Customer Reviews:
An excellent reference for your nature walks through unfamiliar territory.......2007-04-20
This book is an excellent reference book for the nature lover who isn't up to speed regarding the particulars. For each tree, there is a blowup photo of the leaves, a smaller one of the bark and a black and white sketch of the general appearance of the tree from a distance. There is also the English and scientific names and some textual explanation of the tree. This explanation is a paragraph description of the appearance, a paragraph on how to identify it and one sentence descriptions of the habitat and geographical range where it is found.
A great introduction for kids.......2006-11-11
Ok, this isn't the full blown Audubon Tree book(s), but at this price, what do you expect?
This and all the Pocket Guides are great stocking stuffers for kids, especially for those blessed with parents who think getting the latest Gameboy or Hero Clix is more important (hint hint, you know who you are).
As they get older, their interests will become more defined and you'll know what (more expensive/extensive) particular field guide(s) to buy them.
Yeah, it's cliche, but a child's mind *is* a terrible thing to waste.
I've bought all the Audubon Pocket guides more than once (kept a few for myself, yes they're that good) and I've only been disappointed with one (most of the photos were blurry). No, I won't say which one, as it may not matter to someone else (but I'm picky about that kind of stuff).
Hand them out to your nieces and nephews, and any other kid that can't tell an oak from a pine tree or quartz from slate or Pleiades from Orion or ... well, you get the picture.
They've thanked me later on(and actually meant it, lol) and they'll thank you too.
Small enough to use while backpacking.......2006-08-30
I like these small Audubon books because they are light and easy to use. The pictures are clear and the information is easy to read and use. They aren't as detailed as the bigger Audubon books, but then the larger ones are heavier and in a back pack, being light weight is everything.
Disappointed.......2001-07-11
Bought this book to take on walks/hikes. The first time out I could not find anything on two out of the first four trees of which I was not familiar!! Very limited coverage of any trees other than those we all know from everyday experience---rather a disappointment!!
A Handy Informative Guide for Trees.......2000-03-29
I bought this book because I was tired of only being able to identify a handful of the most distinctive trees. This small, colorful and easy-to-use guide was a godsend. It it paperback and can easily fit into a breast pocket, yet the full-page color photos of leaf shapes and sizes are adequate - even for a novice like me - to identify trees. It shows tree silhouettes, bark types and leaves and explains about various tree families to help us all be able to distinguish the trees from the proverbial forest! The information, organization and size of this book make it a "strong-buy" for anyone with an interest in "knowing" trees better!

Little substance for the cost.......1999-07-06
This book is a 4"X6" book with pictures of only 79 flowers. Though it is a pocket guide, someone interested in flower identification should probably pick up the National Audobon Society Field Guide to North America Wildflowers-- Western Region instead for only a few bucks more. The field guide (4" by 7.5")has over 650 color photos of wildflowers.

Jews don't always put Germany on the top of their travel destination list, but the fact is that outside of Israel, no country contains more important and beautiful Jewish historical sites than does Germany. Weissensee, the largest Jewish cemetery in Europe, is in Berlin, there's a lovely ritual bath (mikveh) in Friedberg dating back to the 13th century, and there's a rare, surviving Jugendstil synagogue in Ausburg. From Aachen to Würzburg, nearly 200 sites left out of most guide books are described and detailed, including what there is to see (often with color pictures), what the history is, and most importantly, how to get there.
In Ansbach there's a synagogue from the 18th century that escaped destruction during the "Reichskristallnacht" of 1938. Its Torah was burned, but the building itself was left unhurt. Annual memorial services are held on November 9 (the date of kristallnacht) in this Baroque synagogue, attended by Catholics, Protestants, and Jews from throughout Bavaria. In Hofgeismar there's a fine Judaica museum that tells the story, through its archive of texts and pictures, of a Jewish community that dates back to 1470, and there's a cemetery that was started in 1695. The last burial of a Hofgeismar Jew was in 1935, but the cemetery contains Jewish displaced persons who died in 1946 and 1947, plus a memorial of a gravestone and a buried piece of soap, erected in 1945 by Jewish concentration camp survivors.
Documenting the history of individual settlements throughout Germany, as well as what remains to be seen of them, this unique guide keeps the history alive and makes possible an unusual German tour. --Stephanie Gold

