Book Description
Two experienced and well-known research scientists, each from a vastly different part of the world, have combined their respective expertises to provide the reader with perhaps a unique text which presents an in-depth treatment of the various stress manifestations and an overall discussion of stress in cultivated plants. Professor Bryan McKersie of Canada, who over the years has been active in research, teaching and agricultural application of scientific techniques, has dealt with and described cold, chilling, flooding, desiccation and oxidative stress phenomena: Professor Ya'acov Leshem of Israel, whose research experience and activities have centered around different facets of plant stress, has covered heat, drought, salinity and environmental pollution. Notwithstanding their different research experiences, both authors have cooperated and together have written a well-integrated and up-to-date text describing the major stress factors and problems which are limiting factors for optimal plant growth and hence of yield. The information assembled carefully in this book makes no claim to provide ready-made remedies to overcome the various stresses but in many cases suggests feasible and scientifically applicable approaches and partial solutions for stress coping, some of which are now in the process of being developed. This book is intended for research workers and students of agriculture and horticulture, for plant physiologists and is of overall interest to scientists dealing with stress physiology.

Uncover North Dakota and South Dakota's best-kept secrets, such as the Corn Palace in Mitchell (where thousands of bushels of corn, wheat, grain, and grasses are used to create beautifully decorated mosaics) or the Fort Seward Wagon Train--a one-week wagon train reenactment.
Customer Reviews:
Light, good guidebook .......2004-12-27
I used this guidebook for a visit to the Black Hills of South Dakota. If there's a more interesting place to visit than the Black Hills I haven't found it. The scenery is great, the wildlife abundant, and the history is fascinating. For example, the guidebook led me to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and the Red Cloud Heritage Center and Red Cloud's grave. (Red Cloud was a Dakota chief who defeated the U.S. army in 1868 and forced a withdrawal from Indian lands.) On a different level, the book also led me to Kevin Costner's casino and restaurant in Deadwood, as well as Will Bill Hickok's grave in the same town.
The guidebook divides the Dakotas into six regions and lists interesting places to stay, old-time restaurants, museums and art galleries, annual events, and assorted trivia. Sidebars recount tidbits of Dakota history, especially tales of its cowboys and Indians. This guidebook is light and small and well-organized and all you need to find your way to interesting spots, especially if you're the sort of person who's allergic to shopping malls and cooker-cutter hotels and restaurants

Good but not much to compare.......2002-07-30
My family was recently transferred to North Dakota with the Air Force. Before we moved we wanted to learn more about it, since we had never been here. It was very difficult to find ANYTHING in print about North Dakota. I finally found an older copy of this book in a book store in Anchorage, AK, and then went on-line and ordered the new edition.
While I think this book is pretty decent, I wish I could find a book with more pictures. While North Dakota is hardly considered a popular tourist destination, there IS some pretty scenery. I think this book would be better if they added some sections with pictures. Otherwise, the book is pretty good. I would recommend it to anyone considering travel in North Dakota (or South Dakota, it also has a section on that state), but then again I have not come across a single other book that focuses on North Dakota as much.
I learned a lot of new things about my home state.......2001-01-24
I really enjoyed reading all about the Dakotas. I plan on traveling to learn more about my roots. This book will really help me plan my travels.
Customer Reviews:
This is a wonderful book.......2007-10-19
When I was in high school, I found "Last Days .. " in the library and every time I came across it could not put it down. I tried and tried to find copies in used book stores, but it was never available until the new edition came out. I was exceedingly happy to find this book available.
Mr. Wilton gives the best account of the murders of the Royal Family available until the fall of communism, when the work of researchers who had labored secretly to solve the mystery and find the remains of Nicholas and his family was revealed. And Yurovsky's report of the murders was retrieved from the archives.
This book is not anti-semitic. It is factual: the new appendice is very useful in illustrating the prominence of jewish individuals in the creation of soviet Russia. There is nothing wrong with pointing out that information. Karl Marx himself was jewish.
