics edition, which contains only this story. While short, this story clearly has a climax, resolution, and all other fundamentals that would be expected within a novel. The two main characters are clearly fashioned like Sherlock Holmes and his deductive investigating methods (Dupin) and his at times duped companion Watson (the unnamed narrator at times). While I found the first 6 pages humdrum, since it only explained the analytical method of thinking (Dupin's way of thinking), and then Dupin's tedious soliloquies about how the murder may have been committed rather drably, the actual explanation of the crime is what caught my attention. I did expect more morbid images, since this is, in fact, Poe. An entertaining short story. I recommend.
Pioneering but surpassed.......2002-10-07
Poe is rightly acknowledged as the granddaddy of detective fiction and collected here is the proof. In these stories he gave us the basic devices of an entire genre: the genius detective and his sidekick, the locked room mystery, cyphers, royal spies, and the rigorous logic of arm-chair detection. However, the problem with pioneering a genre is that, forever after, your pioneering work is going to look rather amateurish. And this, unfortunately, is the case with Poe: his Auguste Dupin stories may well have given birth to modern detective fiction, but alongside the works they inspired they are little more than historically interesting artifacts - and ultimately rather dull ('The Murders in the Rue Morgue' excepted). It is simply not possible for us to experience these stories today with anything like the freshness they would have had for their original readers. So if you're looking for really great stories, look elsewhere. But if, on the other hand, you're seeking the historical origins of detective fiction, then your mystery has just been solved.
Inspiration to Conan Doyle.......2002-10-04
"The murders in the Rue Morgue" is the first of three Poe's stories featuring his famous detective, C. Auguste Dupin. The setting is Paris, and the story goes on mainly at night and in Dupin's apartments. This leaves the reader with a sense of darkness and a little claustrophobia, adding to Poe's great style.
Dupin is able to solve the murders of two women by just visiting the crime scene once and thinking a lot. After reading lots of books by Conan Doyle, Maurice Leblanc, Agatha Christie and P.D. James the fact of the murders itself and the kind of solution given to them may seem a little simple, but we have to remember that this may be considered one of the first "detective stories" of all times. Conan Doyle was obviously inspired in some parts of Dupin's character and reasoning to create Sherlock Holmes.
And the noir atmosphere is, as always, great. This is, appearently, not a story to be seen as "horror", but proves that Poe is one of the great authors of all time.
Grade 8.6/10
Thrilling story which under estimates the power of the beast.......1999-03-05
It was a breathe taking story which shows that even the most common person is capeable of discovering the truth behind a mysterious case. The story was the best I've read in years and should be one of the most populare stories Poe has ever writen. Not only does he leave the person reading the book amaized but, he leaves them terrified about the horrible things that life has to offer us.It just comes to show you never under estimate the power of the beast you don't of what might come. And by reading my reveiw you'll know that Poe has left another person amaised by what can happen to one when they least expect it .

Customer Reviews:
Simple , but unbelievable.......2001-10-22
Maybe this review would be bigger than the story itself. a simple idea and an unbelievable story. the story of our evil deeds hauting us. it is scary , but true. the most amazing thing in this story is Edgar Poe himself; his greatest use of the language, his realistic description of anger. he made me laugh many times , though it this short story is not intended to do that, because of his clever use of the vocabulary. it is a must read book. Dont think of missing it.
It was the best story we have ever read.......1999-10-14
It was the best story we have ever read because it was very scary. The part which we liked best was the ending, when the eye was burning. We felt sorry about the cat when the man cut out its eye.We didn't like the man because he was mean like a drunk.
Feel it by your self.......1999-06-20
If you want to know what is terror to its finest point, read this story
The "Black Cat" was one of the best stories I have ever read.......1999-03-13
The Black Cat is a great short story. One of the best I have ever read. The story was scary, exciting and full of amazing things. I got some chills down my back, and I dont get scared that easily. My favorite part was when he took his anger out on his so called favorite pet. It was in such good detail and so exciting. Also the end was really good. The way the cat got trappped in the wall and his secret was found out. All because he was careless and allowed the cat to climb in there with out knowing. It was just a great story all together. If you loike Edgar Allen Poe you should read this, it's one of his best!
This is a book about two friends turning against each other........1998-10-21
I think "The Black Cat" by Edger Allan Poe is an excellent short story. This is a must read by Edger Allan Poe, if you like short storys that keep you on the edge of your seat, with a lot of suspence and horror. I like the way Poe used two best friends to turn on each other. I think that is what made this short story good.

Book Description
First published in Graham's Magazine, April 1841, this tale is a literary landmark: the first modern detective story.
There are no clues for police specialist C. August Dupin -- only a room in "wildest disorder" with all the doors and windows locked, a blood-smeared razor and a body shoved up a chimney. Who could have done this? And more importantly, why?
Also included in this collection: "The Purloined Letter," "The Thousand-and-Second Tale of Scheherazade," "A Descent into the Maelstrom," "The Raven" and "The Masque of the Red Death."
