Just Do It!.......2005-10-27

I love this book -- it's a great inspiration to travel in my own backyard. Too often we spend our weekends running errands, doing the laundry, cleaning house, etc. Do yourself a favor -- next weekend pick a chapter from this book and go somewhere! Each itinerary is easily done in a day. The maps are helpful and the descriptions of each location include some historical flavor. Instead of speeding through small towns on your way to somewhere else, you get a chance to explore for hidden gems. Even the smallest towns have an antique shop, BBQ joint, or interesting historical site that's worth a stop. Happy trails!

My Husband and I visited Houston, San Antonio & Austin, we only had a couple of weeks in which to fit in as much as we could. This book was a brilliant way to get the most from a short time. It helped us to enjoy our visit to the full. We hope to visit more of the USA and shall certainly use this type of book again.

I really enjoyed using Day Trips from San Antonio and Austin to plan several recent weekend excursions. I found the book very helpful and used it to plan a trip to Corpus Christi and another to the Hill Country. Even though I have lived in this area for over 20 years, I found many hidden treasures thanks to this guide!

This book is the prefect book to read before doing a water use survey for elementary kids. The book is cute, outrageous , funny and informational. The book introduces the principles of household plumbing, water supply and personal hygiene. I loved the illustrations. It is full of neat little tid bits and historical facts. Good job Yardley!

Adhesion is the crucial first stage in any infectious disease. It is therefore important to fully understand the mechanisms underlying bacterial adhesion so that we may be able to develop methods of maintaining our normal (protective) microflora, and of preventing pathogenic bacteria from initiating an infectious process. This book describes the bacterial structures responsible for adhesion and the molecular mechanisms underlying the adhesion process. A unique feature is that it also deals with the consequences of adhesion for both the adherent bacterium and the host cell/tissue to which it has adhered.

Stick With This One.......2004-06-11

Due to my evolving research, this book is as timely as it is well written. While the approach taken is predominantly a molecular genetics view to microbial adhesion, the chapter authors & editor have presented the wealth of information on this topic in a well organized manner.

Each chapter is well organized and every theory given is then supported with examples of scientific evidence. At the end of each chapter are pages of references that I have used to further my research (as will anyone else interested in this topic).

For the graphics, the editor has done an excellent job culling out the best. From basic gene/operon diagrams to electron micrographs to color plates and photographs, the authors and editor have judicially provided only sound clear graphics.

If you want a book that will provide a molecular approach to bacterial adhesion, this is an excellent starting point. While a few chapters are too limited in their applicablity to the overall solution of this issue, the rest more than make up for these minor shortfalls.

Keep in mind, this book is not for the novice from just any field of microbiology. Then again, neither is the subject. If you are involved in this growing field of research, this book will be an invaluable addition to your library.

In laboratories around the world the active principles in traditional herbal medicines are being isolated and characterized. A systematic effort at the Chinese Academy of Sciences is underway to identify the structure-activity relationships that result from the link between chemistry and medicine that is permitted by this data. This book, which provides the only systematic English-language description of the chemical structures and pharmacological effects of compounds active in traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs), is now in its second edition. The new edition provides English-language monographs on over 9000 chemicals isolated from nearly 4000 natural sources used in Chinese medicine and features the addition of in-depth bioactivity data for many of the compounds. Effects and indications of the medicines are included. Extensive indexing permits cross-referencing among English, Chinese and Latin names for natural medicinal sources, effects and indications, and the chemical components of the medicines.

The second edition of Traditional Chinese Medicines includes 2300 new compounds, 2400 additional plant sources, more CAS Registry Numbers, and more pharmacological data. The structure of the book has been extensively reorganised to make cross referencing the data much simpler. This new edition is therefore a substantial improvement on the first edition of this important reference on the structural chemistry of traditional Chinese medicines.

Disappointing.......2000-09-27

The authors ought to provide an index that relates the source herbs and the chemical compounds, so readers can know the active ingredients of each herb. Missing this most important index, I find the book almost useless.

On the other hand, the 3 indexes of names seem redundant.

All in all, the book seems under-prepared yet overpriced.

Disappointing.......2000-04-07

I was disappointed at the fact that several cross references that I happened to find are missing or incomplete. Mistakes of this kind are easy to correct and the authors should have done so before it was published. It was good to see the chemical structures of some constituents of Chinese Medicines being available in the book. However,judging from the title of the book, one would normally expect to see a similar amount of pages are dedicated to the medicinal applications of the medicines. Sadly, this is not the case in this book. Too brief and rough is the word for this part. It, therefore, seems to me that the book promises lots, yet delivers a little and is overpriced.
