A Realistic Approach To Animal Photograhpy.......2000-05-17
The reality of life is that few of us can spend a carear in the field in pursuit of the cover shot for National Geo., but we can go to the local zoo etc. and create presentable images that we can be proud of, and perhaps sell. This book provides some of the guidelines. Nobody can give you the skills, this will only come after you apply yourself and expose a few miles of film.
Mr. Havelin's writing flows well, it is written with enough down to earth wit to keep a sense of reality. This I find rare in photography related publishing, and I credit him and the publisher for this.
The author offers useful advice, and demonstrates with his own work, and he is not afraid to show some of his shots that didnt come out perfect, to illustrate his point.
A fresh apporocah, - Thank You Mr. Havelin.
Shooting Animals With A Camera: From Awful to Awesome.......2000-05-17
I wished I had read "Practical Manual of Captive Animal Photography" several decades ago before filling albums with numerous truly awful photos showing animals or parts of them in zoos, aquariums, gardens, and on farms. By reading Havelin's newest photography book, I discovered why many of my animal photos leave a lot to be desired and what I can try to improve. Among the many pluses of the book are understandable advice, awesome and awful photos illustrating how to photograph and how not to, a colloquial writing style, print one can read without a magnifying glass, and, this was definitely not expected, ideas for locations to visit. I especially found it valuable to learn about photographing through glass and fences. For example, on page 54 in the book are several photos of a red panda in Zoo Atlanta. The first photo could have been mine. One can see a lot of metal fencing and ask: "Where is the animal?" In the last photo is only the red panda - no cage, no fence, and no wall. I am looking forward to follow Havelin's directions: "Look for right angle to minimize glare, and the correct depth of field to remove disturbing fence elements in front of and behind the subject creature."

Losing place.......2006-06-26
Don't get me wrong, I'm nowhere near the photographer Arthur Morris is, but the emerging world of digital photography has taken the bloom off this rose. This title needs updating for the new world. This book focuses mainly on work done with full-frame film cameras (where Morris earned his reputation), and much of what's here would apply to full-frame digital SLRs. Problem is, most of us can't afford them, and we're forced to using APS-C, smaller-frame cameras. The most significant thing there is that the images delivered to the sensors are the central portion of the full-frame sensor, so a lens connected to the camera "acts like" it has a longer focal length. This impacts things like composition and lens selection, and some detail from the master would have been insightful.
I would like to have seen a more thorough discussion of the use use of extension tubes in front of long lenses (Morris uses them). I am inclined to compare this book less favorably with anything by John Shaw, who very clearly and amusingly gets us into the nitty-gritty details of what AND why we do things a certain way.
I was also a little surprised at the quality of the photographs. Morris is a fine photographer, and the book is chock full of his finest work - but the reproduction of them leaves a lot to be desired. This is not a knock on Morris, but this title is a decided step down from Amphoto photography guides.
I Shoot A Lot More Birds That I Used To.......2006-05-02
I bought this book on a whim, thinking, well I kind of like taking pictures of birds, but they are so hard to get. Then I read this book and learned that with the right techniques and preparation I could take great bird pictures. Birds are now my second favorite subject right after flowers. The author is really an inspiration and his photos are wonderful. Even if you don't focus solely on bird photography, this is a great book and it is fun to read. Plus I learned of the hot-spots in North America for bird photography, which I will be visiting soon.
Excellent guide to bird photography.......2006-03-09
I recently got interested in birding and photographing them to document my observations. This book provides you all the practical information you need to become an excellent bird photographer. The only thing missing is that there is nothing about using the digital camera because this was published before the digital revolution. Author also spends a lot of time discussing the shortcomings of some of the film cameras and lenses. These have pretty much been addressed by the more modern cameras and lenses. Photographs are outstanding. A book worth having.
The Best Bird Photo Book You Could Find!.......2006-03-04
Wow this book kept my attention. I read it in one sitting. I re-read it the next day. The photos are amazing and Mr. Morris is very generous with his descriptions, information, location advice and more.
It's a bit dated, doesn't cover digital and mentions equipment generally no longer available, but the instruction on exposure is as good as I have seen.
Mr. Morris also talks at length about exposure compensation which I found very helpful.
Mr. Morris has a well-deserved reputation as America's number one bird photographer and his background as a teacher comes in handy here. Even if you're not into bird photography, check this book out. Anyone can learn from The Art of Bird Photography.
Out of Date Information.......2005-11-14
This book points out such valuable information as: use a long lens (like the authors $9,000 glass,) and get close. Hey, I never would have thought of that! The book was written in 1997 and deals exclusively with 35mm film media. A large portion of the book is devoted to film types and uses, and exposure and development techniques. Virtually no one, including Authur Morris, uses film anymore. Additionally, the author makes many equipment recommendations for equipment that is no longer even produced. This might have been a valuable publication, when it was written, 10 years ago, but it is sadly out of date now.