Amazing!.......2006-05-10
I have been meaning to get around to this book for a long time and am happy now to have finally read it. The book is well written and meticulously documented. Wilton's perspective in writing this book in the 1920's just after the Great War, is extremely important for one who would evaluate it objectively. Keep in mind that this book was written at a time when anti-German propaganda in England was at its height. If anything, the book is anti-German in tone. That some reviewers have chosen to style it "anti-Semitic" merely demonstrates how frightened certain individuals are of any relevation of the truth.
Within the corpus of this important book is laid bare the monstrous plan of the fiends who usurped Holy Russia and who ritually murdered the entire Romanov family. This included not just Saint Nicholas II and Alexandra, but also their daughters and son. Included in the carnage were also the surviving close relatives of the Tsar. The monsters who took over Holy Russia felt that they had to kill the entire family. This demonstrates for all to see the level of their deviltry.
The destruction of Holy Russia was symbolized by the murder of the Romanov family. And this act symbolically signified the end of the Constantian era. Moscow was truly the Third Rome, following Rome itself and then Constantinople. The final symbolic act, which revealed the mind of the murderers was the consecration by the bloody Bolsheviks of Judas Iscariot. What more significant sigil could there be of the anti-Christian mind set of the monsters who destroyed Holy Russia?
The book is excellent. Read it. And be enriched and blessed by the experience.
Anti-semitic and full of flaws.......2004-02-23
The book is violently anti-Semitic. More importantly for an informed reader, it is so inaccurate that it is useless for anybody but historians exploring the investigation of Romanov murders. Wilton's hatred of Jews clouded his mind to the extent that he was unable to establish even the most basic facts concerning the case, although he had ample opportunity to interview a significant number of key witnesses and had access to evidence now lost. Wilton was fired from London's "Times" for being unreliable, in 1919 the British High Commission wanted him recalled and Foreign Office often branded him a liar and an embarrassment.
A Shocking True Story.......2003-01-01
Complete, shocking story of how, and why, the Soviet secret police massacred Tsar Nicholas II, his wife Alexandra, and their five children. As head of the dynasty that had ruled Russia for three centuries, Nicholas II personified his land and people. His cold-blooded murder by order of Lenin and Sverdlov was thus symbolic of the Communist effort to obliterate a rich national and cultural heritage, and presaged the terrible Soviet bloodletting of later years. Dramatic yet meticulous account by a veteran British journalist and historian, based on the official on-site inquest of Russian investigator Nikolai Sokolov -- the most thorough ever conducted. As special correspondent in Russia for the London Times during the years of revolution and civil war, the author writes with authority and rare candor. He forthrightly assigns responsibility for the historic crime, showing the role of racial-ethnic revenge in motivating the killers. The crucial Jewish role in the Communist takeover of Russia and the early Bolshevik regime is detailed in an eye-opening introduction by historian Mark Weber, and an appendix by the author. Attractive, updated new edition of an authoritative but long-suppressed work. A generous selection of rare and revealing photographs supplements the text.
Why is the truth always termed racist or anti-semetic.......1999-03-26
Here you have a book written 'on the spot' at the time of this atrocity. The finger points at the internationl Jew with out a doubt. The NAZI holocaust pales compared to the pogrom this ignited.

Book Description

Uneven but with mythic dimensions.......2005-09-09
A friend introduced me to this collection this summer. It's a relatively easy read for anyone with a college education in Spanish. Allende uses modern stylistic devices and vocabulary.
The frame is a Scheherazade set up... a series of stories about love relationships.
Some stories are a bit schematic and unsatisfying but when she hits paydirt, it's killer. I especially liked the stories 'Si me tocaras el corazon' and 'Walimai.' These felt almost like deep folk/ fairytales.
If you enjoyed A.S. Byatt's "The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye," you'll like this one too.
Wonderful Writer--Allende.......2005-08-10
Cuentos de Eva Luna arrived rapidly. I am reading it for pleasure and I'm not being disappointed. The book is well bound for a paperback, comfortable to hold, easy to read for a student of a second language.
