                          Book Description

These two brand-new guide mark a departure for Frommers, and tap into a market of sophisticated travelers seeking in-depth regional guides to Europe. These regions draw repeat visitors to Italy and France, who have already seen the major tourist centers and are now interested in soaking up the flavor of a smaller region in the countryside. From the beaches of St-Tropez to the Cannes Film Festival, the Riviera has long been a chic destination, and weve combined it with the rustic pleasures and rich artistic heritage of Provence, which has grown in popularity ever since the publication of Peter Mayles A Year in Provence.Travelers to Italy often concentrate on Tuscany alone, since its rich in artistic treasures, Renaissance architecture, unspoiled villages, wineries, and terrific shopping buys. Renting a villa in Tuscany or Umbria is becoming increasingly popular, and Florence ranked #4 on the list of favorite international cities in the Cond Nast Traveler 1996 Readers Choice Awards.

1 out of 5 stars WARNING - Out of Date Edition.......2004-03-10

Warning to readers! We bought this book in March 2004. A more recent edition (called Florence, Tuscany & Umbria) came out in January 2004. This edition was written in 2001 and still quotes prices in lire! We're returning the book and swapping it for the other one.

5 out of 5 stars Best small-town Italy book on the market.......2002-03-08

If you're going on the whirlwind "Rome-Florence-Venice" tour, don't bother with this book. It isn't for you.

If you have a week or 2 to spend in central Italy, buy and read the whole book before you leave, and carry it with you everywhere.

My wife and I spent a month in Italy, and 2 weeks in Tuscany and Umbria. We had Rick Steeve's, Eyewitness, and Frommers with us. In large towns with good tourist infrastructure (Assisi, Sienna, etc) we found most of the books comparable. In the smaller towns where we usually spent our nights (Spoleto, Montepulciano, Sovana), only Frommers was worth looking at. We consistently found their hotel rooms most closely matched up with the written descriptions in the book, and their recommended restaraunts, while not as cheap as Rick Steve's, were very good.

Particularly if driving (which is really the only way to see this region), the maps and directions far surpassed the other 2 books. Great maps of almost every town, no matter how small. The only deficiency was the lack of marking of the inbound and outbound roads on the map. Once I figured out where I was entering the town from though, the maps in this book could take me anywhere.

In the final analysis, all 3 books were useful, but we used each differently. We looked at Rick Steves and Eyewitness each morning, but carried only Frommers with us during the day. When we go back, this will be the only book we take.

5 out of 5 stars A Guide That Will Make You Feel at Home.......2000-11-04

This was a wonderful guide with witty, opinionated, (accurate in my estimation) comprehensive comment on the many sights and scenes that Tuscany has to offer. We used this guide constantly and exhaustively in the one week we recently spent there. The restaurant and hotel recommendations were uniformly splendid and we were fortunate to discover a new town and a new pasta shape when we ate pici in the hilltop town of Montepulciano, where we would never have considered staying but for this guide. Although I would also have liked to have had a guide with pictures of the attractions, the attraction of this guide makes it well worth that slight quibble. I would highly recommend it to anyone going to the region and I will certainly use it, or a newer edition, upon my hopefully soon return.

5 out of 5 stars do not leave your hotel without it.......2000-10-28

This book was extremly usefull and accurate. As an example we could visit the Brolio Castle because we read that you have to find a rope, hang to it and wait until somebody opens the door. Two tourist who arrived before us this not entered...they did not carried the frommers.... All the directions, tips, locations of hotels, rating of resturants, where hundred percent accurate. I will never travel without my frommers. Congratulations.

                          4 out of 5 stars Frommer's TUscany & Umbria 2-nd addition.......2000-05-01

I found this book practical and usefull from the beginning - We havn't gone yet but the car rental information alone saved us $100 on a 4 day rental. It's a little heavy compaired to our other book but it looks like it covers Tuscany and Umbria thoroughly.