My first step on astrophotography.......2001-02-27
For the very beginner in astrophotography( like me) it is all you need( at least for a while).Dickinson and Newton used a clear text adding their expereance. The book begins talking about the universe, then goes to the basic camera on tripod( comets, moon and Earth shine, star trails, etc). To follow the Earth's movment(for those 10 minutes exposures), I learned and built my on Star Tracker - It is very precise and useful because I could find the south celestial pole in my first try as I learned from page 70. As I still didn't buy my own "good telescope", I am not the best person to say about Part 3: Probing Deeper- through the telescope; but it covers all the inicial steps, adaptation, films and filters for lunar /solar photos. The last part tell us how to use the CCD tecnology:choosing a CCD camera, how to color the image and to process it.For the one who want more detail on digital imaging, this is not your book. Bad points are: it does not teach you where(all) the "subjects" are ,missing on CCD shoftware; almost anything on Southern emisfere sky. Good point: a lot of amateurs photos, showing that you can do it. Finally, this is a very good inicial book FOR THE BEGINNER ASTROPHOTOGRAPHER.
Practical "real-world" advice and great pictures.......1999-10-23
I really like everything about this book. It offers great, practical advice on learning how to take "astro"photos. Many beautiful pictures also. I am currently building my own camera mount based on guidelines in book. Anyone interested in astronomy and/or photography should get it!
Typo.......1999-09-03
The book is great. Terry and Jack did a wonderful job. By the way I am on page 64 with the camera tracker. I noticed a typo on this web page under table of contents. You have Sides versus prints and should be SLIDES verses prints.

This Is A Coffee Table Book Not An Astrophotography Manual........1999-05-24
The photograghs of the deep sky objects in this book are as amazing as they are gorgeous. Especially, when one relalizes that the photos were done by "amateur" astronomers. But this is NOT a practical guide to astrophotography. This is a coffee table book which is why it is so deeply discounted.
FANTASTIC, IS THE BEST WAY TO SUM IT UP.......1999-03-05
NEVER BEFORE HAVE I SEEN A BOOK SO WELL THOUGHT THRU AND SO WELL WRITTEN MR DICKINSON HAS SHOWN US AGAIN HOW WELL HE WRITES. I RECIEVED THIS BOOK AS A CHRISTMAS GIFT FROM MY PARENTS, AND I LOVE IT. IT SHOWS WONDERFUL DIAGRAMS AND EVERYTHING YOU WOULD NEED TO KNOW. THANK YOU GEOFF NASH

A Great Book by a Great Guy.......2006-12-06
After being a student of Bob Sobie's for just under two years, I quickly realized his love for bicycling and his love for the Elroy Sparta Trail. Since graduating from the college he teaches at (soon to retire, good luck Bob!) I myself began to take an interest in cycling. I figured where better to take a vacation then the Elroy Sparta Trial.
I bought this book to get myself familiar with the paths and towns that make up the trail. The book was wonderfully written and his enjoyment of the trails really shines through. He gives plenty of information on the trails, including what the expect to see on the way. The book also includes a lot of information on where to stay, eat, and other attractions to enjoy on your visit to these beautiful trails. If you plan on visiting these trails, this book is a must!
One of the Best Bike Books Available.......2002-02-19
As one of the Friday Riders listed in this book, I have known and ridden with Bob Sobie, the author of the Elroy Sparta Trail Guidebook, for a number of years. As a matter of fact it was my Bachelor bike ride that Bob mentions in the book. As an author and a psychologist I believe I have a unique perspective of Bob and the words he wrote in this book. If the famous analyst C.G. Jung were to meet Bob he would probably call him a "sensing" person. Let me tell you why I believe that's important for an author of a guidebook. Being a sensing person Bob writes what he gets through his senses. He writes about what sights you will see. He describes the sounds you'll hear. He includes how much the trail will incline or decline. He even includes what you should expect from sleeping and eating at various places along the trail. Though his own passion about the trail definitely does leak out, he leaves whether you ride or how much you ride up to you, as he does with all the other attractions in the area.

good orientation.......2004-07-26
I've been looking around for a good introduction to bioinformatics software for some months now. I have only read 37 pages, but that was worth the purchase price and I am enthusiastic about reading on. Hall does a very nice job of explaining the uses of Blast and ClustalX, differentiating among the various versions and showing how protein analysis differs from DNA analysis. (His focus is proteins.) He takes you step by step through an analysis and explains the information available on the screen at each step. He tells you how to manage the resulting input and results files, and he even explains choices of penalties for gaps. All very clear.
Step-by-step instruction with downloadable input data files.......2004-01-21
What I liked about this slim book is that, as in Chapter 1, it first provides you with data files with which you can build phylogenetic trees, then guides you through step by step. Also, I liked its concise overview about phylogenetics.
However, Chapter 2 does not come with such data files. It only provides you with templates. Why?
Also what you should be aware before ordering this book is that the explanations on this book assume that you;
(1) have a copy of PAUP (which is not a free software), and;
(2) are running PAUP on Mac OS.
So, if you are running PAUP on Windows/UNIX and do not have any access to Mac, you probably don't want to buy this book. PAUP manual should better serve you.
MrBayes and Paup* manual.......2003-09-28
I picked up this book because I was trying to learn MrBayes on my own with little success. With new versions of MrBayes, this book is already out of date and I encountered some frustration with my Nexus code being wrong, but between the help function, a lot of trial and error, and Hall's book I managed to successfully analyze my data using Bayesian analysis! I highly recommend it for the "cookbook" appeal-- software like PAUP and MrBayes can be difficult to learn on your own, and it's nice to have someone explain it step by step. I would have liked some instruction on saturation curves, but the book is fairly complete otherwise. MacClade is not mentioned, probably because it is more user-friendly than the programs included. PTME has been criticized for some incorrect statements in the book regarding theory, but I would expect students to use this book for practice more than theory. Overall, a great little manual to have on the shelf.

