Grizzly Country
Andy Russell Manufacturer: The Lyons Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 1585740241 |
Book Description
The grizzly bear has always inspired awe in man, but the animal's true nature and character has long been shrouded in myth. Few people know grizzlies as Andy Russell does, and in Grizzly Country he shares stories from a lifetime of experience observing them, first as hunter, then as cameraman. In wonderfully engaging prose, he reveals the life cycle of this remarkable creature.Like Farley Mowat's Never Cry Wolf, Grizzly Country opened a new way of thinking about an oft-misunderstood predator. It is a book for anyone interested in wild America.

Maybe the most accurate portrayal of the grizzly that has ever been written.......2006-08-19
A grand old classic by man with a lifetime of experience.......1998-10-13
Andy Russell's Grizzly Country blends a rich history of concern for this bear with some gentle and telling words to the wise. He even got ahead of the scientists in some cases. For instance, biologists used to insist that the bears living on the coast of Alaska were not the same species as the bears living inland. Russell wryly wrote how strange it was to see a bear moving up one side of a mountain, and become another species just by crossing the ridge and moving inland, down the other side of the mountain.
Russell saw grizzlies as a child, and raised his kids around the bears. He has great stories to tell, stories of humor, and depth. This is a very fine book, cover to cover.

Book Description
The California Bear Flag and the University of California football team the Golden Bears emblemize the great animal that has been extinct in California since the 1920s but once numbered perhaps as many as ten thousand in the state. Forty years after its original publication, University of California Press proudly reissues California Grizzly, still the most comprehensive book on the bear's history in California. The lessons of the book resonate today as the issues of protection of wildlife habitat versus unfettered development of land for human use are debated with increasing urgency.Customer Reviews:

However, if you are looking for something with maps and pictures to help guide you on your tour of Ireland, you may want to look at some of the more "touristy" books, such as Fodor's or Frommer's. For the less than seasoned traveler "Be a Traveler" would be a good supplement to the basic information found in books of that type.
For the novice traveler, this book may not be the most comfortable to use, but for the seasoned veteran, it is great.

Carbon in the Geobiosphere (Topics in Geobiology)
Fred T. Mackenzie , and Abraham Lerman Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 140204044X |
Product Description
What is the importance of carbon on Earth?
Carbon is the chemical element that is the main building block of living organic matter.
It is essential in all biological processes and in a great variety of mineral and inorganic processes near the EarthÆs surface.
In the form of carbon dioxide, it is a greenhouse gas and its atmospheric concentration is demonstrably tied to climate.
Its recent growth in the atmosphere due to human activities is believed to be responsible for the enhanced greenhouse effect and global warming of the Earth.
The title of this book, Carbon in the Outer Shell of the Earth, conveys our view that the naturally occurring chemical compounds of carbon and, in particular, carbon dioxide always played an environmentally important role in the different parts of the Earth that comprise its outer shell, from the base of the lithosphere, -150 km below the surface, to an altitude of about +30 km. The outer shell includes the lower atmosphere, continental, subsurface, and oceanic waters, the biosphere, and the minerals in the sedimentary and crystalline lithosphere.

Reactive Flow Modeling of Hydrothermal Systems (Lecture Notes in Earth Sciences)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540203389 |
Book Description
The book introduces the topic of geochemical modeling of fluids in subsurface and hydrothermal systems. The intention is to serve as a textbook for graduate students in aqueous, environmental and groundwater geochemistry, despite the fact that its focus is on the special topic of geochemistry in hydrothermal systems, it also provides new insights for experienced researchers with respect to the topic of reactive transport. The overall purpose is to give the reader an understanding of the processes that control the chemical composition of waters in hydrothermal systems and to highlight the interfaces between chemistry, geothermics and hydrogeology.
From the reviews:
"..is a nice, compact introduction to the principles of modeling coupled fluid flow and fluid-mineral reactions in active geothermal systems, as used for heating and electricity generation." ( Christoph A. Heinrich, ECONOMIC GEOLOGY, June 2004)

