Book Description

The third edition of this repected textbook has been extensively revised and updated by the authors and editors to achieve the same objectives as the two earlier editions -- to provide a relatively brief but comprehensive introduction to the initiation, development, and treatment of cancer. After an introduction describing the pathology and natural history of the disease, subsequent chapters survey particular areas of research, concentrating on the principles involved and recent developments. Each topic is reviewed authoritatively by acknowledged experts, in a way that will be understood by non-experts in the field. The chapters on epidemiology, genetic and chromosome changes, oncogenes, chemical and radiation carcinogenesis, growth factors, the biology of human leukaemia, and hormones and cancer have been rewritten and/or extensively revised and new developments resulting from the wide application of current techniques in cellular and molecular biology to the study of cancer are included. Other chapters have been revised and brought up to date, and new chapters are inclueed on cytokines and cancer, the molecular pathology of cancer, and cancer prevention and screening. Introduction to the Molecular and Celluar Bilogy of Cancer provides a general survey of the whole field of cancer as a basis for research and will serve as a valuable introduction to students and scientists new to the field.

4 out of 5 stars Concise introduction to cancer biology.......2001-01-21

This book is really helpful for understanding the basic molecular and biological principles of neoplasia. It is a good start for those not familiarized with cancer (both students and researchers) since it covers a wide range of subjects from biology of tumor formation and spread to chemotherapy and epidemiology. Highly recommended

Book Description

This new edition of Introduction to the Cellular and Molecular Biology of Cancer provides a comprehensive overview of cancer biology, covering the current status of both research and treatment. For the student or new researcher the breadth of cancer research can appear daunting, yet a broad understanding is essential for translation of laboratory findings into the clinic. Within the broad scope of the book, each topic is reviewed authoritatively by experts in the field, and the accompanying bibliographies allow rapid access to the relevant current literature. The book covers topics extending from the molecular alterations found in cancer cells and their causes to the current range of approaches to treatment. Since the publication of the previous edition in 1997 there has been unprecedented progress in cancer research: this is reflected by an extensive revision of all the material, and the addition of eight new chapters, covering DNA repair, epigenetic events, the cell cycle, cell immortalisation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, animal models, the genome, transcriptome and proteome, radiotherapy and molecular radiotherapy, immunotherapy, and gene therapy. The fourth edition of this popular book will serve as a text for both undergraduate and postgraduate use and also as an introduction for clinicians and scientists new to the field.

5 out of 5 stars A great primer for researchers.......2006-04-04

I'm a mathematics Ph.D. student who's working in computational oncology, meaning that I study cancer from a mathematical/engineering point of view (conservation of mass, oxygen and glucose transport, etc.) and create computer models for study. This biophysical viewpoint has been fruitful, but I've found that to make further progress, an understanding of the cellular biology is required. Furthermore, a lack of vocabulary makes it difficult to communicate with the clinical/medical community.

That's where this book comes in: it gives a great, expansive overview of cancer that is difficult to come by in the mathematical world. In places, it is perhaps too detail-oriented (which specific proteins do what and how, e.g., in DNA repair), but that's the nature of the beast, and I feel that it's very important for mathematical biologists to be exposed to this. The text gives a good sampling ranging from epidemiology, genetics and epigenetics (gene expression), oncogenes, tumor suppresor genes, DNA repair, cell cycle, and most approaches to therapy.

Because this edition was published in late 2005, it's quite up-to-date, and in that regard, the papers cited are very useful to the student and researcher for further exploration and paper writing. Probably one of the greater weaknesses is in the figures in the earlier genetics sections: the diagrams are not particularly helpful in actually illustrating the complex processes. Overall, though, this has been very helpful for me in bridging the gap between mathematical biology and oncology. I'd highly recommend this text for anybody who desires to learn more about the biology of the cancer, regardless of where they're coming from.

Book Description

In the last decade there has been a revolution in our comprehension of how cells grow and divide. Results from experiments on yeast, embryos, and cultured mammalian cells have unified seemingly disparate viewpoints into a single set of principles for normal cellular reproduction in plants, animals and bacteria. Written by two leading participants in that revolution, The Cell Cycle provides the first thorough, authoritative account of the new philosophy of normal cellular reproduction and how it emerged. It is a vivid portrayal of the molecular logic of the cell: how the cell engine induces DNA replication and chromosome replication; how the integrity of genetic information is preserved; and how cell size and environmental signals regulate the cycle of growth and division. By describing important breakthroughs in their historical and experimental context, The Cell Cycle traces the development of the new vision of cell biology and shows its relevance to other areas of modern biology. It is the ideal introduction to the current understanding of cell growth and division for advanced undergraduate and graduate level cell biology courses.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Read This Book.......2002-02-20

Really, you need to read this book. Nowadays nobody can ignore the cell cycle since everything in biology either feeds into the cell cycle, is controlled by the cell cycle, or, in most cases, both. Because the cell cycle is so important, there has been a flood of information about its molecular components, but what this book does is take all that information and place it in context by laying out the overall computational logic of cell cycle control. So, although the book does a great job summarizing the extant data at the time of its writing (which is now a little bit out of date unfortunately), its real value is in providing the conceptual hooks onto which the data can be hung. In this regard, it is still just as effective as it was when it first came out in print, and it is still highly recommended for anyone interested in this subject.