Umbria is called the ¿green heart of Italy¿. Not as famous as neighboring Tuscany, its timeless charms attract loyal visitors year after year, drawn to a bewitching, beautiful, unspoilt region. Having lived in Umbria for three years, Cadogan's Italy experts Dana Facaros and Michael Pauls take visitors to the heart of the region showcasing, magnificent Assisi--the home of St. Francis, Gubbio--a medieval gem that's said to rival Siena, and the extraordinary Renaissance treasures of Spoleto. Explore the festivals and traditions of Perugia and Orvieto along the Tiber Valley, taking in fine wines and the best olive oil in the world on the way. Fully revised to include more maps and eye-catching color photography, it also features updated, detailed listings of markets, vineyards, hotels, and restaurants--all serving the hearty traditional food Umbria is renowned for.

From its inception, this NSF-sponsored learning system was hailed as a welcome departure from traditional approaches, both in terms of organization and delivery of content. BioInquiry tells the story of the process of science, and so is organized to trace scientists' journey to biological understanding, beginning with Darwin and evolution. The Third Edition's unique integration of multimedia - developed in tandem with the text and designed to provide additional dimension to key topics - is now seamlessly housed in the powerful engine of Egrade Plus. The result is an integrated product that presents a more realistic approach to what non-science majors need to be informed citizens and scientifically literate consumers of information.

                                    Book Description

The control of reactivity to achieve specific syntheses is one of the overarching goals of organic chemistry. In the decade since the publication of the third edition, major advances have been made in the development of efficient new methods, particularly catalytic processes, and in means for control of reaction stereochemistry.
This volume assumes a level of familiarity with structural and mechanistic concepts comparable to that in the companion volume, Part A, Structures and Mechanisms. Together, the two volumes are intended to provide the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate student in chemistry with a sufficient foundation to comprehend and use the research literature in organic chemistry.

The New Revised 5th Edition will be available shortly. For details, click on the link in the right-hand column.

This fourth edition has no big difference with the new fifth release. However, the price is only half. That is a good purchase for me.

this is the textbook in chemistry dept. It is good but will be better if it have more content in organometal stuff.

Both A and B part are very good reference book for organic chemistry graduate student. It is worth to have one if you want to open your career in organic chemistry

4 out of 5 stars Strong Organic Text.......2006-05-20

I thought that the book was clear and interesting. It explained the reactions in sufficient detail for the first graduate level organic class I took.

My only complaint was that there was no answer guide. The answers are given as literature references, necessitating that you go look them up. When you are assigned 30 of his problems, that's not a trivial task, especially when some of the journals are esoteric. Also, finding the journal isn't enough, as often the journal citation has nothing to do with the problem. The "answer molecule" might just appear somewhere in that article.

And then, to add insult to injury, there are errors in the citations.

It's a great reference, but I wish that the problems in the book had more readily available answers.

5 out of 5 stars My synthesis prof. slams this text on a regular basis!.......2006-04-10

I forgot to enter the number of stars field; Amazon automatically put 5, and I cannot edit this out. The text deserves 2 or 3 stars. This text was required for my graduate course in reactions at Florida State University. I went on to take my advanced synthesis course, which requires references for all synthetic transformations. Naturally, it seemed easy to reference the Carey and Sundberg text for the more basic steps. Even there, my professor took issue with many of the topics we covered in class with reference to this text. He said he was going to put this on his list of "texts not to buy..." I respect this professor highly, therefore I take it seriously that he disapproves ot it. I wish I would have just begun with a more up to date book without the errors or misrepresentations. On the plus side, this book is well organized and has a good index. However, I wish it came in a hard back; mine is falling apart.

The relations between Frobenius manifolds and singularity theory are treated here in a rigorous yet accessible manner. For those working in singularity theory or other areas of complex geometry, this book will open the door to the study of Frobenius manifolds. This class of manifolds are now known to be relevant for the study of singularity theory, quantum cohomology, mirror symmetry, symplectic geometry and integrable systems. The first part of the book explains the theory of manifolds with a multiplication on the tangent bundle. The second presents a simplified explanation of the role of Frobenius manifolds in singularity theory along with all the necessary tools and several applications. Readers will find here a careful and sound study of the fundamental structures and results in this exciting branch of maths. This book will serve as an excellent resource for researchers and graduate students who wish to work in this area.