Ages 12 and up. Best buds Tibby, Carmen, Lena and Bridget are back with their magical pair of shared jeans in Girls in Pants: The Third Summer of the Sisterhood. Each summer brings new and difficult challenges, as the perennially separated friends discover afresh this last season before college. Tibby struggles with the idea of close friend Brian becoming her boyfriend, and their fragile relationship is soon tested by a tragedy in her immediate family. Carmen doesn't know how to react when she finds out that her middle-aged mom is pregnant, and Bridget is unpleasantly surprised to be reunited with the boy who broke her heart two summers ago. Finally, Lena, still coming to terms with the loss of her first love, tries to convince her strict father that art school is a better career path than Greek restaurant management. But through every crisis, each girl is assured of the love and support of the created sisterhood when she pulls on the denim armor of the cherished, and by now, a bit fragrant ("Rule # 1. You must never wash the Pants.") Traveling Pants.
Full of homey platitudes about life, love and the pursuit of perfect jeans, Girls in Pants occasionally reads like a lengthy Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul entry. But often that's precisely the kind of friendly reassurance female readers are looking for, and fans of the wildly popular series who've journeyed every summer with the "Septembers" will find much to laugh and cry about in this volume. --Jennifer Hubert
Book Description
The Pants first came to us at the perfect moment. That is, when we were splitting up for the first time. It was two summers ago when they first worked their magic, and last summer when they shook up our lives once again. You see, we don’t wear the Pants year-round. We let them rest so they are extra powerful when summer comes. (There was the time this spring when Carmen wore them to her mom’s wedding, but that was a special case.)
Now we’re facing our last summer together. In September we go to college. And it’s not like one of those TV shows where all of us magically turn up at the same college. We’re going to four different colleges in four different cities (but all within four hours of one another—that was our one rule). We’re headed off to start our real lives.
Tomorrow night at Gilda’s we’ll launch the Pants on their third summer voyage. Tomorrow begins the time of our lives. It’s when we’ll need our Pants the most.

Another Great Read.......2007-06-27
I stayed up till 3 o'clock in the morning reading this book, it was so good. This 3rd installment in the sisterhood of the traveling pants series was a great, easy summer read. Ann Brashares did another fabulous job on this novel. Once again this one, tells the story of the four girls as they embark on new journeys in life. High school is over and the girls are saddend by the fact that this is their last summer together. Carmen gets a job taking care of Lena's grandmother and she convines the Kiligares to let her go back to Greece. Carmen finds out her mother is pregnant and Tibby helps deliver the baby, while having a strong relationship with Brian. Bridget goes to a soccer camp in Pennslyvania where she mets up again with Diana, her soccer friend, and Eric, former coach whom she has fallen in love with. Bridget gets back to gether with Eric, and things work out great. Lena is caught up with her job and wants to go to art school, which her father doesn't approve of, so she works to get a scholarship and succeeds. Overall this book was another great book written by a great author. You should definitely read this series!
Fast read!!.......2007-04-28
I loved the second and third books of the Sisterhood. (I had to wait for a bit until the fourth one came out but loved that one just as much.) Brashares's writing flows so smoothly - it's a fantastic and realistic take on girls' lives. I'm just heartbroken that this series has come to an end. Other suggested books to get you through the summer: Sunshine by NSLee Sunshine, Stargirl (Readers Circle) by Jerry Spinelli.
Girls in Pants.......2007-04-05
I love the Sisterhood of the Traveling pants books, I can relate to the problems dealing with friends and family. I bet other people will feel the same way after reading this book. Although this was a good book, it wasn't the best out of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series. This book has major suspense. I couldn't put it down because I wanted to know what would happen next in the girls' lives. I recommend this book to people who loved the first two books and, to peolple who love to laugh!
Girls in Pants Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.......2007-04-01
I was pleased that the books just keep getting better and better as the series goes along, I can't wait to read the next one. Awesome read. Highly recommend this series of books.
Abagayle Johnson's Review.......2007-03-09
I liked this book because of the exciting parts in it. Carmen's mom, Christina, is going to have a baby. Bridget goes to a soccer camp to coach a team of her own. When she arrives she finds an unexpected surprise.
Bridget, Lena, Carmen, and Tibby graduate from high school. They have only one summer left before they go off to college. Bridget goes to a soccer camp in Pennsylvania to coach a team. Carmen, Lena, and Tibby stay in Washington D.C. Carmen gets a job watching Valia, Lena's grandmother. Lena's father wanted her close so he made her move. Lena goes to art classes to improve her artistic skills. Tibby gets a job working at a movie theater.
I would recommend this book to someone who enjoys reading about a strong bond between friends and one very special pair of pants. There is also a little bit of romance in the book that I think makes it so wonderful. This is one of the greatest book I have ever read and I know that you will love it to.
This book in my opinion was better than the first and second books. It also had more action and suspense in it which I think makes it better.

