Nice List But Utterly Unusable.......2005-05-25

This book could have been a rescue tube in this heavily urbanized east coast. It puts out pretty nice collection of things you can do in weekends, places you can go and experience you can have. I'm pretty outgoing and am aware of "secret gems" in this area but I still found few more gems like Hot Ballooning in CT, renting a boat (no licenses req) for week long journey through Erie Canal and winter language classes at Mohonk Mountain House. I also found helpful trip reports for Block Island and Mystic Seaport which I was looking for quite a while. But beyond this, the book is pretty much unusable. The book is organized as series of very descriptive long long long trip reports. So unless you are willing to sit down and patiently read these 400 pages of trip reports, you won't know if you should choose this or that. The editor or whoever decided layout of book simply didn't used common sense. How a typical reader like me would use this book? I would typically open this book on Friday night and want to have a look at a table listing places and attributes such as cost, travel time, best season, outdoor activities, attractions, required reservations, etc. Then I would choose couple of places from this table, read their 20 lines max trip report, have a look at 3-4 photos, choose one place and just go. Right? It's common sense. Instead, this book has a long long glorifying travel essays as if they are competing for some literary prize. There are no summaries. Forget that, there are NO PHOTOS!! So unless you read the whole thing start to finish, you won't have slightest idea whether should you go there or there. At times even after reading whole thing you would be still confused which place to pick because each trip author tends to glorify their trip so much (even if it's just Newport or Newark)! Bummer. I think the book could have been cut down in 1/4 of size which would have increased its usability by factor of 10.

A whole ecosystem in one book.......2000-06-22

When I launched into my MS field work in northeastern Minnesota, I was completely unfamiliar with the Great Lakes-Saint Lawrence transitional forest ecosystem, and therefore not a little unprepared! Fortunate indeed that I stumbled onto this little treasure.

Like all Sierra Club Naturalist's Guides, "The North Woods" starts with geology and soils, then ventures into plants, animals, and ecosystem structure. Simple photographs and line drawings are provided for some of the most common and especially important plant and animal species. If you're looking for a conventional field guide, however, this ain't it. Instead, "The North Woods" is a guide to communities and ecosystems. An excellent investment, and next to Heinselmann's "Boundary Waters" one of my favorites. -William Adair, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Utah State University

Kinetics of Metal-Gas Interactions at Low Temperatures is devoted to the formation of a natural oxide film. This few nm thick surface layer is produced instantaneously if oxygen or water vapor is present in the gas atmosphere. It is responsible for the corrosion behavior, for wear and friction of metallic materials, as well as for hydrogen embrittlement or poisoning of catalytic surface reactions. Oxidation impedes experiments in surface sciences and production processes in modern thin-film technology. It can reliably be avoided only if expensive ultra-high vacuum techniques are applied. This monograph presents an introduction to the subject in a tutorial style. It demonstrates how complex metal-gas interactions can be analyzed by standard procedures of chemical kinetics.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Saturation spectroscopy techniques were used to demonstrate the ability to make spatially resolved temperature measurements by exploiting the B3 Pil(O+(sub u)) - X1 Sigma(O+ (sub g)) electronic transition in molecular iodine (12). Doppler-free saturation spectroscopy measurements resulted in hyperfine spectral profiles for the P(7O) 17-1 and P(53) 19-2 ro-vibrational transitions between the electronic levels. Doppler-limited saturation spectroscopy, an adaptation of the Doppler-free technique in which beams propagate in the same direction and cross within the gas sample, allowed for the measurement of spatially resolved Doppler profiles for the same transitions. The profiles were measured at several spatial positions in 12 cells with measured temperature gradients. The technique did not produce accurate temperature readings; however, the saturation spectroscopy variant did produce profiles that were spatially resolved, with an interaction volume of approximately 12 x 1 x 1 (mm units). This thesis was motivated by the Air Force's Airborne Laser Laboratory (ABL), which has a need to discriminate a spatially distributed temperature distribution. The Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser (COIL), which is the high power directed energy source for ABL, has a low concentration of 12 as a reaction byproduct. Line-integrated optical temperature measurements inside the COIL reaction chamber have been higher than predicted, which can have a dramatic effect on the threshold condition for the laser.

This project has focused on the development of a complex assembly of mutually corresponding technological units:-a low temperature thermal process for the desorption of PCBs and other organics from soils and other contaminated solid wastes; -the extraction of PCBs from soils by an ecological friendly aqueous solution of selected surfactants; -the chemical decontamination of PCBs in oils and in oil-in-water emulsions by metallic sodium and potassium in polyethylene glycols in the presence of aluminum powder; -the modified alkaline catalyzed chemical decontamination of PCBs in oils and in oil-in-water dispersions in a solid-state reactor (in a film of reacting emulsion on solid carriers); and -the breakdown of PCBs in aqueous emulsions with activated hydroxyl radicals enhanced by UV radiation The processes operate in a closed loop configuration with effluents circulating among the process unit. These technologies have been verified at laboratory and pilot-plant scales.

Methane oxidation in a cover soil of a landfill located in a boreal climate was studied at temperatures ranging from 1-19^oC and with water content of 7-34% of dry weight (dw), corresponding to 17-81% of water-holding capacity (WHC) in order to better understand the factors regulating CH"4 oxidation at low temperatures. CH"4 consumption was detected at all the temperatures studied (1-19^oC) and an increase in CH"4 consumption rate in consecutive incubations was obtained even at 1^oC, indicating activation or increase in enzymes and/or microorganisms responsible for CH"4 oxidation. CH"4 consumption was reduced with low water content (17%WHC) at all temperatures. The response of CH"4 consumption to temperature was high with Q"1"0 values from 6.5 to 8.4 and dependent on water content: at 33%WHC or more an increase in water content was accompanied by a decrease in Q"1"0 values. The responses of CH"4 consumption to water content varied at different temperatures so that at 1-6^oC, CH"4 consumption increased along with water content (33-67%WHC) while at 12-19^oC the response was curvilinear, peaking at 50%WHC. CH"4 consumption was less tolerant (higher Q"1"0 values; 6.5-8.4) of low temperatures compared to basal respiration (Q"1"0 values for CO"2 production and O"2 consumption 3.2-4.0). Overall, the present results demonstrate the presence of CH"4-oxidizing microorganisms, which are able to consume CH"4 and to be activated or grow at low temperatures, suggesting that CH"4 oxidation can reduce atmospheric CH"4 emissions from methanogenic environments even in cold climates.

While most of numerical methods described in the literature deal with real intervals and real vectors, there is no systematic study of methods in complex interval arithmetic. The book fills this gap. Several main subjects are considered: outer estimates for the range of complex functions, especially complex centered forms, the best approximations of elementary complex functions by disks, iterative methods for the inclusion by polynomial zeros including their implementation on parallel computers, the analysis of numerical stability of iterative methods by using complex interval arithmetic and numerical computation of curvilinear integrals with error bounds. Mainly new methods are presented developed over the last years, including a lot of very recent results by the authors some of which have not been published before.
