Book Description

The only volume to deal specifically with the mid-Atlantic region, this practical guide describes in detail the 88 terrestrial mammals found there as well as the 33 marine species that inhabit the offshore waters. The authors offer expert descriptions of each species, including feeding habits, activity cycles, reproductive biology, and relation to other animals and humans. By emphasizing the relationships between mammals and their environments, the authors reveal how these animals live throughout the year. They guide readers to an appreciation of mammalian life and a keen awareness of the importance of conservation and habitat preservation.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book - lots of great details.......2005-02-21

Really interesting book. I originally bought this just as a guide to learn more about the folks that live in our back yard like the opossums, raccoons, skunks and others who frequent our bird feeding areas. But there's so much more in here. I had no idea we had so many different moles, voles, woodland rats and mice, for example. Also animals that I didn't realize were here like weasels, fox squirrels, minks, and others. Bats are covered here too which was a treat. For each animal there's a color photo, a description of the animal, distribution and abundance, a map of its range, habitat, and natural history. I was especially interested when I first opened the book and flipped to porcupines - I knew they had all been killed off in VA but there's a neat description of them as well as info on the occasional sighting that has occurred. Really a great book - I'm so glad to have found it.

4 out of 5 stars marvelous field guide.......2001-03-17

It's a hardcover, so not the most comfortable field guide to throw in a backpack, but I don't have any other complaints about this book.

Animal profiles are accompanied by excellent color photographs, basic statistics about each animal (distribution, habitat, abundance, etc.), and a shaded map outlining just where each animal's distribution is. Entries for each animal are detailed enough, but don't seem to go on so long that a person would lose interest.

One more gripe: pictures of the animals feet, so that pawprints could be identified easily, would have been a welcome inclusion here. The Simon and Schuster's Guide To Mammals, by Boitani, is an inexpensive book that includes this feature. It might be a helpful second book to get on the topic.

It's an exciting book for young naturalists, too, who will likely get stirred up just by seeing some of the photos (star-nosed mole, northern flying squirrel, big brown bat, etc.).

Essays on conservation, the region, and tips on observation precede the main body of the book. The essays are short and well-written. They should be helpful to anyone who wants to scout out some mammals in the Carolinas, Virginia, or Maryland.

5 out of 5 stars The best book to expand an existing knowledge about palms........1998-03-13

I'm a novice interested in the great variety of the palms. I'm also interested in taxonomy (classification). Having read several general books on palms (learning many of the genera and how to grow them), I wanted the "big picture" of how they all fit together. Genera Palmarum is perhaps the gold standard for palm taxonomy. Every palm (200 genera) is included, and given a place. One can immediately locate a genus, and discover its defining characteristics (as well as superb line drawings of a representative species). One can then discover how the genus differs from other closely related genera.

This book, originally published in 1976 is just to dated I.M.O. for anybody looking to cruise the caribbean. I must admit I don't know of any other book that covers all of the carribean the way this one does, but I would rather spend my money on more up to date guides. Would I buy again? NO.

            Book Description

The world remembers Gandhi as a political leader who led his people to freedom without violence. Here Easwaran examines Gandhi’s personal significance: how he transformed himself, and how we can apply his discoveries in a smaller way to resolve conflicts in our own lives. This intimate portrait shows how we can use Gandhi’s example in the home, the workplace, and the community – wherever people disagree.
“Readers will never forget the look and sound of Gandhi the Man. Here Easwaran reveals Gandhi’s belief that beneath the ‘mask’ of self-obsession ‘is all the glory of our real self: complete fearlessness, unconditional love and abiding joy.’” – San Francisco Chronicle

            5 out of 5 stars Gandhi.......2007-05-15

This book was recommended to me by a friend who teaches English at the local college. What a great book! It's not a hefty read - but you feel you get a complete overview of the man and his life's contributions. Highly recommend this book at anyone whether they are a long time Gandhi fan, or someone who just wants to know more about this amazing world leader.