    Book Description

At the turning of the millennium, a switch in computing technology is forecasted and looked for. Two main directions of research, both based on quite unconventional ideas are most promising - quantum computing and molecular computing. In the last few years, both of these methods have been intensely investigated. The present book is the first "friendly" presentation of basic ideas in these exciting areas. The style is rigorous, but without entering into excessive technicalities. Equal attention is paid to the main practical results reported so far and the main theoretical developments. The book is written for the educated layman and is self-contained, including all the necessary facts from mathematics, computer science, biology and quantum mechanics.

                                                  Description:
A novel molecular AND logic gate 1 is demonstrated based on the competition between fluorescence and photoinduced electron transfer (PET). It is constructed according to a 'receptor"2-spacer-fluorophore-spacer-receptor"1-spacer-fluorophore-spacer-receptor"2' format where receptor"1 is a tertiary amine, receptor"2 is a benzo-15-crown-5 ether and the fluorophore is an anthracene moiety, which are separated from each other by methylene spacers. The fluorescence response in methanol is significantly enhanced only when both H^+ and Na^+ are the inputs at high enough concentrations in accordance with AND logic. Cs^+ behaves similarly to Na^+, but with a lower fluorescence enhancement, whereas the other alkali metal cations are not effective. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry provides evidence for formation of 1:1 and 1:2 (1:metal) complexes with alkali cations, and formation of a 1:2:1 (1:metal:proton) complex in the additional presence of acid.

                                                    Description:
The distance dependence of photoinduced electron transfer in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) duplex was investigated using the ''TAP cassette'' systems of the general formula (AT)"6A"nXA"9"-"n (X denote guanine (G) or cytosine (C)). The tetrakis-9-acridinyl peptide (TAP) binds tightly with (AT)"6 duplex region showing strong fluorescence that was not quenched by the A"nXA"9"-"n single-stranded region. Quenching was observed after duplex formation with the complementary T"9"-"nXT"n strand (G-C pairing), showing clear dependence on the distance between the TAP and a guanine. An extremely low @b value of 0.22 was obtained in our electron transfer (ET) system that suggests exceptional good mediation of ET process. Experiments with G-mismatches showed negligible quenching for systems with guanine separated by more than one AT base pair that indicated rather inefficient ET process for duplexes containing disrupted @p-electronic system.

"Treasure Island" is probably the first thing that springs to mind from hearing the name Robert Louis Stevenson. "Kidnapped," "Black Arrow" and other classic tales of high adventure sprung from his pen, leading more than one child to desperately wish for a one-eyed Pirate to stroll into his life. But like his other famous creation, Dr. Jekyll, Stevenson had his darker face, and some tales not so happy.

It is this darker side at play in "Graphic Classics: Robert Louis Stevenson." In the same vein as the Edgar Allen Poe and HP Lovecraft collections, Stevenson is presented in his justifiable role as a master of the weird tale, at play in the fields of the human psyche. Fitting collaborators have been found for each story, lending new elements and insight to the already insightful tales.

                                                        Included in this volume are:

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - The key tale of this collection, and a brilliant adaptation. Two artists are given reign, with a transformation of art as Mr. Hyde takes over. The basics of this story are as familiar as Dracula and Frankenstein, but I had never actually read the authentic original until now.

Verses and Fables - Taking from Stevenson's vast collection of poems and short stories, this is a showcase of erotic, fantastic and sometimes brutal fables. "The Land of Nod" is a poem I have loved since I was a child, but didn't know it was Stevenson. "Now Bare to the Beholders" eye is a seductive poetic striptease, with gorgeous illustrations.

A Brief Literary Life - As in other collections, a brief illustrated biography of Stevenson. Full of witty illustrations and references.

The Suicide Club - A dark tale of bored dilettantes seeking excitement, who wind up with more than they bargained for. An evil game of chance and men who seek death.

The Crumb Brothers on Treasure Island - Maxon Crumb tells the true tale of how Stevenson famously influenced the comic legends Robert and Charles Crumb. Included in Robert Crumbs "Treasure Island Days."

The Nixie - A beautifully illustrated fairy tale. Haunting and poetic.

The Bottle Imp - A sweet and dangerous cautionary tale about the dangers of getting what you wish for, and playing with magic. Illustrated to take full use of the Hawaiian influences of the story. Very enjoyable.
