An absolutely gorgeous book-I cannot imagine why it has gone out of print! It is a great resource for artists and needlecrafters, as well as full of interesting information.
Aa captivating Science book.......2000-05-28
As a homeschooling mom I am always on the look-out for captivating books. This book is hand printed and ilustrated extensively in Maryjo's delicate watercolors. A "living book" that will enhance your scientific look at seeds, flowers, leaves, trees, and fruit. Her informative articles merge with her botanical illustrations like a Naturalists nature notebook. Perfect compliment to Handbook of Nature Study, by Anna Comstock and Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady, by Edith Holden. Beneficial to all ages.

Useful travel companion.......2000-08-01
We have travelled through Sri Lanka this spring. The guidebook proved to be very accurate and useful in organizing our trip and in assisting us for the different visits. Its practical tips are very true and the historical background is concentrated, without flooding you with too much information. I can highly recommend the guidebook.

Book Description
Migration and colonization are major forces affecting the frequency, spatial pattern and spread of genes in human populations. Here, Alan Fix reviews theories of migration developed by biologists and social scientists and surveys patterns of migration in a diverse sample of human populations. Using these empirical studies, he evaluates models of migration developed by population geneticists and explores more realistic models using computer simulation. He then shows the relevance of studies of migration as a microevolutionary process to the understanding of longer term global patterns of human diversification, by examining the spread of anatomically modern Homo sapiens, the demic diffusion of agriculture in Europe, and the origins of human diversity in the Malayan Peninsula. By focusing on migration as a process rather than on its genetic consequences, the book provides a bridge between biological and social science studies of migration, genetic microevolutionary theory, and longer term human evolution.

I have been there and my take is sorta like Melville's...a bucket load of cinders but I see more in the ecology than he was seeing. The complete non-interest the animals and birds have in humans.Very interesting to read what was said in Melville's days and what we think of the islands now. The Galapagos was a place to exploit then and now it is an unspoiled group of islands to savor. Well worth the read...a short 65 pages.