She Writes With Magic Ink.......2005-05-27
What a collection of characters! An illiterate woman who sells words. A man obsessed with a little girl. A woman whose marriage was based on letters written by the wrong man. A woman who spends her life waiting for revenge. A rich man who keeps a girl prisoner. Rascals trying to break into society. A lonely dictator. Invisible Indians. Every character is flawed in some terrible way, and yet, somehow appealing. Somehow you become attached to each of the characters and you want to hear their stories. There is something absolutely magical about these stories by Isabel Allende, stories you can't put down.
What is her secret? I don't know. I think she writes with magic ink. But, there is something else, too. Her characters never give up. No matter how bad, how flawed, how actually depraved they may be, they keep struggling toward the light. And so, each of us, with our own struggle to escape from darkness, can relate to these people and their stories.
These are some of the finest stories I have ever read. I recommend the collection most highly. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber.

Book Description
Isabel Allende now ranks as one of the world's most beloved authors. In 1988, she introduced the world to Eva Luna, in a novel of the same name that recounted the adventurous life of a poor young Latin American woman who finds friendship, love, and some measure of worldly success through her powers as a storyteller. Her most ambitious novel up to that time, Eva Luna was described by the Washington Post as "a cascade of stories [that] tumbles out before the reader, stories vivid, passionate and human." Returning to this tale by popular demand, Allende unveiled The Stories of Eva Luna in 1991. A treasure trove of brilliantly crafted tales, the book showed us once again why Eva Luna and her much-celebrated creator have won such a large and devoted readership.
We begin with Rolf Carlé, the European refugee, journalist, and lover who figured so largely in Eva Luna. Lying in bed with Eva Luna, he asks her to tell him a story. "What about?" she asks. "Tell me a story you have never told anyone before. Make it up for me." And so she does, giving Rolf Carlé and the reader twenty-three vibrant, enchanting demonstrations of her artistry. Here are compesinos and rich people, guerrillas and fortune-tellers, great beauties and tyrants, the foreign rendered indelibly familiar. Here is Clarisa, "born before the city had electricity, she lived to see television coverage of the first astronaut levitating on the moon, and she died of amazement when the Pope came for a visit and was met in the street by homosexuals dressed up as nuns"; here is El Capitán, who waited for forty years before proposing to his dancing partner; Horacio Fortunato, a circus owner and entrepreneur, whose encounter with a languid foreign woman will force him to change his roguish ways even as he attempts to court her; Maurizia Rugieri, who abandons her husband and child for a young medical student, converting their life together into an opera of her own design; Nicholas Vidal, who "had always known that a woman would cost him his life" but never suspected that it would be the wife of Judge Hidalgo; Raid Halbi, once again displaying his concern and wisdom for the people of Agua Santa; Marcia Liberman, the wife of a European diplomat, whose brief affair with the President for Life of an unnamed Latin American country has startling rewards...
Love, vengeance, nostalgia, compassion, irony -- Isabel Allende leaves no emotion untouched in these stories. Opulently imagined, stirringly told, they confirm her place as one of the world's leading writers.
Customer Reviews:
Read Eva Luna First.......2006-08-17
This review is for the English language Bantam Book paperback edition published in February 1992, 367 pages. THE STORIES OF EVA LUNA did not appear on the USA Today top 150 best sellers list, although four of the author's novels have appeared on that list.
THE STORIES OF EVA LUNA is a collection of 23 short stories set in a fictional Caribbean country. Written in the style of magical realism, these are tales about the lives, loves and lovemaking of impoverished but hearty folks, including bandits, scoundrels and prostitutes, who confront cruelty, misfortune or death.
Although only six of the stories incorporate the characters and events in Allende's novel EVA LUNA, they do constitute a sequel of sorts, especially the final story. For an overall richer experience, read EVA LUNA first.