Saul Bellow is no longer with us. And as he is a favorite writer of mine I always wish there were more of his work for me to read. I thought I had read all the novels, and so was pleasantly surprised when I came across 'The Actual'. I read it in a single sitting and it brought great pleasure.
There are many of the usual Bellow virtues displayed in this book. His descriptive genius, his feeling for the 'things' of this world, his capacity to create interesting characters, his philosophical analysis of human relations, his sense of the complexities and contradictions of the human soul, his bright and colorful always zesty language, his sense through the telling of the story of individuals of connecting us with larger worlds meanings problems, his mixture of intellectual and business types, his vast worldliness and worldly knowledge, his great feeling for the nuances of American and modern civilization.
This tale is told by another of Bellow's middle- aged Jewish alter egos. And involves another of his love stories, this one having begun in adolescence and kept alive in imagination through many years comes to a surprising somewhat happy ending. The minor characters are also brilliantly drawn.
Perhaps the impression is mistaken but after reading Bellow I somehow feel I know more about life, understand something I did not before.
                                                A great read.

5 out of 5 stars Saul Bellow, what more is there to say?.......2006-08-02

Like other later short works, this is a little gem. Bellows account of an old and futile love is full of the kinds of regrets and second guessing that goes with old age. Well worth a read and fully satisfying.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but definitely not great.......2006-07-11

This novella, to me, was very hilly in that every 7 pages or so, Bellow would write anything between a line and a page that were perfectly brilliant, but the pages in between seemed to just go on and on about the lives of socialites and rich Chicago Jewish families.
This wasn't particularly enthralling, and I suppose that I had higher expectations for the actual prose used in the novella, but overall I felt that the story, if somewhat delayed, was satisfying and altogether not a bad read.

4 out of 5 stars Slow Start, But Stronger Finish.......2005-12-11

I am a Bellow fan and have read 12 of his 13 novels, and created an amazon guide: "A Guide to Reading Saul Bellow."

In case you are new to Bellow, his novels reflect his life, his writings, and his five marriages during his five active decades of writing. He hit his peak somewhere around the time of "Augie March" in 1953 and continued through to the Pulitzer novel "Humbolt's Gift" in 1973. He wrote from the early 1940s through to 2000. His novels are written in a narrative form, and the main character is a Jewish male, usually a writer but not always, and he is living in either in New York or Chicago. Bellow wrote approximately 13 novels plus other works. Bellow progressed a long way as a writer over the five decades. This story was written near the end of his career in 1997 and is nothing like the early novels "Dangling Man" or "The Victim" written 50 years earlier. Those were heavy slow reads. "Dangling Man" is often boring, and Bellow was in search of his writing style in that period of the 1940s. The present novel is light reading, written in an easy to follow style and is just over 100 pages, barely more than a short story. It has some merit but it is a far cry from the brilliant writing of "Herzog" or the entertaining read "Humbolt's Gift."

What was surprising for myself was the very slow start to the book. The first 20 pages or so seem a bit aimless, and it is not until the central character Harry, a retired businesman re-unites with his teenage flame Amy Wustrin, that the story takes off. They meet by chance and work to help a Chicago millionaire and to look after the burial of Amy's dead husband. As in other Bellow novels, there is a lot of self examination and many recalls by Harry of past memories of the times that Amy and Harry spent together in their early years - decades earlier as teenagers.

The slow pace picks up in the second half and it has a surprise ending. To explain the title would be to explain the plot and surprise ending. It is an interesting read but definitely a notch or two below most of his other works.

This is an interesting Bellow read, but not the first that I would recommend by Bellow. It lacks the charm, the prose, and the complexity of some of his other novels written between 1950 and 1980.

2 out of 5 stars Coming and Going.......2005-06-13

Mr. Bellow could successfully narrate a continuous yarn in an easy manner. His is an effortless tale of a man's coming of age that somewhat involves the high life of the elites. Very secretive he is about himself but with enormity of outlooks on others around him, usually with an utterly dry sense of humor. There might be some deeper meanings that could be perceived of the happenings recounted. A much artier person might understand the gist. Unfortunately, I'm not one of those on this writing. The novella is a good pastime but not one of my favorites. Yet, I enjoy the way the story flows from start to finish.