Book Description
This
second edition brings the reader on par with the flurry of research results generated during the last two decades in the theory and applications of multidimensional systems. This book has an abundance of examples to illustrate advanced concepts and brings out, for the first time, in a text book setting the algorithms for bivariate polynomial matrix factorization results that form the basis of two-dimensional systems theory.
The reader is alerted to the reasons for the difficulties in generalization to the higher dimensional case. Algorithms and their implementation using symbolic algebra are emphasized.

Book Description
Operator theory, system theory, scattering theory, and the theory of analytic functions of one complex variable are deeply related topics, and the relationships between these theories are well understood. When one leaves the setting of one operator and considers several operators, the situation is much more involved. There is no longer a single underlying theory, but rather different theories, some of them loosely connected and some not connected at all. These various theories, which one could call "multidimensional operator theory", are topics of active and intensive research. The present volume contains a selection of papers in multidimensional operator theory. Topics considered include the non-commutative case, function theory in the polydisk, hyponormal operators, hyperanalytic functions, and holomorphic deformations of linear differential equations. The volume will be of interest to a wide audience of pure and applied mathematicians, electrical engineers and theoretical physicists.
Book Description
This volume contains six peer-refereed articles written on the occasion of the workshop
Operator theory, system theory and scattering theory: multidimensional generalizations and related topics, held at the Department of Mathematics of the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev during the period June 26-July 1, 2005. The papers present the newest developments in key directions of current research in complex analysis and operator theory. Topics considered include Schur analysis, hierarchical semiseparable matrices, canonical forms for pairs of quaternionic matrices, the theory of homogeneous operators, algebras of fractions of continuous functions, and moment problems. Schur analysis in its various aspects occupies more than half of the volume, and moments problems have also an important place in the papers presented here.
The volume will be of interest to a wide audience of pure and applied mathematicians, electrical engineers and theoretical physicists.