And of Clay are we Created.......2006-01-20
i read that short story in my lit class. i loved it. it caused me to read Eva Luna and it is also the reason that i have given this book 4 stars. thats how good And of Clay are we Created. i'm not sure if all the storys are worth it. its very erotic. and i don't remember most of them but i do remember liking quite a few of them. however , the best one is the last one.
A Masterpiece.......2003-10-27
Isabela Allende's "The Stories of Eva Luna" is truely a masterpiece not only in its origional Spanish edition, but also in this English translation, which fully gives the reader a feel for Allende's tone. Each story is consice, yet powerful and filled with allusions to everyday life. Allende covers a wide range of topics from politics and the story of Eva Peron (in "Two Words") to the complexity of love (in "Toad's Mouth). The way in which the book parallels "1001 Nights" is amazing, as well as the way in which Allende is able to incorporate the novel "Eva Luna" into this work. My personal favorites were "The Little Heidelberg" (possibly the best example of magical realism that I have ever read) and "And of Clay Are We Created" (a moving story based on a real event).
Love and Death Allende Style.......2003-09-11
Allende's socio-economic, political and feminist agendas are melded together in the lives of the residents of Agua Santa. Her use of the short story genre is masterful. This is truly a can't put down book, leaving its readers clamoring for more Allende. Viva Isabel!
The Stories of Eva Luna.......2003-09-08
These stories were so amazing, creative, and vivid. I enjoyed them very much. I especially loved the shortness of each story that lends itself for quick evening reading. This book I will add to my library of "must" reads, that I'm creating for my daughter. I'm now reading each of Allende's books one by one.

Allende Rocks.......2007-04-06
I love Allende's characters and her writing. Zorro was my first read of hers and I have purchased everything. I get very involved in the story and characters. Her trilogy for kids is in my library and is checked out all of the time. Good writing is good writing.
This is the ENGLISH LANGUAGE VERSION.......2007-03-21
Do not be fooled by the first sentence being shown in Spanish above (as I was). This is the English language version of Eva Luna, and Amazon mistakenly put the first sentence of the Spanish version by the title. I know this is not a review of the book, but I would like to prevent someone else from making the mistake I did and ending up paying almost the full price of the book in shipping charges to try to return it and get the correct version.
Interesting Novel .......2006-11-06
This novel is a romantic one. The romance starts nearly at the end of the book, but it's a very good novel. It will make you laugh and make you amazed!!! Although, it's magic realism, you should try keep an open mind. It's a different book that's all. But you'll love it!!!
Eva Luna.......2006-10-30
I have to remember that as much as I like the concept of "magical realism" I, for the most part, don't like the genre. I can think of two books I have actually enjoyed: Macunaíma by Mário de Andrade and The Yellow Sofa by Eca De Queiros. Most of the time the genre leaves me cold, confused and somewhat bored. There are often too many tangents and too much extraneous detail: Eva Luna has these problems.
I wanted to read Eva Luna after having enjoyed Daughter of Fortune back in 2003 and having had a moderate enjoyment of Zorro in 2005, although I had felt the author hadn't really understood the character. While there are some beautifully written passages in Eva Luna they didn't flow together to create a feeling of a coherent story or a plot that was actually going somewhere. Nor, though, did it feel like it was written strictly as a mood piece. Poor Eva seemed to be forced to tread water in the middle of all that flowing prose, bobbing her head up whenever the story required her to be present in a scene.
Eva Luna starts as a memoir of an illegitimate daughter of a maid and an indian. While Eva Luna continues to narrate the story of her life, she is but a passive witness to a disparate group of odd balls who end up becoming political revolutionaries. Their stories are so much more interesting than Luna's. Her constant rambling drags down the story and her role in all of this beyond reporter and maybe lover isn't clear.
Magical book from a magical author.......2006-08-29
Isabel Allende has yet to disappoint me. Her books are delightful. I was introduced to her work through "Daughter of Fortune" and I've been hooked ever since. After having read almost everything Allende has published, Eva Luna remains one of my favorites. The characters and story are larger than life, but still somehow relatable. Follow this one up with "The Stories of Eva Luna".