The authors have provided a unique and authoritative work with their amalgamation of expertise in population genetics, the laws of evidence and molecular biology.
DNA Profiling provides a potent new tool in criminal investigatins whereby genetic material in tissue residues is analyzed to provide direct identification of an individual. This book serves as a comprehensive and definitive reference source for all aspects of DNA profiling and it clearly describes the underlying principles, as well as the analytical procedures, in language that can be understood by the non-scientist. It considers the scientific aspects and legal implications of obtaining tissue samples and the interpretive problems that can be encountered with the results, with the emphasis on the proper use of evidence based on DNA profiling.

From popular artist Mary Engelbreit (whose work graces greeting cards, calendars, books, and home decorations, among others) comes a beautiful little book about collecting. "No matter what drives us," she says, "few are immune to the urge to collect." Engelbreit establishes the beginning of a collection at three pieces--and you've usually purchased the adorable, unique items before even realizing you've started a collection. But how do you know what to collect and, once you've gotten an impressive little pile, how do you arrange them?
In Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion: Collections, Engelbreit explains how to recognize collectibles, where to find them, and then what to do with them once you get home. She reminds us that "popularity is a factor; collectibles go in and out of vogue and their prices skyrocket accordingly." So if you started buying stray pieces of Bakelite or old medicine bottles a few years ago, you may have amassed a valuable assortment. Engelbreit advises buying what you "REALLY like," not just items you think may increase in price--after all, you have to live with this stuff.
The book covers some of the more sought-after collectibles: clocks, books, pottery, stuffed animals, souvenirs, maritime items, toys, and paper/labels. In each section are sumptuous photographs of how to creatively display your treasures in your home. The arrangements are lovely, but not overly ornate, inspiring those of us without interior decorators to try a hand at it ourselves. Whether you collect teddy bear cookie jars or jeweled hat pins, Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion: Collections not only encourages the collecting bug, but also ensures your collection doesn't end up in a box under the bed. --Dana Van Nest

Small book packed with pretty pictures.......2007-06-28
This book is part of a series that Mary Engelbreit issued a few years ago. The book series is comprised of these nifty little books filled with great ideas, depending on the topic. The photos in this book are absolutely amazing, just as all of M.E.'s books have wonderful photos. Very inspirational.
This particular book, though, from Mary's series is LESS "how to" and more of a picture book. Thus, I wish she had included more photos of people's collections.
wish it were larger.......2004-08-23
This is a cute, fun, little book (check the dimensions before ordering so that you aren't disappointed). For the list price it should have been twice the size, but at $6 it's an excellent buy. I love some of the collections, but too many photos are close-ups and you can't see how they are displayed. I prefer Better Homes and Gardens "Collector's Style" which has some of the same attitude, but more bang for the buck.
Collectors Will Love This Book!!.......2001-08-12
If you're like me and love to collect, this book is for you. The pictures are luscious and it's loaded with great information. It brought back so many memories of my childhood (things I kept and things I wish I had kept). It also gave me great ideas on new collections. I settled in on a rainy afternoon to browse the book and before I knew it, it was over, much to my dismay!! I only hope Mary plans a sequel - with many more collections!
Not really what I was hoping for..........2001-01-24
On the plus side, Collections does feature lots of lovely photos of pretty things. Sadly, it didn't really give me what I wanted, which was ideas on displaying diverse collections. Most of the photos either show only one of an item (this is a collection?) or just plunk the items down on a shelf (thank you, I could think of that myself.) The book wastes lots of space on collecting tips (price suggestions/figuring out the age or maker of a piece/etc.) which aren't very helpful -- too detailed and boring for someone who doesn't collect that particular item; not nearly detailed enough for someone who does.
Buy the book for the pictures, but don't expect too much...
A treasure chest of nick nacks.......2000-09-05
What simple pleasures we seem to find in collecting. To gaze through the pictures and pages in this book, you may find bits and pieces of items you enjoy saving. Unfotunately, you may also stumble upon a new item that you just have to have. There is always room for just one more little lovely isn't there?
Mary Engelbreit has added a dandy to this series of books on decorating your home. If you love this book, pick up her PLATES and PAINT books too!
