Introduction to the Cellular and Molecular Biology of Cancer
Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0198548540 |
Book Description
The third edition of this repected textbook has been extensively revised and updated by the authors and editors to achieve the same objectives as the two earlier editions -- to provide a relatively brief but comprehensive introduction to the initiation, development, and treatment of cancer. After an introduction describing the pathology and natural history of the disease, subsequent chapters survey particular areas of research, concentrating on the principles involved and recent developments. Each topic is reviewed authoritatively by acknowledged experts, in a way that will be understood by non-experts in the field. The chapters on epidemiology, genetic and chromosome changes, oncogenes, chemical and radiation carcinogenesis, growth factors, the biology of human leukaemia, and hormones and cancer have been rewritten and/or extensively revised and new developments resulting from the wide application of current techniques in cellular and molecular biology to the study of cancer are included. Other chapters have been revised and brought up to date, and new chapters are inclueed on cytokines and cancer, the molecular pathology of cancer, and cancer prevention and screening. Introduction to the Molecular and Celluar Bilogy of Cancer provides a general survey of the whole field of cancer as a basis for research and will serve as a valuable introduction to students and scientists new to the field.Customer Reviews:

Book Description
This new edition of Introduction to the Cellular and Molecular Biology of Cancer provides a comprehensive overview of cancer biology, covering the current status of both research and treatment. For the student or new researcher the breadth of cancer research can appear daunting, yet a broad understanding is essential for translation of laboratory findings into the clinic. Within the broad scope of the book, each topic is reviewed authoritatively by experts in the field, and the accompanying bibliographies allow rapid access to the relevant current literature. The book covers topics extending from the molecular alterations found in cancer cells and their causes to the current range of approaches to treatment. Since the publication of the previous edition in 1997 there has been unprecedented progress in cancer research: this is reflected by an extensive revision of all the material, and the addition of eight new chapters, covering DNA repair, epigenetic events, the cell cycle, cell immortalisation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, animal models, the genome, transcriptome and proteome, radiotherapy and molecular radiotherapy, immunotherapy, and gene therapy. The fourth edition of this popular book will serve as a text for both undergraduate and postgraduate use and also as an introduction for clinicians and scientists new to the field.Customer Reviews:

Cell Cycle
ANDREW MURRAY Manufacturer: Oxford University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0195095294 |
Book Description
In the last decade there has been a revolution in our comprehension of how cells grow and divide. Results from experiments on yeast, embryos, and cultured mammalian cells have unified seemingly disparate viewpoints into a single set of principles for normal cellular reproduction in plants, animals and bacteria. Written by two leading participants in that revolution, The Cell Cycle provides the first thorough, authoritative account of the new philosophy of normal cellular reproduction and how it emerged. It is a vivid portrayal of the molecular logic of the cell: how the cell engine induces DNA replication and chromosome replication; how the integrity of genetic information is preserved; and how cell size and environmental signals regulate the cycle of growth and division. By describing important breakthroughs in their historical and experimental context, The Cell Cycle traces the development of the new vision of cell biology and shows its relevance to other areas of modern biology. It is the ideal introduction to the current understanding of cell growth and division for advanced undergraduate and graduate level cell biology courses.Customer Reviews:

Computing With Cells And Atoms: An Introduction to Quantum, DNA and Membrane Computing
Cristian S. Calude Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0748408991 |
Book Description
At the turning of the millennium, a switch in computing technology is forecasted and looked for. Two main directions of research, both based on quite unconventional ideas are most promising - quantum computing and molecular computing. In the last few years, both of these methods have been intensely investigated. The present book is the first "friendly" presentation of basic ideas in these exciting areas. The style is rigorous, but without entering into excessive technicalities. Equal attention is paid to the main practical results reported so far and the main theoretical developments. The book is written for the educated layman and is self-contained, including all the necessary facts from mathematics, computer science, biology and quantum mechanics.