Refined Genetic Algorithms for Polypeptide Structure Prediction

Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A596023. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Accurate and reliable prediction of macromolecular structures has eluded researchers for nearly 40 years. Prediction via energy minimization assumes the native conformation has the globally minimal energy potential. An exhaustive search is impossible since for molecules of normal size, the size of the search space exceeds the size of the universe. Domain knowledge sources, such as the Brookhaven PDB can be mined for constraints to limit the search space. Genetic algorithms (GAs) are stochastic, population based, search algorithms of polynomial (P) time complexity that can produce semi-optimal solutions for problems of nondeterministic polynomial (NP) time complexity such as PSP. Three three refined GAs are presented: A farming model parallel hybrid GA (PHGA) preserves the effectiveness of the serial algorithm with substantial speed up. Portability across distributed and MPP platforms is accomplished with the Message Passing Interface (MPI) communications standard. A Real-valved GA system, real-valued Genetic Algorithm, Limited by constraints (REGAL), exploiting domain knowledge. Experiments with the pentapeptide Met-enkephalin have identified conformers with lower energies (CHARMM) than the accepted optimal conformer (Scheraga, et al), -31.98 vs -28.96 kcals/mol. Analysis of exogenous parameters yields additional insight into performance. A parallel version (Para-REGAL), an island model modified to allow different active constraints in the distributed subpopulations and novel concepts of Probability of Migration and Probability of Complete Migration.

Remote Nanosatellite Formation Designs With Orbit Perturbation Corrections and Attitude Control/Propulsion Subsystem Correlation

Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A054693. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The innovative idea of distributing the functionality of current larger satellites among smaller, cooperative satellites has been sincerely considered for assorted space missions to accomplish goals that are not possible or very difficult to do with a single satellite. Additionally, the utilization of smaller satellites is maximized within formations and clusters to conduct missions such as interferometry and earth-sensing. This paper presents a methodology to describe, populate and analyze numerous formation designs employing the use of Hill's equations of motion to describe a formation's dynamics. These equations of motion are then programmed into a MATLAB code to produce Cartesian elements for input into a Satellite Tool Kit(Trademark) (STK) simulation that demonstrates numerous possible cluster formation designs. These simulations are then used to determine delta V requirements for overcoming LEO- type perturbations that were modeled within STK's High Precision Orbit Propagator (HPOP). Finally, components from two subsystems Attitude Determination and Control (ADCS) and Propulsion, using the delta V calculations from the simulation analysis and current advances in MicroElectroMechanical systems (MEMs) and nanosatellite technology, are presented based on a mass constraint of 10kg for the entire satellite.

The Storming Media report number is A524153. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Both locally (San Francisco Bay Area) and nationally, evidence is mounting that particulate matter poses a serious health risk. Locally, concentrations of 10 micron particles are highest on cold nights, during the months of December and January. Analysis of the composition of these 10 micron particles suggests that a large percentage is wood smoke. Currently, there are no adequate ways to estimate the number of lit fireplaces on a given night. NASA Ames Research Center, the Naval Postgraduate School and San Francisco Bay Area Air Quality Management District performed a joint research project to determine the feasibility of using thermal imagery to detect lit fireplaces. This thesis addresses the use of an airborne multi-spectral remote sensing system to detect lit fireplaces. The focus will he on the remote sensing equipment used for fireplace detection, the development of the test plan, airborne data collection, ground truthing and data analysis.