Thoughts about Chocolate Men, Editors, and non-Environmentalists.......2006-06-22
Cons: #1 When I read a book full of editing mistakes, it makes the book and the author seem rushed. At the beginning, the author says that the editing was excruciating and thanks six people. But I don't understand how six people couldn't find the 50+ glaring errors I saw. Commas were out of place, doubled verbs, repeated terms, etc. If the topic wasn't so interesting, I'd have pegged the book as sloppy and not bought it. But I did. #2 I've never read a collection of stories where no writers were given credit but the main one. I found it disappointing that the TOC doesn't give main attributors or even a mass amount of names in the thank you's. #3 When I first opened the book, I was weary because it read with the same angry-black-man-even-more-mad-at-The-Man logic that I hear daily. Not to say the points weren't true, but I was hoping to see some personal responsibility as well. It took awhile for that to come. I wanted to read antecdotes, not complaints. #4 I absolutely did not like "Recycled Properties." It has the same self-destructive logic that harms black people's health and their environment. I am a vegetarian who refuses to litter, and to act like nature and animals being slaughtered and tortured is secondary annoys me. The same black folks who yawn at PETA will lose their minds if they don't see meat on their dinner table and complain about how bad the neighborhood looks. It is this same self-destructive logic that leaves areas like the projects in worse shape than it already is. This story reminds me of someone who kicks a dog and pees on the wall because he's mad at the way someone treats him. When a person is this selfish and only worries about himself, this is repeating the same logic of racist white people: It doesn't concern me, it's not my culture, so I don't care. It doesn't hurt to recycle a bottle. #5 I also was not a fan of "Good Morning" because it left out all of the rude, tacky comments that a sista may have heard BEFORE she got on the elevator. There are some people who speak with polite intentions but many more with alterior motives and after awhile, a woman is on her guard altogether. Men take the easy route and blame it on money, but in my personal experiences, it's demeanor. Clothes don't make up for attitude, and sometimes men can be disrespectful with their eyes regardless of their words. #6 The last thing that annoyed me was all of the symbols in place of curse words. The book was for black men, created by black men, and odds are that the readers will be grown. We can tell what the words mean and the symbols all over the place were distracting, especially when the first letter was left out because readers may spend more time trying to figure out why there weren't enough symbols for one curse word, too many for the next, and letters left out for others.
Pros: I thought this was an extremely intriguing book and I'd recommend many. My favorite stories were "Attention NASA, Take Off Has Been Denied," "Lockdown," "Revolution Is Between Apathy Boulevard and Complacency Street," "Do Not Let the Reflections Be Real," "Flashing Lights," "Watch Out A Snake With A Knife," "Don't Forget," "I Know You Saw Me," "I Don't Want It," "Evidence Always Found But Never Lost," and "Did You Hear That?" These brothas told stories so realistic and so I wish they would've been given proper attribution. The stores delve into a vast amount of topics like the man's side of a woman being pregnant and having no rights; the kinship on the basketball court; the belittlement in jail; positive black historical leaders; black-on-black crime; the stress of seeing a police car following a black man's car; the "snake"-in-a-barrel mentality; being accused of whiteness just because you're educated; AIDs, sistas trying to trap women by leaving their belongings behind; and music that degrades women. There were so many dead-on points that I believe black men will give each other dap on, cry about, laugh about, and black women NEED to read, specifically "Evidence Always Found, But Never Lost." I never did understand the logic in leaving your belongings behind, rather childish to me. I agreed with quite a few of the stores, learned some valuable information for my own writing, respected most of these brothas' perspective even if I didn't agree with others (MINUS the two mentioned in the "cons"), and think this book should turn into a discussion. I'd recommend this book for any multicultural course for those who want to learn the REAL life of a black man--and all the various parts of it. These writers delve into love, fatherhood, and all the rest of the subjects that any other human being goes through, just added a spin on it with less talked about issues. I'm sure it was therapeutic for these guys to be able to get their thoughts onto paper. Pretty good job, in my opinion.
A Chocaholics Poetic Dream.......2005-05-05
Chocolate Thoughts is a book filled with love, frustration, inspiration, and insight. I found the poetic essays heartfelt, and thought provoking without venturing into the offensive. S. James Guitard writes of a love so beautiful it leaps from the pages and plants a picture of it in your mind. His poems and essays on the oppressions and frustrations of a black man in white America manage to convey his message without slapping you in the face with it. His approach is subtle and smooth, actually speaking to his readers instead of screaming at them. As a lover of words, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to seeing more from this talented author.

Now that was fine writing.......2001-10-14
I read Chocolate Thoughts on a whim and I'm so glad I did. This collection of essays, poetry and stories is written straight from the heart of the author and remarkably it tells the story of black men from all walks on conciousness. I loved it and can't reccomend it enough. I'd like to give it six stars.