5 out of 5 stars Great book to take you to the heart of the man.......2006-10-29

Gandhi, in my opinion, is one person we must not forget to get acquaited with if we are searching for the truth about ourselves. He became known for his contributions to the independence of India through his philosophy of non-violence. There have been many books written about the historical events comprising that journey. But, as he himself had said, the more significant journey that he took was one that was internal. The real "war" he was fighting was the spiritual war inside him. This book by Eknath Easwaran is a rare book that focuses entirely on that aspect of the great man. I would highly recommend this book if one is trying to find one's way to the heart of the "great soul".

5 out of 5 stars Gandhi; his life is his message.......2006-10-27

The outstanding story of Gandhi's life shows us how a shy, insecure young man could transform himself into a political, social and spiritual giant. Gandhi, as a supreme representative of a very old culture, understood the momentum of the age he lived in and was able to translate his wisdom into practical solutions using the power of non-violence. Amongst others, he convinced the British to leave India, and was the living example of the power of love, respect and non-violence. Illustrating the power of universal truths common to all religions I highly recommend this book to everyone interested in human values and our future.

5 out of 5 stars Readable and inspiring.......2006-05-20

This is a very readable and insiring book about one of the greatest figures of the 20th century, with many photos that make Gandhi's life feel even more real. The effectiveness of Gandhi's application of nonviolence is well explained, both in his life history and in an interesting appendix about nonviolence in the world today.

            5 out of 5 stars A great work.......2006-03-22

This book gives great insights into Gandhi's spiritual life - which was the basis of all his social and political movements.

Most of the fairy tales that we grew up with we know thanks to the Brothers Grimm. Jack Zipes, one of the more astute critics of fairy tales, explores the romantic myth of the brothers as wandering scholars, who gathered "authentic" tales from the peasantry. Bringing to bear his own critical expertise as well and new biographical information, Zipes examines the interaction between the Grimms' lives and their work. He reveals the Grimms' personal struggle to overcome social prejudice and poverty, as well as their political efforts--as scholars and civil servants--toward unifying the German states. By deftly interweaving the social, political, and personal elements of the lives of the Brothers Grimm, Zipes rescues them from sentimental obscurity. No longer figures in a fairy tale, the Brothers Grimm emerge as powerful creators, real men who established the fairy tale as one of our great literary institutions. Part biography, part critical assessment, and part social history, The Brothers Grimm provides a complex and very real story about fairy tales and the modern world.

                                  2 out of 5 stars A mishmash of everything.......2006-03-07

This book tries to cover a lot of ground, but in the end you get a sense that it has gotten you anywhere. The first impression I got was that this book was actually a bunch of journal articles thrown together because there isn't much sense of continuity to this book. It doesn't have an overall theme and the topics covered don't seem to connect well. It starts off with a short biography of the Grimms, so far so good. After that, it covers the orgins of the tales, a little dry, but not bad. After that, there's a chapter about how the Grimm tales indoctrinate children into the bourgeoisie. The Marxism seems a little dated. After that, out of the blue, you get a chapter on Henri Pourrault, an obscure writer of fairy tales. It's never explained why this writer is in this book, but I guess the author really liked this journal article and couldn't resist throwing it in.

After this, it gets really weird. You get a chapter about how fairy tales are all about childhood sexual abuse. If that doesn't kill your mood to read fairy tales, then the following chapter in which the author attacks the Grimm tales as outdated and obsolete and advocates the rewriting of the tales for more modern perspectives will. One gem that the author singles out for praise is a rewriting of Cinderella. In this version, Cinderella is a labor organizer who organizes all the workers in her kingdom. The prince, impressed by her accomplishments, falls in lover with her and proposes. However, Cinderella refuses to betray the worker and rejects the prince. In the end, Cinderella moves to America and the prince commits suicide over the heartbreak. Wow, the kids will love that one. It's not even entertaining or enlightening for adults and borders on masochistic. That's some of the nonsense that you'll run into in this book. I really recommend that you pass on this.

The Brothers Grimm: From Enchanted Forests To The Modern World by Jack Zipes (Professor of German, University of Minnesota) is an informed and informative examination of the lives of the famous fairy tale gatherers, writers, and preservers, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. From their humble origins amidst poverty and prejudice to their ultimate contribution to literature as a whole, The Brothers Grimm is a truly fascinating account and a "must-read" for serious students of European fantasy literature and folklore.