A Training Transfer Study of the Indoor Simulated Marksmanship Trainer
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423522036 |
The Storming Media report number is A950724. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis examines the effectiveness of the Indoor Simulated Marksmanship Trainer (ISMT) as a tool to train shooters in the fundamentals of marksmanship. Key concepts explored in the research are verification of skills transfer resulting from practice and the predictive value of simulated performance to proficiency at real task performance. There was no statistical difference in the scores of recruits trained in the ISMT versus a control group that was not trained in the ISMT. Scores on simulated firing were not a strong predictor of live fire performance. In a second experiment subjects were evaluated on their proficiency and improvement during un-coached practice at the task of simulated precision fire on a target at a simulated known distance of 300 yards from the shooters. After comparable amounts of practice in the ISMT, subjects who had not previously received formal marksmanship training failed to demonstrate levels of proficiency comparable to those subjects who had previously received formal marksmanship training in the military. Consequently, the research found no evidence to suggest the ISMT qualifies as a black box training apparatus capable of imparting skill through practice without the added presence of expert instruction or an existing knowledge of marksmanship techniques.

Spectral Computations for Bounded Operators
Mario Ahues , Alain Largillier , and Balmohan Limaye Manufacturer: Chapman & Hall/CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1584881968 |
Book Description
Exact eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and principal vectors of operators with infinite dimensional ranges can rarely be found. Therefore, one must approximate such operators by finite rank operators, then solve the original eigenvalue problem approximately. Serving as both an outstanding text for graduate students and as a source of current results for research scientists, Spectral Computations for Bounded Operators addresses the issue of solving eigenvalue problems for operators on infinite dimensional spaces. From a review of classical spectral theory through concrete approximation techniques to finite dimensional situations that can be implemented on a computer, this volume illustrates the marriage of pure and applied mathematics. It contains a variety of recent developments, including a new type of approximation that encompasses a variety of approximation methods but is simple to verify in practice. It also suggests a new stopping criterion for the QR Method and outlines advances in both the iterative refinement and acceleration techniques for improving the accuracy of approximations. The authors illustrate all definitions and results with elementary examples and include numerous exercises. Spectral Computations for Bounded Operators thus serves as both an outstanding text for second-year graduate students and as a source of current results for research scientists.

Life and times in old Hollywood.......2003-10-29
This particular novel begins with the earliest years of the Jacobi family, after the father has died, when Lotte Jacobi does her best to keep her small family together. Mother and sons reminisce about family adventures, occasional fights and rubbing elbows with Hollywood icons. The two young brothers, Bartie and Richard, are certainly influenced by their parent's eccentric lifestyle and tendency toward dramatic confrontations. Richard, as an artist, interprets his unresolved issues on canvas, while Bartie writes movie scripts, boxes of them, forever trolling for a movie deal.
Lotte Jacobi proves a poor judge of character, especially when dealing with men. She makes some disastrous decisions that throw her family into hard times economically and emotionally. Still, emotions are Lotte's strong suit and her presence in both boy's lives is evident, as she directs their decisions and choices far into adulthood. They eventually lose their family home because of Lotte's inability to handle finances.
The second half of the novel is more cohesive and speaks to the strong influence of family on both sons. Richard Jacobi, now a successful artist, moves back into the family home with his wife, Marcia and two adopted American-Indian boys, hoping to recapture his fragile childhood memories. It would appear that he has married a woman much like his mother, raising his sons in the same dysfunctional atmosphere as his own childhood.
Richard has made his artistic reputation through a series of paintings of Madeline, a former next-door neighbor cum longtime lover and is preparing for a show of his work in Paris. However, he hasn't given enough thought to his wife's real jealousy of her supposed rival for Richard's affections, too willing to ignore the signs of trouble, much as the infamous Lotte modeled for him. Nor has his aging mother changed in any significant way, except perhaps that she is more tedious in her dotage. The characters may change, but the chaos endures.
Epstein painstakingly recounts the frenetic dialog, the hysteria and the arguments of generations of Jacobis. This family never gains emotional maturity, even as adults with young children. This novel has enjoyed rave reviews and The New York Times review calls it "one of the four best Hollywood novels ever written," with favorable comparison to Fitzgerald's Last Tycoon and Schulberg's What Makes Sammy Run. San Remo Drive appears to be an acquired taste and Epstein fans will not be disappointed. Luan Gaines/2003.
