Clearly written guide to edible plants with recipes and well told descriptions. I enjoyed every page.
Truely a useful plant identifiction book.......2000-07-13
I have quite a few "nature" books on my shelf, and at least 5 on plant identification. I was a tad bit leary when I ordered this book, thinking that it would just become another dust gatherer. Boy was I wrong. It is one of the easiest reads I have ever seen on this subject. You do not have to have a degree in botany to get into, and begin to use the info in this book. It has rekindled my desire to learn more about the plant-life around me. If you live, and play outdoors in California, then I would definately recomend this book, and some of the recipes listed in this book really are to die for ( and I am not talking about the chapter on poisonous plant identification ).

I really wanted to love this book.......2006-12-27
The information is great, but the organization is lacking.. At least for my uses.
I bought this book becuase I wanted to learn the edible plants of texas,both as a reference to browse, and as a book to look up plants I've located in it....
It is organized for netiher. If you already know a plant by scientific name, or common name then you can easily look up the plant in the index, but if not it's something of a task.
The plants are alphabetical, no big suprise there... but the sketches are few, and the color plates are all in a center section of 16 pages and 4 plants each... I sincerley doubt (although I have not counted) that all the plants are represented. The color plates dont' have page references so to find the detail information, you need to go back to the index again.
So as i said, if you already know the plants by name, it's fine to look them up in. But if you want to browse through to find aplant you see, or
look it up by characteristics... it's not terribly useful. If you want to browse through to familiarise yourself with the flora... again.. not useful.
Again in summary, Information good, organization, poor for my uses.
I was very disapointed in the usefulness of the book itself.
Excellent resource.......2006-07-26
I bought this book because I am interested in dyeing yarn with plants. I have found it an invaluable introduction to plants for dyeing but it is also a good basic guide to various uses of Texas plants. I am new to Texas and this book has enabled me to investigate and learn about the natural plant life of the Southwest. The information on dyeing and edible plants is in depth enough to allow for experimentation. It has recipes for preparing wild plants that I would never have imagined eating --like the prickly pear cactus pad.
The dyeing section introduced me to solar dyeing, a technique I had not heard of before. I have experimented a little with the technique and it works really well, especially for dyeing with tree clippings because the solar fermentation breaks down the bark.
A non-native who knows nothing about Texas plant life needs a basic fieldguide with pictures in order to identify the plants to be used but Tull's book provides much, much more.

Excellent for Texan plant enthusiasts.......2005-08-26
I found this book in my local library, and knew I couldn't live without it. As a beginning spinner and yarn dyer, I found the information that the authoress provides invaluable. I especially enjoyed the step-by-step dyeing instructions, and the categories of the table of contents: toxicity is so NICE to know right away!
Definitive on edible and useful Texas plants.......2001-09-22
I have been interested in edible plants in Texas since attendng a class this March given by a member of Texas Agricutural Extension Service where we foraged for our lunch after class, in the woods. This book is so extensive, includng recipes (I'm a cook), I found a lot of nutritious. medicinal plants in my backyard's weeds this spring. I was prompted to want to forage more.I would recommend it to everyone who wants more information than just the books for use by campers. I also have Edible Wild Plants by Peterson, which I also like, that has photographs and drawings but is not as extensive as Ms. Tull's book. Texas loss is Alaska's gain!

A great companion book..........2007-03-11
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Nyerges's book is weak on its photos and plant identification but is excellent as a companion book to all those boring plant ID texts. His book provides excellent background and practical information from someone who has actually used these plants. While geared for California, many of the plants are found across the U.S. especially in the West.

In this book, tumour growth is perceived as a deviation from the normal development of the human organism. The molecular, cellular, and tissue determinants of different tumours are discussed showing that each is a different disease, often corresponding to a particular developmental stage. The natural history of several cancers illustrates how clinical incidence can be just the visible part of the iceberg, while the first changes at the tissue level sometimes occur several years before tumour growth becomes manifest. Several mechanisms are proposed to explain the distribution of cancers during the human life span and the decline of the incidence of cancers during human senescence.

Spectral theory for the heat equation represents one of the
more exciting points of interaction between math and physics:
It also serves as a deep link, via spectral theory, between geometry(math), and quantum gravity(physics). While the subject has roots far back, this lovely book presents some of the more exciting developments in the past decade. One of the success stories in interdisciplinary theoretical science! It is well written, and will be a great source for grad students. This very nice book further points toward the research trends of the future. Moreover, the results presented in the book are timeless. The book will be of value also ten years from now. Being an acknowledged authority in the subject, this author is in a unique position to write a book on the central themes and theories in the subject.

The literature on the spectral analysis of second order elliptic differential operators contains a great deal of information on the spectral functions for explicitly known spectra. The same is not true, however, for situations where the spectra are not explicitly known. Over the last several years, the author and his colleagues have developed new, innovative methods for the exact analysis of a variety of spectral functions occurring in spectral geometry and under external conditions in statistical mechanics and quantum field theory. Spectral Functions in Mathematics and Physics presents a detailed overview of these advances. The author develops and applies methods for analyzing determinants arising when the external conditions originate from the Casimir effect, dielectric media, scalar backgrounds, and magnetic backgrounds. The zeta function underlies all of these techniques, and the book begins by deriving its basic properties and relations to the spectral functions. The author then uses those relations to develop and apply methods for calculating heat kernel coefficients, functional determinants, and Casimir energies. He also explores applications in the non-relativistic context, in particular applying the techniques to the Bose-Einstein condensation of an ideal Bose gas. Self-contained and clearly written, Spectral Functions in Mathematics and Physics offers a unique opportunity to acquire valuable new techniques, use them in a variety of applications, and be inspired to make further advances.
